2 DIRECTOR S PODIUM Hello MCHS Choir parents! (VOL. 148 of 148) The school year has started off to a quick start in the Choral Department at MCHS! A great many events are about to happen in the next few weeks so here are some things you should know: 1) Varsity Madrigals recently sang a fantastic rendition of our National Anthem and 2 other songs at our MCHS Open House on Aug. 25 th and the Anthem for Senior Night on Fri. Aug. 26th! They did a great job! 2) The All-Choir Blast-off will be held on Fri. Sept. 9 th in the MCHS Cafetorium from 6:00-9:00pm. Our theme this year is Choir Back to the 80 s! Students (and parents!) should wear their favorite 80 s look outfit, and prizes will be given out to best dressed and the winning team. All the students and families are to bring food to the potluck, the students will be singing for the first time this year for their families, and then interact with other choir members through games and competitions. This has become a great tradition for MCHS Choirs, so don t miss it! Hope to see you there! 3) Our choral groups will be singing the National Anthem at home football games in the next few weeks. Here is the National Anthem schedule below: Fri. Sept. 16 All Men 6:00 Warm-ups/Run-thru 7pm Sing Anthem Fri. Sept. 30 Concert Choir 6:00 Warm-ups/Run-thru 7:00 Sing Anthem Fri. Please return those forms to me ASAP to secure a spot for your child. 5) Students in Concert Choir, Women s Chorale, Varsity Madrigals and Essence will have the opportunity to travel to TORONTO from April 19-23, 2017 on our Spring Choir Tour. Choir Tour is one of the best highlights in your student s high school experience and our goal is to have everyone in those groups travel with us! There will be a MANDATORY TOUR MEETING right before the CHOIR BOOSTER Meeting Tues. September 20th at 6:30pm in the Choir Room for parents and students of these groups who did not attend the meeting in August. The meeting will include the itinerary, cost, commitment letter, medical forms, & chaperone information. For your student to be able to travel, one parent and their student must attend. A $100 deposit for the trip would be due that evening as well (or students can take that amount out of their student account if they prefer). Anyone wanting to chaperone the trip should fill out the attached survey and return by the Sept. 20 th Booster meeting. Thank you for making arrangements to be there! We are so excited to have this opportunity to travel!

3 6) Homecoming Parade is coming Friday Sept. 30 th at 4pm and students are invited to ride on our Choir wagon and are to dress up as their favorite movie star. Should be fun! 7) The annual Fall Choral Concert is Thurs. Oct. 6th at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center at the high school. Our curricular choirs, Concert Choir, Women s Chorale, Treble Choir and Mixed Choir have begun their work on new music, as well as our after school choirs, JV Madrigals and Varsity Madrigals who are preparing for this upcoming concert. Our three feeder junior highs will join us as we perform together for the sixteenth straight year and combine together in song at the end of the concert on our Grand Finale. Choir families get to help be a part of the evening by contributing to our Fall Concert Bake sale by bringing one of your favorite treats to sell at the end of the concert (see bake sales below). It will also be our Women s Chorale member s responsibility to help clean up the Performing Arts Center after the concert. Hope to see you at our first concert of the year! 8) A mini-madrigal parent meeting will be held on Tues. Sept. 20 th after the Choir Booster Meeting (7pm) at 8pm in the Career Center. We will discuss cost, menu, costumes, pictures, our anniversary plans for our alumni, and filling our reservation chair position. It should last about 15 minutes. See you then! 9) The MCHS Talent Show is back!! It s being held on Thurs. Sept. 29th at 6:30pm in the Performing Arts Center at Central Campus. Cost is $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students to attend. For those wanting to perform, auditions will be held on Mon. Sept. 19 and Thurs. Sept. 22nd from 3:05pm until 6:00pm in the Choir Room at Central Campus. Sign-ups to audition are at the Choir Room (Central) and Main Office (South) and should be signed up by Fri. Sept. 16th. Students auditioning need to pick-up an application from the South Main Office or in the Choir Room and applications are due back to one of those places with parent and student signatures by Fri. Sept. 16th. Thanks! 10) IMEA Sr. Chorus Auditions-Tues. Oct. 11 th - Auditions will be held at Carl Sandburg H.S. this year. Cost is $8 to audition and if needed, students can take money out of their account. IMEA music for Sr. Chorus is available for Soph, Jr. and Sr. choir students and there are practice links on a website to practice along with. Students will also have scheduled practice times during the day during choir, their lunch hour or after school to ready students for the audition. Don t miss out on this great opportunity to sing with the best in state! 