6 Chapter 1 Intrductin This chapter intrduces HYCU OMS Slutin fr Nutanix and explains hw it interacts with Nutanix Enterprise Clud Platfrm and Micrsft Operatins Management Suite. Abut HYCU OMS Slutin fr Nutanix HYCU OMS Slutin fr Nutanix (OMS Slutin fr Nutanix) is an availability, perfrmance management, and analysis slutin that extends end-t-end service mnitring capabilities f OMS t include n-premises Nutanix appliances. It includes multiple slutins (als referred t as OMS Slutin fr Nutanix functinal areas) with a predefined set f views t fully integrate Nutanix data, events, and lgs int the OMS prtal. This way, it prvides the peratin verview and lg analytics acrss the Nutanix infrastructure and enables delivery f effective business service management. OMS Slutin fr Nutanix als prvides pssibility t generate alerts accrding t availability, perfrmance, cnfiguratin, r security cnditins that are identified. It enables yu t mnitr, detect, trublesht, remediate, and prevent prblems frm ccurring in yur Nutanix appliance. OMS Slutin fr Nutanix prvides the fllwing majr features: Discvery and visualizatin: Autmatic discvery and visualizatin f Nutanix clusters, hsts, strage, and virtual machines (VMs) by using histrical charts and predefined queries. It als includes predefined queries fr Nutanix lg and event analytics. Centralized mnitring f the discvered Nutanix envirnment, lg and event analytics ver the OMS prtal. Health, availability, and perfrmance mnitring: Mnitring f the Nutanix infrastructure health state frm perfrmance issues t utilizatin, latency, lad, and availability. Detectin f perfrmance degradatin befre it affects end users Mnitring f Nutanix infrastructural cmpnents and tasks: Autmatic detectin f Nutanix infrastructural cmpnents, such as: Clusters: Strage, CPU, and memry capacity and utilizatin, I/O latency, IOPS, I/O bandwidth, blcks, hsts, number f VMs. Virtual machines: Number f VMs (per cluster, pwered n/pwered 6

7 Intrductin ff/suspended/paused VMs), ttal CPU and memry utilizatin, ttal VM I/O latency, IOPS. Hardware: Hst CPU and memry utilizatin, number f hsted VMs, hst I/O latency and IOPS, blcks per cluster, Nutanix hardware editins, and number f SSD drives, number f HDD drives. Hardware sensrs: Fans and fan rtatin speeds, cmpnents and cmpnent temperatures, pwer supply and pwer cntrl units, their vltages and wattages. Strage: Strage utilizatin, strage pls, cntainers. Nutanix lg analytics: Prvisin f a central pint fr investigating lgs. Cllectin f, crrelatin f, and search in lg and perfrmance data generated by perating systems and applicatins. Usage f predefined queries t help remediate prblems ccurring in Nutanix clusters. Prblem identificatin and reslutin mechanism: Prvisin f infrmatin that can help yu identify the prblem and its rt cause. Alert-based ntificatin abut increased resurce utilizatin. 7

8 Intrductin Prduct architecture OMS Slutin fr Nutanix uses a sphisticated cmpnent called HYCU OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix (OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix r simply Data Cllectr) that is installed n a system f yur chice (Data Cllectr system). Data Cllectr cnnects t ne r mre Nutanix appliances by using the Nutanix REST API interface and sends the cllected perfrmance data t OMS by using its HTTP Data Cllectr API. Data Cllectr can als act as a syslg server and can frward Nutanix system lg files t OMS. The fllwing diagram shws hw OMS Slutin fr Nutanix cnnects the OMS platfrm and the Nutanix infrastructure. Figure 1 1: High-level verview f the OMS Slutin fr Nutanix envirnment Abut Nutanix Nutanix delivers enterprise cmputing and strage featuring built-in virtualizatin. Nutanix hypercnverged infrastructure natively integrates servers, strage netwrk, and strage int a single x86-based server deplyed in scale-ut clusters. Ndes (hst systems) that are part f the enterprise-scale clusters run industry-standard r native hypervisrs and the Nutanix perating system (AOS, frmerly knwn as NOS). Each server cntains x86-64 prcessrs, memry, slid state drives (SSDs), and traditinal hard disk drives 8

