1 R OYAL L AKE OF THE WOODS YACHT CLUB NEWSLETTER, #88 (807) August 3, 2015 COMMODORE S NEWS As we officially welcome mid-summer, I am looking back at a week of extraordinary events and so many people to thank for making it all happen. I won t be a spoiler and reveal any results (you will have to read on for those) but I do want to thank Larry & Carolyn Hursh for organizing the 8 th annual members golf tournament at Kenora Golf Club, Don & Catherine Konantz for organizing and competing in the Three Island Swim on Saturday and of course Seri Blatt and Treena Hastings for their amazing work on the Yacht Club Dance. Supporting it all are Executive Director Linda Biggar, Managers Talia Thomson and Will Konantz, Chef Ian Fast and his crew and a long list of young people, some paid and some volunteer, who dedicate hours of prepping, cleaning, serving, cleaning again, tying, maintaining and assisting all in an effort to provide our members a fantastic Club experience. Thank you to all of you. Although today is a civic holiday, our Club is semi-open for Yoga at 9:15 and 10:45 and the Junior Tennis Tournament is being held. A new Division has been added at the last minute U19 with a start time of 10:30. Come early to register or call Daniel. More details are under the tennis section. The week ahead may be a little quieter as some members wind up their July holidays, but don t worry, a fresh crew who take their holidays in August has just arrived! Daytime activities this week are of course all of our programs (sailing, tennis, swimming, stay n play, soccer, yoga) with a special weekly Stay N Play field trip to Coney Beach on Wednesday afternoon. Weekday evenings have just as much going on. Come out to Family Night on Wednesday, join hosts Theresa Parrish & Jennifer Fast at Thursday Dinner, have a cocktail and dinner at Royal Hour and I know many of you will be supporting the Lake of the Woods Hospital Foundation at the annual fundraising dinner on Saturday. And on the weekend join Motorvator Joe Banfield for the Power Squadron on Saturday, participate as a competitor or spectator at the Angie Ferguson tournament and don t forget to rig your boats for the Kenora Cup race around Coney Island on Sunday. It may be mid-summer, but your Club is still in full swing. Liz Kristjansson Commodore, 2015 Week at a Glance (August 3 August 9) Programming Week 6. No Classes August 3rd. 3 From your Pro I hope everyone had a great long weekend! We have a busy week of tennis starting today with the Junior Tournament. The NEW U19 division begins at 10:30am followed by the U16 and 10 and under divisions starting at1pm. We also have the Angie Ferguson this week on Saturday the 8 th of August, starting at 9am. This is a doubles tournament for juniors 12 and Under and adults over 18. The junior and their adult partner, play doubles against the other junior-adult duos. It is a fun event and should not be taken too seriously, so come out and have a go and promote tennis here at RLWYC. Following the Angie Ferguson Tournament on Sunday August 9th is the Ladies Doubles Championship beginning at 9:30am. Classes are also going great, we have had a solid turnout so far this season. There are still a few great weeks of summer and tennis left, so don't forget to sign your kids up for lessons! Also if you want more individual attention on any technical or tactical aspects of the game, let me know and we can set up a private lesson. In tennis news, Rafael Nadal beat Fabio Fognini to win the Open in Hamburg. Nadal had lost to Fognini twice this year but it goes to show Nadal is always a contender. That is Rafa s47 th ATP World Tour clay-court title. Have a good week! RLWYC tennis team Tennis News Junior Tournament TODAY The Junior Tournament takes place today August 3 rd. THREE divisions to enter: The NEW U19 division will start at 10:30am. 10 and under (Games start at 1pm, please arrive by 12:45pm to check in) U16 (Games start at 1pm, please arrive by 12:45pm to check in) It has come to our attention that the club tennis balls and racquets are being used outside of class times without permission. Racquets have been left out and damaged and many balls have been hit into the bushes and not retrieved. This practice is not sustainable for the tennis program. In the future please enjoy the tennis courts, but we ask that you bring your own racquets and balls. Calling all ladies!! On August 9 th the Ladies Doubles Championship is being held with games starting promptly at 9:30am. Please arrive at 9:15am to check in. Coffee, fruit, and muffins will be served. Cost $10/ person If you need help finding a partner speak to Daniel our Pro. Sign up in the tennis lounge or call the club at Mixed Doubles On August 9 th the Mixed Doubles is scheduled as usual from 11-1pm. For this week courts 3&4 will be used rather than courts 1&2 to accommodate the Ladies Doubles Championships. Looking for a good read? The Ladies Tennis Book Club reading list is attached. August 8 th 9am start time $15 per person to enter ($30/pair) BBQ lunch to follow

