1 BF-DC Government Club Hosted Annual Veterans Day Program Burns Flat-Dill City Government Club hosted its annual Veterans Day Program on Tuesday, November 11, Forty veterans and their spouses attended the program. The Burns Flat-Dill City Band performed the Star Spangled Banner as the FFA chapter presented the flag presentation. Cheyenne Leftwich, Secretary, presented the poem, Thank a Veteran: A Veterans Day Poem. Kensey Garrison, Vice-President, introduced guest speaker Mahlon L. Smith. Mr. Smith served in the Air Force, He is the president of the Charles B. Hall Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., in Oklahoma City. The Burns Flat-Dill City Vocal presented two songs, Til the Last Shot s Fired and Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagle Fly. A slide presentation of the veterans and retiring of the colors followed the songs. The Government Club served lunch to the veterans and their spouses at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall following the program. 2 Page 2 Will Roger Elementary Winter Reading Challenge-December 18th Every child that attains their reading and behavior goal will be allowed to attend our 2nd 9 weeks reading incentive. This 9 weeks reading incentive is the opportunity to attend the Washita Movie Theatre in Cordell to see a new release of either BIG HERO 6 or the Penguins of Madagascar, they will also get a popcorn and pop. The total cost per child is $9.00. The theatre is giving us a discount, which we greatly appreciate. We need each child that gets to attend bring $3.75,and we will cover the rest. We truly wish that we could cover the entire cost of the trip but at least we are able defray some of the cost. Thank You, L. The senior group made up of Jaron Mason, Jordan Mason, Kaylyn Durling, and Chloe Moore one first place for senior groups. Jordan Mason was first place with her singing solo Do You Want to Build a Snowman. Congratulations 4-H students. Every student in 4th grade presented a project at the Science Fair. Nevaeh HahnBecker placed first with edible playdoh, Richard Lugo placed second with explosive household chemicals, and Chloe Gearhart placed 3rd with Artbots. The students now know dependent and independent variables. The 4th graders have just finished studying the great explorers, John Cabot and Ponce de Leon. John Cabot discovered the rich Cod fishing grounds off Newfoundland and Ponce de Leon discovered the The 2nd graders at Will Rogers Elementary were visited by the Burns Flat fire department, police department, and ambulance service to enrich their story unit: A Trip to the Fire Station. The emergency personal were kind enough to let the children explore their vehicles and explain to the students about what they do on the job and why their job is important to the community. Not cherry or apple, but ask a fourth grader what PIE is in their Reading class BF-DC Will Rogers Pre-K Star Students for October Makynzie Beam and Kiah Newberry 3rd Graders Attend Philharmonic Orchestra Concert Nearly seventy thirdgraders Will Rogers Elementary attended a free youth concert presented by the OKC Philharmonic Orchestra. Will Rogers Elementary students have been studying the orchestra and instrument families for the past month. Third-grade, specifically, has been learning about the composers featured in the concert in preparation for the youth concert. The concert focused on Benjamin Britten's Introduction and Finale from Young People's Guide to the Orchestra. The maestro, Matthew Troy, directed the concert inviting each musician to demonstrate his/her instrument for the students to become familiar with the specific sounds of the instruments. The students listened to music by John Williams, Star Wars: "Main Title" and "Nimbus 2000" from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Other pieces were by American composer Richard Hayman's piece "Pops" Hoedown featured various folk tunes which used many unique percussion instruments. Christopher Rouse's study of Haitian music is the inspiration for his percussion piece, "Ogoun Badagris." French composer Paul Dukas' "Fanfare" from La Peri featured the brass family. Hans Christian Lumbye's Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop was written in honor of the first Danish railway line. Mrs. Fite, the music teacher, would like to say thank you to Ms. Brown, the bus driver, and third grade teachers, Mrs. D. Simmons, Mrs. Young, and Mrs. Shaw for supporting the students in their musical paths. Will Rogers Student Present Turkey Tracks The Will Rogers Kindergarten and T-1 presented their "Turkey Tracks" Program for the Cordell Christian Home on Wednesday morning, November 19. On Monday, November 24, they will present for the students and on Tuesday, November 25, they will present to their parents in the Will Rogers Elementary gym. Mrs. Leann Black assists Mrs. Fite by playing the piano. Also Mrs. Cansler, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Raleigh, and Mrs. Donaldson assist Mrs. Fite with the program. The students enjoy performing for parents, fami- lies, and friends! The Pre-Kindergarten presented their Thanksgiving program on Friday morning, November 21 at the Will Rogers Elementary gymnasium. The Pre-K teachers are Mrs. Balzer and Mrs. Britton and their aides are Ms. Chilton and Mrs. Shropshire. Mrs. Fite directed the students. All Parents, grand-parents, and friends were invited to come and enjoy their songs!

