It may be too late to sign up but if you are interested see contact information and details later in the newsletter. The Club Dinner White Party for this week is sold out. Names can be added to a wait list. Cocktails start at 6:30. Contact the office or events@rlwyc.ca. There will be no dinner following Royal Hour. Cocktails and appetizers only. The Three Island Swim is on Saturday. See later in the newsletter for all the details. If you have paid for your dance tickets you may collect them from the office. Drink pre-orders will be distributed at the door. Drinks are $8.00 all inclusive. You may also pre-order full bottles of wine for pick up at the wine bar. Contact the office and deadline is Friday at 4:00. TENNIS It was a very busy week again at the Yacht Club, with so many of the programs full. The weather has been great and the progress on the tennis court by our young players has been even better.

We are very proud of her success and continued progress. Keep up the great work!

Anyone dropping in for Tennis/sailing, mini-court 1&2 as well as Pro-court 1&2 will be charged for the week and a fee for signing up late.

2 TENNIS It was a very busy week again at the Yacht Club, with so many of the programs full. The weather has been great and the progress on the tennis court by our young players has been even better. We would like to congratulate Quinn MacTavish for winning a u12 tournament in Winnipeg last week. She was down 5-0 in the first set of the final s before turning it around and coming back to win. We are very proud of her success and continued progress. Keep up the great work! Also, we would like to remind everyone that only Triple-Threat, the Adult Clinic and the Junior Tennis Academy are available for drop-in. Anyone dropping in for Tennis/sailing, mini-court 1&2 as well as Pro-court 1&2 will be charged for the week and a fee for signing up late. Drop-in s for these lessons affect the lesson plan so please sign-up in advance. Lastly, week 6 will be a very busy week with tournaments such as the Junior Singles on the 6th, the Ladies Doubles on the 7th as well as the Angie Ferguson on the 11th of August. All the sign-up sheets will be posted inside the club house in the tennis section. SAILING KENORA CUP The fabled Kenora Cup will be held on Monday August 6, with a Skippers Meeting at 10am. Open to ALL CLASSES of boat, the route is a circumnavigation of Coney Island, starting and finishing in front of the RLWYC. Club boats are available to borrow with advance booking. LOWISA: DISCOVER KENORA CUP LOWISA 53 will kick off on Sunday August 5, with the Discover Kenora Cup, a 19 nautical mile race commencing at the Harbourfront in Kenora. Registration fees are payable. Click HERE for more info. Parents are reminded that the cut off deadline for lesson registration is Friday at 5pm, in order to avoid late charges.

3 RICHARDSON REGATTA The 15th Annual Richardson Regatta was held this past weekend, also encompassing Opti Provincials. A total of 43 boats, with over 80 sailors, registered for the event: 8 O pen Bics and 5 Optis on the smaller course; and 9 scows, 7 Laser Radials, 4 Lasers, 3 29ers, 2 Argos, 2 Bytes and on the main course. Despite a meticulously-planned and well-executed event, the wind gods were not in our favour for the two day Regatta. Very light winds resulted in only two completed races on the main course and three for the smaller boats. Nevertheless, a great time was had by all! Many thanks to all those on the organising committee, headed by Jim Richardson and Graeme & Sara Thomson; the Race Committees, headed by Jamie Paterson & Jim Paterson and Blair & Wendy Magnus; Sail Manitoba; the billet hosts; Christine & her crew for endless platters of delicious food; the RLWYC staff; and numerous volunteers. In 1989, six intrepid swimmers decided to swim from Keewatin Beach to Coney Beach. This was a simpler time: no training; the participants wore baggy shorts and certainly no swimming goggles.

So in 1990 when the swimmers re-convened with a few foolish friends, they did so at the Yacht Club for a swim around Kalamalka, Gourley and the Yacht Club Island. Hence the name: three island swim.

For those who enjoy the social aspects of this event, there is the relay category where three swimmers each complete one leg of the 3 km course.

There are lots of awards: for our wonderful Minnows who will swim from the Minnow-barge as well as top three male and female swimmers, Best Rookie, Most Improved and the coveted Participation Award

So in 1990 when the swimmers re-convened with a few foolish friends, they did so at the Yacht Club for a swim around Kalamalka, Gourley and the Yacht Club Island. Hence the name: three island swim. The swim course has remained the same since that second swim. At 3 km, the event is a true test of the more confident individual at your camp. For those who enjoy the social aspects of this event, there is the relay category where three swimmers each complete one leg of the 3 km course. All participants are required to be members or guest of members of the Yacht Club. You will need a spotter in a non-motorized boat to watch over your health and welfare during the swim. There are lots of awards: for our wonderful Minnows who will swim from the Minnow-barge as well as top three male and female swimmers, Best Rookie, Most Improved and the coveted Participation Award for spirit and event contribution. This swim has been completed by three 11-year olds and one or two 60+ year olds. Make sure there is at least one participant from your camp. The event - now in it s 30th year - starts Saturday at 11 am. Registration opens at 9:30 am, 10:00 am for Minnows, for a three-person relay or completing the swim yourself. If you want to get on a relay and cannot find anyone, just show up on Saturday morning. Remember that a lack of training, baggy shorts and no goggles are the hallmark of a three island purist. Bring a spotter with a non-motorized boat. The Plaza comes to Yacht Club Island Join hosts Bill & Eleanor Kyle and their family and friends for a Greek-style dinner at the club, prepared by Tina Adamopoulos of Kenora s Plaza Resaurant. Cocktails 5:30, Dinner 6:30. Feel free to Greek It Up anyway you see fit - wear a toga if you like! - or just come as you are! Members may bring guests To register contact Larry Hursh larry.hursh@me.com Carolyn Hursh carolyn.hursh@jrsl.ca RLWYC Cycle Kenora About 15 years ago, Gord and Gail Konantz from Allans Island, along with Mike Nesbitt from Survey Island, looking for some offisland exercise, decided to take their bicycles into Kenora. After some experimentation, they discovered a route past Rabbit Lake and to the Kenora Airport. The airport is the high point. From there, they wound down Jones road, past the Weyerhauser Plant to Hwy 17, then back the the starting point at the Main St dock, a ride of some 33 km. Over the years, the group has expanded and, as it grew to include younger and younger cyclists, Mike, Gord, and Gail took to calling themselves The Octos as they reached their 80 s. The loss of Gail this year has put a big hole in our tribe but Gord and Mike are still going strong and the ride last week counted 28 riders of all ages. Gail would have loved that. Many of the riders sport RLWYC cycling jerseys (see Arthur Fast) while Gord and Mike have special Octo shirts with the route outlined on the back.
