All the World s a Stage 2nd Form used William Shakespeare s famous speech from As You Like It as inspiration to create their own versions All the world s a stage, And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first, He is crying and screaming in his mother s arms, Keeps full energy, never becoming tired; And then the first day of his school life, He gets to face the problems himself, Gaining knowledge and full of talent. Then on the rugby pitch, beards around his chin, Muscles saying hi to the sun, All the heavy things on his shoulders, However difficult it is, he needs to solve These things by himself. And then in the office, broken leg, Can only say bye to his favourite arena. Staring at the screen, fingers type faster, Starting a new life. Then a man with black suit on, Staring at cash on a table. With double chin on the face and more of his own weight, Beard cut off to make himself look younger; And then into the wheelchair, Can t see anything so far away, Muscle has become dull. Looking at his grandson playing with toys, Knowing this is who deserves his love. Then the end under the ground, Without anything, Just left with bones, pictures on a wall, Who remembers? Souls fly away. But do not fear. Everything will start again. Steve All the world s a stage, And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. It all begins The only way life knows, As a defenceless child, filled with innocence. Full of weakness, they must rely on Others to survive. Soon, that baby is forced into school, Blessed with knowledge but cursed with stress. Fits of laughter, but moments of panic. They strive to succeed, but struggle To stay brave. Then there s love, a factor which By no means helps. Nightmare nor daydream, it is simply what it is. Suddenly the playground turns into A battlefield. Wearing masks of placidity, trying To deceive all. One faces many battles, big and small Daunting and simple, life-threatening and safe. The fifth scene takes on expectations, But twisted. Settling down, but divorce. Children, but misunderstanding. Perfect job but little pay. Slowly, each smile brings its own tattoo. Eyes lose their twinkle, heart loses Warmth. The stage of ignorance, or perhaps Knowing and understanding, but Refusal to accept. Then the curtain closes, just like eyelids. Whether planned or unexpected, Death Is hardly picky. Lauren

The Fire Snake The fire is an angry snake Vibrant orange and silky slick, Licking the building as it climbs Black saliva coating the walls Clawing, reaching higher and higher Jaws open wide swallowing, Swaying peacefully to The music of the snake charmer. Flames burst as wood falls, Hissing as they explode, Tongues shooting up spraying sparks, All over the ground like darts. Slithering through the air it goes Whipping at the sky, gasping for air to stay alive, Clawed at by predators trying to bring it down As wood crashes to dust. Only thin wisps of black cloud rise The snake lies in its shadow, Olly the ashes of its motivation Gone, gone, gone to the eternal sleep of death. Max Whole Body Memory My eyes remember the tug-of-war with tears, My ears remember a deafening roar, My nose remembers freshly sharpened pencils; My tongue remembers my dry thirst. My hands remember nervous sweat, My legs remember hesitant folding; My feet remember cold concrete My skin remembers yearning for sunlight; My body remembers trembling, This memory s not worth remembering. Aisha Whole Body Memory My eyes remember a massive green battlefield With soldiers on the other side My ears remember the roar of Fettes! Fettes! My nose remembers the tension rising My mouth remembers the bitter taste of grass My hands remember the shape of the ball Asking me to take it away. My legs still burn from the speed of running like lightning My knees remember the first touch of that soily grass My bones remember people grabbing me. Fiyin

Activities Volleyball Skiing We have had a choice of over 20 activities to take part in each term this year and have enjoyed every one! Here s a selection of them Chess K-NEX Climbing Judo Cricket Golf

