TheBarnacle Dates to Remember December 7 Winter Vashon Race 10 General Membership /Holiday Party January, Duwamish Head Race Watch for a new club calendar soon! Commodore s Corner Katherine Harang It s hard to believe it s December already! I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know we had much to be thankful for: good friends, close family, and steady jobs which allow us to own and race a boat. Earlier in November, as part of my duties as Commodore, I attended the Recreational Boating Association of Washington s annual meeting and was impressed by all the behind the scenes work they do to promote recreational boating in the state. I encourage TTPYC members to check out the website and read up on proposed changes in laws regarding waste discharge, boating while intoxicated, and gas taxes. Another issue addressed at the RBAW meeting was the aging boating population and decline in recreational boating in general. We need to get more people out on the water and involved in boating, so please invite friends and family out and encourage boating at all levels. With that in mind, our next social meeting will be on December 10 th at Arturo s Mexican Restaurant in Des Moines. Please bring your crew and/or any friends interested in sailing to enjoy the presentation by guest speaker Wendy Hinman, who will share her account of a seven year cruising adventure. Hope to see you there! Happy Holidays, Kathryn

Social Committee Joan Marie Van Gasken, Chair Please join us Tuesday, December 10th for our Holiday Social Meeting at Arturo's Mexican Restaurant in Des Moines! We will be starting around 6:00pm with no-host drinks and dinner. We will then have some nautical themed holiday songs and a presentation by local author and long term Pacific cruiser Wendy Hinman. Below is a brief introduction to Wendy and her story: Following their dreams on a tight budget, Wendy Hinman and Garth Wilcox cruised the Pacific on a 31-foot boat for seven years. They entrusted their lives to a boat that fit their budget better than Garth's large frame and discovered that teamwork and a sense of humor were more important than many so-called "necessities" as they faced many "character-building" opportunities. They made a long-anticipated visit to the island where Garth was shipwrecked as a teenager, only to find it had become a penal colony. An electronic catastrophe in the Solomon Islands left them without key navigation equipment. To haul and repair their boat on a remote atoll several thousand miles away, they had to devise a means for getting it out of the water. In Asia, they dodged typhoons and ships that threatened to turn their home into kindling. Finally they endured a grueling 49-day passage across the cold North Pacific from Japan to a post 9/11 America they hardly recognized. Wendy Hinman will share stories and photos from their 34,000-mile Pacific odyssey. Wendy Hinman is the author of Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven-Year Pacific Odyssey, a lighthearted tale about their seven year voyage. Books will be available for sale at the event. Hope to see you there!

Cruising News Debra and Ray Valpey, Chairs Debra and Ray are working on a fabulous cruising schedule for Watch for more information coming soon! Racing News Steve Sisson Race Fleet Captain Jim Thompson, Assistant Race Fleet Captain There is big racing news coming! Watch you for some pretty important updates. The race committee is working on incorporating the new standards and rules for racing and they are working on implementing a new automated, on-line way to register for races. As you can guess, this is a huge job of great importance. As soon as all the details are available, a special will be sent to all members with all the updates. Until then, keep an eye on the website for breaking news And don t forget the Duwamish Head Race is January 11! That gives you plenty of time to recover from New Year s! See you all there!

Membership News Doug and Sharon Andrews, Chairs Samantha, The Sea Dog, Assisting As you can see, Samantha is ready for the Holidays, especially New Years! So hears to our members! TTPYC members, we are still inviting you to share a little of yourself with the other members of the club. Each month the Barnacle is going to try and feature a member or two, starting with the members that have joined us most recently. With that said there are many older members, in the club longer, I am sure have some interesting tidbits about themselves or their boating life we all would like to hear. Some subjects to think about but certainly not limited to: *How did you get into boating, sail, power, other and where. *How many and what types of boats have you owned. *How did your boat or boats get their name. *What prompted you to join TTPYC. *Special trips you have taken or may recommend. *What is your favorite part of boating? *Helpful boating tip you could share. *Next on your horizon, trips, a new boat or just something to share. Please pick a subject or two to share with your fellow club members and send your short article, 2 or 3 paragraphs, to Kristie & Don, the Barnacle editors, K6352@aol.com and Doug & Sharon membership chairs, doug@highlandmistltd.com. Include the year you joined the club and a picture of you and your crew and or your boat would be fun to include in the article.

