The Barnacle September 2012 Three Tree Point Yacht Club is an affordable family boating club that promotes enjoyment, appreciation, and care of the waters of Puget Sound. TTPYC Calendar of Events 2012 September The Commodore's Corner (win a prize for reading your Barnacle! Details follow). 6 Fall Series Race 1 8 Commodore's Trophy Race 11 General Membership Meeting and Welcome Social Milton Tavern Sleep and Creep 22 Fall Series Race 2,3 October 6 Fall Series Race 4, 5 20 Change of Watch 27 Halloween Party November Greetings Dear Mariners!. to Autumn in the Northwest, with the gentle mist on your shoulders and welcoming waters that promise release and renewal. As we sail on Sloe Tango, I often think about our beginnings on our San Juan sailing has always been a joy. Please join us for our last scheduled club cruise; this one, The Sleep 'n Creep, is a long standing tradition. We will gather at Dockton the weekend of September 14 to 16. Dockton has something for everyone: walking trails, a gorgeous beach, blackberries to pick on the side of the road, and our community of boaters to share it all. Tom and Kirsten Hubbard will be our hosts and they always come with surprises and intrigue. Contact either of them if you have questions. See inside for a recap our our Poulsbo cruise which we co-sponsored with the P.B.S.P.S. Great fun! 3 Winter Race Series 1,2 4 Daylight Savings Time Ends 13 General Membership Meeting 17 Winter Series Race 3,4,5 The fall race season starts this week! And this coming weekend is the Commodore's Trophy Race. See inside for details. Have you seen our new brochures? Would you like some to place in your favorite "boating" haunts? Contact Tom Hubbard. And let Doug Andrews know if you need additional wallet sized calling cards. Remember, if giving out your calling card results in a new membership, you will win a cool prize at the C.O.W.

Our Annual meeting is coming up on September 11, at the Milton Tavern. See inside for Joan Marie's announcement. Contact me if you have any questions. This is where we nominate officers and trustees for next year's leadership. We have some candidates already (compliments of the work of the Nominating Team) and we welcome additional nominations at the meeting. We are also featuring brief bios of our candidates on this year's ballot; some candidates are relatively new to the club, so you can acquaint yourself with their vision for our club before deciding how to cast your vote. We will also be voting on a by-laws change. Watch your mail for details. And the Milton Tavern pizza is so sumptuous! Yum! At the October 20 (Save the date!) Change of Watch, I will be recognizing individuals who have served the club this past year. Please contact me (phone, snail mail or ) with ideas that you have for recognizing leadership and innovation among our club members who do not have formal positions. I have an "inspiration" award to pass on this year, as well as our perennial favorites, That Sinking Feeling and the Cruise Boat of the Year. Also, if your past commodore flag is looking frayed and sad, contact Kersten Hubbard about a replacement. We want to honor you for your service always. Till I see you again, on land or on sea. With Appreciation for all that you do, Debra Valpey, Your Commodore P.S. If you would like information about fuel tax refunds for marine use, see me at the General Meeting (I will have handouts) or contact me separately. Social Corner Joan Marie, Chair September 11, 6 PM- 9 PM Milton Tavern, 7320 Pacific Highway East, Milton, WA themiltontavern.com for the map! This is a monthly gathering to generate camaraderie, interaction with the community, education to name a few reasons, among our club members. This month we will discuss nominations for next year's officers and a change in by-laws.

Race Fleet Corner GORDON KELLS-MURPHY Race Fleet Captain STEVEN FOSS Assistant Race Fleet Captain The Fall Series will begin September 6 and continue September 8. It will conclude on October 6 with races 4 and 5. See the attached race form that comes with the Barnacle. Cruising Corner Ray Valpey, Chair Minto Mingle Cruise Report June 30-July Arabella s Landing Gig Harbor A pleasant surprise in the weather was enjoyed by all who attended this year s Minto Mingle. The clouds, cool temperatures and rain never materialized and a beautiful weekend was enjoyed by everyone.. We especially enjoyed the nice deck at Arabellas Landing where the potluck was held and we all sat in comfy chairs and at tables. The Minto races began Saturday at noon with nine minto s at the start line. Moderate to light breezes blessed the day and never quit blowing. Unfortunately the wind direction pretty much eliminated a windward start, so we reached much of the day. The persistent 90 to 180 degree wind shifts (a Gig Harbor norm) made sailing interesting. Sunday was more of the same weather and a total of 5 races started. Results: A fleet 1st place James Judd from Sydney, Australia. 2nd place Susan Moblo, 3rd place Ron Moblo, 4th place Pat Stewart, 5th Place Mike Ellis, 6th place Ted Healy 7th place Tom Davis, 8th place Darren Davis, 9th place Jeff Hart.

