2 THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE Joe Coleman What s this in my mailbox? Yes, we are sending out the Foot, Tack & Clew by mail again, by popular demand. When we decided to do this at the general membership meeting last month, we received an overwhelming yea. The original thought was that since everyone has a computer, ipad, internet, wifi, Facebook, and/or smart phone, they could just pull it up on one of their devices and read it there. Well, boy, were we wrong! I found that many folks enjoyed looking through the paper version more than reading it on line. So from now on, the FT&C will be mailed out to all members every month. I would like to thank all of you who wished me a speedy recovery after my back surgery. My back is doing great. No pain and discomfort, and I can actually walk more than ten feet without falling over. However, I am driving Karen and others crazy. I have this brace that I have to wear for the next four months, which is kind of a pain, but we are getting into the cooler part of the year which will make it more tolerable. Along with that I have a list full of things you cannot do which is driving me - and ultimately Karen - mad. No lifting over fifteen pounds, no bending, no twisting, don t sit too long, don t stand too long, and basically, don t live your life as you are used to doing. I know that this is all necessary for a full recovery, and I do want that, but I am a doer not a sitter (unless it is at a pub). I pace, wander, roam, moan and mope, which gets on Karen s nerves and affects everyone else who is around. The poor people who are going on the Erie Canal trip next summer have been bombarded with s from me as if the trip were next week. Sorry guys, I can t help it. It s my ADD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, etc. I was very pleased at the response for volunteers for the Seven Seas GAM November 15-18, but we still have a few spots to fill. So if you have not signed up and would like to attend and help, please me a.s.a.p. John is coordinating things with Judy at the SSCA and it should be another prosperous adventure. We also had a fantastic response for volunteers to fill the positions on the board and it seems that we have a full slate. Serving on the board has always been more fun than work, and I think that is the reason people volunteer again and again. The nominees are listed in this newsletter as required. It s not too late to volunteer for one of the supporting positions, so if you have an interest, please let someone on the board know. The Annual Dinner is just around the corner and we are accepting reservations. It has always been a great night out with friends and this year will be no different. There is a lot planned for the evening, and Donna has done a fantastic job finding a venue and making all the arrangements. Please don t wait till the last minute to make your reservations. The form is printed right here in the FT&C (page 8). All you have (Continued on page 6) VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE Giving Thanks Donna Oyer Jim and I recently spent our anniversary in Key West, at a very charming Bed and Breakfast. We stayed away from the touristy areas which really wasn t that difficult. We have been to Key West many times, but we never really got to know her. For this visit, we took our time and just enjoyed learning the history of the island. That is just another place we want to take Believe when we retire. Gee, we better hurry up and retire pretty soon because our list is growing! The coral reef off of Key West is the third largest in the world, and the reef is 160 miles long. I had no idea! There are 42 bridges that connect Key West to the mainland of Florida and driving over them is picturesque. All of the sand on the beaches of Key West was shipped in on barges from the Caribbean. One of our favorite beaches in the Keys is Bahia Honda, with soft white sand and crystal clear water. We also spent some time on the beach of the southernmost state park, Fort Zachary Taylor. Fort Zachary Taylor was built in the 1800 s to defend the nation s southeastern coastline. It is amazing how the fort was built so many years ago and some of the original fort still stands today. We also learned that all of the homes in Key West have metal roofs. During a devastating fire many, many years ago, the only homes that survived the fire were homes with metal roofs. Now all homes in Key West have mandatory metal roofs. Not surprising is the fact that Key West has more bars per capita than any other place in the country, but what is also surprising is that there are as many churches per capita too. The entire island of Key West is a bird sanctuary. There are hundreds of species of birds there, and they are all protected. If you have been there before, then you know that it is not unusual to see roosters running about, and, of course, they are also protected. One evening we had the pleasure of taking a sunset sail aboard the schooner Spirit of Independence. The owner of the boat, Captain Rick Sands, purchased her at the beginning of 2013 in Norfolk, Virginia. The original owner of the boat had the boat custom built, but never had the opportunity to sail her. The schooner is 62 ft. on deck and 80 ft. LOA. Believe it or not, Captain Rick sailed her from Norfolk, Virginia, to Key West via the ICW with a 7ft. draft. Can you believe that? Captain Rick gave us free reign to tour his ship. The ship was absolutely beautiful down below and on deck. Jim actually got to take the helm at one point while I was snooping around. It was an amazing evening far off of Mallory Square, watching the splendor of the sun setting into the abyss. For those of us who live in Florida and tend to take it for granted, a trip to the Keys reminds us how beautiful our paradise is. From the foliage to the pale blues of the Gulf and the Atlantic, the Keys offer a taste of why so many of us decided to migrate. When returning home from our Keys getaway, driving along the causeway as we made our way over the ICW (Continued on page 6) Page 2

