June C O X S W A I N T H E N E W S L E T T E R O F T H E G I G H A R B O R Y A C H T C L U B Vice Commodore Kevin Baerg Commodore Mary Waterbly A COMMENT FROM THE COMMODORE Rear Commodore Bobbie Higgins As I write my last Coxswain article, I find myself a bit overwhelmed. I have so many words of appreciation to extend that it could seem tiresome to the readers. Shayne and I feel blessed to have had the honor to serve on The Bridge of Gig Harbor Yacht Club. We have met and worked with so many wonderful people that it is difficult to acknowledge the deep feelings of friendship and support that we have felt. There are many who have worked tirelessly for our club. Some of you have worked for an event or two, some whose jobs have spanned the entire year. I have tried to thank members as they completed individual events, but I have not had the opportunity to acknowledge those who have worked all year long in a position. To begin, thank you to Dave Behrens for his tireless work on this newsletter, The Coxswain. Thank you to Scott Hauter and Harry Hovey who make sure that our bar is stocked, ready to open and serve for all the events of the year. Mary Sapp shops before every meeting to be sure that we have the dry goods necessary to run our club. Thank you to Paul Thorpe and Shayne Waterbly who regularly make adjustments and postings to our website. Louise Babbitt has run our Ship s Store this year, made a profit, and given us the ability to select a wide variety of merchandise from a catalog. Cathie Johnson works behind the scenes to find our dinner servers and galley crew while P/C Yolanda Essig makes sure that our dinner count is done correctly. I must thank our Fleet Captain, Buzz Curry, who helps with every cruise and keeps our cruise records and accounts. Our Membership Chair, P/C Dean Dennis, created a membership drive that brought in 21 new member numbers. George Babbitt, along with the Budget Committee makes sure that our finances are correctly organized. P/C Bob Kimbrough is our Building Manger; when something is not working properly, Bob is there to complete the repairs. Gordon Robilliard, Landscape Chair, organized and helped us with the repair and resealing of our parking lot, organizing outdoor work parties, and is working to complete the wall project in the back. Karen Triplett, Rental Manager has worked very hard renting out our club this year and has several rentals booked for as well. Donna Printz has table decorations for us at every meeting. P/C Jim Anderson, By-Laws Chair, faithfully attends every Board Meeting to assist
Commodore s Message continued us and is Chair of our Power Boat Racing Committee. Erik Carlson is our current Sail Chair and has done a terrific job of coordinating our races and event. GHYC had a terrific Opening Day at Seattle Yacht Club. We had a bit of rain, but the downpour held off until after the parade. Mike and Lynda Burton planned and executed a great event for all of us. Jerry Burton graciously volunteered Sea Cloud as the Officer s Boat for the parade. Little did he know that he would also become a rescue boat for the VIP s on a SYC boat when he took about 22 people back to Dock Zero after their boat would not start. Dick and Mary Sapp volunteered Cascadia as the Decorated Boat and took third place in the competition. We had a great dock party to promote our club organized by Bob and Traci Darmody and P/C Dean and Kathy Dennis. Two of our members rescued boaters in distress as they navigated their way to Seattle. Chris and Willow Williamson rescued a boater whose boat had capsized off Point Defiance, and Ken Malich and Gary Cousins rescued a sail boater who had gone overboard after leaving the Ballard Locks. This speaks to the courtesy and kindness that GHYC continually offers to one another and to those in trouble. The Commodore s Ball was a wonderful night for Shayne and me. We were honored to have our family, Grand 14 friends, and GHYC friends in attendance. Thank you to P/C Steve and Debbie Franklin for a fantastic evening. We had so much fun! We cannot begin to express our appreciation to Gig Harbor Yacht Club for their support during our three years on the Bridge. Dave and Trina Caldwell hosted a terrific Memorial Day Cruise at Bremerton Yacht Club. Although, I was unable to attend, I have seen pictures and heard that a great time was had by all. Thank you. Coming up I want to offer thanks to Dave and Chris Neely for hosting the May TGIF. Ken Malich and Darcie Cousins are in the process