2 THOUGHTS FROM YOUR COMMODORE Nancy Knobbs VIEW FROM THE VICE COMMODORE Diana Seamans To quote Bob Dylan, The times they are a changin I d like to announce a change on the ECSA Board of Governors. Vice Commodore, Scott Kiesling, has made the difficult decision to step down from his post on the BOG as he has taken on a new job. Scott plans to remain active in the club. He and Ellie are hosting a cruise this August so watch for upcoming details. Thank you, Scott, for your work with the BOG and best wishes for successful transition to the new job. ECSA s newly appointed Vice Commodore is Diana Seamans (Cox). The BOG unanimously agreed to offer the position to Diana, as she has displayed a passion for sailing that truly exemplifies the spirit of ECSA. A hearty sailors welcome to Diana! As posted in last months FTC, there are several committee positions that do not have a volunteer chairperson. Diana is assuming the interim role as Lead volunteer to the following committees: Advertising, Publicity, and Programs. The BOG has decided to combine Advertising/Publicity into one as they pretty much go hand in hand. Note, we are doing well with advertisers and see no need for additional recruiting at this time. However, Publicity is ongoing and entails getting the word out about our club and the cruises we have or gatherings we arrange. Local newspapers, flyers in businesses where sailors frequent etc., this is what the position is all about and is one of the best ways to entice more sailors to join ECSA. The second volunteer position and probably the most important to the club is that of Programs. Good programs that are of great interest to our members is the best way to keep members informed and interested in attending the monthly membership meetings. Some effort is required on the part of the Lead Volunteer to line up informative, educational and/or inspiring talks or presentations for the monthly meetings. Both volunteer positions report to the Vice Commodore, who is there to assist if need be. If interested in either one or both of these positions, please contact Diana and let her know you are willing to help. And thank you in advance. Happy Sailing _/) Nancy First, I would like to thank those who have showed confidence in me by asking me to stand in as Vice Commodore of your association. I come from a lifetime of experience on the water. As a child, I grew up on Long Island, New York. My summers consisted of fishing and snorkeling for dinner. We had an aluminum Starcraft boat that could go at a swift speed enough to require us to hold on as we laughed at flying off our seats. I do believe that is when I first experienced the trials of alternative methods of movement of your boat. This first solution was to have your boyfriend wade through the water to get you back to the camper. Fortunately, I knew exactly where the sandbars were during low tide. As we got older my brother decided to purchase an old wooden cabin cruiser that dad and Bob diligently fiberglassed the holes in the bottom. Unbeknownst to them, the good job they did would render the boat unable to be listed as an antique. The scariest adventure on that boat was sitting on the top deck as a summer storm came upon us while dad expertly directed us to safety. I will never forget us listing from side to side; I thought we would die that day. It's funny that today, while rendering myself as rail meat for sailing races, I find that extreme heeling exciting. As life took me on a journey to upstate New York, my boating adventures took a back seat for a bit until I purchased an RV site on a small lake with a friend. I could enjoy canoeing with the kids during our brief summers there. In June of 2009, I moved to Florida to begin the rest of my boating journey. The place that life took me resembles where I grew up. The biggest difference is the causeways. There are few Causeways connecting the mainland where I grew up, Fire Island. The main transportation to the Island were ferries and private boats. Upon moving to Florida, I knew I had to get out on the water. So, I bought myself a kayak, and then another, and then two more. I joined a group and brought my kids and their friends on adventures. I became quickly aware of how many kids don't really experience where they live. So, I tried my hardest to give these kids alternatives to fun times. I made friends that also enjoyed this sport and we went to various places around Florida. My favorite is Blue Springs, the second is Haulover Canal, third Manatee Cove and on and on. Many times, during the last three years of owning our sailboat, I thought, I may prefer the simplicity of my kayaks. (Continued on page 4) Page 2

Three years ago, my Ray, my love, bought me a 1979, 27-foot Hunter sailboat as a surprise. He bought it from a friend who had bought it from another person that I knew the previous year. They cleaned it up and surprised me with it on a visit home between helping mom out. My dad was sick at the time and Ray s thought was that we could get him on the water just a bit more. Unknown to Ray, he had just bought the very sailboat that my dad did sail on several years prior with the original owner. Unfortunately, dad never did make it back on the boat, but I carry his spirit with me every time I sail. I recently purchased the Rayanna Dinghy. I had to get work done on our small engine that would make it easier to get to shore, not that I mind rowing. So, I decided to try it out near our boat that is in a slip at Marina Isles. All went well with putting air in the boat, getting the engine on, going out into the channel and