11) On Monday, September 12, many of our Choir students will be involved in the Mad Rush Hour fundraiser. Students participating will be meeting at the Choir Room right after school from 3:15-4:15 and are asked to bring in their list of about 30 names of people to contact. We will be selling sports tumblers, magazine gift cards, and the ultimate gift card to buy items online. 11 Basket Raffles for Choir Craft Show Hello to all our choir families! Every year we have a craft show in the fall as a fundraising event for the choir. This year s choir craft show will be on Saturday, November 5 th at South Campus from 9am-3pm. As part of the craft show we have wonderful baskets that we raffle off at the end of the day. We have a reputation for having fabulous baskets that people look forward to and they help to make the craft show our biggest fundraiser of the year! We need the help of every choir family to make our basket raffle a huge success! We are asking that every choir student put together a theme for a basket valued at $30. How will this work? Pick a theme for your basket and sign-up. Your student will earn $30 into their student account for turning in a theme for a basket. You can do more than one basket per student if you want but the $30 will only be credited one time. You can choose to give a $30 cash donation instead of doing a theme donation. Funds will be used to help with baskets. See the list of ideas below or you may use your own original idea. Be creative while you shop (hopefully taking advantage of sales) for items that fit your theme. You need to sign up prior to putting your theme together so that we can avoid too many duplicates. Notify Lana Pursell of your theme choice and student name. She will reply back to verify if your choice is available. Wait for your reply back before you shop. To sign up o Lana at lanapursell@sbcglobal.net OR o Text Lana at Place the items in a bag that is clearly labeled with your student s name and theme. Do not wrap your items into a basket. We may have other items to add or more than one family contributing to the same themed basket. Turn your bag in to Lana at choir blast off on September 9t h, the booster meeting on Sept. 20 th, OR drop it off at Vanessa Holloway s house Cobblestone Lane, Channahon. Call to make drop off arrangements). If you choose to make a cash donation it can be given to Lana or

12 Vanessa or placed in the black box in the choir room (Make checks out to choir boosters and be sure to label check or envelope with cash with student name and for basket raffles) Some Basket Theme Ideas -dog basket, cat basket, wine theme, movie night, game night either for older or younger kids, margarita basket, romance theme, chocolate theme, baking theme, ice cream theme, BBQ time basket, tailgating or other sports team theme, MCHS spirit basket, bath and body basket, popcorn theme, Italian or Mexican food theme, scrapbooking or card making basket, jewelry making or jewelry basket, cake pop basket, car care theme, make-up basket, mani/pedi or spa basket theme, golf theme, gender neutral baby basket, Barbie basket, Hot Wheels basket, Disney theme, Crayola theme, or kids craft theme basket, breakfast themed basket, coffee or tea theme, puzzle basket, tools or garage theme, music theme, chili, soup, crockpot theme, gardening theme, bird feeder basket, gift wrapping basket (various wrapping paper, tissue paper, bags, cards), yoga/exercise basket, Christmas theme basket, adult or little girl hair care, tub time fun, knitting theme, appetizer theme, cookbook theme, little girl dress up theme, Christmas theme. All basket items are due no later than October 1st. This deadline is firm in order to have time to prepare the baskets! How else can you help? 1. We need volunteers to help make up baskets. If you are interested let Lana or Vanessa know (see contact information above). They will you a list of dates and times that baskets will be put together. Then you sign up to help whenever you would like during those times. You will earn $5 into your student account for each basket you put together. 2. We are looking for additional donations of items needed to help make up baskets. We need lots of large baskets, lots and lots of ribbon (curling ribbon, all widths of decorative ribbon, wired or not, solids and prints), silk greenery and flowers, and basket shred. Perhaps you have some new and unused items that maybe don t fit your theme but you would like to donate anyway? They might fit in with a different theme. Things like candles, bath and body products, small boxes of sealed candy always work well as filler for baskets. These items can be given to Lana or Vanessa at any time and will be much appreciated. 3. Solicitation help- We need people to solicit area businesses for donations.

