The tide was up so I p was lucky it was a shorter sprint. Kerr said Aulsebrook, McMeel and Parrotte s success in the open women s board relay was a breakthrough for the club. It was our first medal in that event for 10 years, he said. It s good to see the young girls step up in open Eve and Jane came up from under 17s. Kerr praised Aulsebrook and said McMeel handled the competition pressure well. It was Eve s first individual board medal, he said. It was a terrific paddle by her. Jane was second last year in the under 17 girls two-kilometre beach run and managed to turn the tables and get gold. The club s surfboat manager, Kevin Spooner, said the under-23 men represented Victoria at the Australian Surfboat Rowers League championships at Stockton in NSW after winning the gold medal at Victorian Surfboat Rowers League state championship at Seaspray and silver at Life Saving Victoria state championships at Ocean Grove. Sunday 2 March was another red letter day for the club when it christening its surfboat, Dave Fergie Ferguson, at Fairhaven on the surf coast. Mr Spooner said Fergie set up surfboat racing at the club and had given 50 years of service to the lifesaving movement. Money for the boat came from Bernie Taylor and the Grand Hotel in Mornington. During the season, Mornington s under-23 women won pennants at Point Leo and Lorne carnivals. They were the only women s crew willing to tackle challenging conditions at the Fairhaven carnival just prior to the state championships at Ocean Grove where the won the bronze medal, Mr Spooner said. p This was after winning three races and finishing second in the fourth lead-up races before the final. They were smashed by a wave at the start of the final but still managed to fight back and finish third. They had only been together for the last four events due to injury.