coming back in. I decided I should have emptied the carburetor as I did not know how long it would be before using it again. Pull the cord and an easy start, great! Except I did not go anyplace and no, I do not have neutral on the small engine. HMMMM, what could it be. Much to my dismay the propeller fell off!! So, rowing it must be. Another experience with no power. I am beginning to think, I may have to get big paddles for the sailboat in anticipation of no wind and no engine. I did learn from a prior experience with another sailor that if this occurs you can rock the boat back and forth and the movement over the sails will make it move forward. Did you know that? We have had quite a history already being owners of Rayanna. Our rudder fell off, and this was my second experience trying to figure out an alternative propulsion of a vessel. Fortunately, we have an outboard on our boat. Ray could not have waded us back to shore. We have had to replace the electric, lost a jib in a hurricane and continue to chase leaks, which I think I have narrowed down to the hatches and shroud fittings. The list continues but nothing too serious that would stop me from enjoying sailing. I have found that our boat is my addiction. I long to visit her when I am home, and easily lose time once I am there. She is not fancy but I love her dearly. My family knows if I go to the boat first I will most likely be late to any event we need to get to. I enjoy the fellowship of other boaters and look forward to shared events with you all. 5 Cruising News WWWB Cruise August 5th & 6th David Lauginiger Come join us for the next Whichever Way the Wind Blows (WWWB) Cruise! Plan on sailing or driving to Grills for lunch on Saturday, August 5. Lunch will be between 12 Noon & 1pm, and afterwards we will decide where our next landfall will be based on, you guessed it... Whichever Way the Wind Blows! * If the wind is out of the South we sail/drive north to Cocoa Village for dinner at Ryan's. * If the wind is out of the North we sail/drive to Eau Galle for dinner at Squid Lips. * In the event of an East or West wind, it will be a coin toss (literally) on which direction we go. * In the case of no wind at all, we will have a dinghy/ kayak/paddleboard raft up at Pinedaville for cocktails with the Commodore. See you then! Titusville Marina Survival Planning Cruise August Scott and Ellie Kiesling The Titusville Marina Cruise is back! It is a beautiful full - service marina with parks on both sides; one with a splash area and the other a dog park. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants within walking distance. It is an estimated 5-hour cruise from Satellite Beach, or 3 hours from Cocoa Village, at 6 knots. Once you arrive there is an air-conditioned captain s lounge and an outdoor covered, screened in patio. We will have an ECSA Cookout at 5PM at the marina picnic area with covered tables, grill, seating and a great view of the harbor. Scott and I will have a brief display of our Bug Out bag (ie; starting a fire without a match, desalinating water) and help with your Bug Out boat list. Come by car or boat, there is lots of parking. There will be coffee and a continental breakfast in the Captain s Lounge Sunday morning to mid morning. Scott and I will be staying both Friday and Saturday nights, come join us. (Titusville Marina detail/photo will be ed as cruise date draws nearer.) Ellie will be available at the membership meetings for more info or call Ellie at Labor Day Ft. Pierce Cruise September 1-4 Jesse & Carmen Camp Some basic information for the upcoming Labor Day Cruise to Ft. Pierce. We will be at the Harbortown Marina in Ft. Pierce from Friday, September1 st through Monday the 4 th. Harbortown Marina has a restaurant, a pool, a large pavilion and easy access to the ocean via inlet. We will have two vehicles for transportation to the Farmer s Market Saturday morning, breakfast Sunday morning, as well as, for dinner. Harbortown does not allow to make reservations more than one and a half months prior to cruise dates, which means that you should start calling them after July 15 th for your reservations. Harbortown Marina Ft Pierce (Sat Sept 2, Sun Sept 3, optional for Fri) Summer Sailstice Cruise Review Nancy Knobbs and David Lauginiger This year s June Summer Sailstice Cruise was held once again at Grills Riverside near Pineda causeway. The wind was out of the southeast as Cool Change rounded Dragon Point just before noon on Saturday, June 24th. With not enough breeze for the mainsail, we motor sailed under jib only, up the Indian River toward Pineda. We were almost to the bridge when the engine high temp alarm sounded. Shutting down the engine, we crawled along under sail through the bridge and toward the windward shore, dropping the anchor in Pinedaville, to assess the situation. After inspecting the raw water strainer, and a quick dip in the water for a thru-hull check, we surmised that a faulty raw water pump was the likely culprit. Sure enough, we found it needed a new impeller and, after 30 minutes of work, the new part was installed (thank goodness for backups), and we were on our way to Grills and the Summer Sailstice celebration. A total of eight ECSA boats were anchored off Grills: Southern Comfort, Impulse, Miss Hanna, Pisces, Oriyo, Cool Change, Windependence, and Bull Rush (MYC). Grills set up a tent with tables and chairs for our hearty group of sailors. Father Todd Schmidtetter performed the Blessing of the Fleet to all who were present. He had been given a list of all ECSA boats from our direc- (Continued on page 6) Page 5
