THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE John Geraci Boat Yard Magnetism Occasionally, I need to take Avventura down to the boat yard to have the bottom cleaned and repainted. Sometimes there is the need to work on things below the waterline. Now I m a big believer that the water should stay on the outside of the hull and the inside should stay dry. I have had to replace a failed gate valve while I was still floating at my dock. Keep in mind that this was an emergency repair, and I needed to get the valve that should never be on a boat out of there. So we (yes I had help) started to remove the valve off the through hull, and just as I got to the last thread, off popped the valve. A stream of water over a foot and a half gushed through the pipe. I quickly threaded the new ball valve on and shut off the valve whew! That was harrowing to see water coming in that fast. Of course, I probably got no more than half a gallon in the bilge, but my pulse was racing and I could just sense the boat cringe when I let the water in. So that is why I have the philosophy of having the outside of the hull dry when I work on the valves and through hulls. Well, I hauled Avventura out to have the bottom painted, and as she was coming out of the water, one of the yard staff with the lift says those dreaded words you don t want to hear: Uh-Oh! I can just hear the sound of boat units racking up. When I looked, my propeller strut was broken in half, with the bottom part hanging below my propeller shaft and the upper part still attached. Whoa! Now I can t just waltz down to the local Pearson store and get a strut off the shelf, since they haven t manufactured my boat for quite a long time do you see the pull of the boat yard beginning? Once your baby is cradled in the yard, it takes an inordinate number of boat units to counteract that pull to free her! Given that you now have to locate a rare part, you also discover that the through hulls are in big need of replacement (the pull gets stronger), so I go to the marine store and buy the modern day equivalent of my seacocks (which are 1 ½ ) to install. Am I almost free? Heck no! The seacocks are not custom made for the curve of the hull, like the ones that were used during her manufacture, so I have to overcome even more yard pull by making a custom standoff. The boat used to displace 16,000 lbs, and now she is approaching a heavy cruiser with the force required to overcome the inertia of the yard, growing as each day I walk around (Continued on page 6) VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE Joe Coleman Dania Flea Market Just when you thought it was safe to keep money in your pocket, along came the Dania Nautical Flea Market. For those of you who have never been before, the Dania Nautical Flea market is supposed to be the garage sale of all garage sales for boaters. This flea market consists of everything you saw at the Miami Boat show, except somebody used it for a year and then put it up for sale. Last month I went to Dania with John and Lynda Geraci and their grandson, Jordan (who is one heck of a Pokémon player). I had just finished re-wiring Alibi and did not have anything in mind to look for or to purchase. I thought this is the way you should go to a flea market - no pressure. Although I did not have any particular item in mind to buy, I figured I could always find something I might need for the boat. When we arrived, I was amazed at the size of the event. It seemed to go on forever with more booths than I remember ever seeing there, even when it was held at Joe Robbie Stadium years ago. As we entered I saw a few familiar booths that automatically draw people inside. Yes I m talking about the beer tents. I am sure there were more this year than I had seen in the past, and I thought to myself, This is going to be one great trip. Once inside, we started up and down the aisles. Of course not looking for one particular thing leaves you time to wander aimlessly around each booth enjoying the vendor s wares. I am not a fisherman, but I now know that they sell a red and blue fishing lure with a yellow stripe down the bottom which will draw the dolphins directly to your line. The hook is also scented with a fragrance that is irresistible to any self-respecting dolphin. I can only acquire this sort of knowledge when I have no special item to look for with a purchase in mind. Idle time is the devils workshop. I even stopped to look at jewelry, t-shirts, paintings, wood carvings, and of course, funny antique nautical signs. It was all there. You could find a boat at one booth, finance it at another, then just two booths down, you could insure it. With each purchase comes a free VISA card and a tote bag. You could then subscribe to the Miami Journal, get health and dental insurance, and have your taxes done while waiting for your dry cleaning. All this while enjoying an ice cold Budweiser from one of the many beer tents. Yes, an idle mind with no particular goal can become a wasted mind. (Continued on page 6) Page 2

