5 The Triathlon Canada Nation Triathlon Canada has an incredible legacy and history in our sport internationally. Canada has been at the forefront of the sport of triathlon with our athletic performances from the early days in the 80s and 90s. The path of excellence was blazed by Carol Montgomery, Patricia and Sylviane Puntous, Peter Reid and Lori Bowden, just to name a few athletes who inspired countless triathletes with their world championship performances. Those trailblazers laid the foundation for Simon Whitfield s nation-moving gold-medal performance when the sport made its debut at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. Triathlon Canada never looked back from that historic day, which ultimately cemented us as a premiere triathlon nation on the international scene. Inspired by all of the greats before us to swim, bike and run, Triathlon Canada has since developed and produced countless memorable performances by triathletes of all ages in a variety of race distances. From Paula Findlay winning an unprecedented five World Triathlon Series titles to Kirsten Sweetland running into the history books as only the second Canadian ever to reach the World Triathlon Series podium and third ever to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, our women have rewritten the history books over the last eight years. Simon Whitfield aside, the performances by our men have been equally remarkable on the big stage, led by Stefan Daniel s Paratriathlon World Championship title just one year before he won the silver at the sport s Paralympic debut in Rio Canada s long distance athletes have also been capturing the world s attention. Brent McMahon and Lionel Sanders cracked an unprecedented sub-8-hour mark in Ironman distance, and Heather Wurtele is a 6-time Ironman titleholder who is fully committed to the long game. Canada saw explosive growth in the sport after 2000, and we now have a core group of more than 22,000 athletes, coaches, offcials and volunteers who make up our unique triathlon community. 6 Our Story Triathlon for Canadians As Canadians, it s in our nature to run, swim and ride a bike at an early age. Our wide-open spaces and big water are made for it, so putting all three together just seems natural. It s called Triathlon, and it s in our collective DNA. Everyone can do it, and Canadian athletes are among the world leaders in the sport. Triathlon Canada supports athletes in reaching the Olympic and Paralympic podium, but we also hope to inspire any Canadians who simply want to discover what they re really made of. 7 Quest for the Podium At our core, Triathlon Canada is about paving the road for Canadian athletes to the Olympic and Paralympic podium. Triathlon s debut at the 2000 Sidney Olympic games, which culminated with Simon Whitfield s gold medal, springboarded Canada onto the world stage. This big bang moment, along with our National Team s continued success, has set the standard that Triathlon Canada and the rest of the world measures itself against. As a result, Triathlon Canada s National Team has always held places for athletes competing at the highest level in both the standard distance and sprint distances while vying for podium performances at the World Championships and Olympic Games. It is an exciting time, as the landscape for this sport shifts. The addition of the Mixed Team Relay division has been announced for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo - creating another strong opportunity for a Canadian Olympic podium performance. 11 Meet the Athletes Age Group Team Canada Triathlon Canada makes up one of the world s largest Federations in the sport of triathlon. Our Age Group Team ranges between 250 and 400 athletes competing at the international World Championship events. In 2017 Canada hosted the first ever ITU Multisport World Championship Festival in Penticton, BC. This festival included events in 5 different disciplines over an intensive 10- day period. Age Group Team Canada for this domestic event included over 900 athletes. These are a diverse, passionate, and driven collection of Canadians representing our country from coast to coast. The Demographics Triathletes tend to be active, educated, and affuent professionals with a disposable income and the inclination to spend on: equipment, apparel, vehicles, electronics, financial services, travel, and other premium products or services. Teams of four athletes (two men and two women) complete a full super sprint triathlon each with their cumulative time making up the team score. The core team is comprised of four, with an additional male and female as alternates. This will be a fast-paced, short course event with a small field and tons of exposure. Only 12 to 13 teams will qualify based on the 2019 World Championships. Team Canada is highly ranked in this event and has a strong chance at qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Summer Games.