4 High School Academic Team News The high school Academic Team placed 4th at the Regional Tournament, which was held in Burns Flat on Saturday November 15th. They lost a close match against the regional champs, Carnegie, in overtime. By placing 4th, Burns Flat will be competing at the Area tournament in Burns Flat on January 17th. The top 2 teams from that tournament will go to state. Ryne Garrison continues to be the top scorer as a freshman and his sister, Kensey Garrison is the team's 2nd leading scorer. Kelsey Briggs, Cable Jacobson,, Katelynn Neeley, Jaron Mason, and Zyane Gonzales are the other members of the team who played at Regionals. Junior Class News FCCLA News The Junior class collected donated canned food and other non-perishable items for the food drive November 8th 10th. The juniors did a great job but came in 3rd place. The juniors will be getting together sometime soon to discuss theme ideas for prom and to start planning prom. We have a great team this year and I would like to say a BIG thank you to all the people who helped to judge or moderate at the regional tournament! History Day Club will Visit Clinton Library The Burns Flat-Dill City History Day Club will visit the Clinton Library on Tuesday, November 25th, to complete more extensive research on their history projects. Students participating are: Senior Division Jordan Hughes, Cheyenne Leftwich, Tracie Diggs, Seth Nason, Isaac Clark,, Kensey Garrison, Cable Jacobsen, Jaron Mason and Jake Mooney. Junior Division: Lorsa Hughes and Jordan Mason. Upon completion of their research, the students along with their sponsors, Mrs. Lyles and Mrs. Ledbetter, will treat themselves to lunch before returning to school. Maranda Rupp 7th Grade News 6th Grade News Jordan Mason a 7th grader at BF-DC schools said that the 7th grade students were happy that basketball season started and that they were enjoying the games. The 7th graders are currently working on book reports in English, ratios in math, and the cell theory in science. In geography they are studying Africa. Mia Tibbits said that the 6th graders are working on plurals in English, dividing and multiplying decimals in math, and studying parts of plants in science including the roots, stems, and leaves. In social studies they are learning migration and populations and in reading they have started reading The Devils Arithmetic written by Jane Yolen. It is a great book stressing the importance of learning about the past. 8th Grade News The 8th grade students are learning about context clues in English. They are studying exponents in math. In U.S. History they are learning about the government of the United States and in science they are learning about rocks including how they were formed and the different types of rocks. All of the 8th graders interviewed were very excited about basketball starting. Page 4 Cross Country News On October 18, 2014 the Burns Flat Dill City high school girls cross country team travelled to VelmaAlma to participate in class 2A girls regionals. Darian Hargis placed 17th running a 14:32 and missing state by 2 places, Jordan Weese placed 27th with a 15:14, Shaydie Villegas 62nd with a 16:48, Katie Birdwell 67th with a 17:04, and Kaitlyn Utt 76th with a 17:35. The girls placed 8th as a team. Darian Hargis November 8th through November 10th, the Student Council Officers attended the State StuCO convention in Del City. They participated in many activities and social experiences with likeminded students from Oklahoma and listened to several speakers talking about how to become a great leader and a catalyst in their community. The students ended the convention with a dance, themed A Night at the Grammys. The StuCO members had an exciting experience and learned a lot of great and useful information from their trip. The Student Council organized a food drive for the local food pantry in Burns Flat and the students at BFDC schools brought in an exceeding amount of food. For the Junior High division, here are the results: 6th Grade: 1.13 lbs. 7th Grade: 94 lbs. 8th Grade: 0 lbs. For the High School division, the results are: Freshman: 42.4 lbs. Sophomores: 3 lbs. Juniors: 55 lbs. Seniors: lbs. The 7th grade won the Junior High Division of the food drive and the 12th grade won the High School Division of the contest. He has to deal with many difficult situations that normal people wouldn t have to face. He also has to deal with controlling his powers as a half vampire. I thought that this was a really fun manga to read plus the art style is amazingly beautiful. I really loved this book for the amazing adventure it had. Branden Friedel Staff reporter Book Review Two Little Girls in Blue is about twins who get kidnapped on their third birthday. The kidnappers asked for eight million dollars before the girls are returned safely. The company the dad works for agrees to pay the eight million dollars for the girls. The old mayor makes the decision to be the one who will drop off the money. There was a complication with the drop off. I thought the book was great! If you are wanting a suspenseful book that makes you want to read until the end then this is your book. I have had social anxiety for a while now and I can t seem to get over it. Thoughts? 6 Page 6 Commitment of Seven Seniors Seven young men stood on the battlefield as the pain of defeat started to go through their cold tired bodies just like it had so many times before, yet this time it was different; this was the last time that these seven seniors would stand together in battle on the football field. Isaac Clark, Aaron Clark, Aaron Knight, Tony Dorman, Tyler Taylor, Jose Chavarria and Tanner Renken are seven seniors that felt the tears of joy, tears of sadness, and the tears of empathy as the season came to an end versus Sayre in defeat. The seniors understood the realization that the Burns Flat-Dill City football team had not won a game in over 3 years. They understood that Aaron Knight, one of the best linebackers in the state was unable to play the past two months due to a football injury. The seniors understood that they were leaving the game of football in high school with their heads down as they pass the torch down to players like Cameron Carter, Jacob Goeringer, Brenden Estep, and many more Sophomores and Freshmen. The seniors understood that all the summer camps, summer workouts, and long practices were over and the cold air in the night at the end of the game on November 7th in Sayre Oklahoma only passed through them like a warm summer wind. The pain wasn t physical no more. Nonetheless, the football team along with the seven seniors stood together at the end of the game and listened to their coach as he spoke about commitment, togetherness, and faith. The seven stood proud as their coach honored them concerning the commitment that was made by them when others quit or even refused to try. The seven seniors felt less pain as coach called them winners and one day when they have families, they will then understand why they were winners. High school football is not about the wins and losses; the game sends men into life to prepare for the battle known as life. The struggles it takes to learn to be a good father, husband and worker are taught in football. As each senior embraced friends, girlfriends, family and one another the pain of losing started to drift away and they looked into the eyes of their teammates and hoped that they would understand the level of commitment it takes to be a winner. The seven seniors knew as they talked to each other that the wins would come for the mighty BF-DC Eagles if more young men would just accept the fact that life is a battle and for many young men those lessons are taught in the weight room, at long practices, at film study, and most of all those lessons are taught on the gridiron.
