1 Parents, Having been in education for 28 years and being alive for 54 years, I have had a vast amount of experiences with people relations. As a child I learned quickly that adults react differently to the exact same situation. For example, Mrs. Oakes (68, Beehive hairstyle, carries her purse with two hands in front of her) my second grade teacher, overheard my entry into a burping contest between me and a few of my friends. Her reaction was quite different than when my dad heard a similar noise come out of my small body. Mrs. Oakes reaction was a stern finger pointing, and talking to in the hall. My Dad s was an atta boy followed by a congratulatory that was a good one! as we drove out to check the cows in the truck. Human relations is a two way street. While most of the time we teach our children what they should do in different situations, we sometimes forget to expose them to the fact that every person they come into contact with will react differently to them. This difference in reaction will cause many emotions in our children including them being happy, sad, confused, bewildered and all emotions in between. I tell students that they need to know their audience and that being able to anticipate a reaction in that audience is a key to stability in their world, to world peace. I can get on the PA each morning, do the announcements the exact same way, and when I ask different students, staff and parents that may be in the hall, How did you like the Joke of the day? I will get many different responses from Great, It was OK, Bad, I didn't get it or they may hand me a joke that they had written for tomorrow. The exact same joke, many different responses. The exact same question, many different reactions. The exact same Homily, many different takeaways. I have four sisters and a brother. We are all very much alike in our chromosomal make up. 50% of our genetics comes from the short, red haired, Polish mother of ours, and the other 50% comes from that taller, balding farmer, who is our father. But we are all very different in our political views, in our walk of faith, in our career paths and in our parenting styles. Same parents, different lives. Same parents, different beliefs. Same parents, different temperaments. Same parents, different reactions. So when a parent comes to me and informs me that another child is picking on their child, it seems like a pretty straightforward issue to solve. But as a parent, you know with your own children, there is always two sides to every story. As you peel back the onion that is the issue, you begin to understand that most issues in our children s, and in adult s lives, begins with words being said to others, us not knowing, or caring, how others will react, and issues evolve when the reaction is not what we expect. Countries have gone to war over similar situations. Words exchanged, unexpected reactions, escalation of threats, peace is lost. Two adult neighbors that have lived by each other for years. One has a new barking dog, the other neighbor is frustrated and yells at the other neighbor across the fence, neighbors don t speak

2 anymore, peace is lost. Two boys on the playground who have been friends. One tells the other that he can t play on his team at recess because he is not very good, unexpected reaction occurs, peace is lost. Knowing and caring how someone will react to our words or our actions is vital to keeping peace. My loud, obnoxious 2nd grade burp elicited a negative reaction from Mrs. Oakes. My telling a student the other day that our school is a much better place when they are here each day, also elicited a reaction. Know your audience. Anticipate their reaction. Use your words in a manner that promote peace. I hope you enjoy a beautiful weekend and I will see you at Mass with your children! 6 REBEL WRESTLING FOUNDATION Sign Up/Registration Dates for Red Group (Grades K 8): Friday September 16th 5:00pm 8:00pm Football Tailgate (Bubble Parking Lot), or at Tuesday/Thursday practices. RWF wrestling club is ran by RHS Head Coach Wade McClurg and his coaching staff. It is a great opportunity for our CYO Wrestlers to supplement their training with high level coaching on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm 8:00pm. RWF practice sessions run all year around. You can come as much or as little as you want. Competition season begins in November and opportunities continue through the Spring. Gear Order/Spirit Wear Form will be available at sign ups and practices. The RWF Gear Order will be due on October 6th, and we will do another order that is due December 1st. There is a discount card option available to help offset the cost of annual club dues. RONCALLI INVITES ALUMNI AND FRIENDS TO HOMECOMING FESTIVITIES Mark it on your calendar! Roncalli High School s Homecoming is Friday, September 30, 2016 at 7 p.m. against Martinsville High School. The Roncalli Alumni Association is sponsoring a pre game tent party On the Circle beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the Chartrand High School and Kennedy High School Classes of 1967 celebrating 50 years since their graduation. Football players and cheerleaders from the Class of 1992 will also be honored at this event. Come and help celebrate a Roncalli victory at the post game tent party at McQ s Pub & Eatery immediately following the game for alumni and friends with special musical guest, Zanadoo!
