1 R SUMMER NEWSLETTER, #42 July 30, 2012 COMMODORES NEWS Dave Rattray, who has been consumed this week with fixing the septic system at the Club (It WILL be ready for the Dance) is taking a break this week to allow his Co-Commodore to write the weekly message to our members. What a week it has been! The Richardson Regatta had over 50 boats participating in the MSA Race Camp and two day competition. The racing was exciting, particularly in the Laser Class, which had competitors from as far away as Alberta, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. It was inspirational to see so many boats in the Yacht Club stretch at one time, with sailors of ALL ages. Special thanks to Liz Kristjansson, Gia Gill, Chef Dan, Jim Richardson, Graeme & Sara Thomson and all the volunteers who made the event so special. It is important to remember our heritage as the Royal Lake of the Woods YACHT Club, which is why this weekend's regatta was so significant. Just a reminder to everyone that next week the Kenora Cup race around Coney Island will be sailed on Sunday at 11:00 am, not 1:00 pm as posted in the calendar. Thank you to Larry & Carolyn Hursh who hosted the member golf tournament last week and the 100+ people who came out and stayed for the most successful Royal Hour & BBQ this year. Please take a moment to admire our new TROPHY CASE, which was installed this week The case is a wonderful addition to our Club and is a gift from the family of the late John Banfield, a former Commodore. Next week we really get to live large at the Club-as if we haven't already! We start with Yoga for Stiff guys on Tuesday. Come join Nick Logan, Gord Konantz, Roger Murray and me as Erin Konantz puts us through our paces. Women are encouraged to come as well. Wednesday s Ladies Luncheon is heating up with a full house of glamorous hats hitting the docks. What better way to kick off August than having our fellow yachtswomen and their guests raise funds for both our Club AND local community as we share the auction proceeds with Kenora's women's shelter, Sakaate House. Special guest Jennifer Broe (Baby Gourmet) will share her Canadian business success story. On Thursday Don Konantz hosts the dinner in honor of those turning 50,as he did this year. It is a hot ticket. Friday's Royal Hour is a great way to start what our family calls Christmas season at the Lake. Come and see who is back for the first time in 10 years or who has new grandchildren. Get an early start on the weekend by coming for drinks and staying for an easy dinner Saturday is the Three Island Swim. Do it once and you can brag for a lifetime. And of course Saturday night is the Dance. Dave has previously mentioned that Bill Wallace will be playing and last played at the Dance 43 years ago. I hesitate to mention that I was at that dance (underage, of course) and remember the group vividly. It was one of our most memorable dances ever and I suspect this year's Dance will be one to remember as well. Tables are gone but a few tickets remain Pray that the fantastic weather holds for another week or two. See you all at the Club this week. 2 Richardson Regatta With over 50 boats and close to 100 sailors the Richardson Regatta was a great success. The wind and weather co-operated and the volunteers & staff of the Club were proud hosts. Our U.S. sailors advised that they will be back next year. Thanks go to everyone involved in organization and participation. Guest coach Kyle Martin from the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club is staying to coach at RLWYC for the rest of the week. Kyle will train our Race Team Lasers & Instructors helping them with strategic racing techniques. Kyle is an Elite Canadian Racer who competes globally. If you are a laser sailor interested in a private lesson with Kyle this week please contact Gia Gill at the Club. 5 RLWYC Dance tickets are ready for pick-up in the office this week. Remember that you must present your ticket for admission. There are a few remaining tickets which will be on sale until Friday, August 3rd at noon. Tickets will NOT be available at the door. PRE-PURCHASE DRINK TICKETS Avoid the line-ups by purchasing your drink tickets in advance! Drink tickets (minimum of 20) may be purchased through the office and will be ready upon check-in at the Dance. GOT YOUR TICKET? NO TICKET = NO ENTRY! Have your picture taken by renowned photographer Tom Thomson and dance the night away with Bill Wallace. Saturday, August 4th 11:00 am All ages and outfits welcome. Spotter required. Contact Don Konantz, dkonantz@telus.net, to register In 1989, six intrepid swimmers decided to swim from Keewatin Beach to Coney Beach. This was a simpler time. There was certainly no training and the participants wore baggy shorts and certainly no swimming goggles. The early route crossed the float plane runway, and two channels so in 1990 when the swimmers re-convened with a few foolish friends, they did so at the Yacht Club for a swim around Kalamalka, Gourley and the Yacht Club Island. Hence the name: three island swim. The swim course has remained the same since that second swim. At 3 km, the event is a true test of the more confident individual at your camp. For those who enjoy the social aspects of this event, there is the relay category where three swimmers each complete one leg of the 3 km course. All participants are required to have a spotter (strongly preferred in a non-motorized boat) to watch over their health and welfare. On wavy days, when it's one breath of air and one breath of water, it is nice to have a trusty spotter ever-present to guide the way and be available for quick rescue. The course record is held by Stuart Starkey at 33:15 and Stuart has won the event 6 times - every time he has entered. For those who swim, or watch the Olympics, this is a remarkable time. Nobody else has been in the 30's. Other notables are Larry Kyle - a 5 time winner and Robert Bulman - a 4 time winner. On the women's side, Catherine Konantz has entered the event 16 times, not including her participation as a 1989 founding swimmer. During seven of these years, she has posted the fastest women's time. Carolyn Hutchins has won the event four times including a string of 2004, 2005 and The event attracts the young and young at heart. Roger Murray last finished the swim at the age of 67 and there are some strong year olds who have finished the course. Awards are given for the top three male and female swimmers as well as Best Rookie, Most Improved and the coveted Participation Award for spirit and event contribution. The course is always finished by a resounding sound of the Yacht Club bell and swimmers are met with well earned snacks of fresh fruit, muffins and cookies. Page 5

And mark your calendar for Thursday, August 16th with special guests Joanne and John Hill who recently sold Two Bears Marina in Keewatin. The new Trophy Case has been installed and looks beautiful. Finishing touches with labels for all the trophies are still to come. Many thanks to the family of former Commodore, the late John Banfield for this lovely gift and to House Master Fred Wright for getting the job done. Congratulations! The 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games were held last week. Congratulations to RLWYC member Edward Parkhill, who won the Gold Medal for the Male 14 and under category. It was a Parkhill landslide with Caroline Parkhill, sixth overall and Olivia Parkhill, seventh both sailing in the Laser 4.7, age 17 and under fleet.