Water skills Shooting Cooking Gardening

Cricket Sport It was a tough start to the season for the 1st XI with the boys finding themselves on the wrong side of some very close matches (which didn t help their coach s hairline!). The second half of the season turned out to be far more fruitful with the boys putting together a run of three victories in a row just before the end of the season, and finishing off things in high spirits. It was a shame that they didn t manage to beat their parents in their friendly match maybe next year! The second XI won one and lost three (one of which was by a single run). There are a lot of positives that the boys can take from their individual and team performances this year. The 3rd XI enjoyed a very successful season, winning three of the four matches that they played. The boys showed fantastic team spirit throughout the year, and many of them were pushing for and achieving a place in the 2nd XI. Great effort, lads! The 4th XI turned out a number of times this year, and it was great to see so many boys participating in competitive cricket. The team enjoyed a good couple of victories over close-rivals Merchiston and, like the 3rd XI, really impressed their coach this year with their effort and attitude. We wish the best of luck to the boys moving into the 3rd form, and also to those who will be contesting for Prep 1st XI places as 2nd formers next year. The U11 year group had an incredible season this year with the U11A team remaining undefeated throughout and the U11B s only losing one match! The boys have been really impressive and should feel very proud. It is also particularly pleasing that every single U11 boy played in a representative match for the school. The boys must be congratulated for putting together a fantastic season, although the challenge now is to repeat the success again next year! After a shaky start, the U9s went on a run of three victories in a row! The team have made vast amounts of progress this year; from struggling to score runs, to many of the boys now peppering the boundary for fun! The boys deserve a big pat on the back for their endeavours this season. Again, every single U9 boy was part of a competitive (and successful) team this year. Not forgetting our wonderful female cricketers, the U12 girls turned their hand to cricket in the summer term and played extremely well to win the Loretto Tournament!

Athletics Although we have been a little unlucky with the weather, which has hampered athletics matches, the sun shone on Fettes College for the IAPS Athletics Meeting! In what was a really super afternoon of athletics around 300 athletes competed from 10 schools. We enjoyed winning a good share of the medals with an overall tally of 19 golds, 14 silvers and 16 bronzes in the individual competitions. Catherine broke the high jump record in the U13 girls event, Kate broke the record in the U metres and Finlay broke the U14 boys Discus record. The event finished with the relays which was a gripping end to the day. The Fettes team were keen to retain the Savills relay cup but there was more competition this year. Fortunately the U14 teams took a gold medal (girls) and a silver medal (boys) to secure the cup again! Cross Country Our runners this year have displayed real grit and determination with some excellent results across all the age ranges. At the Compass Cross Country Orla won the U10 race with Rosie coming in 8th and Susanna 11th. Rayane was the first back for the U10 boys team in 13th place and Hector was next in 14th position. In the U11 race Kate won, swiftly followed by Abigail in 10th place and Sophie in 14th. The last race was the U11 boys and Harvey led the way for the team, coming in 4th place with Joe just behind in 6th and Hiroki in 12th. At the Scottish Prep Schools Cross Country both our U10 and U14 boys and girls teams put in good performances on a fairly inclement day at John Muir Country Park. In the girls U12 our team came 2nd with Kate taking an individual silver and her team mates all finishing in the top 25. The U12 boys also came 2nd in the team event: Harvey, Sean and Matthew all finishing in the top 10.

Golf Good fortune meant that the Fettes team managed two days of glorious golfing weather at the I.A.P.S Championships which were held at the Hill Valley Golf Club in Whitchurch. On this occasion the team were not able to make the podium places but everyone gave a very good account of themselves, both on and off the course. Yusuke led our way with an encouraging Stableford haul of 35 points, a fine effort considering that some of the opponents are able to golf every day! Another glorious Friday was just what we needed for the next leg of the Fettes Golf Tour, our internal School Championship a.k.a. the Entwistle Cup. Overall the firm fairways and an improvement in our abilities meant that we went through the course in good time, noticeably quicker than in recent years, definitely an encouraging sign. Ultimately Yusuke kept up his good form to take the trophy slightly ahead of Abby, who as first girl also bettered Yusuke s gross score by one shot, but handicaps are what make this game so captivating. Behind Yusuke came Hugh, Thomas and Theo all tied on 31. In the Junior section another nail-biter saw Oscar prevail by one shot over Izzy. Good golf and good weather what more could you ask for? Overcast Grey clouds looked ominous as Mr Bywater and a squad of seven golfers set off for St Andrew s to compete in St Leonard s National Junior Championship; the first taste of a big competition for some. Sophie was off the tee early and posted a challenging score. She remained the clubhouse leader for some time and was then joined by Izzy and Yusuke as clubhouse leaders in their respective sections. Alas, only Yusuke managed to hold on for a great victory, following Mr Bywater s instruction not to finish second again! Izzy and Sophie were pipped at the post in the final 15 minutes to enjoy second positions. Abby showed her potential on debut by winning the longest drive competition. Oscar and Matthew were both given 50 shots to spend on as many holes as possible, so to get themselves into double figures was a creditable performance Yusuke is now their target for the future. Hugh enjoyed his day and made a good addition to the squad. Well done once again to all the podium placements.

