1 R OYAL LAKE OF THE WOODS YACHT CLUB SUMMER NEWSLETTER, # th July 2011 THE ACTION HEATS UP! COMMODORES NEWS We are into our mid-season action. And it really is action. It feels like numbers are hitting records in every activity: membership, tennis, sailing, social events and fundraisers. Perhaps it is the glorious weather, or power outages encouraging Members to eat at the Club. But really, it is all happening because YOU want to participate! This weekend featured the exceptional talents of Ferg Devins running a spectacular Yachtion. It was the first of our four main fundraisers for the season, without which we certainly could not maintain the service we offer and continue the running and maintenance of the Clubhouse, docks and sailing facility. A big thank you is due to all of those who participated in so many ways in the Yachtion and were persuaded to put their hands in their pockets either for this or for the highly appreciated Veranda Sale, the best place on the Lake to pick up stuff. We owe a lot to Ferg and Christine Skene for their efforts to put these events together. While we all enjoy the summer, it is also time to think of the future. What do we need to do to ensure our Club continues with its momentum and keeps its facilities in good shape UPCOMING EVENTS for ourselves and the next generation? at a glance... Read on! See the section on the Capital Campaign in this Newsletter with its Golf Tournament, KGC Yoga for Stiff Guys begins, 4-5pm Tues July 19 Monday July 25 focus on tennis. We have some challenges ahead to put our tennis courts into shape. This will be a major topic, both for the Executive and the Members Forum on August 7 th. Roger Murray Co-Commodore Questions or comments about this Newsletter? 2 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Last year we reported that the Capital Campaign had raised an above target sum of $360,000. It was a tremendous effort, spearheaded by Bryce Douglas. Members are already enjoying the new extended deck, seamless service at the Club when the whole Lake is down with no power, and the disappearance of all the clutter into our new storage area. All good things! The Executive has pledged no more campaigns for the next five years and we all know it is time for the next generation to step up. The old guard is bowing out. However, Members are reminded that approximately 20% of our membership actually contributed to the sum raised. That percentage is really not enough! All our capital spending over the last 10 years has gone towards the clubhouse, docks and sailing infrastructure. Very little has been spent on tennis as our facilities seemed adequate at that time. This is no longer the case, the time for delay is over. The largest participation in any Club activity by the membership is in the tennis section. Over 50% of Members or their families use the courts. Yet only 20% have participated in the Capital Campaign to date. The time to look hard at the tennis facility on which we rely has arrived! Our children are playing on woefully inadequate courts, yet we have a vibrant and growing youth tennis program. Do we not owe them and the Club something better? Next weekend the Executive will consider a proposal to address this challenge, partially using the funds already contributed but also newly targeted funds, particularly from tennis playing families, as a final extension of the existing campaign. Further details will be forthcoming in the next Newsletter. Tennis players and others please be prepared! YACHT CLUB DANCE The tradition continues on Saturday July 30 th at the annual RLWYC Dance. Don't miss out: tickets and tables are selling out quickly! Please contact Anna at the Club for tickets: Reserved Table: $810 or 8 $95 each Individual Ticket: $85 (no reserved seat) For those who have already purchased tickets please pick them up from Anna at the Club. Tickets must be presented at the door. All ticket sales are final. Cocktails 6pm Dinner 7:30pm Dancing 9:30pm We are again offering a free safe ride home starting at 10pm. The OPP are sure to be visitors. Looking forward to another memorable evening, with the new deck making it that much more comfortable! TENNIS The tennis program last week was busy once again. Junior classes were well attended and many players were out on the courts taking advantage of the fine weather. For the coming weeks, tennis classes are filling up fast but there are always openings available for kids clinics and private lessons. This week is also the first Sailing/Tennis Combination week, which promises to be a sell-out. We have two tournaments coming up later in the week. First, the Junior Club Tennis Championships happens this Wednesday July 20 th starting at 9 am. Secondly, the Ladies Doubles Championships will be held is this coming Sunday, July 24 th, with the start time to be determined. Members can sign up for these events in the tennis lounge. Page 2

