1 Dates to Remember April 7 Spring Series 1 14 Spring Series 2 29 May 1 Day at the Museum Cruise (Tacoma) Spring Regatta 28 Spring Series 3 May 5 Spring Series 4 12 Spring Series Memorial Day Cruise June 2 Summer Series 1 7 Mid-Sound Sailing Social Cruise Commodore s Corner Carol Jones, Commodore The Barnacle Well spring has finally arrived. With that we kicked off our first cruise of the season; Crab feed at Blake Island. The weather didn t cooperate very well this year, but everyone still had a great time. Big thanks to our hosts Tim and Caroline McShane for putting on a great event. Lots of fun games and of course the crab was great and the potluck dishes everyone brought made dinner a real feast. I also wanted to thank Dean and Shelley Conti for hosting happy hour on their beautiful new boat Friday night. I think we set a record of 26 people on their boat inside and out. Now that it is officially spring, that means the first race of the Spring Series will be Thursday April 7 th beginning at 6:30pm. Hope to see a lot of boats out there. These races are always good practice for Swiftsure. We want to wish Joan Marie VanGasken a speedy recovery after her surgery this past week, we are thinking about you. The Mid Sound Sailing Social event is coming along nicely. We will be holding the event every Tuesday in June beginning June 7 th. Once again the event will benefit the Des Moines Food bank. More information will be provided during the next couple of months. Our next cruise is in Tacoma at the Dock Street Marina on April 29 th through May 1 st. Jim and Vicki Carey have all kind of fun things planned. This is a great spot for a club cruise. Many of the museums are within walking distance of the marina as well as great restaurants and pubs. If you can t bring your boat, there is plenty of parking nearby so that you can still participate. See you on the water

5 2016 Crabfeed March 12-13th What would the Crabfeed be without strong prevailing wind and rain? Cruisers had to wait for that WOW-Window Of Weather-to make the trip to Blake. Once there, with all tied securely to the docks, we could begin to relax. We followed the weather forecast to plan for an early departure home on Sunday-even earlier because the clocks sprung forward (is sprung a word? Yes! ). Happy to report cruisers made it back to port before the storm hit. Cruisers rendezvoused on Equus for happy hour on Friday. Incredibly, we all fit on the boat! The Ranger reminded us that the raccoons were out and about, grubbing onshore and the docks. Luckily we did not have late night visitors. Geese and deer were abundant. You had to mind your step and clean your shoes before getting on the boats. On Saturday, cruisers gathered for the games, Crabjack, like 21, Tangram Relay and Assembly, collecting shapes and assembling all 7 shapes into a form and Irish Wordfind. Before the games could begin, Lake Blake in the shelter had to be drained. Several Drainage Engineers took the challenge to reroute the drain from the shelter, and sweep the Lake dry, thank you! The wind was chilly, so the roaring fire in the shelter fire pit kept us warm and smelling like a campfire the next day. Thanks to all who contributed the wood, and there was leftovers for future users of the shelter. The games began with Crabjack, a game of 21. Players competed for tokens, those with the most tokens for the Round advanced. Interestingly, at one table all players beat the dealer with hands of 21, in the same hand! First Round winners, Daniel Downhour, Dennis Hansen, Tom Spohn, and Ray Valpey advanced. Round 2 winners, Ray and Daniel played for the Championship. Congratulations Ray, Crabjack Champion! The rules were a little loose, but all in all, there was some tough competition. The second game, Tangram Relay and Assembly, teams of two participated collecting the 7 shapes, then putting the shapes into the designated forms. Debra Valpey, shared the story of Tangram with the group, a vase shattered into 7 pieces, and rather than put the vase back together, the pieces were put together to make other shapes. Teams were challenged with creating a square. Daniel Downhour and Kim Carroll, were first to put the shapes together into a square. The game got harder, when teams were asked to make a bunny and

