2 THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE Nancy Knobbs VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE Scott Kiesling History of our Organization At February s membership meeting the BOG announced that changes are being made to the ECSA bylaws. With the establishment of TidyHQ as a digital tool to manage memberships, it is necessary to update the bylaws so the verbiage regarding membership supports the updated process. The first step in making any changes is to become well acquainted with the existing terminology of the Articles of Incorporation of the ECSA, the bylaws. This was an interesting venture on my part. I ve read through the Articles before, but this time I REALLY read them, as in Googling the names of the men who drew up the original club constitution. How many of us have taken the time to do so, or truly know and understand the history of the club? It s kind of like Ancestry.com and searching through archives and information about folks you may have heard about but never knew. Take William Heisler for instance. I did not know he was Col William F. Heisler, US Air Force Retired. He was born in 1918 and passed away at the age of 93 in A thirty-year decorated veteran, he learned to sail in the northeast waters of Maryland, was very supportive of Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts, a member of Eau Gallie Yacht Club and a sailor who cruised the Bahamas, and canal boats in England and Wales. He and the others with him, Robert Perry and Edwin Kolb, put a lot of work into formulating and compiling the Articles of Incorporation that make up what ECSA has become today. What a legacy -- interesting and pretty darn impressive if you ask me! The BOG is working diligently to be sure the changes made to the bylaws will read clearly and with transparency. Please look for the notice of changes in our next Foot, Tack & Clew. Information will be provided at that time on when and how the changes are to be voted on by the membership. Per the bylaws, this is the way it s done. In the meantime, I encourage you to read through the Articles of Incorporation of the East Coast Sailing Association. Google some of the names and perhaps learn more about the history of our organization. Happy Cruising! Nancy The ultimate fix for a problematic diesel engine! Yes, I have fought, fixed, bled, reconditioned, prayed over, cursed, cried over, and finally surrendered to my little Yanmar 10-horse diesel that was possessed by the devil! I have had NASA engineers who have designed deep-space rocket engines, who have placed men on the moon, satellites around the earth, and rovers on Mars, but my engine still left them scratching their heads and running for a beer. I re-purposed my 500-pound diesel as my permanent anchor. Commonly referred to as the iron anchor, she loves her new purpose. She lies deep in the Indian River, home to the catfish that lives on the bottom and never sees daylight. It was a challenge to remove bucks to the crane operator on lunch break for a quickie. It was a joy to cut the fuel line, actually a celebration. Drain all the oils, all the fancy fix-it oils that I spent so much money on, with expectations based on all the fancy marketing promises to stop the pinging, smoking and tapping. Then it was the U-Haul to transport it, the 4-to-1 pulley system to lift it while she was still trying to kill me, somehow knowing I was trying to kill her -- straight out of a Rod Serling Twilight Zone show. Then, finally in the inflatable, every sailor from twenty miles around telling me it will never work (mostly engineers telling me how to do it), she was maneuvered to her final resting place. A quick shove and splash. Done, completed! She fought me til the last. I dove down to check it out. She was actually happy as an anchor. Holding my boat firm and true into the wind! Page 2

Both Jeanne and Jim grew up in Brevard County and fell in love at Cocoa High School in the 1960 s. With the Vietnam war raging and the race to the moon taking flight, this couple left their jobs as teachers and built a 32-ft Westsail. They named their boat Sabbatical and sailed on an adventure around the world from 1979 to Come meet and greet both Jeanne and Jim, and enjoy their voyage in an award-winning presentation. The Circumnavigation is also captured in full color print, with beautiful photography of the complete voyage, in book form from Amazon.com. It is a wonderful story of adventure, and of achieving the impossible. Welcome New Members! 5 Cruising News Sebastian Cruise and Concert March Page Proffitt Mark your calendars for another great ECSA Cruise. Join us by car or by boat for a great day at Sebastian Inlet State Park. We will have pavilion #1 on the south side of the inlet all day. This will be a Burn-It style event, so bring something you like to throw on the grill for yourself, and a side dish to share. Grills will be ready at 5:30 pm for cooking, giving us plenty of time to be ready for the concert. If coming by car, the cost is $4 for one person in the car and $8 for 2 or more in the car. If coming by boat, you will exit the intercoastal at green marker 65. Head to the east keeping south of the point before turning to the north. Dinghy in to the south side of the point and pull up on the beach. The concert will start at 7 p.m. at pavilion #3 with Remember When. Remember When is four singers and a music mixer, playing the oldies but goodies from the 1950 s to the 1970 s, with a slice of country and some Elvis. Featuring songs from an era when the Crooners ruled the entertainment world. Come join us for a jukebox Saturday night style concert. For more information, contact Page Proffitt at St. Patrick s Day Cruise March Tom and Mary Ann