Market Place This is a new section for the benefit of our members. If you have something boat related to sell or trade, just send the info on to Kristie at K6352@aol.com and we will place it in this new section each month. Remember this is for members only! Andromeda for Sale After many adventures with Tom and Jean Spohn, Andromeda, a Schock 35 sailboat is for sale. She is a great raceboat with a PHRF of 72 and is easily managed. With rod rigging, fin keel, tiller, and lots of sails she sails well in our Pacific Northwest light winds. She also has hot and cold pressurized water, stove with oven, removable teak table, beautiful blue interior, stereo, and complete navigation equipment including fluxgate compass, GPS/Chartplotter, radar, AIS, cockpit cover, and autopilot which make for relaxed and comfortable cruising. She has had her engine serviced this year along with new bottom paint in October and a rig inspection. She is ready now to race or cruise to your favorite destination. Andromeda is lying on Lake Union at Bluewater yachts ( ) if you would like to inspect her. For more information including complete equipment list contact Tom Spohn at: tomspohn@centurylink.net or

EXTRAS This month we have an extra special treat! Guy Harper has written a great review of TTPYC s early days. Enjoy this wonderful history. And a special thank you to Guy for sharing this with us! In the process of recently moving to the Burien Town Square Condos, several interesting photos were uncovered that might be interesting to the new members. It involves the very early days of organizing the TTPYC. Back in 1969, KVI radio personality, Bob Hardwick, announced that a Dingy Derby race was to be held in the Lake Washington ship canal. The course was through the Chittenden Locks and back to the public launch area in Ballard with several watering holes (think free Rainier Beer) along the way. That was intriguing to a few of us Three Tree Pointers so we built a Styrofoam raft, put a bed on it, dressed in nightgowns and entered as the (non-descript...at that time) 3 TREE POINT YAUGHT CLUB!

Dave Puckett was the Skipper, I was on the banjo, Rick Anderson on the accordion, Will Wintermute on the tambourine and Bob Cole on the gut bucket. We played and sang thru the locks and upon our return, were advised that we had won first place...which consisted of $50.00 in prize money and a month s supply of Dag s 19 cent hamburgers...well, they called them hamburgers! We never did collect on that portion of the prize... With the winnings, I drove to Olympia and registered the name, THREE TREE POINT YACHT CLUB. While that was all well and good, none of us had any money to purchase an actual club house and so we became a paper yacht club. Most of the fellows then had outboard boats...however, we made many trips to the San Juans and then later, all the way to Desolation Sound. At one time, we used colorful plastic place mats showing the San Juans Islands (think... Not to be used for Navigation ) in an effort to find our initial way around, however these mats did not cover the Canadian waters...so we actually had to purchase Coast Guard official charts at $1.75 per each!...also gas at that time was really expensive...at 34 cents per gallon!

We had fun scavenging for fish, oysters, crab, abalone and clams during the day...and then had potluck dinners on the dock where ever we eventually moored. In the evening, it was banjo and accordion music with many folks joining in on the songfest. One time at Ketron Island, we swung Dick Rhemke s raised main sail across the dock and showed Warren Miller s 16 MM sound ski films...which could be viewed from both sides of the nylon sail! Popcorn and beer made for really great entertainment and other boaters joined in from all the other docks. It became quite a party! I purchased the first Minto R300 dingy directly from the Seattle Boat Show...and then other members bought Mintos..until we had enough for the start of our own TTPYC Dingy Derby. I included a spinnaker on mine which proved to be challenging but a lot of fun. Tom Schacht and several TTPYC members organized Explorer Scout Post 950 in 1971 with a 6 meter called Lully II...that had won a Silver Medal in the 1936 Olympics held in Kiel Bay, Germany. EP 950 campaigned that boat for a period of time and many others thru the next ten years...instructing approximately 400 teenagers from the Highline

district, the intricacies of racing and cruising...even to travelling thru the San Juans...it was quite a program for kids! EP 950 even had possession and used Herman Goering s 52 foot Dutch "botter jacht", the GROOTE BEER... for three years and sailed it also to the San Juans and to the Gold Cup Races. For the 1981 Swiftsure Race, our Scout group entered the 2 tonner, 41 foot sloop HEATHER, that John Buchan had donated...and, as a great surprise to all, our teenagers took first place in that race! Yes, it s in the record books! During the ten year span, over $400, was raised by EP 950 thru boat donations and sales...all for the Chief Seattle Council. This is a really wonderful fun filled yacht club and the experiences derived from cruising and racing along with the companionship will be with each participating member for the rest of their years! So continue to dream more, learn more and do more and you also will have a sail bag full of wonderful and marvelous memories that you too can unfurl at a moments notice! Enjoy!