Rotary Park is located at mile marker 908 (Latitude N, Longitude W) on the west side of the ICW just north of the Pineda Causeway. The anchoring is generally good in a sandy bottom. The park pavilion offers restrooms, BBQ grills, electricity and shelter from storms. There is a small beach area for swimming and dinghy parking. There is also a pier which runs out into the anchorage, but the side is rather steep and not easy to exit or enter your dinghy from. Please use caution if you tie up here. The festivities begin at noon on Saturday. Please sign in at the registration booth when you arrive. Barbecue will be provided by Dave Hutson. Attendees should bring additional dishes to complement the BBQ, and desserts! Paper plates, cutlery, ice and cups will be provided by the club. 6 COMMODORE S THOUGHTS Continued from page 2 VICE COMMODORE VIEW Continued from page 2 to do is fill it out, write a check and mail it in. Speaking of reservations, John has booked the bus for the Miami Boat Show. We plan to have the same pick-up locations, and the price should be just about the same as last year. We ll open the bus up to members and guests of the membership first, then MYC and all others, so again (good grief, you have heard this enough!) don t wait till the last minute. We will serve the usual continental breakfast on the way down and snacks on the way back. Hopefully this year we won t have a flat tire, but in case we do, I will bring a few movies and a bottle of rum. One last thing: If you are planning a trip next year to the Bahamas, Keys, or other locations and want company, please let us know so we can publish the information in the newsletter. John Geraci is planning a trip to St. Augustine in May; he will provide more information sometime soon. Those of you who took cruises last year, please Chip Worster for consideration for our annual awards. Also don t forget to submit your photos for the photo contest to Bob Wiley. Joe and then the Banana River, I felt the same sense of gratitude. I love the place we call home, especially when I talk to my girlfriend who lives in Stratford, Connecticut. Their temperatures have already plummeted into the 30 s, and a whisper of snow is in the forecast. I don t miss the cold, the snow, or the changing seasons. I am perfectly content with the 90 s, the beach, and a night, anytime, at anchor. In a few weeks we will be celebrating Thanksgiving. I wish all of you a special day filled with the love of family and friends. I know that I personally try to be grateful for just being, every day. Thanksgiving is the thankful holiday. Give thanks, count your blessings, and love one another. Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! Happy Sails to You, Donna Boy Scout Island Review Jennifer Clendinen Boy Scout Island was the site of a great get together. A couple of boats arrived early on Friday for Happy Hour at the Cordial s house on shore. Thank you, Dave and Gail! Several others arrived by land yacht to socialize. The rest of the ten boats in attendance began to arrive the following afternoon. The weather was absolutely perfect with nice, if shifting, winds and beautiful temperatures. We shared the beach in the afternoon with several motor boats who came and went through the day. Most everyone had arrived by dinner time and provided quite a spread. Many took advantage of the open grill to whip up some gourmet treats (i.e., hotdogs). Later, as the sun began to set, we built a fire and quite a few partook of the age-old tradition of marshmallows/s mores, depending on their tastes. Lots of stickiness, particularly on the kids faces and hands. A good time was had by all. Sunday morning after breakfast, there was a nice northerly breeze for those who were headed south and we saw lots of sails opened for the return trip. We hope that you all had a great sail back. Those of us headed north had to start our motors! In attendance were Jennifer Clendinen and family on Morning Star, Don and Joanne Theriault on Impulse, Chip and Louise Worster on Chip Ahoy, Bob Wiley on Judith III, Dave and Gail Cordial and George Schorn arriving from shore compliments of Bob Wiley s on-thewater limousine service, Terry Schorn arriving in a kayak, Tom and Mary Ann O Shea on Southern Comfort, Susan Conrad and Rick Hushla on Angel, Clay and Patty Showen on Lone Star, Brad and Angie Stowers on Santé, Nate and Wendy Miller and family on Windy Lou, and of course, Roland the Magnificent on Captiva. Thank you so much for coming out and making this such a successful weekend! See you again next year! Jennifer Clendinen Page 6

7 ECSA Photo Contest Bob Wiley As of October 22, there were NO entries in the 2013 Photo Contest. This reminds me of the annual NPR pledge campaign. Donations drag along until, at the last minute, they seem always to get their money. However, I don t see evidence that there will be any entries. Remember there are TWO prizes of $100 each. The best photo category only requires one entry to win, so even if you didn t attend all the club functions, your one photo can take the prize!
