2 375 STORE CATTLE & STIRKS 10AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Steers to 1390 Heifers to 1285 Excellent numbers of cattle forward on Friday, again mostly drawn by the very strong trade we have been witnessing for all types of late. Charolais steers from Phil & Peggie Keast, North Tawton topped the sale with four well grown sorts (23m) rising to a very creditable 1390 apiece, a trio of smashing Blue steers (23m) off the same farm sold well at 1240 ahead but were eclipsed by their single Charolais heifer (22m) which saw A Blue heifer (23m) again from Phil & Peggy Keast looked a cracking price at Next in line was a bunch of four grand South Devon steers (22m) from John & Edward Warne of East Allington which flew to 1310 a life with other groups to 1250 and Salers bullocks (22m) rose to 1285 (x6) for R & B Boundy of Winkleigh. Brian Vallance, Bickington sold a meaty Hereford steers (22m) to a high of 1260 with his smart Limousin steers & heifers (20m) reaching 1215 and 1240 respectively. Further quality Limousin bred cattle (19m) looked just a fair price at 1180 for steers and 1110 for Peter Richards & family of Highampton. Devon steers (22m) ran to 1170 (x4) for John Searle of Crediton whilst a big bunch of seven Angus bred bullocks drew 1155 apiece for Chris Poad of Saltash. Chris also sold a further eye catching pen of nine Blue steers (23m) at 1135 each. Young steers peaked at 1060 for a super Charolais steer (just 11m) for Sandy & James Harvey of Holbeton also highest priced dairy bred steers fetched 1035 for a bunch of four Swedish Red s (24m) from David Horton & family of Roborough, Plymouth. A few high priced store heifers having already been mentioned but all were topped by a mighty 1285 for a strong Friesian from Crouchlands Farm, East Sussex. Others of note included Devon s (24m) from John Searle at 1020 and South Devons at 1000 for David Gardener of Holne. Four Young (11m) Limousin heifers from Donald & Bill Tonkin of Cheriton Fitzpaine looks a real price at 900 a head. A small run of outwintered South Devon cross Organic store cattle from John Andrews, Wembury created great interest and produced some outstanding returns with steers (22m) to an incredible high of 1330 and heifers of a similar age seeing Cows with calves at foot rose to 1220 for a Limousin with her Angus steer (1m) from Michael Wonnacott of South Zeal. 105 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter A tight entry of just over 100 stirks and suckled calves met a solid trade throughout. Sandy & James Harvey of Holberton showing a wonderful run of well-presented suckled calves with the best of the Angus steers hitting 835 (10m), whilst Charolais crosses from the same vendor achieved 830 (11m). Brian Chattey down from Cullompton presented a nice run of Hereford calves with the best (12m) achieving 800, Malcolm Harris up from Slapton realised 790 for Charolais cross steers (9m) with others to 730. Hatherley & Rendle of Plymouth attained 760 from Limousin cross steers (8m), with others of a similar age hitting 745 & 740. South Devon steers from Paul Bowden of Ashburton achieved 730 with others to 630, whilst Bruce Ellett attained 645 for Sussex crosses. Heifers met good demand topping at 735 (x2) for cracking Charolais crosses from Sandy & James Harvey, with others a little younger hitting 670. Messrs Hatherley & Rendle achieved 660 for Limousin cross heifers (10m), whilst Hereford heifers from Brian Chattey realised 650. Top of the day was 335 for a smart Simmental bull from Martin & Liz Bennett of Broadhembury who sold others to 300 and a British Blue bull at 332. Other Blues to 290 for Mike Chugg of Braunton. Young Hereford bulls to 265 for Derek Burrough of Yarcombe. Heifer calves topped at 265 for a British Blue from Chris & Connie Creeper of Axminster with others to 250 for Mike Chugg and Limousin heifers sold to 248 for Martin & Liz Bennett. Friesians topped at 125 for David & Sherrie Turner of Torrington with others to 122 (x3) for Stuart Dagworthy of Woodbury Salterton. Shorthorn bulls to 70 for Roy Collins of Honiton. 