1 Soundings Newsletter of South Port Sailing Club October Message from Commodore, Mark Dolsen Reflections on September The annual Sail for Hospice was held on a summer like Sunday in very light wind. At the beginning it wasn t much of a pursuit, as everyone struggled to get going on the glassy lake. Eventually the breeze came up in time for everyone to cross the finish line and get back in time for dinner. Bill Steel and his family set records for most money raised, and most time spent at the starting line! To no one s surprise, Spitfire finished first. The Harvest Moon regatta can usually be counted on to provide a variety of weather conditions and this year was no exception. The overcast sky with moderate wind and warm temperatures was followed by about two hours of steady rain and cold breeze, in which I discovered that I really don t have foul weather gear; more like mildly unpleasant weather gear. Fortunately, the skies cleared and the sun came out in time for the beat to the finish. The best part was enjoying the beautiful day back in the harbor, swapping stories and tasting the 5 different offerings of chili while the spinnakers dried out. And in these conditions that differed so much from the Hospice race, Spitfire finished first. Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Monday November 21, and one of the highlights of this meeting is the election of the new executive. Being a member of the Executive is a great privilege and a terrific way to serve the club. Over the next month I will be working with the nominating committee to develop the list of candidates for next year s team. If you are interested in serving or you know of someone who is, drop me an , or better yet, see me at happy hour on Friday, October 7th! The next Executive Meeting is Tuesday, October 4 at 7:15 pm. Members Appreciation Happy Hour Friday October 7th. 6 SPSC 2016 Lake Erie Cruise August 29th. From Member Stu Stratton Although only two boats ended up going, all was good! Saturday: Our adventure started out with Shamar and Grand Slam leaving South Port with sunny skies and a medium wind sailing to the Ambassador Bridge, now with the wind on the nose we motored to Grosse Isle Yacht Club watching the sky slowly darken and the rumble of thunder in the distance. On our approach to GIYC harbour entrance it started to get very dark/black for 4 pm the thunder was intense. Shamar made her berth and tied up, Grand Slam made it halfway into her well "stuck" no need to tie up. The wind was now howling, the rain was a deluge, this lasted about minutes. Good thing for dodgers & biminis. When the storm eased we nudged the boat into well, it took a few attempts, all was good. GIYC was very nice, the club house and staff where great, we sat at the bar having cocktails which over looked Lake Erie what a fantastic view, later we barbecued then hit the sack Sunday: Next morning was amazing there was a slight fog with the sun trying to burn through. Breakfast was always on the boat. Ann and Paul had to wait in the river for a bit while Wendy and I tried to get unstuck. Off to Putin-Bay. No wind so we ended up motoring across the lake with another storm chasing us. Again, as we entered the "C" dock the wind picked up to about 30 kts. This time Grand Slam got tied up first. Then it really hit, Shamar was on a 30 degree heel in the harbour with bare poles in reverse going about 5 kts keeping away from power boats, it was some awesome maneuvering, finally he got her nose close enough to the dock that Ann got us a line, it took 6 guys to pull Shamar's stern around, all was good After a couple cocktails the weather cleared, we did the PIB walk about. Lots of new hotels and swim-up pool bars and people, later we ended having Perch dinners at Mossbacks very good - yumm Monday: Breakfast, Then off to Cedar Point lots of wind today! NE at Kts waves 3-5 great headsail reach to the amusement park. I was surprised by how clean and how well the transient docks were maintained. We all went to Soak City in the park enjoying the Lazy River many times the Wave Pool. Wendy & I found that Ann is a Dare Devil (the need for speed was apparent) Paul & Ann enjoyed the more dangerous rides while we watched and laughed. Later back to the boat for appetizers then off to a restaurant No one was very hungry after all the appetizers. Soup & Salads for everyone. Tuesday: Breakfast together, said our goodbyes, then Grand Slam prepared to set sail. While Ann & Paul were heading off to ride the rides for the next 2 days, Ann lost her glasses the first ride all was not so good. No wind so we motored back to the Bay. Odd, not many boats in the harbour. Was very quiet, like a ghost town. Dinner on the boat. Wednesday: With Shamar still at Cedar Point. We sailed to Scudder. Then had an Island Tour with a friend Pattie that has a cottage there, saw lots and lots of farmland. We ate at the Westview Wings, Burgers & Beer. Back at Scudder met some LMYC members John Murphy, Gus, Trevor also an interesting person from Erie PA "John" The NE wind picked up and the Harbour started to surge, rocky night. Thursday: Shamar had a heavy duty sail to Middle Bass Island it was very windy They stayed at the State Park Marina not much happening on Middle Bass. We stayed another day, although Scudder was getting worse for wind & surging. We walked to the bakery went to the store and hung out with our new friend John. Found out he was Judge and had to be back in Erie PA. Tuesday for a murder trial. 125 miles on the nose 3'to 5' waves. We knew it was going to be a rough night as the locals were showing up at the marina adding extra line to their boats. John and I spent lots of time adjusting and adding extra dock lines as the surge was getting worse. We called them our Scudder Lines. Wendy, John and I went for a Perch dinner at Scudder Beach Bar& Grill Good. That night was one for the 6

7 books, blowing a constant 22 kts out of the NE the harbour surge was huge. The boat was rocking big time. Hard to sleep but woke up siding in the aft cabin 2 one way then 2 back. All dock lines were screeching as they stretched to their limits but held the boat off the dock. All was good! Friday: Breakfast, Winds NE at 15kts. Said goodbye to John, wondering if I would ever see him again. We left scudder around 11am on a hull speed headsail reach sailing for Colchester Harbour.Wendy suggested we phone to reserve, of course I said later. We arrived off Colchester, called for a well, guess what, the last well was gone 10 min prior to us calling. All not so good So off to LaSalle Mariners for the night. Great club felt very welcomed. We needed a peaceful night, we both slept like logs. Shamar left Middle Bass early that morning, had a great sail to the river then pushed on to SPSC. That was a long day. Saturday: No wind! Had some breakfast chatted with some SPSC & LMYC racers off to do CIYC feeder race, then we motored up the Detroit River across the lake and home. Stu Stratton All Was Good!!!!! 2016 Commodores Photos in Foyer As you may have noticed, the Commodore photos are now up to date. We would like to thank member Brian Dawes for volunteering his time to take the photos and have them printed for hanging! 7
