1 R July 23, 2018 OYAL L AKE OF THE WOODS YACHT CLUB CLUB NEWS We are in full swing and into Week 4 of the 2018 Season. The most challenging position to hire for every year is a Chef. Try to find one who is content to cook short order chicken fingers during the day and capable enough to pull of dinner for 500 at the dance. The executive decided last year the best things to do was simply not hire one! Instead, we contracted professional chefs for each of our major events including the Fish Fry (Chad Gropp), Club Dinners (Mark Wrigley), the Dance (Gerry Ellis), weddings (901 Westside & Chad Gropp) and the hospital dinner (Rob Thomas). Whew! Glad we did since the cook we hired to cover the canteen and some other basic preparation has left his position! Rest assured all of our major events are business as usual. There will be an impact in the canteen and a few other areas which we are working through with a number of amazing staff and members who are stepping up to help out. Please be patient with us! Club staff try really hard to deliver quality experiences, food service and programs to our membership and to accomplish that effectively requires advance preparation. Late registrations for programs and events are very difficultto manage. You may feel like you are the only one trying to sneak in after a deadline or ask for a special exception but you aren t! The executive are working through the kinks on our end and training our young staff to deliver the best possible experience to everyone. Please do your part by signing up on time! It really does help. Coming up this week is the Richardson Regatta combined with the Opti Provincial Championships which we are proud to host. Fitness classes have been overflowing and don t forget to try out Marta s Pilates clases on Thursday & Friday at 10:30. They aren t on the printed calendar but are on every week. Enjoy the week! CLUB DINNER It s Tequila Thursday! Join hosts Laurie Bonten & Marty & Michelle Weinberg for a Mexican feast catered by Chef Mark Wrigley. Attendance is capped at 100 and reservations MUST BE MADE BY NOON TODAY. Late registrations cannot be accepted. We had a great day and raised $ for the club!! We also created the biggest act of Re-use and Repurpose of goods on the lake and for that we should be very proud!! Thank you to the Verandah Sale volunteers who are a special group, happily giving up precious lake time to set up, sell and clean up the unclaimed treasures! Many of this group will now loaded the club pontoon boat and transport the leftovers to Keewatin! Those fellows were: Nick Logan, Jim Ashdown, Jim Paterson, and Blake Murray. Many thanks to Christine Morris and Leney Richardson for their quarter-back skills in the club. Thank you to Jennifer Fast for donation of half-aprons to outfit our many volunteers! Joanne Hill has arranged for the unsold treasures to be donated to various charities in Kenora and she does a great job for us. Not only does she sort all the left overs and distribute what she can, she then runs garage sales and donates the proceeds to local charities in Kenora!! She and her husband also take care of the cost and logistics of getting the truly unsaleable goods to the landfill! Thanks to everyone for a great day!! Christine Skene

Separate race courses for Opti & O Pen Bic and Scow & Open fleet GAGE CUP The Gage Cup races were run on Saturday, with a fleet of eight scows and one 29er.

There was a three-way tie for second place, with Raif Richardson placing second and Sandy Riley placing third on countbacks. More photos HERE.

The winners were Peter Magnus and his mother Wendy, sailing in a Club 420.

Club boats are available to borrow for the Regatta, please book in advance with the Head of Sailing. Separate race courses for Opti & O Pen Bic and Scow & Open fleet GAGE CUP The Gage Cup races were run on Saturday, with a fleet of eight scows and one 29er. Wind conditions were favourable, resulting in three tight-fought races. The overall winner was David Nelson & crew. There was a three-way tie for second place, with Raif Richardson placing second and Sandy Riley placing third on countbacks. More photos HERE. PARENT-CHILD RACE With perfect sailing conditions, seven brave teams entered the annual Parent- Child Race, competing for the Rat Portage Rowing Club Skiff Trophy. The winners were Peter Magnus and his mother Wendy, sailing in a Club 420. In second place, were Raif Richardson and his son Hunter, with Lachlan Aitken and his father Rob in third place. Winners Wendy and Peter Magnus Commodore Bill Parrish, Jamie Paterson, Skipper David Nelson, Michael Nelson & Zach Heino with the Gage Cup Parents are reminded that the sign up deadline for sailing lessons is Friday at 5pm in order to avoid late charges. RACE TEAM Race Team this week offers a variety of options, depending on sailors skill level. Regular Race Team will run Monday to Friday with Geoff & Edward. On Thursday & Friday, there will be an optional Race Camp, with Sail Manitoba Head Coach Shelby Williams and guest coach Andre Gagnon. A number of visiting juniors sailors will be attending the Camp, as a warm-up to the Richardson Regatta on the weekend. Please direct any questions about Race Camp or the Regatta to the Head of Sailing, James Tory.

