2 Affordable Recreation The City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District work together with a number of agencies to provide affordable recreation opportunities. Leisure Involvement For Everyone (LIFE) This program provides free admissions and discounted rates for recreation programs for individuals and families with low incomes. LIFE members apply once and receive two cards: The Strathcona Regional District Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex. 104 free Drop-In admissions 50% discount on up to three programs. The City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture Community Centre, Sportsplex and Centennial Pool. 52 Free Drop-In admissions 50% discount on up to three registered programs. Quality Foods Rec Bucks This program enables Quality Foods shoppers to redeem their Quality Foods points for Rec Bucks. Simply cash in 200,000 Quality Foods Points for a $20 Rec Bucks voucher, which is redeemable toward programs, admission and rentals at all local recreation centres. JumpStart Ages 4-18 years Jumpstart is a community-based charitable program that helps kids in financial need take part in organized sport and recreation. To request funding, complete an application form, which is available at the Sportsplex or Community Centre. If you require further information regarding the program, call Kidsport Ages 6-18 years So all kids can play! Kidsport is a community-based sport charity that provides grants for children to participate in a recognized sport. Grants are limited to $200 per year, per child and certain restrictions apply. After everyone has gone home and Strathcona Gardens has closed its doors to the public, we invite children to join us for some overnight fun. Drop the kids off for some late night skating, swimming, lazer tag, sports, relay races and games hours of total fun! The weary party goers will wind down to a movie with popcorn and then sleep in one of our activity rooms waking up to a light breakfast all ready for you to pick them up. We will look after your party goers from 8:30 pm until 10:00 am the next morning and can take up to 24 kids. Only room for 24 people per night so be sure to come early and sign in at the front desk. This program is open to all athletes aged 15+ with developmental disabilities. It doesn t matter if you have never played before or even if you aren t a very good skater yet. We will help you work on your skating and hockey skills. We are planning on challenging at least one other diverse ability hockey team to a fun game throughout the season. Sign up this winter for some fun on the ice. Full gear required. when: Tue & Thur Jan 3-mar 16 12:30-1:30pm cost: $125 (22) Skating School Bus (6+) Get a ride to the rink for either a complimentary drop-in skate or for a registered program in either the pool or arena. Participants must bring their own helmet and gloves if they are going to join the public skate or play pond hockey after getting picked up. Registration must be completed by 12:00 noon on the day of desired pick up. Public skate ends at 4:55 pm each day so please make arrangements to have your child picked up by 5pm. No previous skating experience is required for the child or their parent/guardian the emphasis of this program is fun. **Parent & Tot Hockey Lessons: Parents and tots will get a chance to develop both their skating and hockey skills during this program. Lots of fun for all. dash & Splash - Swimming & Skating Lesson Combo - 2 Lessons for 1 great Price: This program combines both activities in one trip to the facility. The first ½ hour is spent on the leisure ice with a skating instructor, parents then have 15 minutes to help their child get changed and head to the pool for a swimming lesson for the last 1/2 hour. great deal And Time SAveR!! ice quest - Learn To Skate Program: These lessons are designed with the beginner in mind! Our six-step program offers an introduction into the world of ice-skating. Please note: Preschool Ice Quest includes a snack and story time each class. ***Little Rascals Hockey: Learn basic hockey skills and play a real hockey game every class! Coaches will introduce your child to the game of hockey through a variety of fun drills. All participants must be able to skate on their own. All Little Rascal participants and their families from the season are invited to the Wrap Up Party on March 16th from 6:00-7:30 pm please register your Little Rascal at the front desk. Bon Temps Sur Patin: "Good times on skates" is our new French Immersion learn to skate preschool program. Develop their language skills while having fun and learning how to skate. **Coolest game on earth intro to Hockey: If you have never played ice hockey this is the program for you. Learn basic hockey skills and have fun. All participants must be able to skate on their own. **Hockey 101: Is your Minor Hockey player craving extra ice time? This popular fast paced after school program includes all aspects of hockey. Passing, shooting, skating, stick handling and organized drills similar to those in practice will help to elevate their game to the next level. This program sells out quickly so don t miss out. Participants must have previous hockey experience for this program. **women s intro to Hockey: The purpose of this program is to introduce women to the basic skills, to make new friends and to try the game without having to make a commitment to the entire season. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice. Private Lessons (all ages welcome): Want to learn how to skate or work on your hockey skills? Private lessons only cost $18.25 per ½ hour and semi-private lessons cost $13.75 per ½ hour per person. All ages welcome at our private lessons. Please call ext. 231 to book your time. PLeASe note: All participants MUST wear a helmet. 11 pro-d day & student led conference day programs Pond Hockey Tournament (5-12)** This Pro-D day program is open to everyone aged 5-12 that loves to play hockey - there is no minimum skill requirement (other than you have to be able to stand up on skates). Skate Shop staff will divide the players into teams based on age and previous experience. Registration fee includes: Pizza Lunch, Juice & Snacks Fun Packages for Each Player (including a free skate sharpening) Medals for the Top 3 Teams Please Note: basic hockey gear, running shoes & water bottle required! when: fri feb 24 9am-3pm cost: $45 s t r a t h c o n a g a r d e n s r e c r e a t i o n c o m p l e X wet n' wild Bootcamp (6-12) Aquatics Pro-d daycamp for Kids Develop your swimming skills, work on your dive, give water polo/underwater hockey/synchronized swimming a try, take the handstand challenge, learn how to do a flip turn, play sponge tag, have a water fight. Please bring a lunch, plenty of healthy snacks and water along with your swim suit, several towels and active wear. This program offers participants an opportunity to learn about many aspects of safe boating including: basic navigation regulations and "rules of the road", responding to emergencies and general pleasure craft operation knowledge (i.e. safety equipment, buoys, beacons, weather, etc.). In the pool the kids will learn how to self rescue and rescue others, practice the HELP and HUDDLE positions and capsizing/righting a canoe. Swim Kids Lessons (Ages 5 12 years) 30 Min Classes for Levels 1-6 & 45 Min Classes for Levels 7-10 L1 Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking, and build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim. L2 Work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface, the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim. L3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim. L4 Intro to the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim. L5 Intro to the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim. L6 This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Also includes front dive, treading water in deep water for 1½ minutes, dolphin kick and a 75m swim. L7 This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim. L8 Hypothermia, dangers of open water, rescue breathing, surface dives, stride entries, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke and a distance swim of 300m. L9 Wise choices and peer influence, boating regulations, self ice rescue, surface dives, shallow dives, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke, as well as a 400m distance swim. L10 Introduction to butterfly and scissor kick, fitness, sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, surface dives, as well as a 500m endurance swim. Candidates develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and in partners. Candidates also develop stroke endurance and lifesaving fitness skills. The NL lifeguard's primary role is to prevent injuries (and when necessary, effectively manage emergencies) and to facilitate a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience. ABTS (Abs, Buns, Thighs) Emphasis is on sculpting and toning the abs, buns, thighs and upper body to keep everything balanced. There are no cardio moves or running. Bellyfit This class combines belly dance, African dance, Bollywood and Bhangra; Pilates for the core, and Yoga to stretch your muscles. Boot Camp Bootcamp incorporates cardio and resistance training with core and flexibility exercises to help you reach your fitness goals. Boot Camp Plus Whatever your fitness level, this class will help you build a stronger and fitter body. It is appropriate for all fitness levels. Chair Yoga Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, reconnect with your breath and relax with meditation, all from the comfort of a chair. *Participants must be able to move independently and have the ability to give clear feedback to the instructor. Circuit Fusion This class combines strength, cardio, core and flexibility training using interval stations and a variety of equipment. How they differ is their rules, court size, and equipment. Squash balls are smaller than racquetballs, and squash racquets are longer than racquetball racquets. What is Wallyball? This sport adds a whole new dimension to the game of Volleyball. Wallyball is basically volleyball played in a racquetball court, and the walls are used to bounce and strategically place the ball.