of collecting GHYC memorabilia for the time capsule. Items from the previous time capsule will be displayed at the May 30 TGIF. Moving forward, we have the Gig Harbor Maritime Gig Festival the weekend of June 6 8. There will be some GHYC vessels on display at the public dock, participants in the parade and also the Blessing of the Fleet. I hope to see many of you there. Finally, June 11 will bring Change of Watch. Leaving the Board of Trustees are Jerry Lawrence and Ken Malich. Thank you for your three years of dedicated service. Joining Steve Essig, Bob Darmody, and Darcie Cousins on the Board are Don Pannen and Jon Freemen. Last but not least, I must thank Secretary, Debbie Ploeger, and Treasurer, Bill Stults. These two work hard behind the scenes to be sure that our club records are kept properly, our bills paid, and that GHYC runs like a business. I am excited to welcome Debbie Lee as Rear Commodore Elect for our club. She will join a great pair, Commodore Elect Kevin Baerg and V/C Elect Bobbie Higgins on the Bridge. It has been an honor and a joy to work with these two great people. My best wishes for Gig Harbor Yacht Club. Thank you for the privilege and honor to be a part of this great club. It has been a fantastic experience! Fair winds to all, Mary

Dues invoices will be sent in early June for our next fiscal year of July 1, 2014 through June 30, The invoice date is July 1, 2014, however, we welcome payment before that date. Checks will not be deposited until after July 1. The preferred payment method is by check. If you do pay by cash please include a copy of your invoice or a note including your name. The cash should be the exact amount since we don t keep cash on hand to give change for dues payments. These envelopes can be placed in the Treasurer s inbox at any GHYC event by Bill Stults or another officer. Payments are due by July 31, 2014, Please make every effort to get your payments in by the end of July. At your option, two payments can be made where one-half is paid in July and the other half in January. There is a $25 dollar processing fee associated with this option. Club resignation must be received via or letter prior to July 31, 2014 in order to resign in good standing according to GHYC by-laws. Your burgee must also be returned. The expiration date on your membership cards is Sept. 30. This is done as a courtesy to those that may be boating after July 31 and are not able to receive their renewed membership cards. July 31, 2015 is the dues renewal deadline, not Sept. 30, July Vashon Island Cruise - Strawberry Festival Join us for a relaxed cruise to Quartermaster Harbor by Burton on Vashon Island for a fun weekend enjoying the Strawberry Festival and a BBQ on the beautiful deck of the Quartermaster Yacht Club. We ve been allowed to use the club s dinghy dock, which is on the South side of the club. Friday night we will be noshing on heavy appetizers at 6:00pm. Please bring your favorite appetizer to share and whatever you would like to drink. Paper goods will be provided. We will have a salmon BBQ on Saturday night at 6:00pm. Bring a side dish and BYOB for Saturday night. We will be providing the salmon and dessert. It would also help if you bring your own plates and silverware, since we need to haul out all trash. Sunday morning we will be providing brunch at the Quartermaster Yacht Club at 10:00am to include egg casserole, fresh fruit and pastries. We will provide paper plates and plastic silverware. On Saturday have fun at the Strawberry Festival with a parade that starts around noon. (You are on your own for breakfast and lunch). There will be the traditional Grand Parade, Beer Garden, Wine and Jazz Fusion, the Classic Car Parade, Vashon Artists in Ober Park, music and MORE! 10 Member of the Month Mike and Lynda Burton Congratulations to Mike and Lynda Burton who have been chosen as Members of the Month! Mike and Lynda worked hard to make sure that Gig Harbor Yacht Club had a fantastic experience at Opening Day at Seattle Yacht Club. Theirs was not an easy task, and they represented our club with grace and a sense of humor. Please thank these two great people when you see them! Maiden Voyage Brings Luxury Yacht to Gig Harbor As part of their daily employment, GHYC members Greg and Marlys Clark brought the D'Natalin IV, a brand new 145 foot Christianson yacht into the harbor to meet its new owners. Built in Vancouver, WA its home port will be Georgetown, Cayman Islands. At this printing we have no information on who the lucky owners are or where the maiden voyage will take them. But a couple things are for sure beautiful yacht and lucky skippers. Thanks Greg and Maryls for sharing this vessel with us, if only for a short time. And thanks for hosting the GHYC Burgee. 