2 519 STORE CATTLE AND STIRKS 10AM Auctioneers: Simon Alford Alan Webber Steers to 1200 Heifers to 1155 Young Stock Bulls 1270 Super trade on the back of a falling deadweight price The recent more spring-like weather brought forward the largest number of store cattle so far this year for the 4th Anniversary Heart of Devon Sale which included a tremendous entry of top quality continentals entered into the 2nd Special Spring Breed Sale. The store cattle trade continues to belie the current depressed deadweight price as virtually all classes of stock remain in good demand with outliers particularly so. Not surprisingly the true meat cattle no dearer than of late reflecting the difficulties currently being experienced with the end product. An exceptional entry of nine Limousin steers from Peter Hooper of Bovey Tracey saw his best pair of 23 month bullocks rise to 1200 apiece, while others of a similar ages from the same consignor sold readily at 1200 again, 1160 (x2), 1120 (x2) and 1100 (x2). Peter was also awarded 2nd prize for his steers that made A group of 3 Blonde steers averaging 23 months, part of an entry of nine from Keith & Hilary Harvey also of Bovey Tracey secured the top steer prize on their way to making Another good run of cattle from Ron Moon of Broadclyst, sadly his last as he is retiring, sold exceptionally well with his 21 month Limousin steers realising 1170 (x2) also 1030 while his Limousin heifers of the same age made 1025 (x2) winning him 1st prize in the female category. 17 month Limousin heifers off the same farm to 950. Edward & George Pollard of North Bovey presented their usual top quality bullocks in the month range that sold readily at 1195 (x2), 1165 (x4), 1140 (x3) etc. Charolais steers at 23 months from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock rose to 1195 with others to Heifers from the same consignors to 995, 960 etc. A strong entry of 12 Stabilisers from Bryan & Martyn Hingston of Marldon saw 22 month steers to 1125 (x5) also 1075 (x3). Heifers of the same breed to 980, other prices worthy of note saw five matching 19 month British Blue steers for EH Bragg & Son of Clyst St George make 1085 apiece and 20 month South Devons to 1060 for Keith Clapp of Moretonhampstead. Best Aberdeen Angus steers at 23 months to 1085 (x2) for Graham Tancock of Broadclyst, also 900 (x4) for Russell Retter of Cotleigh who also had Herefords to 990. The younger the cattle, the dearer they seemed to be, with Carolyn Runnalls ofn Liverton leading the way with her yearling Limousin steers racing to 960, other 12 month steers to 890 and 860 for Michael Ayre of Thorverton. A smart entry of 15 Simmental cattle at months from Jeremy Brown of Poltimore saw groups of steers make 880 (x4), 870 (x5), 860 (x3) and heifers to 765 (x3). Exceptional 24 month Limousin heifers from Brian Vallance of Bickington made top female price of 1155 with others to 1025 while smart 17/19 month cattle of the same breed in the 850 to 950 bracket. An eye-catching pair of 21 month Blonde heifers from Mary Curtis of Cadeleigh were awarded 2nd prize females before reaching 810 apiece. Charolais heifers to 1045 for Adrian Bowden of Drewsteignton. Pedigree Limousin yearling bulls from Anne Quiney & Simon Spears of Moretonhampstead sold to a top of 1270, others to 1110 and purebreds to 990. Second Spring Show and Sale of continental and continental cross store cattle results Many thanks to the judge Mr David Goss Best pen of steers 1 st Keith & Hilary Harvey, Bovey Tracey (Blondes 25m) to R Dare 2 nd - Peter Hooper, Bovey Tracey (Lims 21/24m) to M Julyan Best pen of heifers 1 st R Moon, Broadclyst (Lims 21m) to R May 2 nd - Mary Curtis, Cadeleigh (Blondes 21m) to M May 159 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS 11.30AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Steers to 905 Heifers to 840 Our 4th Anniversary Heart of Devon show and sale attracted some terrific younger cattle which sold to a high of 905 given for a quality muscled Blue steer (12m) from Louise Moorhouse of Crockernwell who also sold a superb Limousin heifer for 840. Eye catching Limousin steers (8m) from Nigel Baverstock of Doddiscombsleigh saw 750 for a pair and 710 for a single Charolais bullock (10m) whilst another smart Limousin steer (11m) rose