2 332 STORE CATTLE & STIRKS 10AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford & Ian Caunter Steers to 1325 Heifers to 1190 The promise of wetter weather and a better quality entry of store cattle saw a definite uplift in the trade on Friday with a top of 1325 for a pair of tremendous Devon cross steers (27m) from Dr Roger Mugford of Diptford. Further top quality sorts from Cyril Emmett of Aylesbeare soared to 1310 for a solitary Hereford steer (29m) with others with similar comments rising to 1240 and Blue s (24m) seeing 1230 again for Cyril. An eye catching Angus steer (33m) fetched 1130 for David & Justine Colton, Princetown whilst younger (18m) Simmental bullocks from the Stacey family of Summerleaze, Looe ran to 1100 and More super 18 month old sorts from Geoff & Nicki Arscott saw a trio of Charolais steers to 1050 followed by later born Charolais (14m) selling at 1005 for Michael Vooght of Hennock. More decent spring 2017 born steers saw a pair of cracking Limousin s from Dennis Turner, Wottor ease to 990 and muscled sorts of the same breed (at only 11m) sell well at 935 for Steve & Susan Sallis of Jacobstowe. The heifer section was headed by David & Justine Colton with an aged Angus which sold at A pen of four strong Hereford females (29m) hit 1145 for Cyril Emmett, with a trio of well covered Devon cross heifers getting 1080 apiece for Roger Mugford. A Simmental heifer (22m) looked good money at 1040 for Martin Chatfield of Cheriton Bishop with Limousins (26m) drawing 995 for David & Justine Colton again. Younger Simmentals (17m) rose to 995 for the Stacey Family whilst a striking bunch of nine young (14m) Limousin heifers sold at 810 a life for William Bromell of Chagford. Again, another summer entry of stirks and suckled calves met with a good audience of buyers. Paul Pincombe of Lapford showed smart Charolais cross steers and heifers with the best of the steers reaching 795 (10m), whilst others realised 790 and 760. Blues from CR & JA Bishop of Feniton topped at 650 (8m), MR Daw of Ugborough achieved 620 for Limousin cross steers, whilst Black and white steers from Heather Bond and Daughters of Bovey Tracey attained 490. A good run of Blue steers from Lewis Farms Ltd, Shirwell topped at 470 whilst younger bulls from Bowden Farm Partnership Ltd of Buckfastleigh saw Blue s achieve 495. Heifers topped at 610 for Paul Pincombe on two occasions, whilst Blue heifers (8m) from CR & JA Bishop attained CALVES AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis & Ian Caunter STIRKS & SUCKLED CALVES 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter CALVES am Auctioneer: - Mark Davis Ian Caunter CALVES Bulls Heifers Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE A massive entry of calves sold to a slightly improved British Blue trade for the better end but still the second quality continues to be hard work. Top of the day was 470 Limousin for a smart weaned Limousin bull from Messrs KH Simmental Alsopp & Partners of Cadeleigh who sold others to Aberdeen Angus Young calves to 380 for a British Blue from Messrs Higgin of Totnes with others to 365 (x2) for Hereford Messrs Townlake Farms and Mr P Short of Alston, Devon & 348 for Gorwyn Pitts of Crediton, 340 for Holstein / Friesian Martin & Liz Bennett of Broadhembury, 325 for Roger & SAM Parris of Stockland and 320 & 315 Ayrshires for Nick & Jane Bond of Axminster. Simmental bulls topped at 278 for Martin & Liz Bennett who sold others to 245 with an Aberdeen Angus bull at the same money with others to 232 for Messrs Higgin. Heifers topped at 395 (x3) for three outstanding weaned Limousin heifers from Messrs KH Alsopp & Partners. Young calves to 275 for Nick & Jane Bond who sold others to 250. Friesians to 110 for Steve Loud of Colyton with others to 75 for Gorwyn Pitts. 49 DAIRY 11AM Auctioneer: Mark Davis & Mark Bromell A good entry sold to a decent trade when a large portion of the entry was older crossbred cows. Top of the day was 1700 for a smart heifer from the Blackrose family Ashlea Luci Rose by Morningview Lucifer from Martin & Di Webber of Drewsteignton who sold another milky heifer at Messrs JJ Palfrey & Co of Dartmouth sold a smart three year old heifer giving 35kgs at 1550 and a sweet heifer from Andrew Bonner of Umberleigh sold at An Ayrshire heifer sold at 1200 for David Sayer of Bridgwater. Cows sold to 1180 & 1100 with several Jersey x 4th & 5th calvers selling between from Mr GCB Davis of Tiverton. A consignment of grazing type dry cows due in September from Messrs Yarmleigh Farm of Crediton sold very well to 980 with several others to 900. In-calf heifers to 1120 & 1100 for Kevin Waldon & Partners of Umberleigh and a consignment of Spring calving Holsteins from Mynthurst Farms Ltd of West Sussex sold to a better than expected trade topping at 850.

