Message From Prime Minister Adam Baker By Adam Baker Happy May to everyone. We are certainly in full festivalseason mode! Virtually every weekend from now through mid-july we have a parade or a festival or an event which means we are all very busy. I appreciate everyone who attends these events and takes an opportunity to see the wonderful Realm of Rosaria. The traveling float is complete and ready for its tour through the Northwest Festival Hosting circuit, our drums are tuned, and events are on the calendar for

2 everyone to sign-up indicating their attendance. Our court is selected and are receiving training, and what a wonderful group of young women they are! Now is the time to make sure your whites are ready for marching season! Check the seams of your suit, check to see if you are missing patches or if yours is outdated and needs to be replaced, inspect your white belt, your white shoes and your hat for anything that needs repair or replacement. Speaking of great events, most of you know we have terrific photographers to capture our participation in different things. As we get more and more people taking photos with smartphones or with their own cameras, I would love to see any photos taken of First Lady Lauren and me since we can't take many photos of ourselves. I have set up a special for anyone to send photos to us for sharing on social media and for our own memories. Tomorrow is our next membership meeting and it's an important meeting for everyone to attend. This is the last opportunity you have to sign-up in person for our hospitality weekend before the discounted rate ends. You can still register online, but if you prefer to hand your check and registration form over in person, this is the last meeting you will have a chance to do it. Remember, if you are registered before the business portion of the meeting, you will be entered into the drawing at the end of the meeting for a $50 cash prize drawing. Click here for information regarding Hospitality Weekend Hospitality Weekend 2018 Carnival of Roses June 7-10 Registration continues for the Royal Rosarian 2018 Rose Festival Hospitality Weekend. Join Prime Minister Adam and First Lady Lauren for an exciting and fun-filled weekend June 7-10 at the DoubleTree Hotel. Your full registration packet includes admission to the Hospitality Suite all weekend, the "Under the Big Top" Fun Night, the "Paint the Town Red" Grand Floral Ball, and the Grand Farewell Breakfast. The Queens' Garden Party and preferred seating for the Queen's Coronation and Grand Floral Parade are a la carte registrations.

3 Rooms at the Lloyd Center DoubleTree Hotel are available at discounted rates of $150 and $160 plus tax per night. The rate is available through May 7. The Royal Rosarian Hospitality room code is RR8. Registration details are in the registration packet. The Hospitality committee is calling for volunteers to help with the Hospitality room. Help is needed in setting up, staffing when the room is open, and clean-up. Donations of food and money are also needed. Traditionally, Rosarians bring pot luck dishes and food. Click here to register for the 2018 Hospitality Weekend Cinco de Mayo Naturalization Ceremony Friday, May 4 The largest multi-cultural festival in the State of Oregon is the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta hosted by the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. The festival runs this weekend, May 4-6. One of the events of this annual festival is a naturalization ceremony for candidates for US citizenship. The Royal Rosarians participate each year with an honor guard. The ceremony will take place at 1:00 pm on Friday, May 4. Lord High Chamberlain Don Thacker will be a speaker. Rosarians who participate are deeply touched by the ceremony and the thrill for those who become American Citizens on this day. This event is hosted by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Portland-Guadalajara Sister City Association. A reception will take place immediately following the ceremony. When: Friday, May 4 Time: 1:00 pm (assemble at 12:30 pm) Location: Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Main Cinco de Mayo Entrance Gate. Rosarians do not pay entry fee. Proceed to large tent on the South end of the concourse. Uniform: Whites, Capes, Gloves and Hats. Women wear pants. If new members do not have white uniforms you may wear the green uniform. Parking: Nearby parking lots and streets ($$). TriMet is an option. 100th Anniversary of Vista House Saturday, May 5

4 St. Johns Parade Saturday, May 12 The Columbia Gorge Vista House at Crown Point celebrates its 100th anniversary with a ceremony this coming Saturday, May 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.the Rosarians have participated in the flag raising ceremony at all of the major events at the Vista house for the last 100 years. Many of our founding members were instrumental in the creation of the building and our participation is very important. There will be food, drink and special gifts for all participants, vintage cars to enjoy and lots of fun. Plan to park at the Corbett School on the Old Columbia River Highway. A free shuttle will take you to the Vista House and return you to the car after the ceremony. Arrive between 4:30 and 5:00 and the celebration will occur from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Uniforms should be whites with hats, gloves, and pants for the women. If you have any questions, please contact Duke Bob Woody at Vista House is a museum at Crown Point, that also serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The hexagonal stone building was designed by Edgar M. Lazarus in the style of Art Nouveau, and completed in 1918 after nearly two years of construction. With its high-grade marble interior and brass fixtures, some Oregonians at the time derided it as the "$100,000 Outhouse" during its construction. According to an itemized list published by the Oregon Historical Society, the building itself eventually cost approximately $70,000, with an additional $9,000 for the accompanying rock wall. The original idea was for an observatory at the site. Engineer Samuel Lancaster proposed "an observatory from which the view both up and down the Columbia could be viewed in silent communion with the infinite." Construction of the Vista House began December 29, 1916 and was completed in 1918 and dedicated May 5, Lazarus' design incorporates elements of the Jugendstil, the German interpretation of Art Nouveau which had been popular in Europe in the late 19th century up to The building is essentially a domed rotunda 44 feet in diameter with an hexagonal plan on a 64-foot diameter base which houses toilets and a gift shop. The rotunda is 55 feet high. Stairs lead from the rotunda to an elevated viewing platform at the base of the dome. The exterior is gray sandstone, with a green tile roof. The interior is extensively finished in marble, even in the toilets. The dome interior has bronze lining. The clerestory windows feature opalescent glass in a simple tracery pattern, with similar colored glass at the tops of the windows at the main level.

