Quality in short supply, several steers too heavy and many cattle not sufficiently finished. Buyers report very slow sales due to a shortage of cash amongst the buying public, which combined to return a trade at lower levels than seen of late, except for the best butchers heifers. Top was 207.5ppk for a very smart Charolais heifer from Mr JR, Mrs RA & Mr RD Stanbury, Knowstone who sold others similar at and 190.5ppk. Other best heifers 194ppk, Limousin, Mr RJ, Mrs HA & Mr MR Popham, Highbridge; 191.5ppk, Stabilizer, Mr JPT & Mrs BM Scott, Taunton and 191.5ppk again for a Blue from Mr SER Hunt, Kilve. Steers topped at 190ppk for a quality Limousin from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe &, Ottery St Mary, who sold others at 188 and 183ppk. A superb red Limousin at 189.5ppk from Mr MJ Chilcott and good red Limousins from Mr RJ, Mrs HA & Mr MR Popham again at 188 and 187ppk. Steers over 700kg easier than of late. Top sucklers were 117.5ppk twice for a smart Devon from Mr JR, Mrs RA & Mr RD Stanbury and a broad Blue from Mr TA Wilkins &, Martock. Limousin cows rose to 116.5ppk from Mr MJ Britton, Tiverton and a further Devon from the Stanbury family met a call of 115.5ppk. Better cows 110ppk plus. SUCKLERS sold to 1, for the Blue from Mr TA Wilkins &. DAIRY breeds also peaked at the day s top price of 117.5ppk for a well fleshed young Holstein (42m) from Mr CG & Mrs JM Heard, Umberleigh, who sold other well fleshed older black and whites at 111 and 109.5ppk.
