11 PHYSICAL LITERACY AT THE YMCA The objective of undertaking a physical literacy directive at the YMCA is to increase the movement vocabulary in our participants. An increased movement vocabulary of an individual is related to a greater chance for success and confidence in a variety of sport and recreational activities. Our goal is to equip participants with a transferable set of skills to participate in sport and recreation for life. Ultimately we want robust participants which we consider to be strong, healthy and vigorous, or able to withstand or overcome adverse conditions. While the Physical Literacy Classes specifically target this area, it is important to note that physical literacy is also seen in many of our youth and child care programs. Our Physical Literacy Classes will cover: Fundamental Human Movements (Squat, Hang, Lift, Push...) Fundamental Sport Skills (Run, Balance, Throw, Catch...) Fundamental Gymnastics (Shapes, Levers, Inversions, Somersaults...) Toddler Physical Literacy Classes (walking - 2 years) - Parented This parented, toddler class focuses on building a child s movement vocabulary. Classes introduce the pillars of a complete movement practice that will gradually build into sequences and patterns. A vocabulary of Key movements will include running, changing direction, hanging from a bar, and basic tumbling to introduce spatial awareness. Running, Stopping, Changing Direction Rolling, Somersaults, Quadruped movements Hanging Squatting Throwing, Kicking Saturdays 9:00 am - 9:55 am East Preschool Physical Literacy Classes (Ages 3-5) Preschool classes focus on building a child s movement vocabulary. Classes introduce the pillars of a complete movement practice that will gradually build into sequences and patterns. A vocabulary of Key movements will include running, changing direction, hanging from a bar, and basic tumbling to introduce spatial awareness. Children will also learn the social skills necessary to work independent of their parents within a group of their peers; Parents are not out on the floor with their children but can watch classes within in the area. Running, Stopping, Changing Direction Rolling, Somersaults, Quadruped movements Hanging Squatting Throwing, Kicking Mondays 5:30 pm - 6:25 pm East Saturdays 10:00 am - 10:55 am East Kids Level I Physical Literacy Classes (Ages 6-11) Continue a child s movement endeavours with movement foundations for a better Long Term Athletic Development. Whether your child is in sport already or simply looking to increase their movement repertoire, this class will provide a user manual for children to learn about their bodies and develop a sense of physical literacy. Research is becoming more conclusive that engaging a young athlete into many movement endeavours in this age group has favorable effects on performance, attitude and longevity in sport rather than specializing too early. Hanging, Climbing, introduction into Brachiating(Swinging) Running, throwing, Jumping, Kicking fundamentals Introduction into bounding and Landing Squatting, Pushing, Pulling, Lunging Fun Obstacle Courses and games Mondays 6:30pm - 7:25pm East Tuesday 6:30pm - 7:25pm Northwest Saturdays 11:00am - 11:55am East Saturdays 11:15am - 12:10pm Downtown Saturday 12:00pm - 12:55pm Northwest Kids Level II Physical Literacy Classes (Ages 6-11) A continuation from the skills introduced in Kids Level I. Youth enrolled in Level 2 will be challenged further by adding more variations to build on the skills they have previously learned and a chance to become more competent and confident in their movements. To be successful in Level II, Youth should have experience with the skills listed in the Level I Class Hanging, Climbing, Brachiating(Swinging) Running, throwing, Jumping, Kicking Bounding and Landing Squatting, Pushing, Pulling, Lunging Fun Obstacle Courses and games Mondays 7:30pm - 8:30pm East Wednesdays 7:30pm - 8:30pm East Teen Ninja Warrior Class (Ages 12-21) This class will focus on the Athlete s ability to overcome any obstacle by adapting one s movement to the ever changing courses. Class will begin with basic Gymnastics fundamentals and shapes including Levers and Handstands. The Strength portion prepares the body for moving in a controlled way through beginner to intermediate level obstacle courses. Competitions will be held biannually to challenge for the title of Teen Ninja Warrior. Hanging, Climbing, Brachiating, Swinging, Lache Bounding, Landing on platforms, Hurdling Front, Back and Side Levers and Handstands Locomotion, Squatting, Lifting, Pushing and Pulling Intermediate to advanced obstacles Thursdays 7:30-8:25 pm East Girls Physical Literacy Classes (ages 6-11) Empowering young girls to be strong, confident movers is what this class is all about. The programming for this class will include the same skills as the Kids Physical Literacy Classes, but this class will be an all girls environment with a female instructor. Research shows that strong female role models can have a great influence and if girls are not actively engaged in sport by the time they are 10 years of age, they are much more likely to dropout from sport and physical activity in the coming years. Our goal is to foster physical skills in a fun, social environment to develop confident movers who can go on to enjoy any sport or activity. Tuesday 6:30pm - 7:25pm East Girls Athletic Development (ages 12-16) This class for girls will build on the skills learned in Kids and Girls Physical Literacy and expand into Athletic movements as they learn to train for sports. Research shows that strong female role models can have a great influence on girls sticking with sports through adolescence and decrease dropout rates for girls in sport. Active teen ages become active adults! Tuesday 7:30pm - 8:25pm East