11 Sail Report Let s check what is in the sailbag this month! May Series wrapped up Thursday, May 31st. Results will be on the web. Trophies and plaques will handed out at the June meeting for the series. Gig Harbor had a good representation of boats for the Single/Double Handed Race to the Straits which was help the same weekend as Opening Day. Boats from Shilshole race to Port Townsend on Saturday. Once there they spend the night with a little partying. Sunday is the return. Over 130 boats started the race on Saturday for a quick run north. But only about half the boats finished on Sunday. Best finish in class was Fandango they took a First! Bill Harter / Merry Maker 4 th - Class 6 Tom Mitchell / Wildflower 2 nd - Class 8 Manfred Schmiedl / Brio 4 th - Class 8 Ryan Storkman / Fandango 1 st - Class 17 Mike Tunney / Cuatro Vientos 4 th - Class 17 Summer sailing in the harbor: Unofficial Thursday evening races will continue all summer, through September. Anything and anyone that sails is welcome. No entry fees, no sign up. You can show up for one or as many as you wish. And don t forget Jack and Jill in September! Put it on your calendar now. So set aside the weekend of September 14 and 15. And my year end THANK YOU to ALL of you that help the program this year, supporting races both on and off the water, at the club and in the many ways your put forth the effort to make GHYC standout on the sound. Oh. And Joan and Jaime take over from here. I am relieved! Erik Carlson, Sail Chair:
RBAW Report Pushing our agenda on your behalf, RBAW won a few, lost a few and the verdict s out on a few more this last Legislative session. The No-Discharge-Zone process from our State s Dept of Ecology has finished comments period with about 190 responses thru RBAW s VoterVoice system (thanks to all who responded), but a wake-up call! -- Environmentalists submitted over twelve THOUSAND responses (most likely, all-for the full NDZ) so if we boaters want an effective voice on such policy decisions, we ve GOT to get more organized!!! So far, the request to declare the All-Puget-Sound NDZ has not yet been sent to EPA in Washington DC and indeed cooler heads may bring about some modifications: Steve Sewell, the Governor s new appointee as Economic Development director, MARITIME sector, Dept of Commerce, vows he will be pushing for a more nuanced approach by Dept of Environment, especially as the economic ramifications for smaller commercial vessels are dire indeed. We recreational boaters may gain from this; maybe a localized zone-by-zone NDZ?? Stay tuned Coast-Guard funding cutbacks have them thinking about virtual aids-to-navigation huh? Yep, instead of the (significant) cost of maintaining buoys, it is now technically feasible for a virtual buoy to show up on your AIS-screen useful for all the big commercial ships with full-fledged electronic navigation systems but what about all us Recreational Boaters who still get out our binocs to zero in on those red-green buoys to keep OFF the shoals? Governmental cutbacks like this could hurt the small-boat crowd more than the big corporate interests with shipping fleets so once again we MUST have our voice heard Coast Guard has been holding meetings all around the country about their plans to modernize AtoN s (Govt CodeSpeak for Aids to Navigation = buoys and markers) the meeting in OUR region is Tuesday June 3, 6-8pm at Seattle Public Library (main bldg auditorium, downtown parking under the bldg for only $5) --- contact Paul Thorpe if you are interested to go; maybe carpool? Your RBAW delegate, Wayne Gilham
