Please see a concerned letter from one of our members regarding runners not running the full distance at our Time Trial.

In the past few weeks there s been a trend of people cutting short on the time trial, the reason being it is too long when doing the u-turn on Ann Barnard Street. I know people are using the latest gadgets but the official route should be run at all times. Boksburg Athletics Club is a bench mark to other clubs and therefore there is always visitors or new members to our time trial and club runs, and they don t know what is happening when some runners turn left and others turn right at a certain point but they all do the same distance (be it a 4km or 8km). The very same runners don t stop short of the finish line in a race even when the race distance has been reached on their gadgets. We are a professionally run amateur club, with a reputation and rich history of the Blitz, lets protect it. The route is measured and marked officially, let s run it. Are you new to running? Just joined the Club? Not sure where to begin? Running your first race? Feeling anxious about starting out? If you answered some of those questions then the following tips may help you, Whether a long time runner, novice or not. Some tips that may just freshen the brain for the New Year and planning ahead. The good old fashioned saying Too much, too fast, too soon. I believe always remains. Have compassion on your body it is the only one you have. Learn to know your comfort zones and your limits. Learn also to know how and where you can push the boundaries in order to improve. Listen to your body at all times. 1) Shoes : The correct running shoe is always an important topic and can become a costly task. You may not be lucky to find what works for you straight away, however, ensure that you do get some expert advice with regards to what shoes you are running in or may be purchasing. As it can become costly purchasing the incorrect shoe first time round. If possible have your running gait checked (style) before purchasing shoes. You may be lucky first time round but it could take some time to find out what works for you. What works for one runner may not be what will work for you. Experiment cautiously. Knee niggles generally result from incorrect shoes. 2) Training kit : As it is summer now, ensure to chose cool comfi clothing that can allow your body to breathe while training. Ladies do ensure that what s necessary is well supported not only for the now but also the future. 3) Socks : Socks as like running shoes, can take time to find what suits you best. On your training runs play around with different socks. Some may tend to blister you. You get thick ones, thin ones, padded ones. Various types. Each runner prefers something different. However, if you do find at times you have a burning feeling from your socks it can often be the high percentage of polyester which while running heats up with the friction of the shoe and burns the foot. You will need to play around. More cotton in the sock is suggested but you chose what works. 4) Chaffing : You may or may never chafe in your running career. However, common places for chaffing is under the arms, the nipples, the inner thighs and the cuffs of the heels around

your running shoes. A good barrier used is Vaseline. There are many other antichaffing products on the market to experiment with. Men often put plasters on their nipples. it is a good idea to rub Vaseline around the cuff on the heel of your shoes, as the shoes get wet from water points and sweat, one can often chafe there. Should you run at the coast. Due to the salt in the air, chafing can be more prevalent. 5) Blisters : Blisters are often the same as chafing. You may or may never experience these. Especially on your feet. Often new shoes, running style, socks, water.there can be many reasons. A good tip to keeping those feet dry is always putting baby powder is your shoes as it absorbs any dampness and will prevent blistering. 6) Hydration : Be sure that if you are not able to hydrate during your training runs that you take in enough fluid during the day. Once again being summer, one sweats out a lot of those important minerals ie magnesium, sodium, potassium which need to be replaced. The body does not make them. That is a whole different topic. That s the tips for this week. Good luck with your running ahead. Man cannot discover new oceans, unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore Andre Gide Regards Jillian Sotto Corona Road Running Captain. Letter from Frank da Ascencao to his running group. If you would like to receive his weekly , please let the office know. Any member is welcome to join Franks training. I will attach his 2015 Comrades training program to these Snippets. Frank will be giving a talk in the Finish Line Pub on Wednesday, February 4, about the Up run and a few other issues. Please join us after time trials. (More information in the next set of Snippets but please diairise it NOW.) The New Year has started and I m sure that many of you are saying I must get started, well you need to jump in before it s too late. Sjoe! how time flies, next week Johnson Crane already. You guys must look at the calendar and plot your races and enter them before it s too late. Some races also needs special travel and accommodation arrangements. I see that some of you are not sure what races to do and where to qualify and what ultra to do, well this is what I am talking about, sit down, plan/plot/enter your races. We had our first hill session last week and the guys took strain but enjoyed it, it also was an eye opener as to our level of fitness or condition. We need to do a lot of hill work this year in preparation for the up comrades which is very tough, let me explain why. You will see in the stats below that the first half of the UP Comrades you constantly climb and the first 42k will be your toughest marathon ever. Check out the Altitude. This needs some hard work to prepare for. All the climbing takes place in the first half. Start - The race starts at sea level (let s say altitude 0m)