B fleet 1st place Steve Sisson ( by a lot of first place finishes) 2nd Place Stu Ren, 3rd place John Stewart, 3rd place Doug Andrews, 4th place Emma Hat and crew, 5th place Donna. This year we had many new and old friends visiting us from afar. The furthest distance away honors had to go to James Judd from Australia. Last year you may remember the story of him flying in from Sydney the night before Minto Mingle and reading about Minto Mingle in 48 North magazine. He purchased a boat that same night and brought it to Minto Mingle the next day to race. Jet lag and all. Well, we thought we had seen the last of him as he went back to Australia. Sure enough, like a bad pennie, he shows up again this year with new sails (bought just a few days before) and wins the races. Darren Davis brought his Minto from Everett towed behind Halcyon (his 38 ketch) and Ted and Shawn Healy commuted daily from Seattle by car to join us this year. We welcome these folks and really hope they had a good time and will join us again next year. I want to thank some very dear volunteers who helped run the races. Without these people we could not have done this event. Thank you to the John Stewart family (Pat and Rosemary Stewarts son, daughter in law, and granddaughters ) for supplying Rachel and Rebecca Stewart who started, recorded, and ran the chase boat and directed the races on water. These young ladies did a fabulous job and were a fun part of this event. Doug Andrews also ran the races from the water and helped set up the race course. Mike Ellis, thank you for directing schedules and organizing lists. Everyone pitched in to makes this event a whole lot of fun!!! Please forward comments about the new venue, race format, price point and any concerns/ ideas to Ron Moblo Shepherds2R@gmail.com We are always striving to improve this event AND make it fresh and different year to year. We need fun ideas. Boats in attendance : Too Fat to Fly, TNT, Cheers, Cherokee, Rhumb runner, Erie, Hobbs, Mapril June, Sweet Surrender, Brigadoon, Suddenly, Sir Rowdy, and Halcyon. By car : John Stewart family, Ted and Shawn Healy, and James Judd. I know of a few other boats who tried to attend (and paid), but last minute could not attend. We hope to see you next time.

2012 Labor Day Poulsbo Cruise Wrap-Up It was perfect summer-like weather for the end-of-summer rendezvous. This was a two-club event. Between PBSPS and TTPYC and guests, we assembled 27 boats on E dock (The boats: Afterglow, Andromeda, Attitude, Autumn Mist, Brigadoon, Brizo, Bud Man, Final Answer, Friendship, Guiding Light, Island Ranger, Key Allegro, Knotty Time, Laff n Gecko, Lazy Daze, Mapril June, No name, Prime Meridian, Private Reserve, Salty Dawg, Sea Eagle, Sir Rowdy, Sloe Tango, Sweet Surrender, Tarnhelm, Tiburon, and Water Skipper). We also had a guest appearance by Anne and Laurence Yeadon-Jones, authors of the Dreamspeaker Cruising Guide series. A special thanks to USCG Auxiliary and PBSPS member Craig Brown for his thorough and wellreceived tutorial, demonstration, and practice session with signal flares and fire extinguishers on Saturday. One highlight of the weekend was the blindfolded dingy races. It was certainly a hoot for this spectator.) Three teams (Jim Sola with granddaughter Shelby Woolley coaching, Sebastian Woolley with Tom Hubbard; Ryan Hubbard with Kristie Brame) battled it out in 3 heats, all earning recognition & prizes at the awards ceremony. The Sunday pre-happy-hour contest Build a Labor-Saving Machine out of odds n ends (provided by Debra Valpey) was, well entertaining. The winner: a Leggo transport device. (It looked a lot like a sailboat to me.) Several happy hours and potlucks presented a sumptuous variety. Another special thanks to the people who volunteered their ovens for cooking the Monday morning egg casserole dish, ingredients expertly provided by Sebastian. The host committee (Ray & Debra Valpey, Don & Kristie Brame, Jim Sola & Sebastian) also appreciates the appreciation that everyone expressed. This was a good rendezvous with a group of old and new friends.

