1 R OYAL L AKE OF THE WOODS YACHT CLUB NEWSLETTER, #90 (807) August 24, 2015 COMMODORE S NEWS It is not the rain and the colder weather that bothers me so much as does the changing colours of the birch tree leaves. It is a sad reminder that the end of summer is almost upon us. The good news is we do have two more weeks of yacht club time to enjoy but things are starting to wind down. The tennis trophies have gone in for engraving, some of the sailboats have been put away and more will be stored this week. We have said so long to some of our favourite and hardworking staff including our enthusiastic tennis pros Daniel Fraser. On Sunday we had our end of year awards for sailing with a few brave souls making it in for the awards even if the Rat Portage Rowing Club Cup race was not that well attended. The awards saw some very happy kids and a successful race year for Rob Aitken. Please read on for all the sailing news. Yoga is still on this week with one class running from 10:00 am till 11:00 am Tuesday through Friday. Family night is also a go this week and there are still two more Thursday Night Dinner s and two more Royal Hours to catch up with your lake friends. By the end of the week the warmer weather is supposed to be back and just in time for our Provence themed Thursday Night Dinner. Thank you to Bob and Deidre Kozminski for the Ducks Unlimited gifts at last week s dinner. Can t wait to see what our kitchen and hosts have dreamed up for this week! See you at the club, Week at a Glance (August 24 August 30) Sailing, Tennis, Swimming & Stay N Play have all concluded for the season. Monday, August 24th No Yoga Tuesday, August 251h Wednesday, August 26th Family Night, 6:00 Thursday, August 27th Club Dinner, 6:30 for 7:30 Dinner Friday, August 28th Men s Tennis, 10:00-12:00 Royal Hour, 6:00 BBQ Buffet, 7:30 Kids Royal Hour, 6:00-7:30 Saturday, August 29th Mathewson Cup, 1:00 Sunday, August 30th Mixed Tennis, 11:00-1:00 Liz Kristjansson RLWYC 2015 Commodore

Sad News Michael Lowell Preisler died, surrounded by family, on 15, August after a two year battle with cancer. Michael grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. While attending Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, he met and later married Carla Code Preisler. Both of Carla s parents, Gwen and Charlie Code grew up at Lake of the Woods as did Carla and her brother and sister. Early in their relationship Carla introduced Michael to The Lake of the Woods which he wholeheartedly embraced; that sealed the deal for her. As an avid fisherman and explorer, he would go down the lake with friends but was also content to go exploring and fishing by himself. Michael will be missed by all of his lake friends. He leaves behind his wife Carla, son Dustin (Cat), two granddaughters, Mackenzie Paige and Hailey Regina, a brother Mark (Marcie), and his brother and sister in law, Allan and Barb Code.
3 From your Pro Tennis News Hi RLWYC members. As many of you know, we have now concluded tennis lessons for the summer. It is a bitter sweet ending for myself as I now leave one of the coolest (if not THE coolest) places I have ever been, though I am aware winter is around the corner so now is a good time to scram! It has been a pleasure serving you guys, the members, who have all welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home. I hope to see you again next year attempting to play more tennis than ever before! I have to give a big thanks to Kathy McNamara and Shannon Edgell, the rear commodores of tennis, who have given up their precious summer time to help myself and the tennis program be a success. I also need to give thanks to Ben Rankin who was the assistant coach this year and who did a great job putting up with me as the boss as well as being a great coach to the kids. And then there are the assistant coaches Hannah Blatt, Niels Hurst, and Annie Quinton who filled in the blanks when needed which was much appreciated. It really is a team effort! Thanks for having me at Lake of the Woods, and I hope to see you next year! Daniel Fraser Thank you from the Rear Commodores of Tennis The 2015 tennis season is coming to a close after a very busy summer. There was a constant flurry of activity on the courts. Thank you to everyone for taking part in the many tennis activities offered at the club and being a part of a growing and vibrant tennis community. Thank you to those families who supported our tournaments through donating trophies, participating, and coming out to cheer. Congratulations again to all the winners! We would also like to thank and recognize our Pro, Daniel for his tireless effort. Daniel demonstrated great leadership, organization, and enthusiasm in the tennis program. He was extremely dedicated in trying to make the tennis program a fun and rewarding experience for all involved. Thanks also to Ben and the junior helpers for their assistance in making the tennis program a success. We look forward to another great summer of tennis in 2016! Shannon and Kathy Aquatics In its second year the RLWYC aquatics program really took off. Through lessons, fun swim and bronze classes participants increased their skill level and most importantly their confidence & water safety awareness that is of utmost importance for life on the lake. The CPR & First Aid courses were well received and will be offered again next season. Thanks to everyone for participating and making the program a success and to Jeff Banfield for donating 20 wetsuits to keep everyone warm. I would like to thank head instructor, Lena Sprague, for all of her hard work in organizing and operating the program. She made my job easy and led a group of very talented instructors & volunteers including Katie Ludlow, Sarah Klassen, Caroline Parkhill, Maddy Compton, Max White & Ben Linden. You were a great team! Enjoy everything the fall & winter seasons have to offer and see you next spring (in a wetsuit) & summer back at the Club. Leney Richardson
4 SAILING The official sailing season at the RLWYC has come to successful conclusion. Over 240 lesson units were taught, an increase of 30% over last summer! A big round of applause to our dedicated instructors, lead by Head of Sailing Victoria Konantz. The sailing section successfully integrated four new additions to the Club s fleet: two new RS Fevas and two gently-used CL-16s. The racing season is nearing the end too, with the last race on Saturday Aug 29. The overall winner of the Coyne Riley Cup for Weekend Race Series was Rob Aitken, with a rotating crew of Reid Thompson, Stephen Mitchell, David Nelson, David Fortner & Mark Baird. The Wednesday Night Race Series Richards Cup was jointly won by Bryce Kristjansson & Will Murray, sailing together in a new Feva. A full list of award winners is below. Congratulations! 5 LWDHF is thrilled to announce another record was broken at the 10th Annual Lifesavers Dinner and Auction! Not only did we blast through the ONE MILLION DOLLAR mark of funds raised through Lifesavers, over $275,000 was raised in one night for medical equipment needs at your hospital at the lake! Thank you for being a part of it! Lifesavers Dinner and Auction is the largest event in support of Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation. Our goal is to transfer at least $500,000 per year to your hospital and in one night, Lifesavers generated 55% of that goal! Your continued support allows LWDHF to provide the funds needed to your hospital to purchase the medical equipment necessary to continue to provide quality medical care where we live, work and play. You are making a difference. You are helping to save lives. Thank you! While the thank you banner acknowledges those who helped leading up to and during the event, we would also like to thank all those who attended. Thank you for your tenacious auction bidding and generous pledges to your hospital! We also had a number of people make donations who couldn t join us; thank you! Big shout out to Linda and her staff at RLWYC and to our special Whistle Raffle Girls that no one could say no to! Thank you to everyone who helped make the 10th Annual Lifesavers Dinner and Auction the most successful single night event for your hospital! Catherine Konantz, Co-Chair 2015: Thank you very much to all of the volunteers, donors and supporters and to the Foundation for making this evening such an overwhelming success. The spirit of giving and well-being that was generated during the evening as our lake and town communities united to support our hospital was tremendous to see. Planning has already begun for Lifesavers 2016 and we need your help! If you would like to be a part of the planning committee or join others that have already made a commitment to support next summer s event, please contact LWDHF at lwdhf@lwdh.on.ca or reach out to any one of our 2015 committee members.
Tennis. Last year's winner, Niels Hurst, presented the coveted candy filled trophy to Katarina. Congratulations Katarina!