9 Intrductin (HDDs) that aggregate strage resurces int a single strage pl. Capacity is added by adding ndes t the cmputing cluster. Built-in virtualizatin allws applicatins and data t mve freely between n-premises envirnments and public cluds. All data, metadata, and peratins are distributed acrss the entire cluster cmbining physical and virtual strage. Such cmbined functinality eliminates perfrmance bttlenecks, enables predictable scalability withut limits, reduces pwer and space cnsumptin, and eliminates strage cmplexity. Nutanix Enterprise Clud Platfrm features predictable perfrmance, clud-like infrastructure cnsumptin, rbust security, and applicatin mbility fr a brad range f enterprise applicatins withut infrastructure cnstraints. The infrastructure is truly invisible, shifting fcus back t applicatins. Abut Micrsft Operatins Management Suite Micrsft Operatins Management Suite (OMS) is a clud-based IT management slutin that helps yu manage and prtect yur n-premises and clud infrastructure. Yu can benefit frm the fllwing majr value areas f OMS: Insight and analytics Autmatin and cntrl Prtectin and recvery Security and cmpliance In additin t prviding valuable services n its wn, OMS can integrate with Micrsft System Center cmpnents such as System Center Operatins Manager t extend yur existing management investment int the clud. System Center and OMS can wrk tgether t prvide a full hybrid management experience. 9

10 Chapter 2 Installatin and cnfiguratin This chapter cntains instructins n hw t install and cnfigure OMS Slutin fr Nutanix fr bth the Nutanix appliance and OMS sides. T install and cnfigure the prduct, cmplete these tasks: 1. Ensure that the installatin prerequisites are fulfilled. Fr details, see Installatin prerequisites belw. 2. Installatin prerequisites Befre installing OMS Slutin fr Nutanix, make sure that the fllwing prerequisites are fulfilled: Prduct requirements dcumented in HYCU OMS Slutin fr Nutanix Release Ntes are met. Nutanix Enterprise Clud Platfrm prerequisites: Fr each Nutanix cluster that yu plan t mnitr, a Nutanix user accunt is selected. HYCU recmmends that yu select accunts that have Viewer rle assigned in Nutanix Prism: they can nly view infrmatin (and cllect mnitring data). Mandatry fr lw-level hardware mnitring. Fr each Nutanix cluster, a user accunt is selected that can access hardware sensrs n the cluster ndes thrugh 10

11 Installatin and cnfiguratin their Redfish API implementatin. OMS Slutin fr Nutanix supprts cnfiguratins with different user accunts fr different cluster ndes. HYCU recmmends that yu select an accunt that has ReadOnlyUser rle assigned: it can nly view infrmatin (and cllect mnitring data). Credentials f the default Redfish user accunt n Nutanix cluster ndes are usually as fllws: User name: ADMIN Passwrd: ADMIN OMS Slutin fr Nutanix uses these credentials by default, but yu can adjust that as part f prduct cnfiguratin. Adjustment may als be required with clusters that are based n nn-nutanix hardware. OMS platfrm prerequisites: The OMS wrkspace ID and primary key are knwn. T acquire the OMS wrkspace ID and primary key, d the fllwing: 1. Open a web brwser, g t the Overview Micrsft Operatins Management Suite webpage and then click Sign in. 2. On the Sign in t yur accunt webpage, prvide yur access credentials, and then sign in t the OMS prtal. 3. Click Settings. 4. In the Overview page, select Cnnected Surces > Windws Servers. Lcate the Wrkspace ID and Primary Key fields and cpy their cntents. Name reslutin fr the fully qualified dmain name that includes the wrkspace ID is functining. T verify this, n the Data Cllectr system, pen a cmmand shell and run the fllwing cmmand: nslkup <WrkspaceID>.ds.pinsights.azure.cm In this instance, <WrkspaceID> is the wrkspace ID f yur wrkspace. The cmmand utput shuld resemble the fllwing sample utput: Server: <DNSfqdn> Address: <DNSipAddress> Nn-authritative answer: <WrkspaceID>.ds.pinsights.azure.cm cannical name = pinsightsweuds.trafficmanager.net. pinsightsweuds.trafficmanager.net cannical name = pinsightsweu-ds-b.cludapp.net. 12 Installatin and cnfiguratin Data Cllectr system prerequisites: Firewall is cnfigured t enable inbund netwrk traffic n the required prts OMS Slutin fr Nutanix is precnfigured t use the fllwing prts: 8080 (HTTP) 8443 (HTTPS) (syslg) Fr instructins n hw t cnfigure different prt numbers, see sectin Cnfiguring custm prts fr inbund traffic n page 19. Web brwser prerequisites: A cmpatible web brwser is used t access the OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix cnfiguratin GUI. Fr a list f the cmpatible web brwsers, see the HYCU OMS Slutin fr Nutanix Cmpatibility Matrix. The web brwser must be set t allw JavaScript executin. Fr infrmatin n Nutanix Enterprise Clud Platfrm and the OMS platfrm (fr example, hardware and sftware requirements, perating system supprt, and installatin and cnfiguratin prcedures), see the Nutanix and Micrsft dcumentatin. Installing OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix T install OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix, d the fllwing: 1. G t the OMS Slutin fr Nutanix - HYCU webpage and sign in with yur accunt credentials. If yu d nt have an accunt yet, apply fr it at the fllwing address: supprt@hycu.cm 2. When yu are signed in, under Prduct dwnlad, click HYCU OMS Slutin fr Nutanix. 3. Read thrugh the Sftware License and Supprt Terms text. If yu agree with the terms, click Accept and prceed. 4. In the Prduct dwnlad link line, click Dwnlad t transfer the prduct release archive and save it n the lcal system.. 5. Lcate the HYCU.OMS.Slutin.Nutanix.<Versin>.zip file and extract its cntents. In this instance, <Versin> is the prduct release versin. 6. Cpy the extracted hycu-ms-dc-nutanix-<versin>.x86_64.rpm file t the Linux system designated t hst OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix. In this instance, <Versin> is versin f the RPM package. 7. Lg n t the future OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix hst system. 8. Open a cmmand shell and change the current directry t the directry with the installatin package. 12