13 You can earn money into your student account by helping with solicitation. Vanessa Holloway is in charge of solicitation. Please contact her at or at if you can help. She can give you further information. You will be able to pick which businesses and how many you are willing to contact. If you own your own business and would like to make a business donation, contact Vanessa. Please do not contact businesses without talking to Vanessa first. We want to make sure we are not soliciting a business more than once and that you have our solicitation letter to give the business. This is not a hard job and is a very important one! If everyone could just ask a business or two that you would normally be going to anyway our solicitation efforts would easily be a success. We realize that everyone is very busy, but if all families help it will go a long way in making our basket raffle a success. If for some reason you can t help out with a basket let us know. We understand that some families are experiencing financial hardships. There are definitely plenty of volunteering opportunities available instead.

17 CHOIR BOOSTER BOARD MEMBERS Nadine Baxter- President Brenda Cichon- Vice-President Molly Babyak-Treasurer Johana Richart, Secretary Meeting 3rd Tuesday of the month 7 p.m. Career MCHS Central MCHS Choir Boosters Meeting Minutes August 16, 2016 Nadine Baxter, Booster President, called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm. She welcomed attendees to this first Booster meeting of the school year. Secretary s Report: Attendees were asked to review the meeting minutes from the May 17, 2016 meeting. Only change is Friday for Blast-off, rather than Saturday as listed under New Business. Motion to accept was made by JoAnn Maruszak and seconded by Vanessa Holloway. Treasurer s Report: Attendees were then directed to review the Treasurer s report dated August 16. Motion to approve was made by Lisa McGowan. Bret Reedy seconded. Motion carried. Director s Report: Mr. Benware welcomed all to our first booster meeting of the year, and Introduced the Board. (Nadine Baxter, President; Brenda Cichon, Vice-President; Molly Babyak, Treasurer; Johana Richart, Secretary.) Representative(s) from the Concert Choir officers will attend each booster meeting. This meeting was attended by Concert Choir President Ben Dow and Treasurer Corbyn Holman. First choir officer meeting took place yesterday. Ben reported that plans are underway for the upcoming Blast-Off. The students will sing and have a pot-luck. The theme of the evening is the 80s! This is a fun event for younger students to get to know the older students. All will perform for parents, dress up in fun outfits, and play theme-related games. Parents are invited to attend, and to dress up and get to know each other. Choir fittings will start Friday during class and anyone wishing to help with this task should talk with Brenda Cichon after the meeting. Auditions for the a capella guys and girls groups will take place soon. Friday next week is also Senior Night at the first home football game. This includes choir, band, and sports groups. Pictures start around 4:30-5. Varsity Madrigals sing at this game. Choir students are singing for Open house Thursday, August 25, at South Campus. Parents are still encouraged to meet their student s teachers at Central Campus. Expect a handbook to be sent home with your student. This outlines grading scale, expectations, calendar of events, group and event descriptions, and a signature page which needs to be returned to RB by the end of August.

