2 THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE Beginnings John Geraci We are now beginning my second year as Commodore and I have to say that it has been a very rewarding experience! I have gotten to know many of you personally, taken the boat out on more trips than I would have previously, and feel that I have taken the helm of a sailing association that is going places. First, I would like to highlight what was said at the awards dinner, that the success of the club is through everyone. Without those of you who cruise or race, the ECSA wouldn t exist. I welcome suggestions and comments directly that is why I have my address on the newsletter. I m also looking forward to the many cruises, especially the Miami Boat Show bus trip, as we are co-hosting it with the Coleman s. It combines a relaxing ride south (you don t have to deal with the traffic; just leave the driving to us well, not really Joe or I, but the professional bus driver!), breakfast to make sure that you re fortified for your foray into the massive boat displays, and a bracing beverage to ensure that those few extra bucks that you ve been hoarding in your wallet get released. I promise to board the bus from the rest stop at least with the others, and not be the last one on (lest I get the rousing boooooo from the rest of you again). This year s shopping list might include a new set of blades for my folding prop. I have noticed over the years since I had originally purchased the prop, that the drive force seems diminished over my previous propeller s performance a Detroit wheel knockoff of the Martec. Considering that the previous owner was an engineer and, in his own right, had correctly sized the prop with the correct outer surface area, who am I to disagree, after all. The next item sought at the boat show really isn t at the boat show at all, but in the Cuban restaurant at Bay Side. Having been born in Miami, I still have a taste for the great diversity of food in the city. As we all start 2011 with our fun cruises and great group of sailors, I want to say thank you again to the ECSA membership for bringing the opportunity to make this a fun and adventure-packed year um, no, I m not going to lead the group out into the Gulf Stream with 20- foot waves or anything like that; that s not the adventure that I m talking about. I m talking about going to some VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE The Year Ahead Joe Coleman With every New Year come new challenges, resolutions and promises, and this year is no different. In recent years, I have noticed a significant decline in club participation at meetings, cruises and even special events, such as the awards banquet. Although the people who do attend these functions always have a great time, I wonder why more people don t come to these events. What is it that we are missing or doing wrong? After pondering this question, it finally came to me. Some days the dock is filled with boats and on other days people are out sailing. Looking back on our 16-plus years with the club, one thing that stands out is the number of people we have met through sailing. When we first joined, the membership was declining. Cruises had four to five boats at the most, and the pot luck dinners usually took place on someone s boat. Then for the next several years, the membership started to increase and we started seeing more boats on the monthly rendezvous and more people at the monthly meetings. It wasn t the programs that brought people in, or new and exciting places to sail to, it was the people. When we first bought Alibi, Karen s father suggested that we join a sailing club. He had been a member of the Alberg 30 Sailing Association in Maryland ever since he bought his boat. I remember him saying that the people you meet sailing are special and will be your friends forever, and he was right. As people have left the club to go sailing around the world, or have moved out of the area, or had other circumstances causing them to leave, or if they have gone beyond to that special sailing place where the seas are calm and the winds are always gentle, we continue to talk of them fondly as if they were still here with us. We enjoy those memories as we start to make new ones with our newfound sailing friends. So for me, this new year of challenges, resolutions and promises will not be spent worrying about the membership, participation, or meetings; it will be about enjoying the wonderful people that we have with us in the club now. Our January 22 race was canceled due to too much wind and risk of boat damage. Our race committee is always looking out for us and for our boats. We are looking forward to our next race on February 26. There are plenty of other racing opportunities coming up. February 12 is the ECSA coed race. February 19 is the next race of the J24 Fleet 87 series. Melbourne Yacht Club s next rum races are February 5 and 19. As always, anyone interested in racing or learning to sail is welcome. Susan susanjackson@wellnessforward.com PROGRAM CHAIRMAN NEEDED! ECSA members are all greatly saddened at the recent death of our Program Chairman, Alan Clendinen. (See page 7 for more about Alan.) His passing will be felt by many people in many ways. As an organization, the ECSA has benefited greatly from Alan s tenure as Program Chairman. As Alan did not have an opportunity to schedule any programs for 2011, we are anxious to have a volunteer to step in and take over this responsibility. If you would be willing to consider arranging the programs for our general membership meetings for this year, please contact John Geraci (avventura@cfl.rr.com) or any Board member ECSA Directories will be available at the February 9th meeting. Pick yours up and save us the postage! Page 3

