3 3 BRITISH GAS ASA OPEN WATER NATIONAL AGE GROUP & YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 Introduction The ASA would like to extend a warm welcome to all competitors and spectators for the British Gas ASA Open Water National Age Group and Youth Championships The following information has been prepared to assist you for the competition. Please read the complete document as it holds important information, some of which will be new to you. From M1 Junction 31 take the A57 towards Sheffield, at the roundabout take the A618 towards Mansfield, Wales Bar and Clowne, at the traffic lights go straight on and the park entrance is at the bottom of the hill on the right. Parking Competitor and spectator parking is available on site and is charged at 3.50 per car or motorcycle per day. The registration time for each event is indicated above. Please sign in and collect your latex hat and wrist band. You will also be asked to number up where you will be marked with a permanent marker on your upper arm, shoulder and back of hands this is for athlete recognition and is a requirement of the race. Briefing The briefing time is indicated above and will take place in the marquee on the green. It is essential that every athlete has a coach / chaperone present as important information will be provided about the race and safety procedures will be explained. This information must then be relayed to swimmers. If your coach / chaperone does not attend the briefing you will not be allowed to swim. Swimwear Only one costume is allowed. Costumes must comply with FINA Open Water rules. In Open Water swimwear for both men and women shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend below the ankle. OWS 6.9 No swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device which may be an aid to their speed, endurance or buoyancy. Goggles, a maximum of two (2) caps, nose clip and earplugs may be used. OWS 6.10 Swimmers shall be allowed to use grease or other such substances providing these are not, in the opinion of the Referee, excessive. Swimwear should be of a textile material, as pool rules apply. Our guidance is: the material used for swimsuits can be only textile fabric" defined as material consisting of natural and/or synthetic, individual and non consolidated yarns used to constitute a fabric by weaving, knitting, and/or braiding. 5 5 BRITISH GAS ASA OPEN WATER NATIONAL AGE GROUP & YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 Race Course The race will be timed manually. Access to the swim start will be down a ramp and onto the start pontoon. The course will start with a dive start off the pontoon. The swim course will be marked with swim buoys, a combination of small marker buoys and large turn buoys. Always keep the large buoys on your left. You will swim anti clockwise around fluorescent buoys on a 1km loop, followed by a second loop depending on your race distance (please consult the course map above). Race Finish The race will be completed with a touch finish; swimmers should touch the finish board above them. Further details regarding the race procedure will be given at the competitor briefing. Safety Information Safety boats will be on the water and course officials patrolling the edge of the lake. If you get into difficulties either make your way to the side of the lake or lie on your back in the water with your arm in the air. A rescue boat, equipped with blankets, will come and collect you. Water marshals, kayaks and land marshals with throw ropes will all be on hand should you experience any difficulties. Swimmers are never far from the lake bank and the turn sections of the course are indicated by large fluorescent buoys. Use sun block whatever the weather; always apply after numbering or an hour before numbering to allow time for it to soak in. Wear mirrored goggles to prevent glare and wear your goggles underneath your swim cap. This will avoid your goggles being knocked off your head at the start and around the turn buoys. Stay relaxed at the start of the race and don t panic. Cold water can make you breathe rapidly. If this happens, try to stay calm and concentrate on breathing deeply until your body adjusts to the water temperature. After leaving the water drink flat coke. Coke kills most bacteria and bugs swallowed during open water competition. Medical Provision The course will be marshalled by safety boats and first aiders to assist anyone experiencing any issues. An ambulance with first aiders will be in attendance. Baggage Storage Lockers are available within the activity centre. Boxes for footwear will be provided before entry onto the pontoon.

6 6 BRITISH GAS ASA OPEN WATER NATIONAL AGE GROUP & YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 Competition Results Unofficial results will be able to be viewed at the start/finish area. Confirmed results will be posted online at Presentations Medal presentations will take place as soon as possible after results for each race have been announced. If you have won a medal please report to the presentation podium as soon as possible dressed in your full club tracksuit. Coaches Passes Coaches / chaperones must display their coaches passes at all times when in the start finish area and pontoon. Coach passes for the British Gas ASA National Championships (Age Groups) 2014 at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, 30 th July 3 rd August must be collected from Ponds Forge International Sports Centre. These passes will be valid at the ASA Open Water National Championships. Coach passes for the British Gas ASA Open Water National Age Group & Youth Championships can be collected from the registration desk at Rother Valley from 08:00 on the 3 rd August. Coach / Chaperone pass applications will close online on the 18 th July to everyone apart from regional qualifiers. Doping Control Swimmers are warned that random doping control may take place during these Championships. It is essential that you bring with you to the event your passport, or other form of photographic identification. Venue Facilities Group changing rooms, toilets and lockers are located in the Water Sports Centre, adjacent to the lake. Additional toilets for spectators can be found in the Courtyard situated near to the cafe. Lockers take 50p, which must be given to reception in exchange for a wristband. Rother Valley Country Park offers the perfect opportunity to make a weekend of the British Gas ASA Open Water National Age Group and Youth Championships. The 750 acre park hosts a number of walking and cycling routes which link into the Transpennine Trail and Sustrans Route 6. Bicycles are available to hire from the Watersports and Activity Centre. To hire a bicycle you will need photographic ID. There are 5 lakes within the park, with the competition being held in the Main Lake which is 1 mile long. The Nature Reserves offers fantastic bird watching with over 260 different varieties of birds recorded over the past two years. Food and Drink On completion of the race each competitor will be given a food voucher. This voucher entitles you to a portion of soup, roll and can of coke which can be collected from the registration desk. Food and drinks are available to purchase from The Stables Cafe.

Programmes will be available to purchase from the registration desk. Event Merchandise Event photos will be available to purchase post event online from Video and Photography Policy British Swimming and the ASA are aware of the wide range of mobile phone and other personal hand held devices with a photographic capability, enabling the capture of both static and moving images. Used responsibly, such devices are perfectly safe, but sharing images widely may betray a confidence or even an identity and such information may help those who may want to harm children. The use of such equipment is difficult to control but we can all be vigilant and if you have concerns in this area, please bring them to the attention of a member of staff or security. This event will be photographed and videoed. Static and moving images may be displayed on the website partner and sponsor websites, at the venue and used to promote the sport at this event and events in the future. The following is taken from the British Swimming and ASA Data Protection notice and relates to photography and video images for all events: British Swimming and the ASA may record the competition events in which you participate and general images of swimmers will form part of the information we hold and use. In addition to the purposes for general information set out above, the ASA and/or British Swimming may use these recordings and images for the purposes of education and training, swimmer analysis, performance, development, selection and event promotion. British Swimming and the ASA work closely with our experts to ensure that in making these images available to enhance the presentation of the event we are not putting any children at risk in any way.
