Well summer has finally arrived and with it has come the beautiful weather. Hope you are taking advantage of the lovely days by walking, or cycling or just getting out enjoying the fresh air. Since our last newsletter we have had several events including the Tulip Fest walks and our Eastern Ontario walk in Plantagenet. The summer evening walks are now in full swing so come out on Wednesday evenings and join your fellow walkers on a nice walk. Besides our evening and weekend walks (June-August) don t forget to mark on your calendars 14 Aug for the Kings Town Trekkers (Kingston) Anniversary Walk and 20/21 Aug for the More Days Walk. Safe travels throughout your summer holidays and see you on the trails. 2 More Days Walk 2016 Saturday, August 20 and Sunday August 21, 2016 NOTE: Organized By A Joint Committee Of The Ottawa Voyageurs & The Nepean Nomads LOCATION: Le P tit Train du Nord - Linear Park (Laurentians Region, Québec) The Linear Park starts at Mont Laurier, QC, and ends at Bois des Filion, QC, for a total distance of 232km. This year s walk will start from Saint-Faustin-Lac-Carré, QC, to Piedmont, QC, with accommodation in Val-David, QC, for a total of approximately 55 km for the walkers and 110 km for the cyclists. Free parking is available at both the start point at the former train station site in Saint-Faustin-Lac-Carré, QC and at Auberge Du Vieux Foyer in Val-David, QC DIRECTION: From Downtown Ottawa, ON, cross Mcdonald-Cartier Bridge and take Hwy 50-E, direction Montréal, QC. From East End Ottawa, ON take Hwy 174, direction Orléans/Cumberland, ON, turn left on Cameron St. in Cumberland, ON, and take the ferry to Masson-Angers, QC, then turn right on Hwy 50-E, direction Montréal, QC, For all: On Hwy 50-E, take exit 292-N to merge onto TransCanada Hwy15-N toward Saint-Jérôme, QC. Stay on TransCanada Hwy15-N and follow signs to Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, QC. Take exit 76 for Hwy 117-N toward Val-David, merge onto Hwy 117-N. Turn right onto Rue de l Église in Val-David, QC, which will change to 1er Rang Doncaster at the other end up to Auberge Du Vieux Foyer at 3167, 1er Rang Doncaster in Val-David, QC. Day 1: from former train station site in Saint-Faustin-Lac-Carré, QC, to Auberge Du Vieux Foyer at 3167, 1er Rang Doncaster in Val-David, QC. Day 2: from Auberge Du Vieux Foyer at 3167, 1er Rang Doncaster in Val-David, QC. to former train station site in Piedmont, QC. (underlined text to be confirmed later) ACCOMMODATION: AUBERGE DU VIEUX FOYER, 3167, 1er Rang Doncaster in Val-David, QC, J0T 2N0. address: info@aubergeduvieuxfoyer.com Website: Telephone: (819) or While making reservations, please refer to Ottawa Voyageurs Walking Club Two chalets with four (4) bedrooms each i.e. [eight (8) rooms for potentially sixteen (16) participants] and five (5) rooms in the Auberge [for potentially another ten (10) participants] have been blocked. Each participant must individually do their own booking anytime between now and May 15, 2016 by indicating their choice of accommodation and name of their roommate. A deposit of $100 per person will be debited upon reservation. The package negotiated is per person for the entire stay, which includes two (2) nights (Friday and Saturday), three (3) meals (1 group supper à la carte on Saturday evening and 2 breakfasts) and free usage of all the outdoor facilities available at the Auberge for the guests, including parking, outdoor pool, spa and sauna. Standard room in the Auberge: (1) one occupant, $262 per person plus taxes. (2) double occupancy, $202 per person plus taxes. Chalet (6 people minimum): (1) Chalet with eight people, $176 per person plus taxes. Volume XII Issue 2 Winter / Hiver Page 2 of 10

3 (2) Chalet with six people, $185 per person plus taxes. Cancellation must be done seven (7) complete days before date of arrival. Your deposit will then be returned/credited to your credit card minus 15% for administration fee. Any time after, your deposit is forfeited. MEALS: You can bring a lunch for Saturday or order one. Group Dinner on Saturday evening will be at the Auberge around 7 PM. The hotel has a liquor/wine permit. Box lunch can also be prepared upon demand for Saturday and Sunday luncheon at $12.50 (plus taxes) with a choice of sandwiches plus a fruit, a non-alcohol beverage and a dessert. SUPPORT STAFF: Chase cars with supplies will follow and meet the participants at every 5 km as feasible. They will transport the participants from the Auberge on Day 1 to the start point and will also provide transportation for those who will travel Saturday morning and go directly to the start point for car pick-up from the start point after the walk on Day 1. On Day 2, they will transport the participants from the finish point back to the Auberge. The cars can stay at the Auberge s parking all day on Saturday and Sunday PARTICIPATION: If you are interested in participating in this event, as either a walker or support staff, or a cyclist, please register by contacting Benoît Pinsonneault either by phone at (613) or by at benoitpinson@rogers.com NOTE Based on past experience of adding a Bicycle Event to the More Days Walk, it is our intent to repeat this experience, once again, this year. Please confirm your interest when registering for the event, as mentioned in the immediate above paragraph. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ On Saturday May 7 th, 2016 the club held the 18 th Annual Charity walk for the Orleans Cumberland Community Resource Centre raising approximately $1,400 which will be used to purchase dairy, meat, and fresh produce for the food bank. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who worked the registration desk, lead group walks and the OCCRC volunteers who answered questions and assisted at the start and finish. A special thank you goes out to all the businesses and organizations which assisted in making this a successful walk: Maxine - Avalon Massage Therapy; Rajnish Sharma Subway Place Centrum; River Pizza and the Shenkman Arts Centre. Thank you Suzanne Wert, Manager of Finance and Administration, who took walkers and volunteers on a tour of the OCCRC and the food bank. The IVV passed a motion at the Congress of Delegates last year concerning the Event and Distance Books. This must be implemented by 1 Jan, I am giving you this now so that you are aware of the coming changes. AWARDS The IVV Award for events and distance (kilometers) will be granted in the following increments: Events: after 10, 30, 50, 75, 100, 125 etc. up to 600 Events. After that the walker has the choice to hand in the record book either after 50 Events (650, 700, 750 etc.) or after 100 Events (700, 800, 900 etc.) Distance: after 500, 1000, 1500, etc. up to 10,000 km. After that, the walker has a choice to hand in the record book either after 1,000 km (11,000, 12,000, 13,000 etc.) or after 5,000 km (15,000, 20, 000, 25,000 etc.) The awards will be a certificate only. Patches and pins (if available) will be available for purchase by the walker. RECORD BOOKS: The following books will be used (from 2018 on) Volume XII Issue 2 Winter / Hiver Page 4 of 10

5 Event books: Green: 10, 30, 50 events Purple: up to 600 events Red: more than 600 events in increments of 50 or 100 Distance Books: Blue: up to 10,000 km increments of 500 km Yellow: more than 10,000 km in increments of 1,000 or 5,000 Km. DIRECTIONS: Exit Highway 174 at Jeanne d'arc Blvd, head North on Jeanne d'arc to the intersection with Orleans Blvd. Turn left on Orleans Blvd and then immediately right into the mall parking lot. DIRECTIONS: From the WEST take Hwy 417 East exiting at Kent St (Exit 120) follow Kent North to Somerset St, turn RIGHT to Bank St, turn LEFT and the Sport 4 store is on your left just past Laurier Ave. Note: there is limited parking on Gloucester St (turn left off Bank St) or to access underground paid parking at L esplanade Laurier, turn right onto Laurier, then right on O'Connor, and right onto Gloucester: entrance to parking lot is on your right. 7 OTTAWA VOYAGEUR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES 2016 Saturday, August 20 & Sunday August 21, 2016 More Days Walk - a group walk of 2 or more days. 1. More info to follow, watch your and check the club website at September 18, 2016 or rain date Sunday, September 25, Cleaning the Capital - Fall Clean-up. Starting from the UltraMar Gas Station at the corner of Orléans Blvd and Jeanne D'Arc Blvd (North - home of the UltraMar PT). Meet at 9:00 am. All participants will receive a free UltraMar PT event stamp. Group brunch is planned, with one lucky volunteer receiving a free lunch. Mark your calendars! Saturday, October 1, Fall Rhapsody Walk, Gatineau Park. Remember to bring your lunch and stay for a picnic after the walk. Bring some dessert to share with other walkers. Check the club website a and watch your . Saturday, November 5, Volunteer Appreciation Walk and Lunch. This event will be hosted by the Nepean Nomads. Watch your s as details will be circulated later in the season and posted on our website: Friday, November 11, 2016 Remembrance Day Walk This event is a group walk, in Tribute to the Canadian Forces and will begin at Champagne Bath beginning at 9:30 am so that walkers arrive at the National War Memorial on time to participate in the service. Sunday, November 27, th Annual Ottawa Voyageurs Christmas Party. Location TBA - an will be circulated in October and notices will be at club walks. 8 OTTAWA VOYAGEURS WALKING CLUB EVENT FEES POLICY PARTICIPANTS: 1. FIRST FIVE EVENTS: The Ottawa Voyageurs Walking Club will provide new members with their first five events free. New Members will receive a booklet to track their first five free walking events.. 2. REGULAR EVENT: Except for the First Five Events, an event fee of $2.00 will be payable by everyone participating in any Ottawa Voyageurs Walking Club Event, starting January 1, 2016 regardless of participation in the awards program or not. 3. PERMANENT TRAIL (PT): No change in fees for year 2016 for Ottawa Voyageurs Walking Club permanent trails. The fee is $2.00 for the first times in each half of the year and $1.00 for each repeat in that half of the year. (i.e., $2.00 for first with a + sign then $1.00 for each time walking until the + sign is removed, then the first walk is $2.00 and all following walks are $1.00 for the rest of the year.) VOLUNTEERS: 1. EVENT STAMP: Volunteers who are not participating in the event but are volunteering for at least one hour at that Ottawa Voyageurs Walking Club event are entitled to a free Event Stamp. 2. PRE-CHECKING ROUTES: Volunteers who are pre-checking routes for accuracy before the event are entitled to ONE free Event/Distance Stamp. Volunteers who pre-checked the route and who are repeating the same event on the Event Day will pay the Fee of $2.00 for an additional Distance Stamp.
