2 THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE Addictions Joe Coleman It is terrible when you must admit to having an addiction. Addictions come in many forms and most of us in the ECSA have one in common: sailing, unable to resist the lure of the water and wind-filled sails, letting all our cares fly away with the breeze. Now I think that is a good addiction, but I am talking about a bad one. I dread the day - and I fear it may come - when I have to stand up in front of a group and say, My name is Joe and I am addicted to ebay. Like most bad things, it didn t seem that unacceptable at first. It all started very innocently when I was looking for some new golf clubs that I really didn t need. First I went to a discount golf shop, but was surprised that their prices weren t that low. I just couldn t justify spending that kind of money on a sport I only played occasionally. But the notion had gotten into my head, and I couldn t stop thinking about them. Now most people get addictions from the people they hang around with. They are either co-dependent or enablers. Now I m not calling Karen either one, I m just saying that she was the one who suggested ebay. Try it, you will like it. Let me show you how and you can pay with my PayPal. It all sounded so easy and harmless at the time - as most bad things do. So I pulled up ebay and starting looking. The prices were lower than at the store but still a bit more than I wanted to pay. Then Karen suggested that I make a low bid and see if they would accept it. How does that work? I asked, and she quickly showed me the mechanics of bidding. That was my downfall. I placed my first bid - a low-ball - and got a wonderful message stating that I was the highest bidder and wishing me good luck. With a smile on my face, I sat back and pictured myself playing the best golf ever with my new clubs. Then I came down off that high quickly, like a crack addict going to rehab. A notice came that someone had outbid me for the clubs and I was encouraged to try again. So try I did. Bid after bid, high after low, it was like being on a roller coaster. I wasn t sure how much more of this I could take. Then the bidding was over and I was not the highest bidder. Back to ebay I went looking for another set of clubs and I started the whole process all over again. Bid after bid, rejection after rejection, I just kept going. After several more attempts, I realized that if I waited until the last few seconds before the bidding closed and put my bid (Continued on page 6) VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE Courage Donna Oyer When I googled the word courage, these are the definitions that were associated with the word courage. The ability to do something that frightens one. Strength in the face of pain or grief. The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc. Bravery; daring; heart; heroism, valor, courageousness. Physical courage is courage in the face of physical pain and hardship. Without question and the obvious example of courage are our troops many miles from home, risking their lives to protect our country. In addition, looking into the face of danger daily are our local police and fire fighters. Each and every single day, these brave beings don their uniforms and risk their own lives facing the unknown, to keep each one of us safe. Truly courageous. Courage takes on many forms. On Saturday I experienced a different example of courage. Jim and I arrived later than we had anticipated at the dock, to head south to the ECSA St. Patty s Day celebration in Melbourne. Before we left the dock we saw Tom and Mary Ann O Shea getting their boat ready. Before we could lend them a hand backing out of their slip, they were well on their way. We saw the stern of Southern Comfort, just as she passed through Mather s Bridge. Jim and I left the dock about 30 minutes later. The wind had picked up, and was with some 20+ gusts out of the SSE. About a half of a mile south of Eau Gallie Cswy, we saw a boat with sails full tacking to port and then to starboard. Healing to port and then to starboard, gliding across the ICW just as Dorothy Hamill glides across the ice. My heart filled with joy as I watched. You see, the courageous couple at the helm of their boat, Southern Comfort, was Tom and Mary Ann O Shea. Mary Ann was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and is undergoing chemotherapy. Talk about courageous! Not just the mere fact that Tom and Mary Ann face an unknown, but the fact that in the face of cancer, they choose to live their lives. Receiving chemo treatments and just trying to maintain a normal day is an accomplishment. But there they were enjoying their boat, enjoying their sail, and most importantly enjoying each other. After arriving at the anchorage, Tom on the bow dropping the anchor while Mary Ann stood watch at the (Continued on page 6) Page 2

5 Upcoming Cruises & Events Annual Child Abuse Prevention Month Cruise April 6-7, 2013 Joe and Karen Coleman The Child Abuse Prevention Task Force kicks off Child Abuse Prevention month at Squid Lips in Eau Gallie. The ECSA has co-hosted this event since its inception. Squid Lips will donate 5% of food sales to the Task Force between the hours of 5PM and 8PM. (Sorry, nothing for alcohol sales.) Karen and I will be hosting the event for the ECSA and will have blue pennants for each boat that arrives. Fly these anywhere you like on your boat to show your support. Let s make this the best year ever with lots of boats flying pennants. Tall Ship Event May 7-12, 2013 In recognition of Florida's 500 th Anniversary, there will be a Tall Ship Event at Port Canaveral. The Nao Victoria Galleon, a full replica of 16 th century era ships that were used to discover Florida, will be on exhibit in the port and open for public tours. Monitor the news outlets for details. Titusville Barbeque Cruise April 20-21, 2013 Jim and Shoko Houle Our annual outing to the Titusville Municipal Marina will be on Saturday, April 20 and 21. There will be a BBQ on Saturday at 5:30 PM. We will provide the