1 R OYAL LAKE OF THE WOODS YACHT CLUB SUMMER NEWSLETTER, #19 26 th July 2010 BUSY TIMES FOR ALL COMMODORE S NEWS It was quite a week! Four days of Opti Provincials and Boot Camp that had our instructors and young sailors at full stretch; a big wedding reception; three tennis tournaments; the Kenora Cup; and the Gymkhana. These were highlight s of a busy week- there was something for everyone. We were delighted to host Major Len Compton and his wife Sandy on Sunday, as reported separately, to present the Kenora Cup. We believe that this is a first for his office in many years. He was particularly welcome as the numbers of Kenora-based Members continues to increase and our policy of inclusiveness should be highlighted accordingly. Another big week is ahead, with the Dance as its highlight. That will certainly be a sell out! THE YACHTION A big thank you and apology to the following Yachtion donors whose names were inadvertently omitted last week: Blue Heron/ Sunset Galleries Boston Pizza Canada Safeway Casey's Restaurant Consumers Frosted Foods Kathy & Ferg Devins Docks & Lifts Johnson's Pharmacy Bob Kozminski Keystone Ford K Sports Erica Mclaughlin Lake of the Woods Museum Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. MS Kenora North American Lumber Nuttall Boating Safety Bob and Daisy Pastrick- A&R Carpet Rob and Penny Richards Holly and Doug Wells Tammy Zebruck LADIES LUNCHEON & FASHION SHOW The Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show is fast approaching on Wednesday, July 28th at 12pm. There will also be a fabulous Silent Auction offering jewelry, designer clothes, gift baskets and more! Tickets are $45. Sign up on the Club noticeboard or call Anna in the office at Don t delay, this event is almost sold out! TEEN TOONIE MOVIE NIGHT Last Tuesday's bonfire was a hit despite the damp wood from the day's rain. Twenty teens showed up to swim, feast on s'mores and capture the flag. This Tuesday July 27 th, the 14+ Socials at the Club will continue with Tuesday Toonie Movie Night, 8-11pm. Refreshments and popcorn are included with your Toonie. The movie selection will be made on the day. Please bring a bathing suit. Due to content, please no youngsters (i.e.12 and under). To sign up please call Ally Banfield ; David Landell ; Leigh Sawchyn or sign up at the Club.

2 TENNIS NEWS Many thanks to Jan Fletcher and Connie Ashdown for organizing a really fun tournament, during Women s tennis last Tuesday. The tennis was great and the appetizers amazing! Ladies tennis continues, on Tuesday mornings between noon throughout August, so please come and join in. Also, many thanks to Lorne Hurst who encouraged a record breaking number of men to play tennis on Friday morning. Their tennis was followed by a delicious lunch on the deck. The Junior Club Championships took place on Saturday morning, with an amazing turnout for both the under 16 and the under 10 categories. There were some very exciting matches in both age groups which were wonderful to watch. Congratulations to Trace Brinkman (far right) who won the Under 16 s, and Ben Rankin, the runner up. Also, congratulations to Niels Hurst (left), winner of the Under 10 s and to Amelia Fauth, the runner up. On Sunday the Ladies Doubles Championship were held in the blistering heat. 13 pairs competed for the cup, with Theresa Parrish & Shelagh Hare the winners in an epic match against Catherine Konantz & Alex Sawchyn. Many thanks to our three tennis coaches, for running both the Junior and Ladies tournaments so smoothly. TROPHIES Over the winter the majority of the club's historic trophies were refurbished. Many were given new bases as the old ones were totally overloaded and beaten up. The new bases start with the names from 2003, the Club s second century! The old bases represent a very important piece of the Club's history and are being preserved at the Club although not on display. The names on these are recorded in a book which is on display outside the tennis lounge, and available to members. We have a surplus of fine trophies from our sailing heritage with several cups not having been awarded for many years. A complete inventory check and list of trophies now to be awarded has been done. The Konantz Cup, as previously advised, has been resurrected for the first sailing race of the summer and the Nanton Cup, the Club's finest is now awarded to the annual Scow series winner. Other sailing trophies to be awarded at the ceremony on August 15th are largely unchanged. Four trophies have been assigned to tennis competitions. The Aldous Cup for the Mixed tennis Championship; the Lake of the Woods YC Cup for the Junior Under 16 Championship; the Bradburn Cup for the Jr Under 10 Championship; and the Mather Cup for the Jr Under 16 Championship. The two old, rather special Rat Portage Rowing Club trophies have been retired and are simply exhibited at the Club, as is the Frank Matthewson Cup. These will be given new bases this winter. 26 July 2010 Page 2

