It was nice to have a few days off from school, but we are excited to welcome everyone back for a great second semester. One of our New Year s Resolutions is to keep excellent records and improve communication with families. In order to do this we are asking for your help. It is imperative that we have an up to date home phone number, cell phone numbers, and current addresses. If you have recently had a change, please make sure to call school for any updates. Also, it is important to have your voic set up so that we may leave a message, especially in case of an emergency. Thank you very much for your assistance. Second semester is jam-packed with fun learning opportunities for students and families. Please keep an eye on the newsletter and website for important dates. If you have not already 'liked' our West Lane Elementary - Jackson R2 Facebook page, please do so as this is another way to stay informed with things happening in our building. And finally, I would like to congratulate Mrs. Christine Zirges on receiving the Outstanding Assistant Principal Award from the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals for the Southeast Region. Mrs. Zirges will be recognized at the MAESP Conference in March. We are very lucky to have Mrs. Zirges at West Lane Elementary! As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. The songs sang were "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer", "Frosty the Snowman", "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", and "Jingle Bells". We also have some exciting spirit days coming up this January! Hat Day is our first spirit day in January. Hat Day is going to be on Friday, January 20th. Students who pay $1 to their teacher are able to wear a hat all day long! The money raised from this spirit day will help Student Congress buy prizes for Pennies for Pasta which is happening later on this school year. On Thursday, January 26th, we will have Career Day. Students at West Lane are asked to dress up like the career they want to be when they grow up. Mrs. Zirges Zone West Lane Families, Chilly, winter weather has began creeping into Southeast, Missouri. Please remember, our students will go outside for recess unless the temperature or wind chill are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. For this reason, please remind your child to bring a coat to school each day. If your child does not have a coat, they may not be able to go outside for recess. I also want to stress the importance of timeliness and attendance at school. Our school day begins at 8:00 AM. Please try to have your child at school during each school day from 8:00 AM to 3:10 PM so we can ensure your child is not missing any instructional time. We also understand that illnesses cannot be avoided. If your child is unable to come to school because of an illness, please contact the office to let us know the reason your child will be absent. 3 Library News for January 4th and 5th grade - Our next Mark Twain Club meeting is January 18. Come to the library during lunch and be ready to talk about the nominees. Remember school store is every Tuesday in the gym from 7:25-7:50. There are many school supplies available including pencils, erasers, grippers and pens. Everything is priced at $2 or less, so come shop at the school store for some great items at bargain prices! Amy Heuer Library Media Specialist January Music Note Hello! Happy birthday month to these composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756), Francis Poulenc (1899), and Franz Schubert (1797)! *West Lane Singers has begun, but it s not too late to join! Ask to see the letter I sent home! We meet on Wednesdays before school from 7:20-7:50 am. You will need to plan to eat breakfast before school or eat school breakfast right at 7:50 am in order to be in the rehearsals, so please keep that in mind! 5 th Grade: We are continuing playing recorders and passing belts in Recorder Karate, as well as begin looking at forms of music and the treble staff! Please keep bringing your recorder to music every week! 4 th Grade: Congratulations to all who performed in our concert, The Holiday Spirit! It was a lot of fun! We will begin looking at forms of music and the treble staff, and please keep bringing your recorder to music every week to your regular music class time! If you took excellent photos at the concert, please feel free to send them to me! mgilbert@jr2mail.org 3 rd Grade: We will continue learning about the recorder, reading music and rhythms, folk dances, and start looking at forms, instrument families, and concert music soon! Sing-cerely, Melody Gilbert Nurse Notes ~ January 2017 I believe we are full swing into colder weather ~ Remember those coats, hats, & gloves! Please dress your child appropriately for the colder temperatures. Remember layers of clothing can help keep your child comfortable by allowing them to add or take off a layer. You never know when an extra pair of clothes in a backpack could come in handy as well. There is always the possibility of needing a change of clothing at school, and I may not always have the size needed. If your child has to borrow clothing please return them to school after they have been washed. Colder weather also brings chapped skin and lips. A thin layer of Vaseline over cheeks and backs of hands before going out to play in the cold will help prevent chapping. If skin is already chapped, apply a thin layer before bedtime and after washing hands to aid in healing. Chap Stick and a personal size lotion are great items to keep in a back pack. Good Hand Washing is the best way to prevent an illness! Flu season is certainly here. Just a reminder to stay home if you are sick. If you are feeling symptoms of an illness such as headache, sore throat, cough, body aches, or fatigue, you may have a contagious illness like Influenza. Typically elderly and the very young are not able to fight off infection as well as others and can sometimes have serious complications to an illness that may only have us not feeling well for several days. Remember to wash your hands frequently, cover your sneezes and coughs and do not touch your face, eyes, or nose. Teresa Harrison RN BSN