Our March 26 race brought out four J24 s and one J30 once again. It was another gorgeous day on the water with sunshine and pleasant wind. One-design racing is tough but fun. Starts were close, except when Linda Tillman seemed to be the only boat not over early, and from my point of view, appeared to be out in front the entire race. How I hate it when I m too far away to see what the winning boats are doing! Finishes were close as well. Marlene Sassaman and I had a competitive encounter at the finish, with J-Peas finishing only inches ahead. Results are on the ECSA website, but here are the top three finishers in order. First race: Linda Tillman on Mischief, Rochelle Yates on J Mouse, Marlene Sassaman on the Other Half. Second race: J Mouse, Mischief, myself on J-Peas. Also racing was Rachele Ross on Sleighride. I m pleased to be racing with such fabulous ladies skippers! Come on out and join us. 4 Secretary s Report Nancy Keane EAST COAST SAILING ASSOCIATION General Membership Meeting March 9, 2011 Board Members Present: John Geraci, Del Wiese, Jim Edwards, Joe Coleman, Karen Coleman, and Nancy Keane. Elected Governors present: Don Theriault, David Keane, Del Wiese. CALL TO ORDER: Commodore John Geraci called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Following introduction of the board members, fleet captains, program chairs, and past commodores, John welcomed two guests. NEW MEMBERS: The following were presented and approved for membership. Dennis and Diane Peterson, Cocoa, Morgan 24, Classic Bell, at the house. Bill and Norma Howard, Cocoa Beach, Cape Dory 30, Golden Days, at Bohemia Yacht Harbor. Dave Silverman, Indian Harbor Beach, J24, Mischief. Pat and Angela Lambert, Palm Bay, Morgan 24, Down Pat, at the house. Kirk and Peg Adams, Satellite Beach, Gemini 34, Redemption SECRETARY/TREASURER REPORTS: Motions were made, seconded and carried to approve the minutes of the February, 2011, General Membership meeting and the Treasurer's report, as published in the March Foot, Tack & Clew. COMMODORE John Geraci: Directories are still being distributed. See John Geraci after the meeting if you did not receive one. Discussion followed regarding posting the directory as a PDF on the website or sending it directly via to members. Concerns included the security issues related to sending address information over the internet. The Boat Show trip was a rousing success. A total of 47 adventurers enjoyed drink, eats and camaraderie as they headed south to the Miami Boat Show. We are working on improving the website by making it more informative and easy to access events that we are hosting. If we can secure a member page with password protection, the directory could be placed there. VICE COMMODORE Joe Coleman: Club Awareness: Joe Coleman talked about getting publicity about our club to the public with a poster that could be displayed in area businesses. Joe presented the idea of a member poster contest. Joe displayed several of the posters he created. He asked that members submit their ideas in May so that we can vote at the May meeting for the poster to represent our club. The Dania Beach Marine Flea Market will take place on March Joe stated that he and a couple of other members are going and that carpooling could be arranged for those interested. He said that it is worth a visit. Contact Joe for more information. Several years ago, the ECSA created a cruising book which included all of the events, with directions, how to approach, anchoring information and more. We would like to create a new cruising book which would include not only the above information but ideas from our membership with their favorite anchorages and explorations. A form will be created and sent out to the general members to gather this information. We hope to publish this cruising book on the website by the end of summer. REAR COMMODORE Jim Edwards: Jim reported that the next river race is set for Saturday, March 12. On March 26, the women will race. Dave Noble does an excellent running commentary on the exhilarating racing that goes on in our club. Jim will excerpt some of this for the Foot, Tack, and Clew. Cruising Page Proffitt: Bob Wiley reported that the Mardi Gras Cruise was great. Everyone enjoyed a good dinner at El Charro, watched the floats, and good fun was had by all. On (Continued on page 8) Page 4

