The continuing series of outstanding speakers for the general meeting and social time continues with yet another excellent speaker. This month Joan has a pair of speakers from the Northwest Maritime Center and the Wooden Boat Foundation, this will surely be informative and entertaining. The second cruise of the year, the Tax Relief Cruise will be at Bell Harbor marina on April If you are not at the cruise, come down to the water to celebrate the escape of Tom and Jeanne, as they host their dock lines cutting to get ready for the adventure they have worked so long and hard to make a reality. I m sure we will be able to follow them via the internet. Soon, it will be Spring Regatta weekend, and then the Mid Sound Summer Social will be right behind that. Keep up on everything on the TTPYC web page. The rest of the club business is running along in good hands. Our budgets and money are in the watchful hands of Caroline, and other trustees are contributing time to advertisement, posters, shirts and things in print. All the hard work, and efforts will soon be enjoyed with the events, sailing, racing and gatherings. See you on the water. David Garman

3 CRUISE CORNER Cruise Co-Chair Malcome & Katie Grothe 2011 Blake Island Cruise It was the best trip up to Blake Island in recent memory, departed Des Moines around noon, arrived in the early afternoon. No rain, wind, just a comfortable motor. Cruisers hiked the island in the afternoon, and gathered on the dock for appetizers and refreshments in the evening. After lunch, cruisers gathered for the games: Beer Cap Puzzle-figuring out what that picture was and sounding out the phrase; and Name that Kazoo Tune. Each cruiser was given 10 beer caps and had to solve the puzzles. There were over 200 beercaps distributed, so determining who correctly figured out the puzzles was a bit of a challenge. In the adult category-there was a 3-way tie-jean, Rose and Doug all answered 7 correctly. In a playoff, Jean solved two extra bottle caps before Rose and Doug. In the young adult category, CJ correctly solved 9 puzzle caps. In the youth category, Bryson with assist from Marissa correctly solved 9 puzzle caps. The magnifier glass and flashlight also came in handy to make out the details of the pictures on the caps. Kazoos were passed out, and cruisers warmed up by playing tunes-mainly patriotic for us to name that song. After that warm up, cruisers were challenged to play a song only they could hear on an IPOD. Kareoke Kazoo! Winners in the adult category-debra and Shelley tied playing Mack the Knife and Light My Fire, respectively. In the young adult category, Tricia, Emma and Mitch played Banana Pancakes, Chain of Fools and Satisfaction, respectively. Paul won the youth category with Row, Row Your Boat. In preparation for the competition, Dean Gene Kelly did his rendition of Singing in the Rain complete with a splash in a puddle! The tabletop displays were a Shellman and Peep Massacre, courtesy of Bryson and the Conti crew-led by Heather and Sarah. We dodged the rain, and just as we were sitting down for dinner, the sun broke on the West Seattle shoreline, giving it a golden glow. The potluck dishes were excellent as was the crab. Special thanks to Johnny s Seafood for the fresh, cracked crab. We had 14 boats attending Allez, Andromeda, Blue Moon, Brigadoon, Cayuse and crew, Cheers, Chinook and crew of 8, Hobbes, Mapril June, Rhumb Runner, Sloe Tango, Silver Breeze, Sweet Surrender, and Too Fat to Fly. Junior sailors included Heather, Sarah, Shayda, CJ, Mitra, Kelly, Trish, and Mitch on Chinook, Paul and Lily on Blue Moon, Marissa, Bryson and Jocelyn on Cayuse and Emma on Sweet Surrender. Doggie boaters aboard-sloe Tango had Chloe, Mapril June had Samantha, Andromeda had Tunie and Brigadoon had Murphy and Molly. Special thanks to all who played the games, helped set up and clean up. You really make the cruises a success! Caroline McShane

We hope to see you there. Buzz and Tish Greenman Prime Meridian Minto Mingle June Note: This date has changed from our original 2011 calendar... Get Ready!!!!!!!. June Dockton Docks park. Minto sailing starts at 1:00 Saturday and finals at 10:00 Sunday. Pot luck Saturday night. If anyone has any other ideas to make this year's Minto Mingle different, please let me know. We need something new. Having run this event more than a dozen times I'm just out of ideas. If you have any ideas, questions or additions just me at shepherds2r@gmail.com or call We have not been to a cruise in more than a year, so it will be good to get back "into the fold". Ron Moblo

5 Gig Harbor Cruise June 4-5 I just got word about the "Gig Harbor Boat shop" restoration and grand opening June 4th 10:00 to 5:00. The Gig Harbor Boat shop (originally known as Eddon boat co.) has just been restored to it's original working state and is being operated as a public park and non- profit educational charity. It has been a well known landmark in the harbor for over 90 years and a place that many of us hauled our boats out and painted the bottoms, back in the days when you could actually do your own work. It is recognizable from a distance by the distinct white wash barn color and red roof. It is an operational boat shop that is currently restoring Thunderbird hull #2 which was originally built in this very shop in They are also restoring two other historical boats as well. A fine museum and gift shop are also are in the building. The projects are well displayed and you can walk around them. It promises to be a beehive of activity and a fun thing to do. Free tours and open house will be offered all day June 4th and in celebration of the new dock and pier at the boatshop. They are going to sponsor a "Eddon boat small craft " gathering to honor all the small boats the shop designed and built. That includes the famous Eddon Minto, sailing/ rowing two man wherry (16 ')and the Eddon Gig (12'). There is a documented claim by Ed Hoppen himself that one of his rowing wherry"s could go from his boat yard to the boat launch across the harbor in 13 strokes. This myth will be tried and or busted by a Minto and a wherry at 1:00 on Saturday. Come and see the spectacle and everyone in invited to bring their own Minto or Wherry to see if it can be done. A contest to be sure and a prize to the winner. Also a Minto/ wherry sailing race will be held Saturday at 2:30. Other points of interest will be the annual parade starting at 10:00 Saturday and the open house for the newly completed Historical Museum which has a very nice display of Thunderbird #1, and early photos of Gig Harbor. All 3 venues are within one block of each other located in the Southwest corner of Gig Harbor (the Shorline restaurant end). The plan is to raft up deep into the harbor (Shorline restaurant end). There are many ways to reach the shore by dinghy close by so you can watch the parade. Bring your Mintos and join in the festivities. Rowing and sailing activities will be centered around the new boatyard dock. Be advised there is no fuel dock in Gig Harbor ( a very sore subject) and the big QFC grocery just closed in town last month, so the only Grocery store (small) in Gig Harbor downtown is across the street from the Shorline restuarant. Ron Moblo

