3 Today we welcome officials, players and supporters from Stowupland Falcons to the Victory ground for this afternoons Division 1 fixture. Two players have joined the 1st team 100 club in recent weeks. Kevin Firman made his 100th first team appearance against AFC Kesgrave, after making his first teamdebut on Sept 7th 2013 in the 2-1 win against Saxmundham, following a couple of years playing for the Reserves. Luke Taylor made his 100th appearance against Barham Athletic after making his first teamdebut 6 weeks after Kevin against Saxmundham in the cup on 26th October 2013! I hope they both continue to play many more games for the club. I see from the SIL website that we are top of the Sportsmanship table. This is a real credit to all the adult players who play for the First team, Reserves and A Team. The club has a long history of trying to play in the correct way, I hope that this continues along with the financial benefits that follow. On a personal note I dislike all the pre Christmas hype during November, but on Friday 8th December 7.30pm at West Road Church we have our Sporting 87 First Team Notes Christmas Carol service, please put the date in your dairy and encourage as many people to attend as possible. We are delighted to confirm that Linvoy Primus will be joining us and sharing with us what its like to be a professional footballer at Christmas. Finally a thank you to Rachel Balmer and Sarah Flack who have stepped in to help with the refreshments after games while Frances Johnson undertakes her cancer treatment programme. I m sure everyones thoughts and prayers are with her, Nigel and their family at this tough time. I hope you enjoy this afternoons fixture. Jonathan Warnock First Team Manager Our aim is to be a caring, friendly and conscientious family practice providing high quality dental care with good customer service to all our patients and clients. 112 Northgate Street Bury St Edmunds IP33 1HP Telephone

4 With two great results the past couple of games have been two of the best and most exciting matches I have watched all session, but previously we (Sporting 87 Reserves), were not getting the results we hoped for. From our first match, this seasons games have been intense and fast paced, however our results have often not reflected the teams performance. Some of our best games have been against teams in the top 3 of the league, we just needed to remove moments when concentration was lost under that pressure. On the other hand the pressure to get results has pushed personal performances to the next level. Goalkeeper Oliver Chaplin has made several match changing saves. At left back using his fast thinking, speed and skill, Danny Hill consistently breaks down any operation player who tries to battle through Danny's side of the back 4. Danny isn't the only youth player who has made very strong first impressions in adult football. U18 players Chris White, Tommy Martin and Harry Williams have also made a great impact when playing in the mid field and upfront along with George Chandler who has shown he is a very dominant player and has proved it in several positions. But the squad is held together by their experienced teammates. Matt Brown continues to take ownership in centre midfield but leaves the goal scoring to our captain Reserve Team Report Alex Scott-Ruddock. With Pedro using his outstanding speed and skill in centre mid against Ipswich Athletic Reserves, opposition players lunged in with panicked tackles taking Pedro down in the box. Alex scored the penalty to win us our well deserved long overdue 3 points. This win gave us the momentum needed to face top of the league Coplestonians the week after. Once again we proved that we can compete with any team in our division and dominated the pitch putting pressure on their defence. But we found ourselves 1-0 down after conceding a penalty. Our Goalkeeper Olly pushed up to thehalfway line to take a free kick in the 94th minute and last kick of the game. This was placed perfectly into the box and after several last second attempts, Ryan Mclees passed the ball across the goal setting up Alex to score the equaliser. Another outstanding team performance to push us further away from the bottom of the league table. 5 Welcome to the VSG. As I write these notes I am looking out at a beautiful winter scene the sky is blue (always a great colour), the birds are on the feeders and the leaves on the trees are starting to change colour from shades of green to vibrant reds, oranges and golds. A great time of year for playing footy. Have you noticed that in the far corner pitch the subs also get to play in the vast pile of wind-blown leaves? In a football context we know that things are constantly changing. As I said in a recent programme I have now seen my team Coventry play in all 4 senior divisions, unfortunately waving at Brighton going in the opposite direction. Footy managers are also constantly changing, a recent article I read states that in the top 4 divisions between Oct 1997 and Nov 2017 clubs have employed an average of 12 managers each, with Crystal Palace employing 21 in this period. I am also reading Ian Wright s auto-biography at the moment. In it he writes about the disappointment of playing for England in qualifiers and then missing out on tournaments as managers change their thinking. Of course in our own lives things can change pretty quickly too. In my mid-twenties I was defending a through ball when my foot went into a divot twisting my knee. Ultimately I had damaged my ACL and torn the cartilage. This effectively stopped me playing football. Although this did not impact Chaplain s Chat the football world at large it certainly affected my waistline. It has been said that the only two certainties in life are death and taxes, however I will add a third. In the Bible the writer to the Hebrews states that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. In a world that can sometimes seem like constant shifting sands we can put our trust in the One who will never change, who will not change his opinion of us, who will not give up on us, and who will never forget us. Hopefully you have the inaugural Sporting Carol Service in your diary. We are holding it on Friday 8 th December, 7.30 at West Road Church. We will be starting our Christmas celebrations and also continuing the club s 30 th Anniversary celebrations. Christmas jumpers very welcome. See you on the touchline. Tim Banks Sporting 87 Club Chaplain Sporting 87 You are all invited to our first Sporting 87 Carol Service. This will be a great way to start your Christmas celebrations and also to continue our 30th Anniversary celebration. The service will be at West Road Church in BSE 8th December at 7.30 to 8.30 pm There will be carols, readings and guest speaker Linvoy Primus. We will also be serving coffee and mince pies. The service is open to all the Sporting 'family' and we hope to see you there.