Run the fllwing cmmand by using a user accunt that has privileges t install RPM packages: rpm -i hycu-ms-dc-nutanix-<versin>.x86_64.rpm T verify that OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix was installed successfully, d the fllwing: 1. Verify that the hycumsdc service is started. Run the fllwing cmmand: service hycumsdc status The cmmand utput shuld resemble the fllwing: hycumsdc is running... PID=<PrcessID> t Tip Yu can use the fllwing cmmands t manage the hycumsdc service: service hycumsdc start stp status restart Cnfiguring OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix T cnfigure OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix, cmplete the fllwing tasks in the OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix cnfiguratin GUI: 1. Cnfigure OMS settings. Data Cllectr uses these settings t determine yur OMS wrkspace it shuld frward data t. 2. Cnfigure Nutanix Prism settings. Data Cllectr uses these settings t determine its data surces (Nutanix clusters). 3. Cnfigure Nutanix syslg frwarding settings. Data Cllectr uses these settings t set up syslg frwarding fr yur Nutanix clusters. 4. Perfrm prduct licensing tasks. Data Cllectr starts cllecting and relaying data after it successfully verifies a lcally installed license file. In specific circumstances, additinal cnfiguratin tasks are required: 1. Cnfigure custm prts fr inbund traffic fr OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix. Prt recnfiguratin is needed when a firewall blcks inbund netwrk traffic n the default (predefined) prts. 2. Cnfigure the prduct t use a prxy server. Prxy server must be used when direct cmmunicatin between OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix and OMS is nt pssible. 3. Cnfigure Nutanix cluster nde-specific Redfish credentials. A special cmmand-line tl set_redfish_credentials must be used t cnfigure Redfish credentials fr individual cluster ndes. 13

14 Installatin and cnfiguratin Cnfiguring OMS settings T cnfigure OMS settings, d the fllwing: 1. Open a web brwser and g t webpage f the OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix cnfiguratin GUI. Example Cnfiguratin GUI webpage URL: The HYCU OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix cnfiguratin wizard windw appears. 2. T let Data Cllectr cnfiguratin wizard guide yu thrugh the prcess, click Start and fllw instructins f the wizard (see the rest f this prcedure fr descriptins f the data yu must supply). Else, click Exit Wizard and prceed t the next step f this prcedure. 3. In the Data Cllectr cnfiguratin GUI, click Micrsft OMS Settings. Figure 2 1: Micrsft OMS Settings page 4. In the main tlbar, click Edit. 5. In the WORKSPACE ID and PRIMARY KEY text bxes, enter the wrkspace ID and primary key yu acquired frm the OMS prtal. 6. Click Save. 14

T let Data Cllectr cnfiguratin wizard guide yu thrugh the prcess, fllw instructins f the wizard (see the rest f this prcedure fr descriptins f the data yu must supply). Else, click Exit Wizard and prceed t the next step f this prcedure. 2. In the Data Cllectr cnfiguratin GUI, click Nutanix Prism Settings. 3. In the main tlbar, click Add. Figure 2 2: Nutanix Prism Settings page 4. In the Add Nutanix Data Surce dialg bx, specify the Nutanix cluster that yu plan t mnitr. T d s, fllw the steps: a. Enter the fllwing data: In the NUTANIX CLUSTER HOST NAME text bx: hst name r IP address f the Nutanix cluster's virtual system In the PORT text bx: prt number (default value: 9440) In the USER NAME and PASSWORD text bxes: credentials f the Prism user accunt cnfigured t be used fr cnnectin t OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix HYCU recmmends that yu select an accunt that has privileges nly fr cllecting (reading) data. 15

