1 1 Tunku Putra Weekly News 6 O C T O B E R, Mr Eric, Head of National Primary It is my pleasure to share the following article which I have read recently. MAKE A DIFFERENCE Jalan Stadium, Petra Jaya Kuching Sarawak Malaysia Phone: Fax: info@tps.edu.my O C T O B E R M T W T F S S N O V E M B E R M T W T F S S NS - Semester 2 Exam Oct (T1, 2 &4) IS - Semester 2 Exam 6 Oct Primary - Interactive quiz Secondary - Volleyball / Chess competition 9-12 NS - PT3 Assessment Oct 10 Oct IP / IS Checkpoint - English & ESL 11 Oct IP / IS Checkpoint - Maths 12 Oct IP / IS Checkpoint - Science 13 Oct IP Cultural Day Secondary House Event Any Newsletter comments or contributions, please contact Ms Sindy (sindyt@tps.edu.my) 1 One fine day, an old man was walking down the beach when he spotted a lonesome figure who appeared to be dancing along the shoreline. Upon close inspection, he found a young boy who was throwing starfish into the sea. You see, starfish washed up to the shore would die if it is not brought back into the vast ocean. The old man approached the boy and asked, Young man, there are so many starfish along the shoreline, you surely can t make a difference to all of them. Upon hearing this, the young boy took up the next starfish and while throwing it back into the sea told the man sincerely, Well it made a difference to this one. The article catches my attention, has helped me regain my confidence and made me see light with my own expectations. To others, one may be the lone person but to the one or ones you have assisted, you may be the world. Let us all start MAKING A DIFFERENCE, even if you may meet with challenges in the role you play. Celebration for National-level Young Innovators Challenge #mydigitalfair Joseph Chung Ming Chung and team mate Muhammad Nur Iman Bin Zaidel, both Tingkatan 3 students, emerged as Gold Medalist of National-level Young Innovate Challenge Fair This event was held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 16 th to 17 th September 2017 and was hosted by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). Another team which consisted of Roxanne Lee Kah Yean and team mates Sein Lim (both Year 11) and Aalisha Riya Byles (Year 8) won the bronze medal in the same event. These two groups had won the State Level Competition which was held at the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus on 8 th July With this, they were selected to participate in this National Level Competition. Despite the time constraint and other academic commitments, especially in their crucial year of preparing for PT3 examination and IGCSE examination, the teams did not waver. They persisted, kept trying and juggled their time until the last hour and they finally won the gold medalist and bronze medalist awards.
2 The Young Innovators Challenge is a nationwide event to enhance the creativity and inventiveness of students. This event is to inspire interest in STEM subjects and to enable access to open-source technologies. It is also to reinvigorate the development of life skills, such as problem solving, tenacity and collaboration. This program creates an environment where students can develop their life skills through the process of trying things out and to figure out how things work as well as applying what they have learned through their projects. Life skills such as communication, critical thinking, and tenacity equip students to thrive in the classroom and when they enter the workplace. Guided by the mentor, Mr Solomon, and teacher-in-charge, Mr Wong Hieng Jiing and Ms Paula Byles, who are passionate about STEM, the students picked up a challenge that was close to their hearts, they defined a problem statement, and developed a solution that solved a real- life problem. The effort that students put into identifying the problem and understanding the opinions of the people affected by the problem, had engaged them, in the determining a solution and building their enthusiasm in STEM. Congratulations and well done to our TPS teams. P A G E 2 Continued from Page 1 Presentation to judges about Store Buddy by Roxanne, Sein and Aalisha. Joseph and Imam did their best to impress the judges about Pheromone E-Trapper. The Gold Medal Award presented to Muhammad Imam and Joseph Chung The Bronze Medal Award recipients: Aalisha, Sein and Roxanne Lee.
3 PAGE 3 Report on Borneo International Cup Football Tunku Putra School under-12 football team participated in the annual Borneo International Cup Football Tournament held from September Entering its 10th edition, the Borneo International Cup is arguably the most prestigious youth international tournament in Borneo region, and this year 8 teams from four countries, Malaysia, Philippine, Indonesia and Australia took part in this tournament. Grouped together with the defending champions, St George Sydney FC, TABS Sabah and SBAI FC from Indonesia, Tunku Putra was the only school based team that compete in this edition. In the first match against TABS Sabah, both teams played an all attacking style and the presence of Malaysia under-12 national striker playing for TABS proves to be the main difference as his clinical finishing brings glory to his team where TABS won 4-2 in a closely contested match. Players and coaching team of Tunku Putra Football Club In the second match against the defending champions, St George Sydney our players played a more cautious game; defending well against a very strong side coached by ex-australian striker Abbas Saad and despite giving their very best, St George won comfortably 3-0. Both matches were played on day 1 of the competition. On the second day the Tunku Putra team played two more matches, against SBAI Indonesia in the morning where we lost 1-2 in a very tight match up. In the afternoon TPFC played against Kuala Lumpur FA in the semi-final of silver cup (loser group) and that was a very tough game for us and all players worked together to secure our first win in the competition beating KL FC 2-1 thus qualifying for the final of the silver cup. Tunku Putra Football Club 23 team members On the third and final day, we were playing the final of silver cup against a local side Burnmark FC. TPFC were controlling 65% of the match only to be denied by hard luck and good goalkeeping from opponent s keeper. In the end Burnmark FC won 2-1 and Tunku Putra Football Club finished as runner up in the silver cup. Overall it had been a very fruitful outing for the students as they learned and played against the best; never giving up when they lost and with great team spirit to encourage everyone to perform their best. Well done boys and well done Zara Bugo, the only girl taking part. The team is looking forward to few more tournament before the long holidays. Reserve players waiting for their turn to play First day and waiting for first match TUNKU PUTRA First eleven against SBAI Indonesia WEEKLY N EWS