Tollgate - Steady climb from the start up Berea road to approximately the 6 km mark. (Altitude 91m) 45 th Cutting - Approximately 10 km onto the race, short but steep climb, (Altitude 160m) The next 4 km to the first registered hill Cowies is a continues climb to approximately (Altitude 282m) Cowies hill - Approximately 14 km from the start, difficult climb rising about 89m, length of hill 2.2 km, (Altitude 366m) Fields hill - Approximately 22 km from the start, difficult climb rising about 190m, length of hill 3.0 km, (Altitude 542m) Botha s hill - Approximately 37 km from the start, difficult climb rising about 135m, length of hill 2.4 km, (Altitude 772m) Inchanga - Approximately 44 km from the start, difficult climb rising about 139m, length of hill 2.5 km, (Altitude 793m) Having said all that I would like you all to commit to some serious hard work in the next few months if you want to have a comfortable run. As you heard we have started with some of the special training runs and some of you have missed out already, let s not allow that. This week-end we are doing a tough 28km hill run from Bedfordview Virgin Active at 5am, this will not be run fast and there is room for everyone. On Sunday we will do the Bobbies 21k race. We need to start with this type of loading on our bodies and build up as we go along. Soon we will be doing back to back marathons, that is 42km on Sat followed by another 42k on Sunday. Don t wait or delay as you will not be ready for this load and ultimately Comrades. Comrades Training Camp news, I am working on this and we have over 30 people confirmed thus far. Once all the planning is done I will advise. TRACK AND FIELD No report. No report. MULTI - SPORT CROSS COUNTRY

Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with much pleasure that I present this report, summarizing the activities of Boksburg Athletic Club for the past 12 months. Some 364 days ago, a gathering of people in Boksburg decided that an Athletic Club in the town would be a viable proposition and Boksburg Athletic Club was duly formed. From the contents of this report I hope you will agree with me that this indeed was a wise and worthwhile decision. I will deal with the various aspects of the Club activities in turn. TRACK AND FIELD: Entering the track season rather belatedly, the Club honoured a promise to other Clubs that the members of the newly formed Boksburg Athletic Club would compete for their former Clubs for the duration of the track league. Thus it was only in the latter half of the season that our track athletes competed in the now familiar blue and white hoops. Our representation in track and field was almost 100% from our junior members who acquitted themselves well. The track season culminated with Boksburg Athletic Club having two Southern Transvaal Junior Champions in Debbie Blair in the high jump and Claudio Da-Re in the javeling. Debbie and Wayne Grace who obtained South African Championship standard times travelled with Claudio to Port Elizabeth to compete in the South African Junior Championships. Excellent progress was made during the track season by several juniors among them Heather James, Lynn Cloete, Lee Kane, Alan Robertson and Peter Wall. Wayne Grace trained assiduously during the summer months, but had several unfortunate injuries which limited his progress. A major problem during the summer months was the shortage of knowledgeable Coaches. Ben Greyling shouldered the task of coaching some 50 juniors and did an heroic job, although the odds were almost insurmountable. Sid Grace did valiant work with the stop-watch and Ron Johnstone, towards the end of the season, was able to devote time to assisting Ben. No