to 720 for Mike Fitzpatrick of Torquay. John May of East Village sold a cracking Simmental steer (12m) for 700 also Limousin yearlings to 680 for John Towill of Shaldon. Paul Stoneman brought a fine run of Angus stirks up from Stokeinteignhead and sold young steers to 670 for a bunch of four whilst a single Blue steer (9m) fetched 635 for Michael and Janet Folland of Winkleigh. Another heifer from Louise Moorhouse saw a neat Blue (12m) get 570 whilst Limousin females from Nigel Baverstock and Malcolm Harris of Slapton all made th Anniversary Heart of Devon stirks and suckled calves show results Many thanks to the judges Michael & Mandy Tooze Best pen of steers Nigel Baverstock, Doddiscombsleigh (Limousin) to SJ Blake Best pen of heifers Louise Moorhouse, Crockernwell (Limousin) to AF Cook

3 123 CALVES AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis and Ian Caunter Another large entry of calves sold to a strong trade topping at 375 for a Limousin Bull from Mike CALVES am Hooper of Spreyton. Other Limousin Bulls sold to CALVES Bulls Heifers 350 & 300 for Chris Creeper of Axminster. Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE Simmental Bulls topped at 370 for Malcolm & Kay Pring of Broadclyst who sold others to 340 and British Blue other Simmentals sold to 360 for Andrew Poole Simmental of Crediton. British Blue bulls topped at 322 for Limousin James Baker of Aylesbeare. Only average quality Charolais native bulls forward which saw plenty between topped by Mark Burrough of Hereford Axminster with other Aberdeen Angus bulls from Blonde Russell Risdon of Camelford to 220 (x3). Heifers Aberdeen Angus topped at 302 for a smart young British Blue heifer from John Cowley of Ashwater with other Holstein / Friesian Blue heifers to 375 for Chris Creeper, 270 for Messrs RE, L & PR Herniman of Torrington and Shorthorn for Messrs J Cornish & Sons of Westleigh. A young Hereford Heifer saw the trade of the day selling at 295! Only a handful of Friesians forward with no real quality saw the best to 60 for David Snell of Cullompton. Another large entry of Dairy for our monthly sale saw a mixed trade for the Black & Whites, there was a decent trade for the better quality heifers which topped at 1500 for Malcolm Trevor-Jones of Shropshire who sold others to Other heifers to 1300 for Gordon Davis of Tiverton who sold others at 1150 & Ayrshire Heifers sold well to 1050 for David Sayer of Bridgwater and 820 for David Snell of Cullompton. Only A handful of cows forward to 1000 for Ian & Caroline Tapp of Tiverton. Crossbred Heifers saw strong demand to 1000 for a Normandy x Heifer and 900 for a Montbeliarde x Heifer both from Ken & Cathy Cottey of Whimple. In Calf Heifers sold to a better than expected trade to 880 x 2 for Messrs R & J Legg & Son of Bridport who sold others to 850 x 2. A consignment of May calving crossbred cows from South Battisborough Farm Partnership of Plymouth sold to an excellent trade topping at 840 with others to 820 & 800 x 2. A consignment of Heifer calves sold to a top of 190 for two Red & White Friesians & Jersey crosses to 65 apiece for Messrs Wastenage Farms Ltd of Budleigh Salterton. English Gold Top Sale of Pedigree Jersey & Guernseys The first sale of Jerseys & Guernseys to take place in the UK in 2016 at Exeter Livestock Centre saw a tremendous trade with buyers competing hard to secure quality Jerseys! It was a clean sweep for Jeff & Anthea Daw of Wiltshire with their Jubilee herd of Jerseys topping the In Calf Heifers with Jubilee Legacy Roxy by Hollylane Lilibets Legacy out of 3 VG & EX dams going back to Glanmor Xerxes Roxy EX95, she sold due in September to Actionman at 1750 to Vicky Dimond of Dorset. The Daw s also sold a tremendous Bull Jubilee Colonel also by Legacy out of the renowned Ceres Family from Sowden and is maternal brother to Jubilee Excitation Ceres EX94 that has been unbeaten in the show ring in the last two years! He sold well at 1600 to Mr Harvey of South Devon. The In Calf Heifers really were in tremendous demand and at 1500 Treginegar Dairy Farm of Padstow sold Glanmor Million Pound a heifer by Select Million out of 3 generations of VG or EX dams, she sold due in May to Messrs W Bennett of Gloucester who purchased 11 heifers. Messrs J & E Dickinson travelled down from