Membership Corner Doug and Sharon Andrews and Samantha (woof, woof) Membership Chairs We are getting lots of new members... so let me know if you need more cards! Doug and Sharon Andrews And Samantha! Doug and Samantha in Poulsbo Mid-Sound Summer Social Kersten Hubbard, Chair The Mid-Sound Summer Social, co-sponsored by the Des Moines Marina and the Three Tree Point Yacht Club was a great success this year. This annual event raised money for the Des Moines Area Food Bank and the Hospitality House, a women s shelter in Burien. Races took place each Thursday for six weeks following the Fourth of July and this year we had over 25 boats on most Thursdays; over the course of the races, 31 boats participated. On the final night this year, the theme was Hawaiian Shirt night and a good time was had by all. This year, the club recognized the boats that raised the most funds for the charities. Wind Ensemble was recognized for raising the most funds overall, as well as the highest contributions for the Des Moines Area Food Bank. Sloe Tango was recognized for raising the most funds for Hospitality House. Each boat will receive a burgee to identify their accomplishments. Overall the event raised $7,500 over the 6 week period. If you missed this year s events, but would like to donate to the charities, you can reach Hospitality House at and the Des Moines Area Food Bank at And planning will begin for next year's events, so be sure and sign up to help us make next year's events as special as this year. Thanks to all the hosts, sponsors, and participants! We couldn't do it without you!

EXTRAS! July's Contest Winner: Where in the World Are Doug and Sharon? TTPYC's own Mapril June's World Tour Doug and Sharon Andrews took their boat on a world tour last month. They hit all the hotspots (and one cold) on their way back from TTPYC's Gig Harbor Day's Cruise. Can you guess from the photos all the places where they went? Best of all, with a little help (PhotoShop) the tour only cost them $5.00 in fuel! The first one to send the names of all the locations to Kristie at K6352@aol.com was Pat Ellison. She will collect her prize Here are the correct answers. Pat had the most with 5 correct. 1. Vashon Island 2. Paris, France 3. Sydney, Australia

4. Antartica 5. This was the hardest one: Mt. Kilamanjaro They needed new bottom paint after this one! 6. Washington, D.C. Thanks to Tom Hubbard... their photographer... for these great shots!

Barnacle Contest for September What was Debra's first boat? Who got new sunglasses in Poulsbo? Be the first to Kristie at Barnacle Request! For the October issue, I would love to publish some brief descriptions and photos of your summer cruises. Send you favorite photo and caption to Kristie Brame at K6352@aol.com. Thanks! We received this press release which I thought was interesting, so I am passing it along. The Boat Galley helping you get the most out of your boat s kitchen Like to eat on your boat? Sure, we all do. It just adds to the fun! What s better than eating dinner and watching the sun set over the water... or an early morning, watching the birds with a cup of coffee and warm homemade coffeecake in hand? But turning these visions into reality involves overcoming some challenges in cooking aboard. There s less space for food and equipment, not to mention less counter space. There may be limited water and electrical power. The refrigerator or lack thereof may pose other challenges. There s no electric mixer, garbage disposal or dishwasher. Most of us want cooking aboard to be pleasant, a part of the general fun aboard. And now there s a web site to give you the answers you need, regardless of whether it s your first time cooking aboard or you re more experienced and looking for a solution to a particular problem. TheBoatGalley.com is devoted to helping boaters get the most out of their kitchens. Written by Carolyn Shearlock, a former cruiser, articles focus on practical ways to cook without prepared foods and electric appliances, with foods that store well on a boat. As Carolyn says, in six years of full-time living aboard and cruising, she learned a lot about what works (and what doesn t) aboard a boat. And now she s passing it on. The Boat Galley isn t a gourmet cooking site, or limited to recipes although there are a few boat-friendly recipes. There s a wealth of information on how to store food on a boat, things to think about in choosing galley equipment, tips on dealing with a temperamental oven or stove, making your refrigerator or cooler more efficient, hand mixing, choosing the right water filter, staying cool in the galley, clearing a balky drain and more over 250 articles to date and another one added every few days. The Boat Galley also has an active Facebook group ( asking questions, sharing equipment 'finds' and passing on tips -- that you're sure to 'Like'!