6 Youth Report Foundation Section Review Footy Cubs and Tigers Every season we see our older and more able Tigers transfer to regular Club teams; and as a result this September we had three new U8 teams join the Primary Section to play in the Suffolk FA WAYS League. This left a few younger Tigers and our Cubs to make friends with newcomers that have steadily grown in good numbers over the last month. Indeed our Thursday Cubs and Tigers sessions are already full, with places now only available on Wednesdays. This is very encouraging, especially as the session uptake has been through only word-of-mouth recommendation, i.e. we rarely have to promote these sessions. Tigers have the option to also attend Saturday morning training at the Victory Sports Ground and take part in local 4v4 round robin festivals at venues in West Suffolk. Unfortunately attendance of the festivals by other club U7 teams has been sporadic which has led to a number of schedule changes, but as other clubs increase their numbers and parents acclimatise to the commitment we re hoping for the festivals to become better attended. The first festival to be hosted by Sporting 87 FC is set for 18 th November, so we re hoping for good attendance by our Tigers and by other clubs; and of course some good weather, which is always an essential part of a successful event for our youngest players. Junior Section Review (U12 to U14) The Junior Section, which marries with school key stage 3 year groups, comprises of teams from U12 (9v9), U13 (11v11 ¾ pitch) and U14 (11v11 full-size pitch) year groups; a total of eight teams, four at U12, three at U13 and one U14 team. All U12 and U13 teams compete in the WAYS League. The league goes from strength to strength with the addition of an additional U12 Haverhill team and two U13 teams from Kennett and Haverhill Town this season. It is at U12 that the WAYS League introduces its special Blended scoring system where as previously, in line with national FA rules, U11 and below teams compete for Fair Play points. The blended score is a combination of the same fair play points with the actual score of the game, thus slightly adjusting the focus of games to performance without loosing the fair play system which has proved to be a great tool to manage the children s behaviour without the abruptness and cost/administration of the standard FA card system. With a focus on player development it has been great to see how the WAYS league creates such a positive environment to encourage this progression. L. E. H LTD. 7 U12 Alpha lead their blended league table with Delta in second place. U12 Sigma and Zeta are mid table but Zeta has a game in hand. There have also been some excellent performances this season by all three U13 Sporting teams whilst at the same time holding true to the Sporting beliefs of player rotation, equal game time and opportunity for everyone. Our only U14 team, Sporting 87 Omega, are in the SYFL. They have made great progress in Division 4; currently sitting in top place, and are the leading goal scorers. Their outplaying and dominance of other teams, combined with their strength and versatility, is a true product of the excellent development environment offered by the WAYS League, and of course the great work of their dedicated coaches. The U12 and U13 teams playing in the FA WAYS league take a break from 11-aside during December and January for the winter futsal season. This is a positive change from last year when the futsal season only lasted one month. Futsal, to those unfamiliar, is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game that is widely played across the world. The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill and ability in situations of high pressure. Many of the world s top footballers, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, played futsal in their youth. Senior Section Review (U15 & U16) We have five teams that represent our Senior Section, four playing in the U15 WAYS League Division and an U16 team in the SYFL. At U15 the players step up to longer 80 minute games and size 5 balls their final change before the full adult format. The additional time has helped the larger squads provide more playing time for their keen players, but it has put a strain on one of the teams that needs a player or two to make strengthen the squad for games (enquiries please contact the Club Administrator). The current blended league table is looking very healthy for the U15 Sporting teams that have taken the top three places. It s been good to see that all of the teams have adopted a passing style of football that will stand them in good stead in the future. It seems that the local water supply has again delayed the growth spurts of our adolescent age group, and they are quite often looking the more physically challenged teams when lined up on the pitch, but through hard work and creativity, this is not affecting their results. Mixed results mean that our U16 team currently sit mid table in Division 2 (one of three large divisions of 11 teams each). This is a key academic year for this age group with demand for study time increasing through season as GCSE final exams approach, and so presently there is no scheduled cup competition. Mindful of this the team coaches will be arranging any additional games sparingly. Qualifying on their 16 th birthday, several of the squad have been given opportunities to experience U18 Thurlow Nunn and Adult team games. We look forward to seeing many more take up this challenge as we move through the season and increase our Transition (to adult and U18 footy) activities.

10 My story - Victor Anichebe Victor s injury victory Stiker Victor Anichebe discovered that his faith in God helped him through the most difficult time in his professional career. Being kept on the sidelines by injury is hard for any athlete and despite being a towering 6 ft 3 inch Anichebe was forced into a layoff during his time at Everton. He said; There was plenty of times when I was at low ebb. To come back from 12 months, get injured again, and then again, I began to ask whether it was worth it. It s hard for people to know and really understand what it is like being injured. It is not just physical, it is mental too. You can see your team mates out there when you should be playing with them. Your friends and family tip toe around, not knowing whether they should talk to you about being injured. I am a Christian but it was difficult trying to keep my faith at times. It was easy to think it is all rubbish, and didn t mean anything, but it does. My mum was supportive and said God had given me this ability so I should use it. She almost forced me to continue with my faith when I was in danger of loosing it. If you stay with something, you will get to the other side, and it got me through some hard situations. Steven Pienaard, my Everton team mate at the time, also has his faith. I am not saying that it makes you a great player, but it helps. It s always nice to think you have that extra push behind you. Throughout his career, Anichebe, who joined Beijing Enterprises after being at Sunderland, has been renowned for his strengths and power on and off the ball, often criticised for being too imposing at times, but he believes his stature is a gift from God. He added; I don t need to go to the gym and lift weights to be big. When I come off the pitch I am chilled, normal, not this aggressive person. Some people say too laid back because I don t do enough. But I might be something else on the pitch. Look at boxers; you see them praying before a fight, and then they try to punch someone s head off! I am big and powerful, I use the attributes that God has given me.