Power Boat Report BYC/POYC Easy Pickins 2014 This was the last year for the Easy Pickins contest as GHYC and TYC are bringing back to the circuit of South Sound contests, the Filucy Bay Challenge. The water was great, sun was out and everyone had a great day on the water. This contest took contestants well into Dyes Inlet and up toward Silverdale. These are waters normally not traveled by most and provided an interesting change of scenery from our usual contest routes. I said the waters were great and although that s true, there was some wind that provided challenges for contestants in terms of how best to compensate (we are allowed a +/- 10% rpm adjustment for these conditions). Of the three GHYC contestants, George & Louise Babbitt (General Quarters) came in 1 st in their class, Jerry & Shirley Downer (Norwester) were 2 nd in their class and yours truly, Jim & Linda Anderson were 3 rd in our class. The fact, the waters and weather were fairly nice was not reflected in the overall scores however. 1 st Overall had a score of %, 2 nd Overall was % and 3 rd Overall (Fred & Linda Cole Mousetrap for POYC) with a score of %. Every other score was over 2%. PYC Liberty Bay Challenge 2014 Fred & Linda Cole (Mousetrap) were the only GHYC participants in this year s Poulsbo contest and what an effort by the Cole s. They received 3 rd Place Overall honors with an amazing % score. Congratulations Fred and Linda. The above contest result data just goes to show that even with all the tide & current data available and years of experience competing in these contests of navigational skills, there is always a great deal of unpredictability involved with boating on the waters of Puget Sound. This is of course one of the best reasons for participating in the sport of Predicted Navigation which will provide you with skills that are very relevant to boating in these great waters we all love. Gig Harbor Yacht Club s 2014 running of our Invitational Log Contest June 14, 2014 Only a short time left before our Club s hosting of the last Navigation Contest before summer cruising. I want to thank Dick & Eva Bennison in advance for allowing us to use their dock to moor guest contestants from other clubs. You folks are great. This year s contest route will be a simple one with contestants heading north from the harbor, up Colvos Psg to the #3 Light and then back south to the harbor again. Easy route and as everyone knows, the currents always run north in Colvos and if you believe that, there s ocean front property for sale in Arizona. Trust me, it ll be a great day and lots of fun on the water. 15 A Fond Adieu and Thank You Well GHYC buddies. This is my final issue of the Coxswain. After 3 ½ years as your editor I think it s time for a change. I want to thank all of you who have provided articles, ads and photos. THANKS to all four of the PC s I have served under Yolanda, Dean, Steve and Mary. Special Thanks to Sheila Mordue, Paul Thorpe, Jim Anderson, Erik Carlson, Shayne Waterbly and the many others who were always there to help fill the pages, and locate my typos. I could not have done this without all of you. Thank You and Be Well. Dave Dinners for Eight Dinners for Eight is a delightful program and a perfect way to get to know your fellow Yacht Club members in a smaller setting. This is how it works. Couples who sign up will attend four dinners during the course of the year. Each dinner is held at a different member s home. The host member is responsible for the menu and providing the entree. One of the other four couples will provide the appetizer, another, the salad and bread and the fourth couple provides the dessert. Each couple brings whatever they would like to drink. Your responsibility will be different at each dinner. The schedule is arranged so that the mix of couples will be different at each of the four dinners. These dinners give you a wonderful opportunity to chat and get to know each other better. If you are unable to attend one of the dinners, you are obligated to find a substitute starting with the alternate list or from the Yacht Club membership. We need to have multiples of 16 and will have a maximum this year of only 32 couples, so signing up early makes sure you re on the list and helps with all the coordinating. The dates will be October 25, 2014, and January 10, February 21 and April 18, If you have questions or would like to be put on the list, please contact Yolanda Essig at or uniqtrav2@cs.com
What s Under Some Other Folks Boat? By Dave Behrens From harbor to harbor and ocean to ocean, what s under our boat differs only by the species name. Everywhere you go it s the same. No matter where you are on this watery globe boat bottoms will be fouled with encrusting creatures, the pier pilings will be covered similarly and the bottom will have an amazing collections of fishes and benthic invertebrates. I have been fortunate to explore under boats in many places, and have always been excited at what I have found. Some of the murkiest places are home to the most beautiful species. Let s look at a few. Kuantan, Peninsular Malaysia Timor, Alor, Maumere, Rinca and Komodo, Indonesia
