Mr S. Benzid, Curriculum Leader: IT & Computing, write: On Saturday 20 th January, five Year 8 students represented Stanborough School in the Robot Rumble Final Event ran by MBDA hosted at Hertfordshire University. This is the 11 th instalment of this competition with Stanborough competing in the past eight competitions. The event was based on the VEX 2017/18 challenge In the Zone. The team had to initially present the design of the robot to an expert panel of judges. During the presentation the team had to explain their design decisions and how they tackled the challenge. The next stage of the day was the league stage, this is where they played six matches. Winning four and losing two, ending this stage in 4 th place. The final stage before the knockout competition was the alliance selection. The team were approached by John Warner School and graciously accepted. From this point our team went on an unbeaten run that took them all the way to the final, winning the knockout competition comfortably, an excellent feat! They displayed real quality. The judges then gave out the awards during the closing ceremony, with Stanborough School winning the prestigious Engineering & Skills Award. Our Robot was designed and developed by Luke Barron, Joshua Imafidon, Lucy Woolmore, Charlie Greasby, & Oscar Saunders Well done to all the students who competed in the Robot Rumble competition and a thank you to Matt Schofield and Alex our MBDA Mentor for helping to organise the day as well as the support they have provided to the students throughout the build-up to this event. We look forward to seeing what is in store for this young robotics team So watch this space!

Year 8 Art & Textiles Trip Creative Career Opportunities Miss A. Barnard, Subject Leader: Art, writes: On Thursday 18 th January, Year 8 students visited the Harry Potter Studios in Leavesden to explore career opportunities within the creative industry. This experience gave students the exciting opportunity to see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of a movie from costume design and props to set design and animation. The collaborative components that are brought together to create this worldwide franchise has left the students inspired and in awe of the endless possibilities that creative subjects can provide in the big wide world. The minute you enter the Harry Potter studios, the two dimensional perspective of a movie screen comes to life in front of your eyes. As students entered through the Great Hall at the start of the tour, they were immediately immersed into the fascinating world of visual effects including fire, water and snow. Set designs were brought to life through talented art work and the revelation of infamous special effects used within the movies such as the exploding magic potions and the moving portraits in the oil paintings. Students were also even given the opportunity to explore the use of a green screen as they flew on a broom stick against a variety of different simulated backgrounds. The extraordinary artistry, technology and talent that went into the making of the Harry Potter film has provided our students with inspiration and insight into the creative career opportunities ahead of their Year 8 option choices later this term. When I arrived at the studio it was like watching my imagination from the books come to life. Everything was so intricate and detailed and creatively made. Laura Wells 8K The trip to the Harry Potter studios allowed me to find out more information on visual effects and costume design which has influenced my career path and opportunities. Aaryan King 8O Maths Fest Edgar Kager, 12 Hatfield, writes: Have you ever seen an 80 year old computer? Have you ever uncovered the hidden pattern in sunflower seeds? Have you ever thought about what random really means? All of these topics were explored at Maths Fest 2018 in Birmingham s New Alexandra Theatre on Tuesday 23rd January. A group of Y12s and Y13s, along with Mrs Coldwell, attended the event which gave them the opportunity to peer into the innovative engineering behind the wartime Enigma machine and the ingenuity of those who cracked its codes, to observe the Golden ratio underpinning nature's spirals, and to learn that humans are extremely bad at recreating or recognising true randomness. At the Maths Slam competition during the festival students Hannah Imafidon and Joe Lowton presented a thought-provoking mathematical equation known as Drake's Equation and approximated conservatively that there might be six broadcasting intelligent civilizations in the Milky Way. For their engaging presentation they were presented with a certificate signed by well-known mathematical communicators Matt Parker, Rob Eastaway, Hannah Fry and James Grime. STOP PRESS..Stanborough s team have been ranked third in the National Cipher Challenge, which is by far our highest ever place. Unfortunately, we narrowly avoided the 800 and 1000 prizes awarded to teams ranked above us.

The Science Museum Visits Stanborough School Miss R. Hooper, Subject Leader: Science, writes: On Thursday 18 th January the Science Museum Outreach team joined us to perform some excellent science-based shows for Years 7-9. Years 7 and 9 took part in the It Takes Guts show where they learned of the journey of food through the digestive system. There were plenty of screeches and grimaces as the students watch footage of a camera travelling from the mouth to the rectum! Years 7 and 8 learnt about the properties of materials and atomic structure in the Material World show where they watched a jelly baby combust and a hydrogen balloon explode! The students (and teachers) had a great time and we hope to see the Science Museum Outreach team again in the future. The Science Museum visit taught me a lot more than I knew before, like how different metals burn into different colours. Lucy Woolmore 8B I enjoyed the Science Museum visit because it was very interesting and it was exciting to watch. Millie Battersby 8A It was very interesting and funny! Charley Lettis 8B I thought it was really good and well presented. It was also fun because we could go up and do the experiment as well. Josh Monery 8K Beth Makowski, 10S, writes: WHYC Parliament Trip On the 16 th January, the Welwyn Hatfield Youth Council got the opportunity to spend the day at the Houses of Parliament. This included a tour around the House of Parliament and a meeting with Welwyn Hatfield s MP Grant Shapps. We set off on the train early in the morning and went on our way. Before we headed in, we had to go through very safe security. Once we were in the main hall (which was absolutely freezing) we met our tour guide and went off. We headed through to be taught the history of the house and the changes that had been made since it s first opening. Then we went into the House of Lords. There was a seat that shone of gold kept especially for the monarchy and the red seats are only to be seated in by the special members of the House of Lords. This was the room used when making important decisions during World War Two and if you look closely you can see the indent Winston Churchill made in the table with his ring. We then went back out to watch the speaker procession before a meeting took place in the House of Commons. We then made our way to go and speak to Grant Shapps. On our way we were shown a beautiful piece of artwork recently placed in honour of women s rights to vote. It was a light sculpture with the colours of the suffragette movement. Next we met Grant Shapps where we discussed the topics we felt important as a Youth Council. We asked about his views in the recent antisocial behaviour in places, his views on Donald Trump, how he felt about the change in the GCSEs and mental health and suicide prevention for young adults. He was very happy to share his opinions on the matters we felt strong about. He also happily complied to supporting our movement #justtalk which is about improving mental health in young boys. Overall I really enjoyed the day. I got to see Parliament and learn about all the history behind it. It was also lovely to talk with Grant Shapps about important topics. Thank you to the Welwyn Hatfield Youth Council for such an amazing day!

Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Sports Report 17th January - 24th January Mr P. Harris, Curriculum Leader: PE, writes: Girls Netball Stanborough s netball teams performed really well in their recent fixtures against Yavneh and Hertswood, winning three out of the four games. The Year 7s produced the biggest winning margin as they comfortably beat Yavneh. The girls played at a quick tempo from the start and were able to put Yavneh under pressure in attack and defence. Miss Bowen was extremely proud of the girls performance and struggled to pick a Girl of the Game, however Freya Dobson was given the award for her fantastic play on the ball and her sustained effort throughout. The Year 8s also put on a very strong show against Yavneh and were comfortable winners by 10 points. The girls were fantastic in possession of the netball and very rarely allowed Yavneh into the game. They were deserved winners and Emma Hudson was handed Girl of the Game. The Year 8s followed this fantastic performance up with an even better display against Hertswood. The girls dominated the game from the start and were soon out of sight. In terrible conditions due to wind and rain the girls never let up and their effort for the full course of the game was extremely impressive. The Girl of the Game could have been given to many of the girls but Miss Bowen awarded it to Aaliyah Annis. Stanborough s Year 9s couldn t quite complete a full sweep in the fixtures as they went down by three points to Hertswood. The game was played in very difficult conditions and both sides struggled to keep control of the ball. With five minutes to go the scores were level and it could have gone either way, unfortunately for Stanborough it didn t go their way and they were beaten. It was still a good performance from the girls and they will look to build on this in their next match. The Girl of the Game was given to Lucy Richardson. Boys Football Stanborough 17-1 Yavneh Stanborough 11-1 Yavneh Stanborough 14-0 Hertswood Stanborough 4-7 Hertswood Year 8 County Cup Last 16 - Kings Langley 5-1 Stanborough The only team left in the cup was Stanborough Year 8s and they had their run in the competition finished by Kings Langley on Monday. Mr Minion took the boys over on Monday afternoon and found the playing conditions very difficult with the pitch very muddy and very wet and on a big slope. Stanborough won the toss and decided to play with slope first half and hoped to get a good lead as they expected playing conditions to deteriorate. Stanborough had a host of chances but couldn t find the back of the net. Eventually Latrell Paul managed to score for Stanborough but they conceded towards the half time whistle. With playing conditions now virtually unplayable and a big slope to defend against Stanborough were always going to find things hard and unfortunately couldn t cope with the Kings Langley onslaught. Eventually the home side ran out comfortable winners but Stanborough can be proud for making the last 16 in a very competitive and big competition. Man of the Match was awarded to Owen Thake who never gave up running throughout.

Languages Event in Cambridge Chloe Fisher 9B and Annabel Dunstan 9A, write: On the 16 th January, eight students from Years 8 and 9, accompanied by Mrs Elliott, attended a languages taster day at Cambridge University. The day began with a talk from one of the college staff and four ambassadors who currently study languages at the university. We discovered some surprising statistics about languages around the world, for example: only 5% of the world s population speak English! We took a lesson in the language that we are currently being taught at Stanborough, French or Spanish. This involved watching adverts and experiencing a lesson from the university professors, which was really enjoyable. Then we had taster sessions in two languages we had never used before we didn t know a single word of either of them to begin with! We had a lesson in Arabic, learning a new alphabet and discovering an interesting script. We started with basic introductions, e.g hello = ahlan, and introduced ourselves in Arabic to students from other schools. A lesson in Portuguese involved learning numbers and greetings. As you can imagine, this was slightly easier to read but pronunciation was complicated. Overall, the day was fun and interesting and inspired us all to consider languages further in our education. We are all proud to say that we can now officially write our names in Arabic! We would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Siddiqui for organising this fantastic and stimulating event and to Mrs Elliott for accompanying us and making it very enjoyable. It was a very enjoyable day with a good opportunity to learn new languages! Amy-May Ashley 9A I enjoyed the Arabic because it was different to anything I ve ever done before. Ellie-Anne Hart 9A For all KS4 Students Year 8 Work Shadowing Reminder Mrs E. Ahmad, Student Career and Enterprise Leader, writes: If your child has not secured a work shadowing placement please remember they should be in school in full school uniform for the day. There is a planned careers insight day for them in the LRC where they will register in the morning and afternoon. Year 9 Parent Teacher Interviews Mrs M. Ridgeon, Year 9 Leader, writes: Year 9 PTI will take place on Wednesday 31st January. This is an opportunity to discuss your son/daughter s start to their GCSE option subjects and explore how their core subjects are progressing in the GCSE format. The session will start at 4pm in the hall. Please make appointments using the online booking system. We look forward to seeing you there.