breakfast on Sunday at 8:00 AM at the Titusville Yacht Club (TYC) which is a short walk from the Marina to the Clubhouse. For the BBQ, bring your own favorite main courses to throw on the grill and a side dish to share. The Marina grill is fairly large but a couple of portable grills would be helpful. We will provide ice, charcoal, and starter for the BBQ. For those coming by boat, the Marina has both docks and mooring balls. The mooring balls are outside the harbor. The slips at the dock, with a Boat US membership card, rent for $1.20 per ft. per day. If you stay for two nights at their standard rate of $1.60 per ft. per night they will give you one night free. Also, you can anchor out at $15 per day and dinghy in. The Marina phone number is Call for reservations and tell the dockmaster, Donnie Post, that you are a member of ECSA. 6 COMMODORE S THOUGHTS (Continued from page 2) in then, other people would not have enough time to outbid me. So like a sailor s wife, watching the horizon waiting for her husband to return from sea, I sat in front of the computer, counting down the seconds before I made my bid. With my finger on the Confirm Bid button I waited until the last five seconds and then placed my bid. At last, I had won the bidding war, I had a new set of clubs at a price I was willing to pay, and I figured out how to beat the ebay bidding system. If, and I say if, I could have stopped there, this would be a great story. But I knew how to use system now and I had to try it out again. If my system worked so well on golf clubs, how about golf balls? Bingo, we have another winner! This was so easy that I went on to purchase a chipping wedge and sand wedge for me and I even got one for my golfing granddaughter. Now you are probably asking yourself, What does this sad story of addiction have to do with sailing? EBay has sailing items as well as golf items! I needed some teak veneer, ebay had it, I knew the system, and in two short days it was delivered to our front door. The bidding for a Loos tension gauge for the rigging was so easy I laughed until it was delivered three days later. I even got Jim and Donna Oyer to get in on the action; they bought some blocks for their boat for less than half price. There are so many things I could get for Alibi! However, with most serious addictions, the addict does not realize the harm that he causes to the people around him and has to make a decision to either stop the addictive behavior or risk further damage. Karen considered putting parental control on my computer to try and stop me. My grandchildren even showed me pictures of homeless people living in the woods because they lost all their money after bidding on ebay. All the signs of addiction were there and I had to man up and just say No. Oh, sorry! I have to run, time is running out on.. Joe Coleman helm. Then they had to get their dinghy into the choppy water, lower their motor, and take a long, wet, choppy ride into Melbourne Harbor. After tying up their dinghy, it was a lengthy walk to the restaurant for Mary Ann. Mary Ann O'Shea has handled her diagnosis with courage and grace. On Mary Ann s blog she states, I continue to be uplifted by your kind words. No, Mary Ann, we are uplifted by your strength, your positive attitude, and yes, your courage. We continue to keep Tom and Mary Ann O Shea in our thoughts and prayers. Happy Sails to You, Donna VICE COMMODORE S VIEW (Continued from page 2) Be sure to take advantage of our ECSA Group Coop # GA81299B when joining or renewing your BOAT US membership. Page 6

7 Cruise Review St. Patrick s Day Cruise Dave and Nancy Keane St. Paddy blessed the sailors and all attendees with wonderful weather and sunshine for the annual ECSA cruise to Melbourne Harbor. Festivities started at 1100 with the parade where everyone was "Irish" from the Ancient Order of Lebanese Veterans to the Audi and Mercedes dealerships. After the parade, a few of us took in some refreshments, listened to some Irish music, pipers and displays of Irish dancing at "Meg's". After all boats were safely anchored and docked and cars parked, we all (40 of us total) met at "The Mansion" for dinner. It was a beautiful evening and we were served dinner al fresco on the rooftop terrace overlooking the river and a bird's eye view of the massive construction project on New Haven Ave. Everybody raved about the food and were quite happy sampling the menu of over 65 draught beers. After dinner, a few of us ventured back downtown; we did not line up with the 100 or so people waiting to get in outside Meg's. But there was plenty of other action and we found relief in some non-irish entertainment at the Main Street Pup. Sunday morning, those left standing met for breakfast at Meg's. Among this "honor roll" were Tom and Mary Ann O'Shea, Bob Wiley, Brad and Angie Stowers, Nancy and Dave Keane and Terry Thompson. Most left for the cruise home on another beautiful day, but Brad, Angie and Dave prolonged the day by joining MYC boats for the afternoon Rum Race. Many thanks to our "official" photographers Bob Wiley, Ross Herbert and Brad Stowers who captured the spirit of the weekend. The photos are in the gallery at the ECSA website. We had a great turnout of 7 boats for the weekend. First to arrive on Friday evening were Brad and Angie Stowers on "Island Rose". Following on Saturday were Bob Wiley on "Judith III", Jim and Donna Oyer on "Believe", Chip and Louise Worster on "Chip- Ahoy", Joe and Karen Coleman on "Alibi", John Boyd and Marie Carney on "Aspire", Tom and Mary Ann O'Shea on "Southern Comfort" and Dean and Patti White with guest Janette White on "Jazz". "Jazz" had the least distance to travel as they are docked at MYC but they did go out for a day sail over the weekend. Arriving by car: John and Lynda Geraci, Ross Herbert, Bob and Adrianne Goldstein, Clay and Patty Showen, John and Jan Scholtz, Tom and Marjorie McIllree, Greg and Joanne Riska, Burt and Christal Pareja, Al and Joyce Harmon, Jesse and Carmen Camp, Nat and Sonja Villaire, and Dave and Nancy Keane with guest Terry Thompson.