RLWYC MEMBERS GOLF TOURNAMENT REPORT The annual Members Golf Tournament took place on Tuesday, July 28 th. Fortified with Tim Horton s coffee and muffins, 27 golfers teed off at the Kenora Golf Club. Gray skies and a light breeze were a welcome relief after the blistering heat of the previous days; even a brief downpour mid game didn t dampen any spirits! The team scramble format remains very popular. Skill competitions on every hole added extra interest and kept the players sharp. Several hours later, we gathered at the Clubhouse for refreshments and a barbeque lunch. The winning team consisted of Graeme Thomson, Sandy Riley, Andrew Coyne and Brad Abbott. Runners up were Mike Riley, Jan Riley, Gord Konantz and Carolyn Hursh. Third place went to the ladies team: Joan Richardson, Theresa Parrish, Alison Ferguson and Pam Hodgson. The Longest Drive Awards went to Don Snider and Theresa Parrish. Many other individual skill prizes were also awarded. Everyone enjoyed the fun and good camaraderie. Our Mulligan Fund enabled us to make a donation of $500 to the Yacht Club. Many thanks to all the golfers who participated!! 6 Gorgeous summer weather greeted swimmers on Saturday morning for the Annual RLWYC three island swim. In 1989, six intrepid swimmers completed the swim from Keewatin Beach to Coney Beach. The swim was moved to the Club in 1990 and has been a fixture of the August long weekend - now in its 27th year. The 11 am start time is popular and attracts over 200 spectators, spotters and swimmers who swim the 3 km distance as individual swimmers or as part of a relay. This is an event for the courageous at your camp. Among the record number of 13 Relay teams, first was the trio of Zoe Weibe, Megan James & Sam Thiessen with an average age of 11 years 8 months. These three young dynamos completed the 3 km distance in 48:18 - the second fastest relay team ever! Check their matching shirts! For the 2nd time, Matt McKay was the first individual swimmer in a blistering 38:42. Second was 14 year old Kyle Thiessen who swam for the first time in 40:08 and rounding out the men s podium was Gord Mason in a time of 43:03.. Among women, Michelle Balcaen was first for the third year in a row with a time of 40:20. Second was Edie Fisher in 42:55 and third was Olivia Olson in 42:56. These are fast times for a three km open water swim with wind, waves and no line on the bottom to guide you. Gone are the simpler times from 1989 when purists made the crossing without goggles and wearing baggy shorts. In fact, to qualify as a three island purist, getting wet in the off-season is discouraged - other than showers The three island swim attracted 20 first timers who braved the waters including Past Commodore Jeff Banfield who completed the swim in 1:14:10. Mike Riley was the youngest-at-heart at age 70. There were 13 swimmers who improved on their last year or previous best swim:. Buzz Grant improved by 0:12 in his 16th swim Sanford Murray improved by 0:36 Catherine Konantz improved from last year by 1:03 (her 23rd swim) Fiona Colegrave improved by 1:08 Michelle Balcaen improved her time from last year by 1:21 Brent Sawchyn improved by 2:24 Derek Senft improved his last year time by 2:26 Gord Mason improved by 2:53 Madeleine Tory improved by 3:06 Olivia Olson improved her time by 4:22 Nicola Tory improved by 4:56 Quinn Richardson improved by 13:02 wow However, Don Konantz was most improved this year. He improved his time from last year from 1:10:30 to 49:02 an improvement of 21:28. It was Don s 20th swim. Some athletes improve their performance by taking drugs Don improved his by stopping taking drugs. The Participation Award was given to Ashleigh Banfield who was spotter for first time swimmer Chris Haynor. When Chris faltered and looked like he might not finish, Ashleigh dove in the water and completed the swim for Chris with endurance, commitment and fidelity - hallmarks of a three island swimmer. Chris & Ashleigh: we ll see you next year! Thank you to Dr. David Kyle who stood by at the Club for medical support; Victoria Konantz and Geoff Konantz who set and took down the course; to Gail Konantz who attended to the registration; to Gord Konantz who handled the timing and results with Elizabeth Turner, Erin Anderson & Commodore Liz Kristjansson; and special thanks Catherine Konantz who provided dozens of home made cookies to the swimmers and their spotters. The Club is considering sending one of Catherine s cookies to a sports science lab to see just what is in them. A new silver trophy was dedicated in 2015 for the swim and now stands proudly in the Club s trophy case. The Three Island Swim trophy is engraved all the historical winners and on the plaque states: three kilometres, three islands, two arms and one strong desire to finish" Thank you to Don & Catherine Konantz who dedicated the trophy. Full results back to 1990 and years of fun pictures can be found on Facebook at "RLWYC three island swim
