3 COMMODORE Frederic Berg One month in and there s no rest for the weary. From the blow of losing our General Manager on the last day of 2017 to waking up on January 1st with the reality of team management, the start of the year has been, well, let s just say exciting. For those naysayers to the idea of team management, you ll be happy to hear the Flag Officers will be evaluating the team approach in the two weeks following March 31 on itʻs applicability to the Club and reporting their conclusions to the Board of Directors. I am the eternal optimist and think it s a great idea, but am acutely aware there are skeptics with a different point of view. From the experience of our last two managers, I would say not having to work around a manager will greatly simplify management of the Club. Also, unlike years past, we are blessed with a well educated staff that cares deeply about the Club and has tremendous expertise they bring to each department. Together, I believe they will be able to overcome many challenges, including those a single manager would not be expected to. The team leaders are; Mark Voeller in Maintenance; Jesse Andrews in Junior Activities; Matt Carroll in Accounting; Kuʻulei Miars in the Bar and Tracey Akamine in the front office. Please give them your encouragement for their (and the Clubʻs) success. If you have any questions or concerns about the team management approach, please feel free to contact me at I am always happy to hear from members. Before getting started on too many projects this year, the board has initiated a limited master planning effort with Group 70. The results of the 2017 survey coupled with the planning effort will guide the board in planing projects and determining if the locations of activities as they are currently laid out on the Club property are still in the best locations or if adjustments are needed. With the new year comes new volunteers. Please welcome Tom Valentine as the Chair of the newly formed Corinthian Committee; Aaron Phillips and Rusty Lilico as the new Co-chairs of House and Grounds; and Wayne Reis as our new Port Captain. Also, please welcome back Danielle Hull as Trophy Chair; Leslie Johnson as Telltales Editor; Roselle Nottage as Entertainment Chair; Kai Andrade as Junior Activities Chair; Mike Olsen as Membership Chair and Pete Stokka as Regatta Chair. If you bump into any of these volunteers, please show them your appreciation. We also have two new employees we should welcome to the Club. They are Brad McGuire as the new administrative assistant in the front office on Saturdays through Tuesdays and Matt Carroll as the new accountant. Please show your aloha whenever you encounter these new employees. On January 18th there was a Zoning Board of Appeals hearing on an appeal of the Department of Planning and Permitting declaratory ruling on the appropriateness of our yacht club activities in a residential zoning. The request for and appeal of the DPP declaratory ruling essentially is an attack on a variance awarded to the Yacht Club in 1955 allowing a yacht club use in a residential neighborhood. The DPP is has ruled that KYC has every right to act as a yacht club under the 1955 variance and that maintaining boats is an ancillary activity of being a yacht club and therefore allowed as well. The Zoning Board is currently hearing an appeal of the DPP ruling. The hearing was continued until March 1. At that time, KYC should be able to bring witnesses in front of the Zoning Board. The KYC Board is vigorously defending our right to continue the activities that have been allowed for many years. Your humble Commodore, whose sole responsibility this year are the commodes is off and running. We are continuing to make headway with our goal of managing the Club without a General Manager. I know this may surprise and shock many of you, but the system seems to be working. We looked at our staff and confirmed that we had some truly talented and dedicated individuals working for us and we wanted to give them an opportunity to grow and enrich their talents. We ve established a Team approach to the management of the Club with five different teams all working independently and yet as a whole. The team leaders of each of the different departments are meeting weekly to talk through and devise solutions to many of the different situations that arise in the day to day running of a multi-million dollar business. We ve set a ninety day deadline (March 31) to analyze and determine if the system is worthy of continuing/revising or discontinuing. More to come on this later. Pacific Cup is already beginning to gear up and begin preparations for a fun event. If you haven t already done so, now is the time to register for one of the many committees that guide the Club through the Pacific Cup event. See the office staff or one of the Commodores for more information. Aloha, Ralph Foulger Vice Commodore VICE COMMODORE Ralph Foulger REAR COMMODORE Mike Van Woerkom I can t believe it s already February! A lot has already happened and I hope everyone is taking advantage of the activities and opportunities. I m happy to report that the Sailing Rules S eminar, J udge T raining, and R ace O fficial T raining held in January were a success. Thanks tor everyone who attended. If you happened to miss the first Rules Seminar don t worry there will be one every month as we make our way through the Racing Rules of Sailing for The next seminar will be on Feb 13. February is an exciting time for the club as Opening D ay (Feb 3) and the Fishing Fleet sponsored Boat B lessing kick off the racing season for Class boat racing starts on the 10th with IRF kicking off their season on the 18th. Of course, this couldn t be possible without the wonderful volunteers who act as R ace C ommittee. We are always looking for help so if you have some time and want to help with R ace C ommittee please contact our Regatta Chair (Pete Stokka) and he will get you on the list. For the skippers, make sure you re signed up as well so your boat is eligible for S eason ' s P oints. Anyone want some drink tickets? Three can be yours but you re going to have to work for them. The next bulkhead race will be held on Sunday the 11th. Come on down and sail fast and you may just be walking away with three tickets! Bulkhead racing has been great this winter but there will be even more opportunities to show what you and your crews have as Thursday Night Bulkhead racing starts up at the end of February. Hope to see everyone there. If racing isn t your thing but you love being out on the water don t miss out on the cru i se to Molokai. The ORF fleet will be heading outer island for the P resident s D ay weekend. See the notice on page 4 for more information. As you can see the year is off to a great start with much more ahead. I m looking forward to seeing you at the club and out on the water. 10 TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell The latest Tennis Fleet potluck in the Longhouse had an Asian theme and tons of fabulous food!!! And the wonderful dresses, Chinese style, that hadn t seen the light of day, or evening, were fully appreciated by all 50 attendees. Starting before 6:00 pm as the early birds arrived, the event continued with messages and stories from Kit Beuret, standing in lines to get some of the delicious dishes, and lots of visiting with friends and fellow tennis players. Liz Fletcher was a guest of JoAnn Goebert s from England and Mark Denzer s mother, Tempe Denzer, joined us for a very nice evening. Speaking of tennis players, there were 24 signed up for the tournament held earlier in the day. Although there was great tennis played, because of several games were called off due to rain and we were not able to award any trophies. Players were Kit and Terry Beuret, Linnea and Steve Brooks, Shari Cotton, Betsy Denzer, JoAnn Goebert, John and Sime Gross, Pam Isayama, Wayne Jackson, Susie Jannuzzi, Teri Lathrop, Richard Leclerc, Andy and Connie Lopez, Liz Meierdiercks, Harvey Minsky, Dana Nottage, Aaron and Sherri Phillips, Rob Rietow, Cindy Siok, and Fran Tannen. Wow!!! What a great turnout. Just a note on the rain if anyone needs water for their gardens and they live near the club, just ask the fleet to schedule a tournament and then get out the umbrellas! The fleet is sponsoring a Blood Mobile drive in March..watch for information if you are able to donate. And the KYC fundraiser for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life is coming up Saturday, May 19 so mark your calendars you won t want to miss this fun event.