4 Secretary s Report Loretta Schnitzius EAST COAST SAILING ASSOCIATION General Membership Meeting and Awards Banquet Saturday, January 8, 2011 Board Members Present: John Geraci, Del Wiese, Jim Edwards, Loretta Schnitzius, Karen Coleman. Elected Governors present: David Cordial, Don Theriault, David Keane CALL TO ORDER: Commodore John Geraci called the meeting to order at 6:35 pm. Following introduction of the board members, fleet captains, program chairs, and past commodores, John welcomed several guests. SECRETARY/TREASURER REPORTS: Motions were made, seconded and carried to approve the minutes of the December 2010 general membership meeting and the December 2010 Treasurer's report, as published in the January Foot, Tack & Clew. One question arose about the Treasurer's report in regard to a $500 expense for merchandise. Karen reported that it was for caps and burgees. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned for dinner. Following the dinner, Joe Coleman conducted a nautical quiz and gave out fun awards. Then the racing and cruising awards were presented and new and remaining officers were officially installed. Commodore John Geraci Vice Commodore Joe Coleman Rear Commodore Jim Edwards Secretary open position Treasurer Karen Coleman Board of Governors Del Wiese, David Keane and Don Theriault Fleet Captains: Cruising Page Proffitt River Racing Tom Knowlton Women's Racing Susan Jackson A big thank-you was extended to Del Wiese and everyone who had a hand in making this a great event and also a big thank-you to Melbourne Yacht Club for allowing the ECSA to use this great facility. Thanks to everyone who came to the banquet. Music and dancing were provided by Sass & Brass. Respectfully submitted, Loretta Schnitzius, Secretary ECSA Frost Bite Cruise to Ballard Park Page Proffitt We had another cold Frost Bite Cruise on January 22, but with all our great friends we were able to warm it up. Ballard Park had winds out of the northwest at 20 for the start and temperatures in the low 60s. Large white caps were on the river, keeping a few of our cruisers away. With a few modifications to the shelter we were able to get nice and warm. We had over 36 people attending the cruise and two boats showing up: the Williams family on SirVeyor2 and Marlene Sassaman with her crew of ladies on her Corsair F 28, Spray. The grills were ready to cook on by a little after 5 p.m. and the food was brought out. And what a spread it was! After dinner a number of us hung out around the computer looking over where we could take our personal cruises this year. The conversations steered to the Abacos and all the good times that were had over there. As the temperatures kept falling, things started breaking up around 8 p.m., leaving the sailors to hunker down for the cool night. Sunday morning came with fresh Krispy Kreme donuts and hot coffee and hot chocolate. We had 13 show for breakfast with the cruisers still trying to warm up. Fortunately, the winds died down to make it an easy sail home. Page Page 4

Vero Beach Review Karen Coleman There was no scheduled host for the annual cruise to Vero Beach, to welcome in the New Year, but we managed well without one this year. We had plenty of veterans from previous years who knew places to go and things to do to keep us occupied. Joe and I departed Wednesday morning with Alibi, followed by the Cordials on Mrs. C. Joe Coleman (Continued from page 5) the Vero Beach City Marina, we were joined for dinner at the Riverside Café by former ECSA member Kay Sparrow with grandson Jacob. There were more arrivals Thursday through the day: Chip and Louise Worster on Chip Ahoy, Don and Joanne Theriault on Impulse, Bob Wiley on Judith III, David and Nancy Keane on Chivaree, Bob and Adrianne Goldstein on Restless, and Burt Pareja and Christal Wood on Seaventure. That evening we all went to the weekly hors d oeuvres party in one of the pavilions and were surprised to find Marlene Sassaman (Spray) there. She was on her way home from sailing further south and decided to stop into the marina for the first time. She quickly saw why we love to go back year after year. Friday we all got on the free bus and went to breakfast together across the river. Everyone spent the rest of the day involved in their own activities or socializing with others, and Al Budding and Jennifer