praise can be high enough for the time and effort put in by Ben and the results he achieved. It is only in the past few weeks that we appear to have solved the coaching problem The athletes representing Boksburg Athletic Club during the track season trained hard, raced hard and conducted themselves in an exemplary manner. ROAD Brian de Lacy got the Club off to a good start, winning the inaugural Bethal Marathon last November. Boksburg Athletic Club won the team race. Brian was selected to represent Southern Transvaal in the Inter-Provincial Marathon in February, where he finished sixth in a strong field. Generally speaking, the Club was well represented in marathons during the past 12 months and some sterling runs were put in by Brian de Lacy, Ron Johnstone and the find of the year Vito Lolli. CROSS COUNTRY This sphere of athletics was probably our most successful. Up to the last league match, the Club had a chance of winning the Men s B League. On this particular day however, three of our normal counting six were unable to run and we were trounced by Callies. A period of consolidation in the B League next season can only do us the world of good. Prominent in Cross-Country amongst the Seniors were Johnstone, de Lacy and van Omman. Juniors counting in the Senior team were Wayne Grace, Dave Groom, Rob Tomlin and Lucian Marques. Star runner in the Under 15 Junior ranks was Russel Everret, who improved with every run, narrowly missing full Southern Transvaal selection. The highlight of the winter season was undoubtedly Joy Sutherland s brilliant form in the Championship races. Starting the season a bit off form, Joy came to light with a vengeance. Winning the Southern Transvaal Junior Championships, Joy went on to finish a tremendous third in the South African Championships. Well done Joy! Interspersed between races across the veld, our men s team really shook the establishment in road relays, winning one handsomely and giving the more fashionable Clubs a fright in the others. In these relay teams, our Juniors really excelled themselves and proved to be the equal of many Senior runners. The Cross-Country season was most gratifying for all connected with Boksburg Athletic Club. SOCIAL: Our first social function was the Christmas Handicap and Braai cum Discotheque and without fear of contradiction, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

This was followed some time later by a braai and film show. For these two functions we are indebted to Boksburg Round Table who gave us the use of their premises so willingly. A post-comrades Dinner Dance at the Kingfisher Restaurant in Germiston was well attended and promised to be an annual affair. Our last function was a discotheque organized for the junior members in this Clubhouse. This event proved to be an eye-opener for the more elderly members of the Club not accustomed to such functions and the relevant discotheque music. FINANCE Our Treasurer, Alan Ewart, will elaborate on our financial position, but at this stage mention must be made of the most generous help given by the Mayor of Boksburg, businessmen in the town and organizations such as Round Table and Rotary. Finance cannot be passed over without mentioning the town s number one extortionist, Steve de Bod, who, single-handed, has raised most of the money which we have on hand at this point in time. Moving to a more general theme, special thanks is also due to the Prince George Park Board of Control for all their help in providing facilities at the track and on adjoining fields, and to Derek Amore of The Boksburg Advertiser for all his support and accurate reports during the year. Before the evening is over, a new Committee will be elected. Please give consideration to the election of a Junior, as during the course of the last year, your outgoing Committee were often in need of advice as to what the juniors attitude or needs would be in certain matters. My sincere thanks goes to my Committee for all their hard work and effort during the last 12 months. It was a pleasure working with them and I hope that the Club members have seen the results of their labours. I make no apologies in singling out three individuals who did Trojan work throughout the year Ben, on hand from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the Juniors, seven days a week; Ron Johnstone, a tireless Secretary, putting the Club before his own running on numerous occasions and Steve de Bod, the human dynamo, volunteering for many diverse tasks. These fellows were a constant spur and inspiration to me. I feel that during the past year we didn t even begin to scratch the surface and realize the potential of Boksburg Athletic Club. Hopefully your new Committee will learn from whatever mistakes the outgoing Committee may have made and capitalize on any good work it may have done. For me, the past year has gone very quickly and after many years in athletics, I can say with all sincerity it has been my most enjoyable. It has been a pleasure working with and for the athletes of Boksburg Athletic Club.
