1 R OYAL LAKE OF THE WOODS YACHT CLUB SUMMER NEWSLETTER, #16 5 th July 2010 THE CLUB IS HUMMING COMMODORE S NEWS The season, with all its activities, is now in full flow. The staff and kitchen have already shown what they can do at various functions this last week. It s working! It is tedious to talk too much of the vagaries of LOW weather. But Saturday's 3+ inches of torrential rain and heavy thunder storms were remarkable. Nevertheless, 230 hardy souls braved the elements to attend the annual Fish Fry, with a bountiful supply of local pickerel. Amazingly, the numbers, were up from last year. The Club was able to handle the weather situation and all dined in comfort. Then Sunday afternoon arrived bringing blissful sunshine and high temperatures... CLUB IMPROVEMENTS The West End project has now been completed. The floating dock, donated last season by North American Lumber has been connected to shore with a ramp. The access area has been improved for boats and trailers to exit the water. The Club has acquired a small 4WD truck of a suitable vintage from our member and auditor Peter Donald. This works for the hauling of boats from water to the storage area. Should funds be forthcoming in the Capital Campaign, it is planned to link this area to the main Clubhouse by a simple track in the interior of the island. We still need a small, quite possibly old, additional floating or finger dock to expedite landing etc. Any member who has such an item to donate or sell is requested to contact either Dan Tysz or Jim Richardson. The new back-up generator, made possible thanks to the current capital campaign, came into its own on Saturday. The stormy weather led to a power outage during preparation time for the Fish Fry; the generator kicked in seamlessly and quietly, and Chef Dan was back on track immediately. 2 SAILING Racing Results, Zig Zag Regatta: The RLWYC had impressive results at the Zig Zag Open held at Clearwater Bay this past weekend. The Scow class was won by Don Konantz & crew, with Chris Conway & crew coming second. In Optimist, Edward Parkhill placed first, followed by Geoffrey Konantz and Matthew Tory in second and third place, respectively. In the single handed open class, James Tory, sailing in a Laser, placed third. Richardson Regatta, July 10 th and 11 th: Come one, come all! Participants are invited to a preregatta beach BBQ on Friday, July 9 th at the Thomson s cottage on Kalamalka Island. Registration for the regatta is Saturday, July 10 th from 8 to 10 a.m., with the first race at 10:30. The Regatta also includes a casual beef-on-a-bun dinner on Saturday evening, immediately after sailing, at the RLWYC. Scow Clinic - Postponed: The scheduled scow clinic for July 9th has been postponed due to difficulty in locating a suitable clinician. We will keep you posted as to the revised date. Learn to Sail: Our experienced, enthusiastic instructors are prepared for a terrific season of sailing. We currently have space in most of our classes. Please enroll your children as soon as possible to assist us in scheduling staff. Club Series Race Fees: In order to cover the operating costs of club series races, the following fees apply: $10 single handed boats; $15 double handed boats; $20 all other boats. These fees apply to the Kenora Cup, the Gage Cup, and the Club Series races on July 18 th and August 8 th. These fees do not apply to Wednesday night racing. West Landing: The annual $200 fee for summer storage of boats at the West Landing will be charged to all boats parking there in summer These revenues will go to the sailing budget. Boats parking at the West Landing will NOT be charged club series race fees. Scow Crew List: Scow skippers are sometimes short of crew for racing or simply for sailing. We are starting a list of people who would like to act as crew. Please call Head Instructor Brian Fast at the Club to have your name added to this list. OVERWATER GOLF CLASSIC Sign up NOW on the bulletin board for the annual Overwater Golf Classic, to be held on Saturday July 17. Registration will take place at the Club at 12:30 for 1:00 start. $25 per person, $15 per junior, $10 joiner s fee for non-players. Snacks and beverages provided at every hole. Bring your treasures to the Club by Saturday July 17. Please be sure to bring items that are clean and in good repair. Arrive right at 9am for complimentary breakfast and the best deals! If you need stuff picked up or if you would like to help set up or sell contact Gerry Wilson or gerrywilson@kmts.ca TENNIS NEWS The tennis program is in full swing! Junior Camps. Last week was very successful and places are filling for all age groups. Please register your children on line. Adult Clinics. The Doubles Play Strategy clinic was excellent and proved very popular last week. Clinics run on Mondays between pm. Monday July 5 th is to focus on Ground Strokes and on Monday July 12 th, Doubles Play Strategy. Players of ALL levels are welcome; players will be split according to experience and ability. Sign up sheets are in the tennis lounge. Ladders. Several men, ladies and juniors have joined the ladder and will enjoy challenging each other for the top spot. To join, see the ladder and instructions in the tennis lounge. There was a great turn out last week for Ladies (Tuesdays 10-12), Men's (Fridays 10-12) and Mixed Tennis (Sundays 11-1). These sessions are very social, with fun tennis and the opportunity to have lunch served on the deck outside court 1 from 12 noon. Come and join us! Saturday Morning Lessons. Sessions run from every Saturday, excellent value at $15 per player. All players welcome; players will be split according to experience. Sign up either online or via the sheets in the tennis lounge. Sam Peterson in action The season warm-up got underway with some 15 keen types, both members and locals, at Coney Beach last Thursday. The season starts in earnest with ages 12+, ADULTS too, at the Beach, 4.30 pm Monday July 6th and 5 to 11 year olds Thursday July 9th. Judging by last week, the standard of play has much improved on last season and is certainly better than that displayed by the England team in 5 July 2010 Page 3

4 PAINTING CLASS Move Over Monet will take place on Monday July 12th, with instructor Bill Andrews. This popular oil painting class starts at 9:15, ending at 5pm. The cost of $115 includes all supplies, coffee and lunch. Frames will be available to purchase. A copy of the painting to be reproduced is on display at the Club. Just call in advance and Olivia will meet you at the Club. Only $10 per hour per family (cash and cheque only!). COTTAGE MAINTENANCE Jamie Pennock, 16, is available to perform chores and odd jobs in and around your camp (although his Mum says no chain sawing) during the months of July and August. He has his own boat. He can be reached at or he can receive text messages at BABYSITTER / MOTHER S HELP Lindsey Watson is a high school student with extensive experience both as a babysitter and camp counselor. She has her Bronze Cross in lifesaving and her own transport. Call her for your babysitting needs on (not available July 19-30). 5 RLWYC Guest Policy 1. All activity and social guests must be sponsored and signed into the guest book by a member 2. A $10 guest fee will be charged for non members taking part in an activity; e.g. tennis, sailing, yoga, Pilates, children s program etc. 3. The activity guest fee will be charged to the sponsoring member s account 4. Non members taking part in sailing or tennis lessons do not pay guest fees 5. There is no guest fee for those attending social/fundraising events; e.g. Royal Hour, dance, fish fry, Yachtion etc. 6. Camp members do not pay guest fees but must sign guests into the guest book For clarification: - Guests may include family, friends or associates - Guest fees may be waived for specific activities at the discretion of the Executive - There is no guest fee for social events but guests must be signed into the guest book
