NEWS FRIENDSHIP RUN FOR APRIL The Friendship Run for April, will take place on Friday, April 20, The man in charge is President of the club, Bob Harvey. Meeting point is Cnr. Trichardt and Smuts Road (De Klerks Building) at 05:00. See you there. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR MEMBERS BORN IN APRIL LOSKOP ULTRA-MARATHON SATURDAY, 21 APRIL, 2012 Race Number available for the Ultra Marathon. One of our runners has been injured and will NOT be taking part. If you are looking for a race number let me know a.s.a.p. as you will have to notify Loskop of the change of details. Lift to Loskop One of our female runners is looking for a lift to and back from Loskop on race day. Anybody that has place in their car please let me know. SLOW MAG 42km SUNDAY, 15 APRIL, 2012 SUB 3:30 BUS Benzi Tenza will be driving a sub 3:30 bus on Sunday. If you would like to run in Benzi s bus please meet him under the Gazebo at least 30 minutes before the start of the race.

2 COMRADES ACCOMMODATION One of our members is looking for accommodation over the Comrades period (and would prefer it to be in Pietermaritzburg). If you have extra space available or know of accommodation that is available, please let the office know. ZOLA PIETERSE (BUDD) WILL BE AT THE BLITZ ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 2012 Zola Pieterse (Budd) will be at time trials next week to promote the Newton Running Shoe, come down and meet and greet. Thanks to Darrel and Sue from Optimum Running for organising this. MISSING Will all members of the club please check in their garages, tool shed, garden shed, boot of their car, caravan etc etc for the following: Bibs (Colgate, orange, white), Flags (Red), blue buckets with white lids (used for training runs) and Boksburg Athletic Club umbrellas. The club seems to be missing at least 4 buckets and these are needed for the upcoming training runs. I am looking for flags and bibs from the Colgate 2011 race as well as from the Sportsmans Warehouse race. If you have any of these items please return them to the office as soon as possible. Your co-operation will be greatly appreciated. PLEASE DONATE OLD KIT AND RUNNING SHOES to help some of our disadvantaged runners. 3 NEW WALKING/JOGGING/RUNNING GROUP (Monday Friday) Are you, or do you know of somebody, who would like to start running but does not know how to, when to, or what to do. Well then this is for you. From Monday, April 02, 2012 (so it s not an April Fool s Joke) a new group will start from the Shell Garage at the Sunward Shopping Centre, at 05:00 and we will walk and if we can we will include a bit of jogging on a 4km route. As the group becomes fitter, the less we will have to walk until eventually we will be running the full distance. Once everybody is comfortable on the 4km we will increase the distance appropriately. (The trick of this group is that the fitter runners in the group will have to run ahead and come back and fetch the slower ones, which means they will do more mileage but will still be in the group). 11 PLEASE DIARISE THIS DATE NOW. NB: Selection Criteria: An athlete must run any 4 out of 8 league events plus CGA Championships to be considered for selection to represent CGA at SA Championships. Doctor s notes and different reasons for not meeting the criteria may be considered as from 2012 due to numerous problems experienced. Athletes who were representing the country during the season will be considered, but they have a responsibility to inform the Cross Country Commission about their international involvement. Selectors discretion will apply in dealing with the merits of each athlete s case. Cross Country League Procedures. 1. All Clubs affiliated to CGA may compete in the Cross Country League. 2. New Clubs on probation are also welcome. 3. No affiliation fees get paid as clubs pay CGA at the beginning of each year. 4. Each runner must purchase an entry sticker at each League meeting. If for some reason you don t have Club colours, you must refer this to the organiser/referee. 5. Club colours to be worn and the runner to have a valid 2012 licence number on the front and back of the vest. 6. Temporary licences will be available at R10.00 per set. A temporary licence is only valid for one day and is not transferable. Please indicate with a TL on your entry sticker that your number is a temporary number. Runners from other Provinces may compete in the competitions but they may not score for a CGA club in the League. These athletes can compete with a 2012 licence number from their home province or buy a temporary licence on the day. 7. No club can run in more than one League, e.g. A League, B League, etc. 8. The first 4 runners from a club score for the A team. There is NO team competition for Sub Juniors (Under 11). 9. Licence numbers are used to process results. Please write them neatly. Fill complete all entry stickers neatly, clearly and in full. These are used to process the results. If an athlete competes in a Temporary licence number he/she must indicate a TL on the sticker and include the temporary licence number. 10. Results of the previous week s events will be sold at the following meeting. Cross Country League Scoring SENIOR MEN All leagues have the first 4 to count for A Team, next 4 for B team etc. GRAND-MASTER MEN, MASTER MEN, VETERAN MEN AND SUB VETERAN MEN This event will start at 14:55. (One league, with 4 to count). SENIOR MEN (4km) This event will be scheduled at 15:30, just before the Senior Women s event. Please note that this event has been removed from the World Champs program. Juniors participating in this event will NOT be considered as separate league for team scoring (One League, with 4 to count). SENIOR MEN (12km) Senior men can only be selected in the 12km event to represent ASA in the World Champs. (One League, with 4 to count). SENIOR WOMEN (8km) Senior women who wish to qualify for the World Cross Country Champs must run in the 8km event during our leagues so that she can be selected to run in the same event at the SA Champs. (Please note that this event is now a stand-alone event, i.e. no juniors, veterans or masters are expected to run in this event as they have their own events.