Cruising Notes Shuttle Launch Page Proffitt Shuttle Endeavour is currently scheduled to launch at 7:48 p.m. on April 19th. (Check the latest information at index.html.) A number of us will be traveling up the Indian River just north of the Addison Point Bridge, in the area east of the ICW. The Addison Point Bridge will lock down three hours before the scheduled launch, so plan your arrival time accordingly. Look for the ECSA burgees so we can all get together. Spring Race Time Page Proffitt Come out to the Small or Big Boat Regattas on April 15th and 16th at Ballard Park, and April 30th and May 1st at MYC, respectively, and join in. We will have a large cruisers fleet this year for all to enjoy. Check out the Flier, Notice of Race, and Registration Form for each on the Sail-Race website ( myc/index.htm) Mardi Gras Cruise Review Bob Wiley The 2011 Mardi Gras Cruise was an amazing event for at least three reasons. 1)The winds were such that we actually got to sail to the event (if you were coming from the south). 2)The weather for the parade was more than 'decent'; only a light jacket was needed. And 3) my trip went from being solo to a crew of four, three of whom had never been on a sailboat before, so they had a memorable outing. All this led to good attendance at both the dinner at El Charro Restaurant and the pot luck breakfast at the Cocoa Village Marina clubhouse. Those arriving by boat were: David Keane with his guest, Terry Thompson, on Chivaree, JoAnn and Don Theriault on Impulse, Mary Ann and Tom O'Shea on Southern Comfort, Gail and Dave Cordial with his mother, Ruth, on Mrs C, Carol and Jim Aitken on Linda Mae, Pam and Ken Windsor with guest, Marcellus Furtado, on Imagine, Bob Wiley with guests, Jeanne Dery, Matt and Teresa Dery and Alisann Del Favero, on Judith III, and on their first cruise with ECSA, Cherie and Robert Baird on Wanderlust. Choosing land transport were: Clay Bernichon and Pat O'Brien with guests Sherry and Dan Goodrich, Karen and Joe Coleman, Louise and Chip Worster, Terry and George Schorn, and Loretta and John Schnitzius. Following dinner, the group assembled along the parade route on Brevard Ave near the Myrt Tharpe Square, where some availed themselves of nearby vendors of food and drink to pass the time until the floats arrived. The parade was pretty much the same as prior years with plenty of beads tossed to the bystanders. ECSA'ers seemed to get their fair share, but no count was made before the group made their way home, so everyone can claim 'bragging' rights. There was an abundance of food at the pot luck breakfast where Gail Cordial and George Schorn played chefs, preparing scrambled eggs and sausage and blueberry pancakes, respectively, for the entire group. Others provided dishes including pastries, fruit, bagels, and quiches. No one seemed to leave hungry. This was my first time being cruise host and I appreciate all the cooperation and assistance provided by the attendees. Hopefully, it was as good an experience for all of you as it was for me. Photos have been posted on the club website. Oh, yes, the single-handed trip home returned to the usual cruise conditions wind on the nose and motoring. Bob Wiley Page 5

COMMODORE S THOUGHTS (continued) (Continued from page 2) the hull and notice something else. In the end, many, many boat units were thrown at the problems discovered in order to release our boat from the grip of the yard. Most recently, on the cruise to Titusville, my wife, Lynda, discovered that our forward chock was broken off from the bow so it is back to the yard to get that fixed and to repair the toe rail that was damaged. But wait! There s more: my bow pulpit has two cracks I m beginning to feel that familiar tug of the yard again Free your boat, go sailing! John (Continued from page 2) So my advice to you is to always go to a boat show or flea market to buy something. It keeps your mind sharp, keeps you focused, and of course, you can always celebrate your purchase with the cold beer. Joe VICE COMMODORE VIEW (continued) Dixie Crossroads Review John & Loretta Schnitzius Our annual cruise to Dixie Crosswords Restaurant was held on Saturday, March 19, with seven boats slipping into the Titusville Municipal Marina. Those arriving by boat were Bob Wiley on Judith III, with member/guests Cherie & Robert Baird, Don & Joanne Theriault on Impulse, David & Gail Cordial (with dog, Annie) on Mrs. C, Kevin & Louise Walters, with guest Loni, on Godspeed, John & Lynda Geraci on Avventura, and Joe & Karen Coleman on Alibi. Those arriving by car were Pat O'Brien & Clay Bernichon with their guests, Sam & Nancy Marsanopoli, Diane & Gil Hadden, Adam Hadden & Alissa. Also arriving by car were Chip & Louise Worster, Page & Claudia Proffitt, Ross Herbert, Nancy & Dave Keane, and John & Loretta Schnitzius. A great meal was enjoyed by all with plenty of delicious hush puppies. A large group of boaters stayed for breakfast on Sunday morning. They reported that they had plenty of