3 Loose housed Cows a flying trade to 2000gns! The dispersal of the loose housed herd of 180 Holsteins which travelled to Exeter Livestock Centre from West Sussex sold to a packed ringside and saw a flying trade! The sale saw great interest and this quality herd which included 90 daughters of the mighty Picston Shottle topped at 2000gns for a fourth calver by Askew Reece which was due in August with her fifth. The Autumn calvers were certainly in big demand and saw others to 1900gns, 1850gns and 1800gns which was achieved four times. Fresh milk sold to 1750gns for a Shottle second calver with others to 1700gns twice. Dry cows topped at 1720gns for a third calver by Shottle due in April with others to 1680gns, 1600gns & 1500gns. A handful of incalf heifers due in the Autumn sold to a top of 1250gns whilst eleven bulling heifers topped at 900gns (x4) with others to 870gns (x2). The eight baby heifer calves sold to flying trade topping at 450gns with others to 400gns & 350gns for twothree week old calves! The sale was a huge success a produced the following very creditable averages. 132 In Milk & Dry Cows & Heifers ¾ d, high cc & old Cows In Calf Heifers Bulling Heifers Heifer Calves head 1278 per life 180 DAIRY 11AM Auctioneer: Mark Davis & Mark Bromell 2546 SHEEP 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer ORPHAN LAMBS A colossal entry of 126 orphan lambs were, as expected, a steady but not altogether disastrous trade. Best lambs reached 30 for Colin Smallacombe of Bow with a stronger lambs whilst younger rearing lambs sold at 23 for Martin Palfrey of Crediton, 22 (x3) for Richard Smaridge of East Allington and 22 (x2) for Messrs Lucas & Ridge of Chulmleigh as neighbouring farmers Messrs Parsonage Farms sold their usual nice sorts to 21 (x3) & 20 (x3). Majority of lambs 8 to 15 with a handful of smaller sorts less than that to give an average of throughout STORE & EWE HOGGS Store hogg trade was on fire with yet more national buyers looking to the Westcountry to source quality stores in abundance. Two pens of stores reached the heights of 99, firstly for Rosie Fishleigh of Sourton who sold a second pen at 93 and also for a double pen from Phillip Hosking of Modbury. Keith Vincent travelled up from Grampound to see a top of 96 & 90 for the best of his run as P Reynolds of Bratton Fleming reached 94.50, Colin Friend of Lydford made and both Nigel Baverstock of Doddiscombsleigh and Brembridge Farm of East Village achieved 90 of their best. Plenty of others 84 to with mediums trading upwards of 70 to give an overall average for the 1675 sold of 74! Two consignments of empty breeding ewe hoggs sold to & for Suffolk crosses from Tamar Farms of Lamerton who also had continental crosses at 96 & 94 (x2) and Mark Kimber of Merton sold Dorset Mules to GRAZING EWES Grazers sold to 80 for DM Kirst of North Tawton, for David & Michelle Wootton of Bovey Tracey and 68 for M Randall of Chulmleigh. 239 EWES & 359 LAMBS (598 LIVES) The largest entry of couples so far this season were of a noticeably better quality and therefore sold to a much stronger trade all round, in general far exceeding vendor expectations. A genuine consignment of flock aged Dorset ewes with November/December born lambs topped the trade for Brian Trant of Dittisham with his doubles reaching 235 & 230 ( & 76.66/life), a pen of 6 ewes with 11 lambs making 228 ( 80.47/life) and a pen of singles achieving 148 ( 74/life). Sam Wright of Chittlehamholt sold his best older ewe doubles at 200 & 192, Patrick Parish of Cullompton sold 11 full/broke Suffolk cross doubles at 190, Helen Fuller of Simonsbath sold FM Dorset doubles at 190 and Gareth Hutchings of Launceston sold his 6T/FM doubles at 190, 188 & 185. Singles sold to 152 for the first lot to be sold being a pen of Dorset mule shearlings from DL Rigby of Ottery St Mary and then again a few lots later for similar aged continentals from David & Michelle Wootton. The better end singles are generally 130 to 145 whilst doubles of the same ilk are 175 to 188, medium sorts around the per life whilst a few plainer of staler sorts are 40 to 54/life. Averages are worth talking about again with outfits levelling at and per life of