6 HISTORIAN Rose Marie Edmiston, Club Historian Again, please send Rose any photos for the clubs archive. And I want to give A BIG SHOUT OUT for the McSHANES for another fun and innovative CRAB FEED weekend! Orv and Rose RACE FLEET CORNER SHELLEY CONTI Race Fleet Captain GORDON KELLS-MURPHY Assistant Race Fleet Captain It is supposed to be spring, but I hope you all have bailing buckets for your boats! As they said on the news, March is going out like a lion, as well as coming in like one. Thursday night races start in one week, and looking at the forecast, it will start out wet. So shake out those sails, at least they will get a good washing to take out all that winter accumulation of dust and mold. On March 16th we had our annual Race Fleet Meeting. It was a dinner meeting held at Des Moines Creek Restaurant. We had a small turnout this year, with an informal meeting and a trophy presentation. We decided to not have plaques for trophies this year, as everyone said that they had no place to put them anymore. This year we will have beer mugs to go with your wine glasses from the past couple of years. We also talked about the windjammer series, as we had trouble scheduling it around the Southern Sound Series. We decided to talk to CYCT to see if we wanted to combine races with them and hopefully have a larger turnout for both clubs. I have written a proposal to them, which they are taking to their committee to consider. We still have most of a year to iron this out, but I figured we need to get started on it now. Spring Regatta is at the end of this month. We will have the SJ 21 fleet join us again this year. I hope that you will be able to come out as well. Hopefully, the weather will be better. The Registration Forms and Flyers are attached with the Barnacle. That is all I can think of for now, so I ll see you Thursday the 7th and the following Thursdays for the Spring Series and please mark down April 30th and May 1st in you calendar for the 2011 Spring Regatta. For more information and constant updates please check our web site at Shelley Conti

7 Committee Reports MID SOUND SUMMER SOCIAL DEBRA VALPEY, CHAIR It is time to start saving the dates to our 6th Annual MidSound Summer Social. To help you remember, we are sending you a flyer to print and add to your refrigerator art. (It is attached to this Barnacle ) Print as many as you like- for they would be great to hand out to fellow mariners- or take it to your local shops and ask for donations that can be used in the six weekly drawings.- Our next meeting is April 5 at the Marina Office. Please join us! BOATS FOR BEDS AUCTION NIGHT DINNER TOM HUBBARD & KRISTIE BRAME, CO-CHAIRS Hospitality House held its annual Spring Fling and Boats for Beds Auction on the evening of March 5th. With the help of Debra Valpey and Kristie Brame at the microphone, every boat seat was sold on the TTPYC's eleven participating boats! Our club had a great turn out of participating Captains and Admirals-- Kristie & Don Brame, Shelley Conti, Tom & Kersten Hubbard, Joan Marie, Tom & Jean Spohn, Jerry Stephenson & Jane Montague, and Ray & Debra Valpey. Our club raised a total of $5,675 that evening. This amount is $2,000 more than last year's event and very close to our committee's goal of $6,000! One of you reading this can help us reach that goal by volunteering your sailboat! TTPYC has been asked by Hospitality House if we could add one more sailboat to the event. They have several people who would like to race with us and are willing to donate ($$) to Hospitality House. If you need another reason to get out on your boat, this is it! The race will be held from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm on June 25th. The event coordinators promise an afternoon of sun, fun, socializing with new friends, great food, and relaxed racing (same as Mid-Sound Summer Social). Please give Tom a call at to join us. If you need another reason to join us, the amount your boat raises for this event is tax deductible (for the cash donor, not the captain). We would also like to thank the other 2011 Boats for Beds' Captains twho couldn't attend the auction dinner: Dean Conti, Laura & Robert Cruise, Buzz & Tish Greenman, Tim & Caroline McShane, and Pat and Sue Waters. If you would like to offer an hour and a half of your time, we are looking for a person to toot a horn off the fishing pier to start the race. This highly regarded position would look great on any resumé! MEMBERSHIP DOUG AND SHARON ANDREWS Co-Chairs Remember word of mouth is the best advertising. As you talk with other boaters, share information about our club (The MSSS flyers will be great for this!) and invite them to visit our website for up to the minute information. Our website is a great tool for keeping current with what is going on in Des Moines and it encourages new members. If you need extra calendar cards, just let us know.

8 Special Request Jerry Stephenson I have been asked to request the donation of sound equipment components for the club. We often find ourselves in need of a sound system at various club events. I could give many examples but don t think I need to. We aren t looking for big expensive equipment but rather something small and efficient so it can be taken to meetings and events like MSSS, etc. Doug Andrews has offered an amplifier (single channel, non- stereo amp) with mike as a starter but we need at least speakers (4, 8 or 16 ohm) to complete this very basic system. If you can help, please contact me at usmc_js@msn.com. Thanks!