Beach arrived on Tanden. It was New Years Eve, and we knew from experience that the local restaurants would be packed and pricier that night, so we met at the pavilion for the usual wonderful pot luck dinner. Kay and Jacob returned to join us, as well as John and Loretta Schnitzius, who had driven down for the evening. New Years Day, the Cordials, Keanes and Worsters left for home. I rode my handy folding bike up the road to see if our favorite ice cream place on the beach had really closed, as we had been told. It was in fact open, so some of us dinghied up the creek later to have lunch and ice cream cones there. We thought we might dinghy across the river to the Lobster Shanty for dinner, but it was pretty breezy and choppy, besides being dark, so we walked to the Riverside Café and filled a couple of tables there instead. The next day was Sunday and time for the rest of us to head home, except for Al and Jennifer who continued to travel south on their way to the Bahamas smart couple! The weather was pretty nice for the whole cruise and I believe that everyone had a good time. Let s do it again next year! Please send classified ad updates to Mary Ann at maoshea@bellsouth.net or call Page 6

7 In Memory of Alan Alan Clendinen became a member of the ECSA in 2007 with his wife, Jennifer, and their three children. They were soon seen at most meetings and many cruises. It was evident that Alan had overcome adversity and we admired his positive outlook, his sense of adventure and his belief that he could do anything. Indeed, as we learned his story, we believed it, too. He repaired boats until he lost an arm to an alligator. Then he learned about computers and worked in an Apple dealership. After he was gravely injured and lost his sight in an explosion, he went to college and earned a BA in Business Information Systems - with a 3.98 GPA! He had an amazing memory and could do complicated mathematical calculations in his head. He worked at the Kennedy Space Center as a computer programmer. Alan was also an intrepid adventurer who loved to travel. He spoke three languages. He loved a good joke and told outrageous stories to his children. He loved to be on the water with his family and they had a wonderful trip to the Bahamas on their new boat last year. When the ECSA needed a Program Chairman last year, Alan volunteered to fill the position. He loved to meet new people and was always eager to learn something new or to hear about others sailing adventures. His curiosity became our benefit and he volunteered to continue bringing speakers to the meetings again this year. Alan was a man of great faith, believing that he had been saved by two miracles, and he had an indomitable spirit. It was a terrible blow to the family when he was told he had cancer in December and a shock to everyone when he passed away suddenly in January. Jennifer, Daniel, Amanda, and Adam have lost their navigator and best buddy. We have all lost a friend, but we will remember him fondly and wish him smooth sailing eternally. Many Thanks from the Clendinen Family To our many ECSA friends: I want to give my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the many expressions of love and care that have been shown to our family during the past month from the club. From visits and cards while my beloved Alan was sick to the expressions of sympathy since, this group has been nothing but supportive. To see so many of your faces at Alan s memorial was truly overwhelming and I just want to say that we love you all. One of the first things that we noticed when we joined was the way that members made sure that Alan was always included in conversations or whatever else was going on. When you are blind, that is worth its weight in gold. This allowed me to leave his side and chase the kids, or just get involved in different conversations and activities. We have both thoroughly enjoyed our time with the ECSA. Alan loved the club. He got a big kick out of being Program Chairman because it gave him an opportunity to arrange talks on topics that he particularly wanted to hear about. Most of all, it gave him the chance to feel truly involved and supportive of a group that he valued highly. I used to tease him that he was an ECSA evangelist because he was always trying to talk someone into joining. We ll miss him. Jennifer Clendinen and kids Morning Star Karen Coleman A Man for All Seasons I didn t know Alan for very long, and I can t say that I knew him well, other than as a fellow sailor, but I shall never forget him. We frequently hear people complain about sickness, financial loss, the loss of loved ones. Lord why do you visit these trials upon me? Alan was truly tested in his life. He focused on the things God gave him a loving wife, loving kids, a great brain, and a love for the world around him even if he could only hear, smell and touch it. Alan, in so short a time, has taught us always to look at the abundance of life if we just close our eyes and see. Alan a man for all seasons. We will miss him. Tom O Shea Page 7