12 SENIOR WOMEN 4km (SUB-VETERAN, VETERAN, MASTER AND GRANDMASTER WOMEN WILL ALSO RUN IN THIS EVENT) PLUS BOYS 13 YEARS OF AGE This event will be scheduled at 13:40. Please note that this event has been removed from the World Champs program. Juniors, sub-veterans and masters participating in this event will NOT be considered as separate league for team scoring. (One league, with 4 to count) Boys Under 13 will be scored as a separate league from the women in this event. COMBINED LEAGUES Please note that the following events will start at the same time during our leagues but will be considered as different leagues for team scoring: Boys 13 and Senior Women (4km) starting at 13:40. Boys 16&17 and Girls 17&19 (6km) starting at 13:55. SUB JUNIORS NO team scoring.. A club may field any number of runners in a League. If a full team is not fielded, the club concerned will not score for that particular League meeting.. League scoring is as follows: 10 points are allocated to the first team, 9 points to the second team etc, in each League. The club with the most accumulated points out of 6 (six) of their best scoring leagues at the end of the season are declared the winner. NB No Birth Certificates or ID documents will be accepted after League8 on August 4, INFORMATION RE: MASTERS ATHLETICS SAMA Membership Online Registration - SAMA serves all Master Athletes through our own Masters Competitions/Events, Provincial, National as well as International. Master Athletes obtain Recognition from SAMA through the keeping of your performance statistics and SAMA records in 5 year age categories starting at age 35. Our highest recognition is awarded to Master athletes that qualify at our annual Gala function with South African National Colours. Masters Athletics in South Africa was previously known as Veterans Athletics for men and women of 30 plus and has existed in South Africa since 1974 when the then S.A. Masters Athletic Association was founded by Danie Burger, ex-springbok pole-vaulter, hurdler and decathlete, after a sojourn in the U.S.A. He was a physiotherapist / chiropractor who had studied and worked in the United States in the early 70's. At this time David Pain, an American Lawyer, organised a mile race for men of 40 plus, called masters. This concept caught on and in 1975 the first championships for veterans (or masters) took place in Toronto, Canada. South Africa was represented by 14 or 15 athletes and included well-known Springboks such as Burger himself, Fanie du Plessis (discus thrower), Anne McKenzie (800m, 1500m) and Willie Olivier (800m, 1500m, steeplechase). Monty Hacker, who was recently elected vice-president of the World Masters Athletics council was also a member of this team. Masters Athletics After 1975 Track & Field Since then world track and field championships have taken place every second year and include 8km cross country and a marathon. In 1977 they took place in Sweden, then 1979 in Germany, 1981 in New Zealand, 1983 in Puerto Rico, 1985 in Italy, 1987 in Australia, 1989 in U.S.A., 1991 in Finland, 1993 in Japan, 1995 in Buffalo, U.S.A., 1997 in Durban, 1999 in Gateshead, England, 2001 in Brisbane, Australia, 2003 in Puerto Rico, 2005 San Sebastian, Spain and the 2007 world championships is scheduled for Riccione, Italy, 2009 Lahti, Finland & this year (2011) Sacramento, USA is scheduled for Sao Paulo, Brazil. Road Running World Road running championships (10km and 21km) and race walking 20km and 30km) took place every second year in even years. These were first held as part of the non-stadia events of the World Association of Veteran Athletes (W.A.V.A.) in 1992 in Canada, then in 1994 in England, 1996 in Brugge, Belgium, 1998 in Japan, 2000 in Spain, 2002 in Riccione, Italy, and sadly the last one was held in New Zealand in However, World Masters Athletics (WMA) has introduced a Half Marathon which is held at the same time as the World Indoor Championships. This year South African Masters Athletics (SAMA) in conjunction with KZN, the host province of the S.A. Masters Track and Field championships to be held on 29 & 30 April in Durban, have taken the initiative to introduce a Half Marathon for Men and Women during the course of the championships. 14 Africa Masters Championships Since the inception of the Africa Championships which was held in 1994 in Durban, the second and third took place in 1996 and 1998 in Namibia and Mauritius respectively, and the 2002 championships was held in Mauritius again was hosted by Cameroons and 2006 were hosted by Reunion. In 2008 there were no bidders and in 2010 the championships which were scheduled for Morocco was cancelled. South African Masters Athletics (S.A.M.A.) now consists of 10 provinces, namely Central Gauteng, Western Province, Mpumalanga, Central North West, North West North, Gauteng North, Vaal Triangle, Free State, Kwazulu Natal, Border, Eastern Province, South Western Districts and Boland who each hold their own championships which are open to all athletes from other provinces. Athletics for Athletes over 30 years - Men & Woman Track and Field events for masters consist of all the usual events in which senior athletes participate. Women also participate in such events as steeplechase and pole vault. To accommodate advancing age, implements of lighter weights are used from certain ages and the heights of hurdles are lowered. This is one sport where the participants look forward to becoming older! Cross Country The inaugural S.A. Masters Cross Country Championships was held in Bloemfontein in 2001 in conjunction with the S.A. Interprovincial Cross Country Championships. Medals were supplied by SAMA and awarded in 5 year age categories to athletes 30+. Unfortunately, due to administrative issues, this association was terminated. Once again, SAMA in conjunction with KZN, the host province of the S.A. Masters Track and Field championships, have taken the initiative to introduce a full masters cross country event during the course of the championships. All age groups, men and women compete over 8 km. Registration and Entry details are available on www. mastersathletics.org.za. All welcome to compete entries close on 15 April The inaugural World Masters Indoors Championships were held in 2004 in Germany, the second in Austria in 2006, followed by in France in 2008, Canada 2010 and the next one is scheduled for Hungary in Masters athletics is open to all masters athletes (35+ men and women internationally.). However, locally provision is made for sub-masters from age 30+ for men and women, who may compete in all provincial, national and regional championships. Masters athletics is organised and adjudicated in five-year age categories, eg , 35-39, 40-44, right up to 90's!