TENNIS It was another very busy for our tennis program. The quality of tennis is improving each week and we are very proud of our Juniors and their overall progress.

We are very happy to congratulate Ella Kyle and Kale Petersen for winning the u12 tournament, they won all of their matches and played an excellent and close match in the finals against Bobby Wells

They beat Natalie Douglas and Isaac Petersen in a very close 6-4 set, which brought excellent points at the net as well as various swings in momentum.

They defeated Dave Kyle and Catherine Konantz in 6-3 in the finals. We had an overall great tournament where everyone got to play a lot of matches.

4 TENNIS It was another very busy for our tennis program. The quality of tennis is improving each week and we are very proud of our Juniors and their overall progress. The improvement was evident in the Junior s double tournament where we saw excellent rallies and points being played. We are very happy to congratulate Ella Kyle and Kale Petersen for winning the u12 tournament, they won all of their matches and played an excellent and close match in the finals against Bobby Wells and Kingsley Parkhill. We also are elated to congratulate Robbie Scott and Will Newall for winning the u16 tournament. It was also a great week for mixed doubles tennis, as we had brother and sister tandem Matt Vincent and Norah Vincent win the mixed doubles tournament. They defeated Dave Kyle and Catherine Konantz in 6-3 in the finals. We had an overall great tournament where everyone got to play a lot of matches. Lastly, I would like to remind everyone that the Tuesday Ladies mix social tennis sign-up sheet will be posted early on Tuesday morning. Only the first 13 women to show-up will be able to participate. Also, I would like remind parents that your child is not permitted to bring soft drinks on to the tennis court and I encourage them not to drink them 30 minutes before their classes. Please ensure that your child stays hydrated with water and brings sunscreen on to the court. Ron Heifets Tennis Pro The 2018 men's tennis tournament had 24 registered players but due to the inclement weather only 16 showed up. F ortunately the courts remained dry and all games were played with only one minor injury. The teams were all well matched and it came down to a nail biting final between Steve Kroft and his son Alex against Dave Kyle and his partner Rusty Head. Kyle and Rusty were victorious in the best of people enjoyed the luncheon and our thanks go to the staff that jumped in to provide us with our endless supply of fish tacos. THE COUNTDOWN IS ON!!! The 3 Island Swim is just 2 weeks away and the Minnows are getting ready to conquer! The Minnows are the RLWYC swimming team you can be going for the FULL 3K swim, a RELAY or if you would prefer to join the MINNOW BARGE that is great fun as all have the chance to swim as much or as little as they like and all finish! More will follow on the next newsletter. Look for the sign-up sheets that will be posted later in the week. Dance Tickets & Drink Pre-order As of last Friday served tables for the dance were SOLD OUT, one reserved table was left (but that may have been booked over the weekend) and 60 individual tickets remained. Charges for dance tickets will be on this weeks statement of account. If you reserved a full table, your account will be charged for ALL of the tickets unless specific instructions on distribution of charges have been given to the office. Once your tickets are paid for you can collect your wristbands from the office. Drink Tickets ( house wine, beer or spirits ) Are specially priced for the dance at $8.00 each which includes HST & Club Fee And may be used at the dance only. You can pre-order and the tickets will be distributed at check in. Wine Bar A selection of wines by the bottle will be available and a list of available labels will be published in next weeks newsletter. Pre-orders will be distributed at the wine bar.
