4 What is Physical Literacy? Physical Literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life in any environment. The objective of undertaking a physical literacy directive at the YMCA is to increase the movement vocabulary in our participants. An increased movement vocabulary of an individual is related to a greater chance for success and confidence in a variety of sport and recreational activities. Our goal is to teach kids fundamental movement and sport skills like how to throw, catch, run and move with the goal of giving them the capacities and confidence to participate in activity for life! Why is Physical Literacy Important? Child hood obesity and inactivity is on the rise. A lack of physical literacy in today s youth has contributed to the childhood obesity epidemic. In Canada, fewer than half our children and youth are active enough to ensure healthy growth and development. Even scarier, the percentage of youth that are meeting physical activity requirements decreases dramatically in pre-teen and teenage years as social pressure can make someone who is not confident retreat from participating to avoid embarrassment. YMCA Physical Literacy programs aim to help children learn the Fundamental Movement Skills that are the base of all other human movement to keep them on track or help them catch up with their peers. We do this by providing a safe environment where all children feel comfortable learning/developing skills to build their physical literacy vocabulary through fun games and positive social interactions. While Physical Literacy Classes specifically target this area, it is important to note that physical literacy is also seen in many of our youth, aquatics and child care programs. Novice and experienced youth are welcome. Because this is a multisport activity, cross-training is built in and the participants will be provided variety, balance, and gain overall fitness. Also, it will provide confidence for youth that may be interested in participating in local youth-oriented multisport events (e.g. the YMCA Y-Kids-Tri event in July). Regina Marlins Swim Club Based at the Regina YMCA, the Regina Marlins swim club provides professional coaching to swimmers from 4 years to postsecondary. Our coaches work with our swimmers in small groups, helping them to set and achieve their personal fitness and swimming goals. Our team offers an environment of fun, fitness and friendship. Mini Marlins: Boys and girls as young as 4 years old progress quickly in our Mini Marlins program. Mini Marlins have lots of fun while developing skills and endurance. As they progress through three levels of Mini Marlins, swimmers will learn the four basic strokes as well as starts and turns. Competitive Program: For swimmers who are 7 years up to postsecondary, we offer a high quality competitive speed swimming program. Swimmers progress through our White, Blue, Red and Senior competitive groups. Competitive swimmers attend developmental swim meets throughout the province and may attend invitational and championship meets throughout Canada. Non-Competitive Program: This program is designed for swimmers who want to stay involved in swimming and work on fitness and endurance. It is a great option for cross-training with other sports, such as hockey, triathlon, gymnastics, or dance. It can also complement swimming lessons or life-saving courses by providing additional opportunities to develop strength and endurance. Speed swimming develops strength and endurance, and skill. It is a great way to improve fitness while having fun. Swimming provides a low impact, aerobic workout for your whole body. Moving through the water provides resistance training, which strengthens and tones muscles. We have operated successfully in Regina since 1967 and are affiliated with Swim Saskatchewan and Swimming Canada. More information about the Marlins is available by contacting coach@reginamarlins.com, visiting our website at reginamarlins.com or calling
