1 Week Ending March 4, 2007 UMKC at SLU Cancer Center Classic UMKC Softball Takes On In-State Foes Missouri State, Southeast Missouri and Saint Louis To Raise Money For Cancer Research UMKC at SLU Cancer Center Classic Sat. March 3 - Sun. March 4, 2007 Billiken Sports Center (St. Louis, Mo.) The UMKC softball team is back in action this weekend, headed to St. Louis. Mo. for the SLU Cancer Center Classic. The Kangaroos represent the first of four games on Saturday as they take on the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State in a 12 p.m. start. The tournament, an annual fundraising event rotated among the four participating schools, helps to raise money for the cancer-related charity selected by the host school. UMKC At The SLU Cancer Center Classic UMKC has not fared too well in this tournament, losing a tough third-place game in the inaugural event in 2005 before losing all four games in the 2006 event, hosted by Missouri State. Scouting The Redhawks Southeast Missouri State has seen the least action of any team in this weekend's tournament, with only four games under its belt. Lauren Bradley and Lindsay Pickering have matching.455 batting averages, although Pickering has been more productive offensively. She has hit two homers on the year, collecting six RBI. Bradley is also the staff ace, picking up two wins on the year with a 0.00 ERA in 9.0 innings of work. Scouting The Billikens Saint Louis University has put together a 2-9 record so far this season. Ashley Levan and Lorena Floccari have each picked up a decision on the 2007 campaign, with Levan having the better ERA at Offensively, the Billikens are led by Christy Ernst's.517 average, including 9 RBI and 2 doubles. Scouting The Bears Missouri State will provide a stern test to wrap up pool play for the Kangaroos, as they have put together a 7-10 record on the year. Jessie Smith and Katie Martin have collected 10 and 12 RBI, respectively, to lead the offense. Melissa Porche has been the staff ace, putting together five wins in 10 decisions, with 6 complete games and a 2.15 ERA. About The SLU Cancer Center Classic This year marks the third iteration of the tournament, with the inaugural event hosted in 2005 by UMKC. Gate proceeds and donations collected at the tournament go to benefit a cancer-related charity chosen by the host institution. This year's beneficiary, the Saint Louis University Cancer Center, is a joint initiative between Saint Louis University Medical School and Saint Louis University Hospital, combining the latest advances in research, prevention and education with individualized care in a region where cancer is a leading cause of death. Past beneficiaries have included the American Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. In addition to the proceeds collected for charity, players and coaches of the participating teams dedicate the weekend to the memory and honor of friends and loved ones suffering from cancer. The Kangaroos would like to dedicate this weekend's play to Ben Harwell (on behalf of Leigh Kaylor); Mike Voight (on behalf of Lindsay Eaton); Cristie Elder and Lisa Waldhauer (on behalf of Kylie Williamson); and Pat Baker, Richard Baker and Richard Jones (on behalf of Alicia Baker). A New Beginning Although UMKC returns 10 players from last year's squad and seven position starters, it will be a different Kangaroo team that takes the field this year. In addition to new head coach Meredith Smith, six players will be suiting up for the Blue and Gold for the first time this season, while others have switched positions. Smith was hired to lead the Kangaroos in July of The past two seasons, Smith has served as the Director of Softball Operations at Tennessee. In this capacity, she was responsible for developing, organizing and distributing recruiting materials, while also coordinating the team's travel arrangements. In the 2006 season, Smith helped guide the Volunteers to the SEC Championship as well as the Women's College World Series. Prior to being promoted as a member of the UT staff, Smith served as the team's manager in She handled various administrative duties and oversaw the team's inventory throughout the season. The Knoxville, Tenn., native has also been a camp instructor for the Volunteers since As a student-athlete, Smith played collegiately at Centre College in Danville, Ky., in During that season, she tied an NCAA Division III record for most doubles in a single game with five and picked up all-conference honors and earned a league player of the week award. She then spent one semester at East Tennessee State before transferring to UT, where she was involved with the Pi Beta Phi honors society and was active with the Panhellenic Council. Smith graduated cum laude from Tennessee in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. She also holds her master's degree in sports psychology with a minor in sports management. The sophomore struck out a team-high 37 batters in her freshman season. Also looking to see some time in the circle is freshman Carli Slagle. The Macon, Mo. product earned first team all-conference and all-district team honors as both a junior and senior. Experience will hardly be a problem for UMKC, as the squad boasts seven seniors. Led by Kylie Williamson, who returns to the diamond after missing the entire 2006 championship season due to an injury suffered in 2005 fall ball, the senior class for UMKC should certainly ease the transition for the underclassmen on the squad. Youth Is Served In her first season as head coach for the UMKC softball program, Meredith Smith has the distinction of being the youngest coach among both her Mid-Con softball peers and her peers within the UMKC Athletics staff. At the young age of 25 years, 166 days when she was appointed head coach, she remains the youngest head coach at UMKC - although for a short period Chrissy Elder (interim VB) held that title. UMKC has a history of taking a chance on young coaches, as no fewer than nine head coaches were given the reins of a team before celebrating their 30th birthday. The youngest of the young bunch was Angela Garbe, who was tabbed to helm the women's tennis team in September 1991 at the tender age of 22 years and 264 days. Tough Schedule The 2007 schedule for UMKC includes four teams who made appearances in the NCAA Tournament last season, two of whom received votes in the preseason NFCA Coaches' Poll. In addition to Mid-Con Tournament champion Southern Utah, Missouri State University was also selected to the NCAA Tournament in Kansas and Oklahoma are the other two schools who saw action in the 2006 postseason. Kansas received five points in the preseason balloting for the NFCA Top 25 but couldn't crack the list, while Oklahoma was tabbed 16th in the list. Power Surge Although over the stretch of the season it may be tough to call UMKC a power-hitting softball team, the Kangaroos certainly got a big head start on besting last year's total of 13. 3B Jaclyn Schuyler opened up the Kangaroo season with a towering shot in her first at-bat against Missouri, while it took the 2006 team 19 games to hit its first dinger. Road Trip! Although there is no spring break trip to Florida for this year's senior class, there will be plenty of time spent on the road. The Kangaroos will head south to the Dallas, Texas area during spring break week to take on North Texas in a oneoff contest before facing Texas-Arlington in a double dip. Instead of returning home, UMKC will head over to Shreveport, La. for its first conference road series, taking on Centenary in a three-game set to close out March. Coach Smith's charges will also preview the rivalry with two schools set to join the Mid-Con in the school year, as the Kangaroos embark on a fivegames-in-three-days odyssey that takes them first to Brookings, S.D. on April 13 for a doubleheader against South Dakota State Univ. UMKC will continue north on Saturday and Sunday of that weekend to play a three-game tilt against North Dakota State Univ. An Omen? The last time the Kangaroos played indoors, they traveled north to the Minnesota Metrodome Classic to open the 2002 season. That season, UMKC went on to claim the regular-season Mid-Con title and the #1 seed in the conference championship tournament.
