Chelsea Hartwig has ignited the UMKC offense this year as she has recorded a teamhigh 22 hits and 15 RBIs. Kelly Fischer has chipped in as well, driving in nine base runners on 21 hits. From the pitching circle, the Kangaroos have used four pitchers that combined for a total of 99 strikeouts on the year. Nicholle Ellis (3-2) is the only pitcher with a winning record and has 31 strikeouts in 42.1 innings of work. Scouting Wichita State The Shockers (9-11) have gone 2-1 in their last three games, losing 8-1 to Nebraska, and defeating North Dakota twice, 13-5 (5), and 11-1 (5). The balanced Shockers offense has five different players who have collected 10 or more RBIs. Kara L Huiller leads the team in both RBIs (18) and hits (25) and Heather Gerritse has chipped in with 23 hits and 12 RBIs. Despite the 5-8 losing record from the circle, Kasha Kolb has thrown 60 strikeouts in 16 appearances. Brianna Smet is the only other player to pitch for Wichita State, recording 25 strikeouts with a team-low 3.86 ERA in 49 innings of work. Scouting kansas The Jayhawks (9-14) have won two of their last three games, out scoring their opponents Offensively, Val Chapple paces the attack with a team-high 14 RBIs and 14 hits. Stevie Crisosto has 20 hits and leads the team in runs as she has crossed home plate 14 times. From the circle, Val George has scene the most action, starting 13 games in 14 appearances. The senior has a team-low 2.57 ERA with a team-high 80 strikeouts. Game Notes Scouting no. 16 missouri The Tigers (19-3) have won their last five games, out scoring their opponents 28-4 and shutting out three opponents. In Missouri s last game on Wednesday, March 11, the Tigers defeated Northern Iowa, 2-1. Gina Schneider lead the offense in the victory, picking up a game-high two RBIs as she went 1-for-3 at the plate. Defensively, Chelsea Thomas (9-2) recorded the win, allowing eight hits and striking out eight Panther batters. last time out The Westerwinds participated in the annual Coach B Classic last weekend in Carbondale, Ill., and were unable to pick up any wins in the tournament. In the first game against SIU-Edwardsville on March 7, the Westerwinds were defeated 5-3 in eight innings. The second game of the day saw Western loss to Big Ten member Wisconsin, 4-2. On March 8, a rematch with SIU- Edwardsville was canceled due to the anticipation of thunderstorms and pushed up the start time of the game against No. 18/23 Southern Illinois. The rain and storm held out, making for a sunny 3 p.m. start time for the game with the Salukis, however, the Westerwinds could not pick up a win, losing 10-2 in five innings. Career day for DePolo Last weekend at the Coach B Classic, DePolo recorded six hits in nine at bats and drove in two Western base runners. In the loss to SIU-Edwardsville, the junior had a careerbest four hits as she was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. The New Lenox, Ill., native is tied with Erin Schlotfeldt with the team s most RBIs (8) and has recorded 14 hits on the season with a.311 batting average. Campbell crossing home plate Ashley Campbell has scored five more runs than her next closest teammate as she has racked up a team-high 12 runs. The freshman has picked up a hit in three of the last four games and has scored a run in two

3 of the last three games as well. In the 4-2 loss to Wisconsin, the Indianapolis, Ind., native recorded her first collegiate home run for the purple and gold. Marinec making a comeback After a sluggish start to the season where she only recorded three hits in 10 games, sophomore Nikki Marinec has gotten back on track as she has picked up three hits in three games. The Alsip, Ill., native has also helped her team out from behind the plate, throwing out an opposing base runner in each of her last three starts at catcher. Offensive team leaders Sophomore Michelle Prieto has a team-high.417 batting average with 15 hits and five RBIs for the Westerwinds. Fellow-sophomore Colleen Biebel leads the team in hits (16) and has crossed home plate seven times. Striking out more batters than their opponents Despite the losing records for the Westerwinds bullpen, Ashley Campbell, Kamren Ferguson and Lori Pankratz have combined for 68 strikeouts, four more than their opponents. Ferguson leads the group in innings pitched (38.2) and strikeouts (33). Pankratz and Campbell share the team-low ERA statistic as they both have a 2.88 ERA. Stealing more bases than their opponents too The purple and gold have stolen 15 more bases than their opponents with 25 and have only been caught stealing four times. Junior co-captain Lauren Furgala is a perfect 7-for- 7 in stolen bases followed by DePolo with five stolen bases. closing in on 1,000 wins The Western Illinois softball program is only four wins shy of getting its 1,000th win. The softball program was started in 1953 and has accumulated an overall record of (.478). If the Westerwinds can win four more games, they will be the first softball program in The Summit League to reach the 1,000 program win plateau Schedule The Westerwinds face three teams from the Big Ten and Big 12, and a team from both the Big East and Southeastern conferences in 2009 during non-conference action. More Storylines During the spring break trip, Western faces its second ranked opponent of the year in No. 16 Missouri in doubleheader on March 18. The Westerwinds first opportunity to face a ranked (No. 21/23 Louisville) opponent was canceled due to below 30 degree weather on Feb. 28 and March 1. The second ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and USA Today/NFCA Division I ranked opponent the Westerwinds played was No. 18/23 Southern Illinois (15-3) on March 18 and saw Western lose, 10-2 (5). Two other Westerwinds opponents received top-25 votes in Iowa who received 12 votes in the USA Today/NFCA poll and 10 vote in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. SIU-Edwarsville received one vote in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