wind coming home and it was a wild sail all the way back. 7 Samsons Island Cleanup Joe Coleman The latest Samsons Island Clean-up event, on March 12, was another great success. We had fourteen members participating in what was a very productive and rewarding day. It was good to see that the work that we had completed last fall stood the test of time and looked just as good as it did when we left. Our mission on this venture was to cut back more brush and plant a butterfly garden. An additional task was to try and remove a fallen tree which was intruding into the cut from the Grand Canal to the Banana River on the south side of the island. Once the area was cleared and the new plants were in the ground, John Geraci, Chip Worster, Lori (our work coordinator from the City) and I went out on the pontoon boat armed with cutters, saws and a ladder (that s right, a ladder on a boat). Although we were unable to remove the entire tree, we were able to cut it back enough so power boats could go under it. The rest of the group was busy raking up pine needles and moving them to our area for ground cover. By the time we left, butterflies were already enjoying the new garden. After a well-deserved lunch, provided by the city, we loaded up and left. Arriving by city boat were Jennifer, Daniel, Amanda and Adam Clendinen, Robert and Cherie Baird, Don Theriault, Claude Auger, and Chip Worster. Arriving with me on Alibi were Dave and Nancy Keane, John Geraci, and Dave Cordial. POSTER CONTEST At left is one of the suggested ECSA publicity posters. We have received several photographs and even photograph websites for pictures of sailboats. Although this was appreciated, we are looking more for designs for the poster. Your suggestion does not have to be a finished product, so any idea is greatly appreciated. April is the last month to submit your suggestions. Please your ideas to our Commodore John Geraci avventura@cfl.rr.com, or bring them to our next meeting on April 13. We look forward to your ideas and suggestions. Page 7

Secretary s Report (continued) Nancy Keane (Continued from page 4) Sunday morning, the cruisers enjoyed breakfast at the Cocoa Village Marina. Check for photographs on the website. Bob thanked everyone for attending. Loretta Schnitzius reported that the Dixie Crossroads cruise is scheduled for March 19. Dinner will be at 5 p.m. If you are coming by boat, call the Titusville Marina for a slip. Let the marina know if you are a Boat US member to receive a 10% discount. Transportation will be provided from the marina. Please contact Loretta Schnitzius if you need a ride or would like more information. The marina is within walking distance to the restaurant. She reminded members that there is a sign-up sheet on the table. Joe Coleman reported that the Cruise to Squid Lips is on April 2 and 3. April is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month. From 4-8 p.m. on April 2, Squid Lips will donate 5% of their food and beverage take to this worthy organization. Events of the day include getting together with cruising friends, eating at Squid Lips, face painting, to name a few. At 7 p.m., Commissioner Ferranti will read a proclamation about Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness. If Joe cannot create the blue light ribbons for the sailboats, light sticks will be given to those anchored just beyond the city docks and Squid Lips. Joe stated that there are over 200 boat clubs in the area and invitations went out to all of these clubs. We hope to have a huge turnout. Lynde Edwards reported on the 420 Launch at the Melbourne Yacht Club being held on Sunday, March 13. The fundraiser will begin at 10 a.m. The general public is invited to enjoy an afternoon out on the water. It will be a great day to build awareness about sailing and racing. Adult sailing classes begin March 17 th in the new 420 s. Children s sailing classes begin in the summer. See the Melbourne Yacht Club website for more information. Page Proffitt reported that Harvey Melfi s slip at the Melbourne Yacht Club is for rent for three or four months. Dick Tillman has a slip available just north of Mathers Bridge. CPR classes will be held at the Melbourne Yacht Club March 30 from 6-9 p.m. for $20. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: Karen Coleman reported that our next Samsons Island Adopt-a-Park work day is Saturday, March 12, at 9 a.m. Lunch is included. If you need a ride, arrive at the city boat dock by 9 a.m., at which time the pontoon will leave for the island. The 50:50 drawing was won by Erwin Kissenberth. Our program this evening is Cruising the Chesapeake. Finally, we would like to thank Lynda Geraci and Cherie Baird for providing refreshments. With there being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm.