Formal thanks will follow for the wonderful committees and the volunteers that make this event such as success year after year. AND it is all because the membership and their guests continue to be so engaged and generous. It was a great event, full of fun. Auctioneer and organizer Ferg Devins deserves a special vote of thanks. To watch him mopping his brow as he remorselessly urged on the bidders was a sight to behold. RACING Racing this weekend was twofold... the team was at the Zig- Zag YC Open in Clearwater Bay. The RLWYC cleaned up on the podium: in the Open class, the top three sailors, all sailing Laser Radials, were Andrew Fast (1 st ), James Tory (2 nd ) and Matthew Tory (3 rd ). In the Opti class, the races were won by Edward Parkhill, followed by Geoffrey Konantz and Bryce Kristjansson. At the Club, the races were for the Mathewson Cup, the Club's oldest trophy dedicated in Once again, the winning skipper was Don Konantz with crew Jeff Gill, Rod Nicolls and Evan Zanz. Page 3

4 LADIES LUNCHEON What to wear, what to wear?! The Ladies Luncheon is just around the corner! A little black dress and gloves definitely don't work in this hot weather - but the 'spirit' of our "Breakfast at Tiffany's" inspired luncheon and fashion show can be easily achieved with pretty dresses of any kind! We have many gorgeous auction items and the local retailers are excited to show off the latest and greatest in summer fashions. This year's luncheon will share a portion of our proceeds with women who are much less fortunate, living in crisis through transitional housing and guidance at Sakaate House. Bring it on for both the RLWYC as well as our summer community. Half the room is already sold out, ladies, so please sign up on the Members bulletin board or phone Anna at the Club to get your tickets. CALL NOW. Looking forward to a fabulous luncheon on the lake! The artists were under the guidance of Bill Andrews, an instructor in the Bob Ross method of painting which ensures that everyone goes home with a completed work and a sense of accomplishment. Although all paint the same picture, by the end of the day the artist s individual vision gave each painting a unique touch. Many thanks to Chef Dan for a delicious lunch, to Sarah for her help setting up and to Betty McGarry for organizing the event once again. And thanks of course Bill and his wife Evelyn who make the trip from Neepawa to bring out the Monet in us. Page 5

6 POWER SQUADRON 2011 What has 88 legs, 440 fingers, travels 147 km over 6 hours & needs 11 boats to get around?. the adventurers of the 2011 RLWYC Power Squadron! Another glorious day out on the Lake, with a welcome breeze generated by a 25mph cruise! The flotilla left the RLWYC under the expert guidance of Joe Banfield, towards the Hades, south through French Narrows and east to Long Bay. There they entered the beautifully clear waters of Whitefish Bay. As we rounded the corner at Rendezvous Point, the wash from our boats turned stark white; clear evidence of a sudden change in water quality. Whitefish Bay averages depths of 165 and is not fed by the same sources as LOTW. Instead, it is fed by several overland streams which provide land drainage for thousands of acres of non-farm land in southern Ontario. As such, its waters are crystal clear and free of the phosphates that contribute to algae blooms in the rest of the lake. Welcome to Darren Thiessen & family; Dave & Linda Moll & family; April Wright & her co-captain; Tony & Honey Jones with family & friends; Martin & Ellen Brodigan; and Liz & Geills Turner who all joined us for the first time! This year s recipient of the coveted Motorvator Award goes to April Wright! April s oil injection system ran virtually dry. Had it not been for Smurf (in red shirt, right) and his crew of fishermen passing by, this most certainly would have resulted in a tow home. Suzie Lount gets an honorable mention for running low on gas and having to top up, but she had the extra petrol onboard and thus ducked having to wear the label for the year! Join the Power Squadron next year, when Joe plans to visit POW camps and shipwrecks and to investigate secluded nooks & crannies of the LOTW. UPDATE: STEP INTO ACTION RLWYC Member Dr. Riley Senft has just finished a busy week of running. He was joined by family and friends as he ran through Toronto July 9 th, complete with a police escort. Through TV, radio and print interviews, he was able to spread the word that awareness and early detection of prostate cancer can save lives. Riley reached Sudbury on Sunday, July 17 th. He is still running 50km a day and battling tremendous heat and humidity through Ontario, always with new blisters. Riley hopes to reach Kenora on August 19 th or 20 th. Ontario is indeed a huge province! We hope members of the Kenora community and RLWYC will run with him as he enters the city. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the time. New photos and blog entries are up on the site: stepintoaction.ca. Thank you for your support! Page 6