O Shea Arrive early by boat or car and enjoy the parade, which begins at 11 a.m. in downtown Melbourne on Saturday, then enjoy the zany Irish festivities at Meg O'Malley's. Anchor off Front Street Park and dinghy into Melbourne Harbor, or call Melbourne Harbor Marina for reservations ( ). If you anchor out, Melbourne Yacht Club will allow you to use their dinghy docks; call Tom for the gate code. ECSA activities will begin at 5 p.m. in The Mansion downstairs Courtyard, just a short walk from MYC or from downtown Front Street. There is lots of parking available at the Mansion but remember you get extra points for coming by boat. Enjoy Blarney, Irish humor, Irish music and a get-toknow-st. Patrick (even if you re not Irish) contest, complete with prizes and if we re lucky, a visit by ECSA s very own Leprechaun. Wear your GREEN and join us for some magical fun. The Mansion ( or ) has good food at reasonable prices, including sandwiches, burgers and entrees, and, most of all, a great variety of beer and wines. Stick around or come back to join us Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. for a potluck breakfast at Front Street Park. Sign up at the general meeting or on TidyHQ, or call Tom O Shea, or , so we have a good reservation number for the Mansion. Child Abuse Awareness Cruise and Melbourne Air Show April 1-2 Joe and Karen Coleman What better way to start April than by attending the Melbourne Air Show via water and then heading up to Squid Lips for dinner to support the start of Child Abuse Awareness Month. (Continued on page 6) Page 5

6 Child Abuse / Air Show Cruise Continued from page 5 The Melbourne Air & Space Show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 1st & 2nd. The official event is held at Melbourne International Airport, but we expect to have an opportunity to view some highflying aircraft from an anchorage in the Indian River, roughly midway between the Eau Gallie and Melbourne causeways, in line with the airport runway. The show schedule will be published 7 to 10 days before the event on their website. April is Child Abuse Awareness month and the ECSA and Squid Lips team up with the Child Abuse Prevention Task Force to promote awareness. Squid Lips donates 5% of revenue from food sales between 5 and 8 p.m. to CAPTF. The ECSA attempts to get as many boats as possible to attend, drawing attention to the cause. This is a wonderful cruise for children also, as there are several activities on the beach for them. In the past we have tried to get a large table to accommodate our group, but we have been asked to refrain from doing that this year as it blocks tables and it is hard to serve everyone at the same time. Instead, grab a few friends and a table and enjoy the great food. Karen and I will be taking attendance, so if we don t see you, please look for us. Miami Boat Show Review Page Proffitt Another Miami Boat Show Bus Trip was enjoyed by all. The last seat on the bus was filled the night before we left. With food and drinks and a movie, time passed quickly, and before we knew it, we were at the main entrance to the boat show. The show was good, with lots to look at. Too many go-fast power boats for my liking though. After the main show, we headed over to the Sail show at Miami s Bayside Marina. As always, there were lots of vendors and boats to explore. As the afternoon came to a close, most of us found a restaurant for dinner. The bus picked us up around 7 p.m. for the ride back to Melbourne. Captain Ron was again our movie for the ride home. I have to say that even though we have seen it many times, I always get something out of it. Captain Ron instructed us on everything from engine repair to high-speed docking (which I have to try next time coming into a marina). If you have not done the Boat Show Bus Trip, you will have to come along next year! buyer when received. Past Commodore, Page Proffitt: Reported that the weather and turnout for the Frostbite Cruise on January were both very good. Also reported on the upcoming cruise to Sebastian Inlet on March 11 pavilion is reserved, everyone is requested to bring a side dish, and the music starts at 7 p.m. Cruising Fleet Captain, Lynda Geraci: Presented information about the 25 upcoming club cruises this year, emphasizing that there is no excuse not to get out on the water. Joanne Theriault added that she and Don plan to cruise this coming Friday through Sunday to Marker 21 and invited anyone in the club to join them. Membership, Jennifer Clendinen: Solicited the help of any interested boaters for a Boy Scout sailing event on April 8. Brian Dutra from the Banana River Power Squadron described plans for the Satellite Beach Boat Parade December 16, and mentioned that they are looking to extend the route further south this year. Old business: Bob Wiley announced that the cutoff for inclusion in the directory is February 15. New Business: SECRETARY S REPORT Continued from page 4 Ross Herbert announced plans for cruising in his boat to Rhode Island, New York, and Chesapeake Bay area, in the time frame of June through October. Asking if anyone is interested in crewing for all or part of this journey. Page Proffitt notified the club that the J-24 Midwinter races are taking place this upcoming weekend (Feb ) and that cruisers should watch for the increased boat traffic in the vicinity of Dragon Point. The 50/50 drawing went to Joanne Theriault, winning $33. Refreshment break while we set up for our program speaker. Meeting adjourned: 7:47 p.m. Gerard Meunier, Past Commander of the Cocoa Beach Sail and Power Squadron, spoke about cruising and safety, as well as cruising the Great Loop around the eastern United States. Respectfully Submitted, John Boyd, Secretary Page 6
