To keep this event fun and manageable PLEASE Drop off your donations ONLY between Monday, July 16th and Friday, July 20th during the hours of 9am to 11:30 and 2:00-4:00. It is best to come to the docks near the swim area for easy access to the storage room. No large appliances, TV s or old electronics, Only items in clean & working condition. Furniture or other large items please send a picture and we will post it and try to broker a deal. Childrens books and other items are always a favorite. Send your little ones in with a $5.00 bill and see just how much they can come out with (but hopefully not the stuff you just donated!) It s an earlier than usual start at 5:30. Advance reservations are required so please call the Club today to reserve so we can make sure Chef Mark Wrigley has a plate ready for you! $55 + HST & Club Fee. 2 TENNIS It was a packed week at the club as all of the tennis programs were full. It is great to see the continual progress of all of our young players and we wish them the best of luck in this week s Doubles Tournament which will be on Tuesday July 17th at 3:30pm. Also, the Mixed Doubles Tournament will take place this coming Saturday, July 21st at 9:30am. All the sign-up sheets are inside the club. There will be no adult clinic this coming week due the Junior Doubles Tournament, but there is plenty of space for Triple threat, which is at 11:30am every day, or you can always sign-up with friends for hitting with the pro at 4:30pm each day. We will work on in game strategy as well as technique to be able to help improve your overall game. I want to remind everyone that we have Junior group lessons for 2-8 people each Saturday and Sunday for those players who have completed Pro 1&2 or the Junior Tennis Academy. The lessons will be from 4 to 5:30 pm and the last 45 minutes will be round robin sets till 4 games, where players can implement what they have worked on during the first 45 minutes. I will be giving feedback during the matches to help the players with their in game decision making and all the results will be posted on a weekly basis, as well as a ranking system to keep track of the results. Lastly, we ask that everyone does their best to arrive on time for practices and eat lunch in advance so we can keep an efficient dynamic and flow to all of the practices. Also, make sure to bring water, hats and put on sunscreen in this hot weather. Ron Heifets Tennis Pro GYMKHANA Yesterday morning we had another successful Gymkhana at the club. Over 40 kids came out to participate in various team and individual events and there were even more parents and grandparents out to cheer them on. From swimming races to potato sack races to the new last minute rope crawl, fun was had by all. The events were followed by an epic water balloon fight and a great BBQ put on by the RLWYC kitchen staff. A big shout out to all the kids who participated and the Muskies, who won the team portion of the event, followed closely by the Walleyes in second and a third place tie between the Bears and the Eagles. In terms of the individual events, a big congratulations to our winners. Male winners: 1st - Liam Kyle (Age 10), 2nd place tie between Duncan Johnson (12) & Will McTavish (9). Female winners: 1st - Molly Hendy (12), 2nd - Hudson Bradley (10), 3rd place tie between Henna Simpson (7) & Elli Irving (7). 3 2018 SAILING GALT CUP Amidst high drama on the Yacht Club Stretch, the Galt Cup series of races was run on Saturday. Glorious conditions prevailed for the eight scows, battling increasingly gusty wind conditions. Rob Aitken was the winner, followed by David Nelson and Don Konantz. More photos HERE. Skipper Rob Aitken, alongside crew Reid Anderson, Mark Baird and David Fortner and future crew Lachlan and Xander, accepts the Galt Cup from Vice Commodore Tony Jones PARENT-CHILD RACE The annual parent-child (under 18) race will take place on Sunday July 22 at 1pm, following the Yachtion. Reserve your Club boat soon, with the Head of Sailing, HERE - boats are limited. NO SCOWS ALLOWED. GAGE CUP The Gage Cup races will take place next Saturday, July 21 at 10am. ALL classes of boat are welcome. Club boats may be borrowed for racing, with prior booking with the Head of Sailing, HERE. SAILING INSTRUCTORS Meet your sailing instructors for 2018! If there is an old kayak hanging around your camp that needs a home, the Aquatics group are looking for one so that they can spot open water swimmers. Please Fiona Colegrave RCSwimming@rlwyc.ca National Drowning Prevention Week July 15-21, 2018 The Lifesaving Society designates the third full week in July as National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) to focus community and media attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention. The RLWYC Aquatics Programme is a member of the Lifesaving Society. We would like highlight that swimming is not just fun, but an extremely important skill here at the lake. Please take a moment to read this information and perhaps think again and take advantage of the lessons available at the club for both children and adults. KEY FACTS: The main messages were selected from the major risk factors presented in the Canadian Drowning Report 2017 Edition. Approximately 500 Canadians die in preventable water-related incidents annually. Even one drowning is one too many. Watch me, not your cell phone. Always directly supervise children around the water - if you re not within arms reach, you ve gone too far. Be Boat Smart and Boat Sober. Alcohol consumption is a factor in almost 40% of boating-related fatalities. In most drownings, the victim never intended to go in the water and was often close to safety could you survive a sudden and unexpected fall into the water? Learn to Swim to Survive. Be Water Smart Make smart choices before going into or out on the water. Older but not always wiser - Choose It. Use It. Always wear a Lifejacket or PFD when in a boat. You can save a life, yours and someone else s. Take a learn-to-swim, lifesaving or first aid class today.