18 Mr. Benware introduced Ms. Hillary Holden, new activity director for MCHS this year. Old Business: The Booster Board is proposing something new for this school year: Choir parent representatives. We need 1-2 parents to volunteer for each of the four choirs: Concert, Chorale, Mixed and Treble. Each choir is in charge of one concert during the school year to provide volunteers for various tasks: Water sales, doors, backstage supervision, and picking up garbage from the auditorium. The choir parent reps for that concert doesn t do all of the work; rather, they recruit other parents from their student s choir to help during the concert. In other words, they have fun, while supporting their student s interests! Concert Choir will be in charge of Fall Concert. It s the largest concert because the junior high choirs come to perform, as well. Anyone interested in being a Choir Parent Representative should speak with a Board member right away! Our first all-choir event of each year is Choir Blast-off! This is a great social event, which will be held Friday, September 9, 2016, 6-9 pm at the Central Campus Cafetorium. The theme this year is the 80 s! Drinks are provided and everyone enjoys a pot-luck dinner as outlined below: Seniors-Dessert Juniors-Salad Sophomores-Side dish Freshmen-Main dish Choir Car Wash: This year s fall car wash will be Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 9a-3p at ACE Hardware on Ridge. There will also be a bake sale. Please sign up! Talent Show: Auditions for Talent Show will be held 9/19-22 with results posted on Friday. This is a great event during Homecoming Week, and set for Thursday, 9/29 at 6:30 in the PAC. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. There will be a bake sale and water sale. There is a mandatory dress rehearsal on Monday, 9/26. Homecoming parade is held at 4 pm, and students are done around 5. Theme is Hollywood. Homecoming Game: Friday,9/30, is the homecoming football game. Because it s a tour year, Choir Boosters and students have the opportunity work at the game by selling programs, split the pot tickets, and stadium cleanup to earn money in their student accounts. Volunteers are needed for everything! Fall Concert: with the Junior Highs is held Thursday, October 6 in the PAC from 7-8:30. This is a huge opportunity to sell a lot for the bake sale! Concert Choir will be assigned to this event to help with ushering, programs, back stage, etc. 17th Annual Craft Fair: Choir Booster s LARGEST FUNDRAISER: Saturday, November 5 at South Campus. Plan now to be involved!

19 Raffle Baskets: Vanessa Holloway is in charge of the solicitation of donations for the raffle baskets, and Vanessa and Lana Pursell are in charge of the raffle baskets themselves. Vanessa outlined what s involved with this effort. This includes solicitation of local businesses for donations. If you re interested in soliciting local businesses, speak with Vanessa first so you can receive the solicitation letter, and so that we avoid having several different people approaching the same business. We have a donation letter available for donors. There are at least 50 themed baskets each year. These are truly works of art. Boosters asks that every choir family donate items for a themed basket which totals at least $30. Or, families can donate the $30 cash or check. The beautiful thing is that $30 goes directly into the student s account! Baskets items are due October 1, allowing ample time for the assembly team to put them together. Lana Pursell distributed paperwork for the basket raffle. There is a correction to the sheet that was distributed. Lana s number is Molly Babyak and Brenda Cichon are co-chairing the Craft Fair. Molly invited attendees to direct potential vendors to MCHS.ChoirFair@comcast.net and she ll send vendor information. Lauri Rhoades is in charge of volunteer coordinating. She encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for signup opportunities at Blast-off. NEW BUSINESS: Director s Fund: Nadine Baxter reported that an annual tradition of the Booster organization is to provide Mr. Benware funds to help with discretionary spending throughout the year which would include expenses like pizza parties, contest prizes, and other student-related items. Nadine asked for a motion to approve $700 for the Director s Account for the school year. Motion to approve was made by Lana Pursell and Jane Worden. There was no opposition. Motion carries. Water/Soda Donations: This year s requested donations for soda and water are as follows: Concert choir: One case of pop (a case of a minimum of 24, 8-ounce cans) All other choirs (Mixed, Women s and Treble: a case of a minimum of 24, 16.9-ounce bottles) Due Date: Blast-off on Friday, September 9 or Fall Concert at the latest. Please do not bring them directly to the choir room. Nadine read a thank you note from Hannah Babyak. She attended a musical theater camp at North Central College during the summer, and the Boosters supported her in this effort. Mr. Benware shared that being part of the choral program develops in the students a love of singing. Please, parents, consider what you can do to help Lauri Rhoades motioned to adjourn the meeting at 8:03, and Ruth Garcia seconded the motion. No other items were discussed, so the motion carried. Next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 20 at 7 pm. in the Career Center Respectfully submitted, Johana Richart, Secretary