Barnsley in South Yorkshire and sold 30 In Calf Heifers to a tremendous trade which topped at 1400 for Holmfirth Lix Naoni by Danish DJ Lix due in May to Red Poll. Others sold to 1320, 1300 x 2 & 1220 and three Autumn calving Heifers also sold well at 1000 apiece with their consignment averaged a very creditable 983! John Vooght of Dunsford sold three Maervale bred heifers by Danish DJ Broiler to 1280 & 1220! Bruce & Jenny Ravenhill-White of Umberleigh sold three In Calf heifers from their Whitenhill herd very well to 1220, 1000 & 900 whilst Oliver Neagle of Hants sold his best In Calf Heifer at 1100 for Hiltonbury Broiler Reality by Danish DJ Broiler due in July. A small entry of mixed quality Freshly Calved Heifers sold to a decent trade topping at 1320 for Hiltonbury Ace Possum by Senn Sational Paramount Ace from Oliver Neagle who sold other heifers to 1200 & A consignment of 12 Pedigree Guernsey Yearlings from Messrs Brymor Ltd made the long journey from North Yorkshire and were rewarded an excellent trade topping at 980 for Brymor Amanda 17 by Rosewood Grandees Alstar which sold to Messrs Grose of Cornwall. 4 1271 SHEEP - 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer ORPHAN LAMBS A much smaller entry were a better trade by comparison to last week with all lambs keenly bid for. Best to 20 & 18 (x3) for Howeton Farms Ltd of Exton and 19 for eleven from Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne and also for E Prettejohn of Chawleigh and 17 for both J Burrough & Co of Seaton and Rothamsted Research of North Tawton. Average per head is more than double last weeks at STORE HOGGS As expected for April numbers are drying up, and following a week of steady prime hogg trades, the sale was hard work, with similarly limited interest. Best forward sorts sold to 79 & for DG Saunders of Belstone who won first and second prize in the show with these pens and sold further pens at & 70. Our thanks go to Stuart Parris of Yarcombe for carrying out the days judging duties. Messrs Lethbridge & Lang of East Allington reached 76.50, Burrough & Fry Partners of Ottery St Mary saw 71 & and Keith Vincent of Truro peaked at 70. Several other forward sorts in the 60 s and a pen of good Scotch Hoggs from Michael Reddaway of Sampford Courtenay reached whilst the majority of the remainder were last draw and sold from Overall average is actually up 3 to GRAZING EWES & RAMS A heavy mule sold at 78 for Dan Alford of Tavistock who also sold a good Scotch ewe at 71.50, while other ewes sold to 76 & for Simon Mitchell of Truro and for Kevin Hilborn of Tavistock. 121 BREEDING EWES & EWE HOGGS A nice collective sale of mainly empty ewe hoggs for the time of year, met with much interest and a promising trade. Empty Dorset ewe hoggs sold to 124 & 114 (x2) for GM &SJ Reed of Bickleigh and 79 & 78 for Messrs Lethbridge & Lang of East Allington. While Suffolk x mule ewe hoggs rose to 94 for Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne and 81 (x2) for BG & GM Hawkins of Silverton and a pen of Zwartbles ewe hoggs realised 74 for Simon Mitchell. 721 COUPLES (293 EWES & 428 LAMBS) More forward again met a steadier trade as a few regular buyers were absent, although quality was lacking from previous weeks. FM Suffolk cross ewes with young, fresh Charollais sired double lambs from Messrs Gatehayes Partnership of Whimple topped the day at 172 ( 57.33/life) followed by Harold Keast of Crediton with Flock aged Mule doubles at 169, 168 & 157 and older Suffolk x doubles at 164 for Gerald Kingdon of Cheriton Fitzpaine. Rob & Sue Small of Ashburton parted with five well-presented 4/6T Romney Ewes with nine Hampshire sired lambs at 164 ( 58.57/life), similarly Steven Hyde of Calverleigh sold four mixed aged ewes with five Beltex sired lambs well at 154 ( 68.44/life) which claimed him second prize Ewe Couples. Singles were led by First Prize Hogg Couples being cracking NC Mules with strong Suffolk x Lambs from Messrs Milborne Wick Farms, which were bid to 165 ( 82.50/life) followed by some strong FM singles from Michael Baker of West Ogwell that achieved & 128. Plenty of other nice singles and 130 for 1 st prize ewe couples being singles from Peter Tucker of High Bickington, but still some smaller of plainer outfits under 100 be it Singles or Doubles.