6 duck-without the outline form. You can imagine how many different bunnies and ducks were put together! Next time an outline will be provided. Enough of that, teams went on to make their own unique versions of crabs from the shapes. Irish Wordfind game sheets were passed out to cruisers, who had to find 41 words related to Ireland, and name the 4 rivers of Ireland embedded in the game. The words appear - horizontally, vertically, diagonally, forward and backward. Heather Conti found all 41 words and 2 of the rivers in 25 minutes! The next highest number of words found was 28-a three way tie between Joy Clifford, Emmelie Stewart, and Kim Carroll. The 4 rivers were Poddle, Liffey, Shannon and Carey. The Tabletop theme was Spring Forward, each display was described by the designers/creators, then voted by applause-there were no envelopes from the judges. Ingrid Hansen s Springtime display took the top prize; Debra Valpey s Salish Sea Spring was a close second. Other displays included Crab Angst -crab leg into/out of a wine bottle, An Eclipse of Solar Powered Lights, TTPYC Blake Island Race 2 nd Place Mug with seashells and candle. Thanks to all for making them for the tables and sharing. We had 12 boats attending Allez, Brigadoon, Daybreak, Equus, Kingfisher, Rhumb Runner, Sloe Tango, Stella Maris, Tapawingo, Too Fat to Fly, Viva!! and Yikes II. Four legged crew included Tunie and Molly. The potluck dishes were excellent, as usual. Special thanks to all who played the games, supplied the wood and built the fire, helped set up and clean up, and pack out the garbage. You really make the cruises a success! Ben Stewart promptly helped dock the boats, which was greatly appreciated. Jean Spohn helped us reduce our garbage footprint by collecting compostables. The crab from the Fish Peddler, formerly Johnny s was very tasty too. Thanks again! Cruisers loosened dock lines early on Sunday (even earlier because we changed the clocks forward) to beat the impending storm home. We were happy to watch the white caps from our living room, Sunday afternoon, knowing that cruisers made it to their home ports.

7 A DAY AT THE MUSEUM and WHISKEY & CHOWDER EVENT This year s cruise to Tacoma will be the last weekend in April. APRIL 29-MAY 1 ST. We have reserved 10 slips at Dock Street Marina but you have to call and make your reservations individually. The phone number is (253) Please make your reservations early as they only hold the slips until April 14th. See last months Barnacle for info on getting the Murray Morgan bridge opened if your mast is more than 64 feet. There will be a crossword puzzle involving words associated with Tacoma and the cruise to work on during the day as you enjoy the museums and downtown. Bring your cowboy hat and or boots to wear to the potluck and the Hootenanny afterward. (With enough whiskey everyone can sing!) We will be learning some cowboy standards in keeping with The Northwest Cowboys in Art exhibit at the Tacoma Art Museum. (Some of the words may have been changed to reflect our sailing roots). The potluck on Saturday will be a Whiskey and Chowder event. It would be helpful if you let me know whether you plan to bring a crockpot of chowder, a salad or a dessert. Everything else will be provided for the Saturday meal. Please me at jvcarey2@msn.com or call or text me at to let me know you are coming and whether you can bring a crockpot of chowder, salad, or dessert. Also please bring your favorite whiskey for Tasting. This could just be a couple of airline size bottles if you wish. We will have tasting shot glasses. Special Treat: Janet will have the Ships Store at the cruise at Dock Street. She will have the TTPYC decals and burgees for sale.

11 Des Moines Marina Association Update Ben Stewart, TTPYC and DMMA Board Member The past year was a very good and productive year for the DMMA. Three Tree Point Yacht Club was a big part of the success we had shaping the marina polices and the marina budgets. Both organizations were a huge part of adding an additional $300,000 to the marina's capital expenditures fund. On a personal note, I am so impressed by the number of active TTPYC members that attend and help with the DMMA's meetings and positions. Whether it was the December Marina Appreciation Night, the January Des Moines Marina District Stakeholders meeting or our April and October General Membership meetings, I am very proud of the attendance and support that our club gives to the DMMA. I always enjoy pointing this out to my fellow DMMA board members. Thanks so much. Many of you are aware that the City of Des Moines has a PAID PARKING proposal currently being reviewed by the city council. The DMMA has submitted a position statement to the Des Moines Marina and the City of Des Moines. Our current position is to control the south marina parking lot, but not to implement a paid parking system. Basically, we want the lot to be closed from dusk (or 10:00 PM) until dawn to non-marina related traffic, but left open to the public during the day. Marina tenants would have 24 hour access to the south parking lot. The general public would still have free access to the south parking lot during day time hours. Our next DMMA general membership meeting is April 13, 2016, at 7:00 PM. The location is the Des Moines Activity Center on 216th. If you have any questions about the south marina paid parking proposal, please come and ask questions. We will also be voting on our current DMMA Board and collecting our annual membership dues ($25). If you cannot make it to the meeting please mail your DMMA payment directly to DMMA; P.O. Box 98337; Des Moines WA Below is the DMMA calendar for 2016 and the new member application form.