Boys Hockey Come rain or shine (or snow!) the Spring term was packed full of hockey fixtures giving every boy the opportunity to represent the Prep School. The 1st XI had a tough time this season; only winning matches in tournament hockey. They did, however, manage a 3rd place finish in the IAPS qualifier and were very unlucky not to get more from their trip to the Strathallan Sixes tournament as they played some excellent hockey as individuals and as a team. The 2nd XI managed one win from four matches against tough opposition. The boys worked hard this year and their hockey skills and performances came on leaps and bounds. The 3rd XI enjoyed the most successful season with three wins, two losses and a draw. The 4th XI experienced a short season of polarised results; winning one match 7-0 but losing two on the wrong end of a similar score line! Many of the boys in the 3rd and 4th XIs were playing hockey for the first time this year, and they should be very pleased with their performances and the progress that they made. The U11A team had a fantastic season; winning all of their weekly fixtures against very good opposition. They finished 3rd in the IAPS qualifier, which comes as a bit of a blow to the boys as they know they underperformed in tournament Hockey this year. This should provide motivation for next season as a number of the side have another year at U11. The U11B also had a very positive season; recording four wins, a loss, and a draw. The boys worked really hard as a team, and kept the A team on their toes to keep their places! The U9As had a very positive and successful season winning two, drawing two and losing two matches. The U9B team enjoyed a number of matches this season. For some boys it was their first experience of hockey and both teams made good progress and should be very proud of their efforts.

Girls Hockey The girls had a busy hockey season with around 65 matches and five tournaments. The U13 squad enjoyed two days of pre-season training at the beginning of September to sharpen up their skills before their first matches. Both the U13A and B teams lost a couple of their early matches but worked hard and from early October did not lose a match a wonderful achievement indicative of their efforts. The A team reached the quarter finals of the Fettes Tournament and enjoyed their trip to York to compete in the tournament held at Pocklington School. They finished their season off in the Spring Term by winning the plate of the East District cup, having drawn earlier in the competition with the eventual winners of the cup. The U13C and D teams both appreciated more matches during the term, and enjoyed some wins and numerous draws. The U12 squad travelled down to Repton School for the U12 IAPS regional hockey tournament which, although disappointing in terms of results, was an invaluable experience. The U11A team won all their matches bar one during their season which was a superb result. They also retained the trophy at the Loretto Tournament. All of the T Torm girls travelled down to York as one squad and won all three of their matches during the mini tour. The U11B and U9 teams had a mixed season of results but showed great improvement in skill and game awareness and this was reflected in some good wins at the end of the season. Congratulations must also go to Alice, Samantha, Sophie and Poppy who were all selected for the Dandylions with both Alice and Sophie going on to be selected for the U 14 East District Squad.

Netball Following an inspiring coaches training day from ex England netballer Tracy Neville, the netball coaching staff enthused our teams to the successes they achieved this season. Both the U13A and U11A teams were unbeaten in fixtures and the U13B and C only dropped one game during their matches. The U13A team won the Ardvreck Tournament and enjoyed the experience of playing at Uppingham School at the IAPS Regional Tournament. The young U 11B team had a good season, losing only two matches and increasing in confidence as they developed a greater game awareness. The U9 girls all enjoyed playing in their weekly matches and mini tournaments, gaining lots of skills and tactical awareness, as they became more used to the competitive game. Five girls were selected for the Dandylion netball teams: Alice, Samantha, Catherine, Sophie and Grace. Once again the Dandylions were dominant and won both their matches against the WOSPS. Rounders We have dodged the rain showers and have managed to play a full rounders fixture list this term! It has been a successful season overall with the Under 11 As being unbeaten and the Under 13 A and Bs losing only three between them! These three teams have taken a more modern style of playing and their fielding has become slicker and more dynamic! Their hitting has also become more intelligent as they have learnt to place the ball more into the spaces. The Under 11 B team had a slow start to the season but finished it off well with wins against Cargilfield, Craigclowan and Belhaven. The Under 9s enjoyed a busy term of fixtures and had some super and convincing wins along the way. Their batting became much stronger and this was reflected in some higher scoring games. Samantha, Alice, Imogen and Catherine represented the Dandylions in matches against the WOSPS at Cargilfield in June. Catherine and Imogen represented the B team who won convincingly on the day while Alice and Samantha were in the A team. It was a slightly more even game in the first innings which made the second half gripping, however the Dandy s found their batting power and went on to win comfortably.