Just look for the Rosarian Traveling Float!. Rosarians must be in place by 11:00 am. The float and Prime Minister's Car must be in place by 7:45 am as the streets will be closed to the staging area at 8:00 am. At the end of the Parade please join other Rosarians at the Twilight Room, 5242 N Lombard Ave. The Twilight Room is a traditional gathering point after the parade for Rosarians to enjoy camaraderie and a cool beverage or bite to eat. Click hereto register for the St. Johns Parade Lilac Festival, Spokane, Washington May Join the Rosarian contingent traveling to Spokane for the Spokane Lilac Festival May Celebrating the festival's 80th anniversary, the host committee promises a good time. The 2018 theme is "Swing into Spokane." Started in 1938, Spokane Lilac Festival hosts a Military lunch and golf tournament, Queens lunch, Royal Tea Parties, and an art show. The crowning jewel is the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. The morning of the parade, check out the Cruzin' The Falls Car Show. See hot rods, classic cars and unique rides along Spokane Falls Blvd. The Armed Forces Torchlight Parade is the largest of its kind in the nation with about 300 entries! People will line the streets of Spokane to wave at floats, enjoy regional bands and celebrate our heroes as they pass by. The parade starts at 7:45 pm, but prime viewing locations fill

6 up quickly. This year's Royal Rosarian traveling float will fit right in with its decorations of military service logos. Most scores are in the 50's and 60's. 6. A weekly reminder is available via , if you like. Rosarian Rotogravure The last two weeks of April were busy ones for the Royal Rosarians. The USS Portland (LPD-27) arrived at Terminal 2 for its ceremonial commissioning. Rosarians were busy with greeting the huge amphibious transport dock on its arrival, a hosted reception aboard the ship, an honorary knighting of the ship's

7 Command Master Chief, Executive Officer, and the ship's sponsor and former First Lady of the Marine Corps, Bonnie Amos. On Saturday, April 21 Rosarians joined 5000 guests to witness the moving commissioning ceremony. Prime Minister Adam officially welcomes Captain Hill and the USS Portland. An Honorary Knighting was conducted by Queen Michaela and Rosarian Council aboard the USS Portland on Friday, May 20. The crew turned out for this timeless traditional Royal Rosarian ceremony.. "Gotta run kid! I see a parade that needs saving. Remember to eat your Wheaties and you too can grow up to be a Royal Rosarian." The 2018 Royal Rosarian Traveling Float makes its debut at the 82nd Avenue of Roses Parade.

8 Announcements For the Good of the Organization Membership Meetings May is a bonus month for Royal Rosarian membership meetings. As Prime Minister Adam emphasized above, the May 3 meeting is an important one. The next meeting will be on May 24. We will be hosting the Rose Festival Court at that meeting. They are a great group of young ladies representing Portland and their respective schools. It is spouses night so invite your partner to attend and meet the court. Gloves for Starlight Parade A Rosarian favorite, the Starlight Parade, is not to far off on June 2. Check your lighted "sparkle" gloves to see if they still work. If not, or if you do not have a pair, contact Dame Roz Vancil Tour of Hoyt Arboretum The staff of the Hoyt Arboretum in Washington Park will be offering a guided tour of the beautiful facility to rose volunteers and friends of the Washington Park International Test Garden this coming Friday, May 4 at 1:00 pm. The tour will run approximately one hour and a half. Meet at the Hoyt visitor's center. It is recommended to carpool or use the Washington Park shuttle. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Contact Secretary of State Kimberly Bown to RSVP. Rose Garden Contest There is still plenty of time to register your rose garden for the Royal Rosarian Rose Garden Contest. Applications must be postmarked no later than May 25. On-site judging will take place on Sunday, June 3 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. The awards ceremony will take place in the Royal Rosarian Garden in the Washington Park International Test Garden on Tuesday, June 19.
