1 Soundings Newsletter of South Port Sailing Club November 2014 Message from the Commodore Doris Hellenbart The boats are out and for the most part, the sailing season has ended. I think we as a club should pat ourselves on the back for a job well done. This year has been the most trying and most uplifting year in our club history. We were challenged but more importantly, we were up for the challenge. We built a new harbour in the coldest winter ever, raised the money to do it, and had record work party attendance from so many members who stepped up to the plate. During and overall we re-grouped as a club. We are all better for what we accomplished. Let us all come out for the Fall Furl and celebrate. This being my last message as Commodore, I want to thank the entire club for making a challenging year much easier than I had originally anticipated. I thank the executive, most of which were new to this forum but were up to the task. All of the chairs did an excellent job. Some jobs however were more trying. We all need to thank John Shaw, who with the help of Paul Bowsher and Brenda Petro, after hours upon hours re-constructed our books and put everything into a new accounting software. We are now able to at any specific moment, see where we are financially. Matt Draisey as race chair was able to oversee the re-start of our racing program, putting in way too many of his own hours to make it fun and interesting for all. Peter Soles as harbourmaster, also had a huge job on his plate and with the help of some amazing members, was able to get us to where we are now. New to his position, Dave Robichaud and his committee put in untold hours keeping the clubhouse and grounds shipshape. Lynn Baker and her committee have kept us entertained the entire year. Kemal Tepe as cruise chair was new to the executive this season and is looking for input from everyone for next year s program. Our flag officers, Ann Ramey and Mark Dolsen also look to your insights as to the continued direction of the club. And, last but not least, Dan Moorhouse in his new position as secretary kept us well organized. It has been a great year and I want to thank everyone who contributed positively in support of all the membership. Your new executive will need this continued encouragement. I know you are all up to it. Thanks again! Andy and I look forward to seeing you all at the Fall Furl November 15th. The Annual General Meeting November 25th. and the Men s and Ladies Christmas dinners December 8th. It has been a pleasure serving as your Commodore. 8 HAULOUT 2014 from Andy Hellenbart Another good and uneventful haul out this year. I would like to thank all the members who participated, working hard to make the haul out go smoothly, and to new members who learned the process by helping. Even though his boat is not stored at the club, a special thank you should go to Wayne Bellemore for directing the crane operator, and make the placing of the boats into their cradles look easy. Also a special thanks should go to the lunch committee of Bill and Lynn Baker, Janet Graybiel and Ann Ramey for keeping the members fed. Only six more months to reverse the process and put the boats back into the water. Exact date to be determined. Thanks again 8