5 YACHT CLUB DANCE The Yacht Club dance is approaching rapidly! Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 31 st for dinner and dancing to the sounds of Tooth & Nail. Remember tickets will NOT be available at the door and reserved tables are LIMITED so contact the Club now for your tickets. New this year, we will be offering a complimentary Safe Ride Home program for those guests within the area requiring transportation home at the end of the evening. Please call Betty Nelson on with inquiries. Contact Anna Percy, anna.percy.rlwyc.ca or to purchase tickets ($75 each). For all members interested in receiving a partial tax receipt for their ticket purchase, please contact Betty Nelson in the office. Please note that the staff at the Club request your patience with the post-dance cleanup as neither the garbage nor the rentals will be picked up immediately. Also, please remember that Court #1 will be unavailable for play on Sunday & Monday and for much of Saturday too. We cannot do everything with our limited facility and location! SOCCER The soccer pitch on Coney Island has been busy on Monday and Thursday evenings. Last Monday, the Commodore refereed a tightly contested match with over 20 players ranging in age from 12 to 45! Adults are encouraged to join the kids in these spirited games, but be warned they will be given a severe run-around (Fred Abbott can advise). The games on Thursdays have children ages 4 through 11 competing on three different pitches. One pitch is for beginners, the second pitch is for the keen 6 & 7 year olds and the third is open to those kids looking for a competitive challenge. The last few weeks we have had an average of 30 children in attendance and having a lot of fun! Thanks to all parents who help with the snacks, coaching and refereeing. SCOW FOR SALE Fully restored wooden 1963 Melges E-Scow The boat had $13,000 worth of work done on it in 2009, including a new canvas deck, complete wood refinishing. All the deck rigging (blocks, tracks, etc.) were replaced with top of the line Harken rigging. New lines, three sets of sails and new flotation panels (one set of sails is new, barely used), new bailers. Comes with a good trailer with working electrical, full wraparound Melges boat cover, spars are all in great shape. The boat also comes with old documentation from its previous owners. The boat is in perfect condition and needs no work at all. It is currently at the West Landing at the Club, so feel free to check it out! Asking $12,000. 6 GYMKHANA Over 75 children, aged 4-12, participated in the fun & games on a sunny Sunday morning. Congratulations to the overall winner, Madison Chambers. Full race results are posted at the Club and at the end of this Newsletter. Many thanks to Rina Zweig and Carol Anne Parkhill for organising this year s event. THREE ISLAND SWIM This Saturday it is the 22nd annual Three Island Swim. The course circumnavigates Kalamalka, Gourley and Yacht Club Islands. At 3 km, the event is a true test of the more confident individual at your camp. For those who enjoy the social aspects of this event, there is the relay category where three swimmers each complete roughly 1,000m. All participants are required to have a spotter (strongly preferred in a non-motorized boat) to watch over their health and welfare. A complete listing of the annual 3 Island Swim results can be found on the Club s website. The course is always finished by the resounding sound of the Yacht Club bell and swimmers are met with well earned snacks of fresh fruit, muffins and cookies and a multitude of awards. For more information contact Don Konantz at TIPPING AT THE CLUB Most Members will now be aware that a 15% gratuity is added to all sit down dinner and lunch bills. Many Members are unclear about tips for the boat boys/girls. Any gratuity you may choose to give to them is gratefully received, but optional. Tips are pooled and shared amongst them at the end of each evening. There is no need to give a gratuity both on arrival and departure. WELCOME A warm welcome to new Members Greg & Linda Bowman. LoW MUSEUM: MAP TALKS Members are reminded that the Museum is hosting a series of talks on map making in the LOW area. Note the revised start time of 7pm. Thursday, July 29, 7pm: David Malaher speaking on The History of Mapping Lake of the Woods Thursday, August 5, 7pm: Merv Ahrens speaking on The Back Road between Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake 26 July 2010 Page 5

A big thank you to BC Douglas who took the boat boys home safely in mid-tempest. This week we have another special featuring anyone who is celebrating a new decade. Ted & Kesia Parkhill, Tara Brousseau and Don Snider will be hosts as David Rattray is unable to do so. (You may guess who is in a new decade!) Don t forget to register with Anna in the office. The evening is open to all Members and their guests, as well as friends of the Parkhills and the Rattrays. ROYAL WEAR In addition to SailorBag s line of totes and duffel bags, Royal Wear is pleased to offer a 12 pack cooler bag.
