With over 350 in attendance, 200 staying for dinner and an ill timed power outage the Commodore s Reception & Canada Day Dinner put our staff to the test and they rose to the occasion. USA Today recently ranked Lake of the Woods the number one cottage destination in Canada. Damn! It s supposed to be a secret!! But it is true and beautifully depicted in two documentaries produced by Greg Lowe. Greg passed away recently and was well known by our membership. His colleague in the production, Sean Kavanagh, as a tribute to Greg will be offering a screening of the documentaries at Royal Hour this Friday and available to talk about the filming. It appears the summer weather has finally arrived and the Club is now in full swing. Remember that summer seems to go faster every year so don t put off signing up for all of your favorite events starting with Club Dinner this Thursday (check out that menu!), Painting with Pippi on Friday and the Gymkhana is this Sunday. In a few weeks our premiere fundraising event, the Yachtion, will take place. We have a great line up already but are looking for more unique experiences we can add. If you have any ideas, or if you have a picture that is just too good not to share with the membership, please send them along! 2 TENNIS NEWS Hi Everyone! The tennis season is upon us and I am looking forward to getting on the tennis court and teaching our students. I m very happy that we have so many students registered for the first week of lessons. There are still some spaces available spots for the second week in Mini-Court 1&2, Pro-Court 1&2 as well Tennis Mania, so make sure to register your kids! Also don t forget to drop by for Triple-Threat at 11:30 each day and for our Adult Clinics on Tuesday s from 2:30 to 3:30. In other news, I am very excited to announce that we will be introducing a Box Ladder at RLWYC, commencing in mid-july for men singles. We will introduce a woman s singles and/or doubles as well as mixed doubles Box Ladder upon demand. There will be a sign-up sheet with all the rules and information on the display in the club. Everyone is welcome to participate and no one will be turned away. Don t forget - the tournaments: - Junior Doubles tournament on July 18th starting at 3:30 - Men s doubles tennis tournament and lunch on July 21st, starting at 9am Lastly, the tennis Wimbledon championships will begin this Monday. On the men s side, for the first time in a while, Murray, Djokovic, Federer and Nadal are the top 4 seeds in a major slam. Murray has struggled through out the whole season and will look to regain his form and defend his title. Djokovic is slowly starting to regain his form after a difficult start to 2017 and is coming off an impressive week in which he won the Aegon International. As for Federer and Nadal, both are entering Wimbledon on a very high note and look poised to maintain their grandslam success in Also, we can t forget about Milos Raonic! He is finally healthy and will look to build on his success last year, when he made it all the way to the finals. This year he will be joined by another canadien phenom, Denis Shapavalov from Ontario, in the main draw. Shapavalov,18, will be the youngest player in the men s draw and was the Junior Wimbledon champion back in On the women s side, with no Serena Williams or Maria Sharapova participating, the draw is wide open and should make for a very interesting two weeks. 3 Sailing News The sailing season has launched! We had eight scows on the starting line, which Gord Konantz assures us is the most since he started shaving! This augers well for getting good fleets out for each race as there were a few regulars that were not able to make the first race, perhaps we could have as many as 11 scows racing. It was also gratifying to see the number of young sailors racing and doing well, the winning boat had a 14 year old flying the kite! The regatta was held in light air which was probably just as well so we could all shake the spiders out of our sails, correct our rigging errors and get used to a new season on these technical and challenging boats. The wind did build during the day and the final race saw crews on the windward rail balancing the boats on the knife edge between speed and danger. The races all had exciting starts, many lead changes, shifts that turned heroes into losers and vice versa! No lead was safe until the final whistle.. Rob Aitken in RL 2 won the first two races with Don Konantz coming second in both in RL 1, perhaps Rob did not get the memo that 1 is supposed to come before 2! The third races was won by David Nelson with Raif Richardson in second place followed by Don Konantz. Rob Aitken decided to make things interesting by finishing 5th, narrowly edging out Jim Richardson on corrected time. This put him in a tie for the lowest points in the regatta with Don Konantz. The tie breaker reverts back to the scow that had the most recent first place result, tipping the result in Rob's favour. The racing was very competitive with all scows being at or near the front of the fleet during the day. With a bigger fleet, there were many port/starboard crossings as well as some incredible mark roundings. We welcome the new scows of Jim and Melanie Borger and David Nelson, some reallocated scows driven by Steve Wells, old stalwarts like Sandy Riley and Jim Richardson and we anticipate the return of Gestur Kristjannson and Lorne Hurst as well as Ted Parkhill. Great racing and lots of fun, thanks to all who came out and thanks to James Tory and his race committee for running a great race. It's going to be great season! See you on the water, Rod Nicolls