Rugby The 1st XIII enjoyed a great deal of success this season, losing only two matches out of the seven played. The team, which contained only one 1st team player from the previous year, gelled extremely well and made remarkable progress in their individual and team performances. Four of the boys Zak, Harry, Finlay and Monty were also rewarded for their efforts over the course of the season through selection for the Dandylions squad to play the WOSPS. Further to this, Zak, Harry and Finlay went on to represent the Scottish Prep Schools in their victory over a strong Edinburgh Select side in a match played in front of around 150 people! The 2nd XIII won three of the five games played in convincing fashion. Many boys in the 2nd XIII were playing their first season at 13-a-side rugby, and will likely be pushing for places in the 1st XIII next year. The 3rd XIII had a tough set of fixtures with Merchiston Castle, but showed great heart and commitment in adversity and did themselves proud. The U11A team had a tough old time of it this year. Notable achievements include victory over close rivals Cargilfield, and getting to the semi-final of the Lorettos 7s tournament. The U11Bs were the only team to achieve an unbeaten season, with a number of players making great progress along the way. Well done to the boys for their efforts and performances. More of the same in the future please! The U9A rugby team greatly improved throughout the year putting on some high-scoring and thrilling matches, winning five of their eleven games over the course of the season. The U9Bs managed to chalk up a win and a draw in the four games that they played this season, and again the boys should be pleased with the amount that their rugby has developed this year.

Skiing In January, pupils had the opportunity to start race training at Hillend and we selected a team for the Scottish Prep Schools Skiing Championships. On the morning of the event it was a rather typical day at Glenshee and visibility was very poor. A short course had been set on the Giant Slalom course. 84 children took part from Prep Schools across Scotland. Each racer had two runs over the same course. All 12 of our competitors showed tremendous resilience. At times the visibility was so poor, only the next gate could be picked out of the gloom. Matthew won a silver medal in the Boys U11 competition. Sophie took a bronze in the Girls U13 competition and the boys team Matthew, Yusuke Tanaka, Harry and Jack rounded off our day by winning a bronze. A team of five then travelled to Passo Tonale, Italy on Sunday 8th March to compete in the IAPS Ski Championships. This was the first time Fettes Prep School had competed and we were the first Scottish Prep School ever to enter. The first day consisted of the group getting some practice runs in with an instructor. We were paired with St. Martin s, Ampleforth and Alleyn s School, Dulwich which was a lovely opportunity for our pupils to make some new friends! On Tuesday the team completed a qualifying run and achieved some excellent times. The U13 team of Sophie, Yusuke, Matthew and Jack went through to the Championship competition and Selena went through as an individual U9 into the Plate competition. The competition took place on Thursday and it was an amazing experience for all our pupils. There were 116 competitors in the Championship and 120 competitors in the Plate. Conditions were excellent and our team made the most of them, achieving some super times. We were held in suspense until the awards ceremony in the evening. The team achieved second place in the mixed U13 Championships which was an amazing achievement for their first time in the event. The Championships was very much a team competition but individually the Fettes Prep School pupils also did very well. Matthew came 8th overall (highest U11 time), Yusuke came 25th, Sophie 32nd (7th highest girl) and Jack 107 with Selena (one of the youngest competitors in the event) coming 81st in the Plate competition. This was a wonderful event for our pupils to attend and what amazing results they achieved!

Our Lovely Leavers We asked our 2nd Formers, some of whom have been with us since M Form, to choose just a few words to sum up their time at Fettes Prep. Good times with all my friends Wonderful Extraordinary Happy