Click Save. bxes: credentials fr accessing hardware sensrs n cluster ndes thrugh Redfish API implementatin n the ndes (IPMI web interface credentials, default values: ADMIN, ADMIN) HYCU recmmends that yu select an accunt that has privileges nly fr cllecting (reading) data. i Imprtant The specified Redfish credentials are used fr all cluster ndes. If Redfish API implementatins n different cluster ndes use different credentials, an additinal cnfiguratin step is required later in this prcedure. 5. If needed, cnfigure different Redfish API implementatin credentials fr individual cluster ndes. Fr instructins, see Cnfiguring cluster nde-specific Redfish credentials n page Repeat steps 3 t 5 fr each additinal Nutanix cluster that yu plan t mnitr using OMS Slutin fr Nutanix. Perfrming prduct licensing tasks OMS Slutin fr Nutanix subscriptin-based licenses (licenses fr purchase) are issued fr and bund t a specific Data Cllectr system. They are time-limited. Each license limits the ttal number f CPU sckets in all Nutanix clusters frm where data is cllected by the OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix instance installed n the Data Cllectr system. If the number f actual sckets in the mnitred clusters des nt exceed the number specified in the license, the license is treated as valid. Subscriptin-based licenses are issued based n the license specificatin that is sent in scpe f yur license rder. Timely renewal f yur licensees ensures cntinuity f prduct peratin. OMS Slutin fr Nutanix sftware evaluatin licenses can be used n any Data Cllectr system. n Nte The system where OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix is installed des nt require Internet cnnectivity when the prduct license is activated (the license key is applied). Requesting license activatin keys and activating licenses T request an OMS Slutin fr Nutanix license fr ne OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix instance, and activate the instance s that it starts cllecting and relaying mnitring data, d the fllwing: 1. T let Data Cllectr cnfiguratin wizard guide yu thrugh the prcess, fllw instructins f the wizard (see the rest f this prcedure fr descriptins f the data 16

17 Installatin and cnfiguratin yu must supply). Else, click Exit Wizard and prceed t the next step f this prcedure. 2. In the Data Cllectr cnfiguratin GUI, click Prduct License. Figure 2 3: Prduct License License Manager page 3. If yu are evaluating the prduct and have received evaluatin license (the License.dat file), skip t step 11. If yu purchased the prduct, cntinue with step In the License Manager pane, click Generate t generate a custmized license specificatin that matches yur OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix cnfiguratin. 5. When the license specificatin is ready, click Save t save it t the License.req file. 6. Open a web brwser and g t the Licensing Prtal HYCU webpage t submit a license request 7. If yu already have a licensing prtal accunt, click Sign in and enter yur user name and passwrd. Else, create it first by filling in the request frm n the website. 8. T generate the perpetual license key, click Activate perpetual licenses, enter yur purchase rder number (PO number), and then click Next. 9. T uplad the license request file, click Chse file, brwse t the flder with the License.req file, and select the file. Click Send Request. 10. In the Activate permanent licenses page, review the list f clusters and the number f required CPU sckets within each cluster fr which yu want t activate the license. 11. Click Activate Licenses. 17

18 Installatin and cnfiguratin Within a few minutes, yu shuld receive an frm HYCU Custmer Supprt with a license activatin file (License.dat) attached. 12. Save the license activatin file t a lcatin n the system frm where yu are cnnected t the OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix cnfiguratin GUI. 13. In the Data Cllectr cnfiguratin GUI, in the License Manager pane, click Brwse. 14. Navigate t the flder with the License.dat file, select it, and click Open. 15. Click Uplad and allw a few mments fr OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix t restart. Yur OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix instance n this system is activated. Checking prduct licensing status Data Cllectr cnfiguratin GUI presents infrmatin related t prduct licensing in the Licensing Status widget f the Dashbard page. Figure 2 4: Dashbard page with the Licensing Status widget in the lwer right crner The fllwing infrmatin is displayed: Licensing status: Messages have the meaning as fllws: EXCEEDED NUMBER OF SOCKETS The license is invalid in terms f hw many CPU sckets (Nutanix clusters and hsts) are being mnitred and hw many CPU sckets are licensed. 18

LICENSE IS INVALID The licensed perid expired. Cntact HYCU Custmer Supprt fr assistance. Absence f any message dentes that licensing fr this OMS Data Cllectr fr Nutanix instance is cvered.