3 1021 SHEEP 10.30AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer STORE LAMBS Another big but decent entry of stores saw the general run of lambs a touch dearer reaching 74 & 69 for MM Wedlake of Black Dog with forward Dorset sorts. Others to 70 & 67 for fresh Texel crosses MJ & G Broom of Cotleigh and 70 also for Charollais sired lambs from MS & JS Southwood of Black Dog whilst both Dave Phillips of South Chard and D McCluskey of Lurley made 69 of their Charollais sired lambs. Plenty of other big framed lambs selling from 65 to whilst menium lambs traded from 52 to 62 depending on breed/quality and a general shortage of small lambs, which traded well and usually over 48, helped lift the average to GRAZING EWES Grazers to 62 for a wether from Nicky Cleave of Bratton Fleming whilst best of the rest real lean grazing sorts reached 40 for MM Wedlake. 32 BREEDING EWES & RAMS A handful of breeding rams saw FM Suffolks sell to 130 (x2) for Robert Partridge of Teignmouth whilst lean Suffolk x FM ewes sold at 65 for Sam Friend of Coryton. 44 PEDIGREE DEVON & CORNWALL LONGWOOLS The annual sale of Devon & Cornwall Longwools was well attended and included a few fresh faces looking to enter the breed, as well as a few members looking to expand their flocks. The females met with a blistering trade with Geoff & Liz Hosegood of East Worlington selling their best pen of four shearlings at 380gns followed by a pair at 340gns and a pen of five at 200gns, the two highest priced bunches are off to establish a new flock with C Piper in Yarnscombe. These were followed closely by John & Sue Tancock of Callington who had five at 320gns and five at 200gns whilst Drake Bros of North Tawton made 290gns of their pair and R Saunders & Son of Copplestone sold nice ewe lambs well at 140gns. Champion Ram sold at 1400gns again for John & Sue Tancock to establish a new flock with L Smith and family of Slapton, as others sold at 500gns for Geoff & Liz Hosegood, 400gns for David Snell of Kentisbeare and 380gns for Graham & Daphne Tucker of Launceston. More shearlings changing hands at 350gns for Melvyn Britton of Kentisbeare and 300gns for both Drake Bros and JA Darke Ltd of Chillington whilst best of the older rams saw a 4T from Penny Coulter Smith of Launceston achieve 250gns. 283 PIGS 10.15AM Auctioneer: James Morrish CULL SOWS A massive entry of cull sows, easily the biggest entry in any livestock market in the UK this week sold to a slightly easier trade with the top of the day being 159 for Chris Down with others at 143, 142, 140, & 133 from the same farm. David Salvage of Launceston sold a good run of white sows topping at 120 and the best for Andrew Freemantle hit 109 with Richard Knox at 115. Top ten sows of the day averaged PRIME & STORE PIGS Big numbers out today with the best reaching 124 for heavy weights in from Manor Farms, Budleigh. Messrs Turner of Coombe Martin saw their 94kg quality white cross prime pigs hit 112 (x10) with Phil Dyer of Tipton Cross close up at 109. It was nice to see Robert Ovenell selling at Exeter again and hitting 106 with Messrs Clarke of Bodmin selling their pen of seven at 100. A good entry of store pigs saw Martin Hodges top the day for the third sale running hitting 50 for six young white weaners going off to their new home in St Just near Penzance. John Sheaves of Ottery St Mary also did well with his first pen of five reaching 42 and his second pen of Saddlebacks (six weeks) at 36. * Our next Pig Sale will be on Friday 24 th August * Please contact James Morrish or with your entries.
