At Newsmakers of the Year prominent local media honor citizens from the Greater Portland area who have performed exceptional acts of heroism or benevolent service without regard for personal safety, public recognition or commercial gain.

2 Local TV and newspaper newsrooms select Newsmaker Honorees. They are awarded a Royal Rosarian bronze medallion and a framed certificate by the Prime Minister. The goal is to honor heroes and heroines in our community, to celebrate journalistic excellence as expressed through the reporting of events that have a positive influence upon the way we live, and to inspire the audience with a sense of pride in a greater community. The price is $55 for individual tickets. Corporate table sponsorships are still available, but arrangements must be made no later than March 8 by calling Councilor David Rich or Sir Knight Jon Caplan ( ). Corporate Sponsor tables include seats for eight attendees and program recognition and priority placement. The cost for Corporate Table sponsorship is $550. You can register by clicking the link below or on the Rosarian website. Address questions to Councilor David Rich at or david.rich38@gmail.com. After the knighting ceremony, you will enjoy a wonderful dinner, and then dance to the music of the band, "One Brick Shy". The membership committee is still accepting new member applications for the 2018 class. Applications must be received in sufficient time to be processed and presented to the Council at its March 19 meeting. Applications received after that will become part of the 2019 class. Duke Rick Saturn and Lady Marie recently visited Guadalajara to try out the hotel where the group will stay. They reported back it was a colorful, fun and safe city with great shopping. For more information or to register contact Duke Rob Hungerford at or r.hungerford@comcast.net. End a great trip with beautiful sunsets in Puerto Vallarta. Rosarian Rotogravure Prime Minister Adam and First Lady Lauren were joined by a group of Royal Rosarians to visit hospitalized veterans Friday, February 16 at the VA Hospital to say Thank You. A card and a rose was given to each veteran thanking them for their service. Rosarians were able to talk to some during the visit, some Veterans shared their stories and others shared a smile with the visiting Rosarians.. The Hearts and Roses Benefit Auction and Dinner committee, chaired by Master of Ceremonies Mike Ware worked hard to put on a highly successful evening. Attendees had a good time and the auction did very well for the programs of the Foundation. The special appeal alone netted $40,000.

5 Secretary of State Kimberly Bown and Dame Jacquie Janulis have the auction treasures in place and ready for bidders. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays the Royal Rosarians from the swift completion of their appointed duties as greeters for the City of Portland. 6 Madame Caroline Testout Rose The Rose that Made Portland Famous. The Oregon Historical Society recently announced an upcoming exhibit, 'Madame Caroline Testout: The Rose that Made Portland Famous.' The exhibit will be at the society's location at 1200 SW Park Ave., Portland from March 9 through June 17, Madame Caroline Testout was a late nineteenth century French couturiere from Grenoble and proprietor of fashionable salons in London and Paris. She regularly visited Lyons, a city that happened to be an important center for rose breeding. Hybrid Tea roses were at that time all the rage, breeders having at last been able to develop them successfully. No rose nurseryman was more celebrated than the 'Wizard of Lyons," Joseph Pernet-Ducher. Mme Testout, an astute businesswoman who understood the value of good publicity, went to see Perner-Ducher, asking if he could name one of his new roses after her. He agreed, and the selected rose made its debut at her salon's 1890 Spring fashion show, bearing the name 'Madame Caroline Testout.' Although not strong on scent, it was an immediate success with Madame Testout's well-to-do customers and gardening public for its abundant silky, rose-pink flowers. Only two years after the rose's introduction the Royal Horticultural Society gave it an Award of Merit. Four years later the Reverend H J Pemberton, Vice President of the National Rose Society and rose breeder declared "in my opinion it is one of the best, if not the very best, new rose of the last seven years." The new variety's popularity spread to America, and it has been estimated that in Portland nearly half a million 'Caroline Testout' roses were planted along the sidewalks. Visitors were astonished by the roselined streets of Portland when they arrived for the Lewis & Clark Exposition in Rose mania was underway and Portland became internationally known as the Rose City. The year 1907 saw the beginning of the Rose Festival with hedges and home gardens providing millions of roses for floats, women's hats and anything else that could be covered in roses. Mystery Rosarian Guess Who This Rosarian has enjoyed a career revolutionizing elder care. Her hobbies include gardening, grandchildren, travel, exploring this great
